The Audi A3 is a subcompact executive/small family car (C-segment) manufactured and marketed by the German automaker Audi AG since September 1996, currently in its fourth generation.
The first two generations of the Audi A3 were based on the Volkswagen Group A platform, while the third and fourth generations use the Volkswagen Group MQB platform.
First generation (Typ 8L; 1996)
The original A3 (or Type 8L) was announced back in June 1995, but introduced first in the European market for more than year in September 1996, marking Audi's return to the production of smaller cars following the demise of the Audi 50 in 1978. This was the first Volkswagen Group model to use the "PQ34" or "A4" platform, bearing a close resemblance to the contemporary Volkswagen Golf Mk4, which arrived a year later. Within three years, this platform was used for total of seven cars.
The A3 was initially available only with a three-door hatchback body, to present a more sporty image than the Golf, in both front and four-wheel drive. The inline four-cylinder engines were transversely mounted. The Audi A3 was the eighth model in the Audi lineup to use five valves per cylinder. The dashboard was also used by the first generation SEAT León and second generation SEAT Toledo.
The United Kingdom market first received the Audi A3 in November 1996.
In 1999 Audi expanded the range with the introduction of more powerful versions: a 1.8 turbo rated 180 PS (132 kW; 178 hp), and a 1.9 TDI diesel engine with unit injector "Pumpe Düse" (PD) technology and variable geometry turbocharger. The four-wheel-drive A3 1.8T quattro used either the 150 PS (110 kW; 148 hp) or 180 PS (132 kW; 178 hp) engine, and the same Haldex Traction-based four-wheel-drive system as the Audi S3 and the Audi TT. Also in 1999, Audi also introduced a five-door body.
In late 2000 the A3 range was revised with new headlights and rear lamps, other minor cosmetic changes, an improved interior, and the introduction of a six-speed manual gearbox, on the 180 PS (132 kW; 178 hp) 1.8 Turbo and the new 130 PS (96 kW; 128 hp) 1.9 TDI.
Audi's electronic stability control, traction-control, and brake force distribution computer became standard equipment in some countries.
Although the first-generation Audi A3 was replaced in Europe in 2003, the first generation model continued to be sold in some markets. Production of the first generation model stopped in Brazil in 2006.

THEY HAVEN'T CALLED ME BACK THEY DON'T TAKE THIS SERIOUSLY, QUITE POSSIBLY BECAUSE MY CAR IS 10 YEARS OLD. NONETHELESS, IT IS MY LIFE AND MY PASSENGERS' LIVES THAT ARE PUT AT RISK BY THIS APPROACH.

- Summary: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain 2006-2013 Audi A3, 2007-2009 A4 Cabriolet and S4 Cabriolet, 2008 RS4 Cabriolet, 2009-2012 Q5, and 2010-2012 Audi A5 Cabriolet and S5 Cabriolet vehicles. Upon deployment of the driver's frontal air bag, excessive internal pressure may cause the inflator to explode.
- Consequence: In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the driver's frontal air bag, the inflator could explode with metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants potentially resulting in serious injury or death.
- Remedy: Audi will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver's frontal air bag inflator with an alternative inflator, free of charge. The recall began February 23, 2018. Owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-253-2834. Volkswagen's number for this recall is 69R6. Note: This recall partially supersedes recall 16V-078.

The A3 is a great car that is both stylish and fuel efficient. With a chip and performance downpipe, I was able to increase the horsepower and torque to 230hp and 263tq at the wheels. I have the S-Line w/ Technology package 2.0T FSI and there are a few known issues that I have experienced: 1. Divertor valve tearing (which can be easily fixed with a new piston-type revision valve) 2. Burning oil (varies from car to car but personally I only add 1qt per 5000 mi) 3. Clogging intake valves due to the nature of direct injection (fixed by running a catch can set-up) 4. Cam follower wear on high pressure fuel pump (this is a wear item that should be changed out every 30k and checked every oil change, and it's only a $50 part but VW/Audi won't tell you that).

This fall will be two years in my A3 and this car is the best small car I have ever owned. Great all season driver!!

This car has been incredibly reliable. Unlike other reviews, I have not experienced any squeaks or rattles. The brakes are confident and the steering is wonderful. The acceleration is quick without being too fast. What the reviews fail to mention is that this car is the ultimate city car - compact, practical, quick, and stylish. It handles twisty back roads with ease, but its only weakness is touring on US freeways. For that, you need something heavier with a longer wheelbase. However, since 90% of my driving is in the city, I couldn't be happier with my choice. Just be aware of the clutch take-up on the DSG transmission, as it is set aggressively.

Hey there! I noticed that you have a pretty long commute of 152 miles a day. That can be tough, but I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying the drive overall! I can imagine that some of the roadways might be a bit noisy, but it sounds like your car is handling it like a champ. I was really impressed to hear that it stayed glued to the road even in 40 mph winds at 75 mph! And it's great to know that the front wheel drive handles well in the snow too.

The car is a joy to drive, with a light, powerful, and precise feel. It's well-balanced and stops well, making it perfect for any driving situation. The Bluetooth, see-around-corners lights, and seat heater all work seamlessly, making for a comfortable and enjoyable ride. The driver's seat is especially comfortable, with the premium version featuring a great electric seat. The passenger seat is manually adjustable, which can be a bit cumbersome, but it gets the job done. The air conditioner works well, although it can be a bit too cold if restarted when warm. The Bose stereo is fantastic, although the CD changer is difficult to reach and there is no iPod input. However, an FM transmitter can be used as a workaround, although it may not be ideal in areas with a lot of FM stations.

This is a great, versatile car that offers a fun and economical driving experience while also being able to haul a large amount of equipment, especially with the rear seats folded down. I don't think any other car on the market can match its features. I purchased the S-line with just about every option available and I can't imagine living without rain sensing wipers now. However, I have had three major issues with the vehicle within the first year of ownership, resulting in a total down time of well over a month. While I have had some reliability issues, I still believe this car is a great choice for those looking for a fun and versatile vehicle.

I recently purchased an A3 after owning an A4 and unfortunately, I have been disappointed with its performance. The mileage is worse than our truck and it struggles to maintain speed on the highway, even in 1st gear. I have reached out to Audi for assistance, but they have not been helpful and have instead shifted the blame to others. As someone with extensive auto experience and an engineering background, I find the design to be one of the worst I have seen in my 30 years of buying cars. It is lighter than the A4, yet has the same power (V6) and gets about 10MPG less than the A4, which is surprising. Due to the lack of support from Audi USA, we have decided not to purchase from them again. Perhaps a different gear ratio in the differentials could have improved the performance.
