2009 Audi A3 problems
The Audi A3 is a subcompact executive/small family car (C-segment) manufactured and marketed by the German automaker Audi AG since September 1996, currently in its fourth generation.
The first two generations of the Audi A3 were based on the Volkswagen Group A platform, while the third and fourth generations use the Volkswagen Group MQB platform.
First generation (Typ 8L; 1996)
The original A3 (or Type 8L) was announced back in June 1995, but introduced first in the European market for more than year in September 1996, marking Audi's return to the production of smaller cars following the demise of the Audi 50 in 1978. This was the first Volkswagen Group model to use the "PQ34" or "A4" platform, bearing a close resemblance to the contemporary Volkswagen Golf Mk4, which arrived a year later. Within three years, this platform was used for total of seven cars.
The A3 was initially available only with a three-door hatchback body, to present a more sporty image than the Golf, in both front and four-wheel drive. The inline four-cylinder engines were transversely mounted. The Audi A3 was the eighth model in the Audi lineup to use five valves per cylinder. The dashboard was also used by the first generation SEAT León and second generation SEAT Toledo.
The United Kingdom market first received the Audi A3 in November 1996.
In 1999 Audi expanded the range with the introduction of more powerful versions: a 1.8 turbo rated 180 PS (132 kW; 178 hp), and a 1.9 TDI diesel engine with unit injector "Pumpe Düse" (PD) technology and variable geometry turbocharger. The four-wheel-drive A3 1.8T quattro used either the 150 PS (110 kW; 148 hp) or 180 PS (132 kW; 178 hp) engine, and the same Haldex Traction-based four-wheel-drive system as the Audi S3 and the Audi TT. Also in 1999, Audi also introduced a five-door body.
In late 2000 the A3 range was revised with new headlights and rear lamps, other minor cosmetic changes, an improved interior, and the introduction of a six-speed manual gearbox, on the 180 PS (132 kW; 178 hp) 1.8 Turbo and the new 130 PS (96 kW; 128 hp) 1.9 TDI.
Audi's electronic stability control, traction-control, and brake force distribution computer became standard equipment in some countries.
Although the first-generation Audi A3 was replaced in Europe in 2003, the first generation model continued to be sold in some markets. Production of the first generation model stopped in Brazil in 2006.

Common 2009 Audi A3 problems
Based on the information gathered from various sources regarding common problems with the 2009 Audi A3, here is a detailed list of issues reported by owners:
- Brake Vacuum Pump: Owners have experienced problems with the brake vacuum pump, particularly in Audi A3s built between 1996 and 1999. Cracks on the vacuum pipe near the servo can lead to issues with the brake pedal, requiring excessive force to slow down the car.
- Fuel Leak Problems: Diesel models of the Audi A3, especially the 2.0-liter model built between 2003 and 2012, have been known to have faulty fuel pipes causing leaks. This issue primarily affects cars from a 3-year window between 2008 and 2011.
- Clutch Problems: The direct-shift transmission on Audi A3 models built between 2008 and 2009 has a recognized fault with the clutch temperature gauge. This fault can engage the clutch when the car heats up, resulting in power loss while driving.
- Airbag Issues: Audi A3s equipped with a 3 spoke sports steering wheel may face problems with the airbag deployment. Models featuring this part have a known fault with airbag deployment, requiring inspection by an Audi dealer.
- Flywheel Concerns: A serious issue reported in Audi A3s produced between 2003 and 2005 involves the flywheel, which connects the clutch to the engine. There have been instances where the flywheel can become damaged or fail completely, potentially leading to engine fires.
- Curtain Airbag Problem: Some Audi A3s built between 2003 and 2012, especially the Sportback models from 2005, have experienced issues with the curtain airbag. This problem was due to a faulty seal allowing gas to escape, preventing proper inflation of the airbag.
- Timing Belt and Water Pump: Regular replacement of the timing belt every 60,000 miles is crucial to prevent engine issues. It is also recommended to replace the water pump during this maintenance to avoid potential complications.
- Rear Brake Pipes: Older Audi A3s from around 1996-2003 may have corroded rear brake pipes, leading to fluid leaks that can affect the car's braking performance.
These reported problems highlight the importance of thorough inspection and maintenance when owning a 2009 Audi A3 to ensure optimal performance and safety.

Your Audi A3 6MT sounds like an absolute blast to drive! It's great to hear that it has all the features you could ever want, is comfortable, fun, and sexy. Plus, the great mileage is definitely a bonus. If you're in the market for a car and don't want to spend $38K on a BMW 3 series just to get the options you want, but also don't want to settle for a VW, then the Audi A3 6MT is definitely worth considering. It's clear that Audi really knows what they're doing!

Congratulations on nearing your one year of ownership! It sounds like you've had a great experience with your car, especially during the winter months in Boston. It's always reassuring to have good traction control and stability. It's great to hear that you haven't had any mechanical problems. I understand that it can be frustrating when certain items don't fit in the car, like your golf bag, but it sounds like you're considering an upgrade to an A4 Wagon. Maybe that will be a better fit for your needs. Thank you for sharing your experience and helpful tip about the windshield wipers!

I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying your new car! It sounds like you were worried about sacrificing space and luxury for better fuel efficiency and a more compact size, but it seems like those concerns were unfounded. The interior is roomy and well-detailed, although you could do without the carbon fiber trim. It's great that the car is easier to park in the city, gets better mileage, and is faster than your previous A4 Avant. Overall, it seems like a great option if you don't need the Quattro. Thanks for sharing your experience!

As a proud owner of multiple Audi vehicles, I can confidently say that I am a big fan of the brand. When it came time to purchase a new car, I naturally headed to my local Audi dealer and opted for the base model A3 with DSG. I am extremely satisfied with my purchase and was able to save a significant amount of money by forgoing costly add-ons. The standard equipment, including dual A/C, a great stereo, excellent transmission, and a well-designed interior and exterior, exceeded my expectations. It's worth noting that if you're considering an Audi, be mindful of the pricey options, as they can quickly add up and push the total cost over $30k. Lastly, I'm thrilled with the car's impressive gas mileage.

Just purchased my A3, and after driving about town a bit now, I can say with certainty that this is a unique ride. If you are even thinking about a BMW, or one of the many alternatives, do not let the A3 slip your list, this car is great! It's like a play toy that has all the creature comforts you could want.

I have been a loyal Audi driver for many years, having owned several models including the 5000, 200, A4, A6, 100, and now the A3. While I have had some issues with my A3, such as broken wires in the door looms and a faulty ignition switch, I still appreciate its fuel economy and quick acceleration. However, I do believe that the quality of Audi cars has decreased over time, and I miss the reliability of my 1999 Audi A4. Additionally, I find the sound quality of the stereo to be lacking. If you are considering purchasing a used Audi A3, I would recommend looking for one with low mileage. Overall, I still enjoy driving my Audi and appreciate the brand's history of quality craftsmanship.

My car seems to be using an excessive amount of oil, which makes me hesitant to drive it for long distances. Despite checking the oil and finding it to be remarkably dirty, it was full. However, after driving around 100 miles, the oil level dropped significantly without any warning. I have taken it back to my Audi dealership three times and will be returning for a fourth attempt. I really enjoy this car and would prefer not to sell it due to poor treatment from the dealership. I believe that once we purchase an Audi, we become part of the family and deserve exceptional service. As Audi drivers, we expect high performance, quality, and top-notch treatment. Thank you!

We needed a hatchback for our big dog and we accomplished that goal. However, the short gear ratios (2,500 rpm at 60mph) negatively affect the gas mileage and make it less enjoyable to drive on the highway or interstate. It seems odd to put the GTI gearbox (built for 16 year olds) in an Audi, as they don't seem to have the same audience. The car does have a slope sensor, but the transmission doesn't shift up when going uphill, causing the car to run at 3,000 rpm and requiring manual shifting to save gas. While the DSG transmission is nice, it can be hypersensitive and make for a roller coaster ride when the car is cold. The A/C can also be difficult to operate. Unfortunately, there is no homelink or self-contained sun visor upgrade available.
