2001 Buick Century problems

buick logo

Buick Century is the model name that was used by Buick for a line of upscale full-size cars from 1936 to 1942 and 1954 to 1958, as well as from 1973 to 2005 for mid-size cars.

The first Buick Century debuted as the Series 60 then renamed in 1936 as a shorter and lighter model featuring the same engine as the bigger Roadmaster and Limited series giving it more performance while using the shorter wheelbase body of the Buick Special. During the 1930s and 1940s it was Buick's companion to the top level Roadmaster and was offered as a 2-door and 4-door sedan and convertible. The Century name was used on six generations of cars of varying sizes as well as performance and trim levels. In 1969, Buick developed a concept car known as the Century Cruiser. In the 1970s, the Century Regal became a separate model and market positioning between the two products changed from year to year depending on sales. The Century was updated to front wheel drive in 1982 and was Buick's 2-door coupe, 4-door sedan and station wagon, with regular updates and feature upgrades as customer preferences changed over time.

Series 60 (1930–1935)

Originally, the Series 60 had the 331.4 cu in (5.4 L) OHV Buick Straight-6 engine from the Series 70, developing 99 bhp (74 kW) at 2,800 rpm. It had, at the beginning of the generation, a full-length running board denoting the top model for Buick at the time, shared with the short wheelbase, entry level Series 40. In 1930, GM built 38,180 cars. The bodystyles available were torpedo, sedan, coupe, and roadster convertible, using GM's "B-body" platform. Starting with this generation, all GM cars shared a corporate appearance as a result of the "Art and Colour Section" headed by Harley J. Earl and modest yearly changes were introduced to freshen the appearance.

In 1931, the running board was reduced and the OHV 220.7 cu in (3.6 L) Buick Straight-8 engine was introduced that developed 90 bhp (67 kW). Aesthetically, the Series 60 remained almost unchanged, and the same fact occurred also in the following year. In 1931 and 1932, a total of 55,135 were produced.

In 1933, the length of the body increased and the radiator was now concealed behind a façade with a grille. The engine power increased to 97 hp (72 kW), and 1933 was the first year all GM vehicles were installed with optional vent windows which were initially called “No Draft Individually Controlled Ventilation” later renamed "Ventiplanes". In 1934, the appearance was changed to a more rounded appearance, with a new OHV 278 cu in (4.6 L) eight-cylinder engine and 100 hp. In 1935, the model remained almost unchanged while the body style selections were similar to larger Buicks but more affordably priced. Six choices were available to include both 2- and 4-door convertibles using the term "phaeton" for the 4-door convertible with a listed price of US$1,675 ($37,224 in 2023 dollars ). Total production from 1933 to 1935 was 31,385. In 1936, the model changed its name to "Century".

POWER TRAIN,ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC) PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2008-07-10
  • VIN: 2G4WS52J811
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC)
  • Summary: HAD TRANSMISSION REPLACED AT AUTHORIZED GMC DEALERSHIP MAY 2006 .THIS CAME WITH A WARRANTY. SEVERAL TIMES OVER SEVERAL SUMMERS SINCE THEN HAVE TAKEN VEHICLE INTO DEALERSHIP WITH CONCERNS THAT HAPPENED AFTER VEHICLE WOULD BE DRIVEN IN HIGH HUMIDITY HIGH TEMPERATURE DAYS AFTER TRAVELING A MINIMUM OF 60 MILES MOSTLY ON STATE HIGHWAYS THAT ARE QUITE ROUGH AND CURVY, I.E. IT WOULD TAKE ABOUT 90 MINUTES OR MORE TOGO THIS DISTANCE. THEN WHEN IN BUMPER TO BUMPER TRAFFIC AND TRYING TO MOVE FORWARD OR STOPPING THE CAR'S AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION WOULD CAUSE THE VEHICLE TO SHAKE LIKE JUMPING INTO THE WRONG GEAR AND IN MORE THAN ONE TIME THE CAR'S ENGINE WOULD DIE. IT ALWAYS HAPPENED AT LOW SPEEDS SO LUCKILY WE DIDN'T LOOSE CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. BUT, THE ONLY WAY TO STOP THIS FROM CONTINUING WAS TO STOP AND PARK TO LET THE ENGINE AND OR COOL DOWN. WE EVEN PUT ON THE HEATER WHILE DRIVING TO HELP REDUCE THE TEMPERATURE GAUGE TO GO BELOW THE HALFWAY MARK. THIS CAR WAS PURCHASED IN SHELTON, WA NOT IN KY, SO WE NEVER EXPERIENCED THIS PRIOR TO TRANSMISSION REPLACEMENT. THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT HAS NEVER BEEN ABLE TO DUPLICATE PROBLEM, NOW THE CRUISE CONTROL HAS STOPPED WORKING. WE HAVE DASHBOARD WARNINGS CONTINUALLY STATING LOW OIL, SERVICE ENGINE SOON (WHEN JUST COMPLETED), ETC. *TR

Negative 2001 Buick Century car reviews

  1. Benedict Conn 2024-09-26

The transmission was replaced at 69,000 miles. It is unfortunate that Buick did not provide support in this matter. Based on my personal experience, I cannot recommend purchasing a Buick. However, I acknowledge that others may have had positive experiences with the brand.

I was given this car as my first car. Although I don't remember much about it, I do recall that it had over 130k miles and was leaking oil. Unfortunately, I only had it for 2 weeks before I fell asleep at 6 AM and crashed into a utility pole, causing the car to be totaled. Thankfully, I was perfectly fine and only received a small scratch over my eyebrow from the airbag.

I didn't get to pick this vehicle nor would i again. however, i'm also not 75 years old. For the time I had this vehicle, it did what it needed to do until 100k miles. I probably replaced my intake gaskets 3x on this car in 5 years. Buick used a cheap plastic part instead of metal. This caused a lot of issues. My buick overheated quite often due to these issues as well. It was finally laid to rest when the engine started smoking like crazy after driving it. To be fair, i paid $4k for this car and got 8 years out of it. I also put easily $6k into repairing the thing. Aside from mechanical issues and the fact that it's usually driven by grandmas, it was relatively comfortable. Considering it was a 2001, the sound system was ok, (concert theater II). it did alright in the South Dakota winters as long as the tires were good and you didn't drive like a teenager. Reasonable passenger/cargo space.

I have driven this car very gently and it seems to have paid off as I haven't had any problems with it, even though it has now covered 91,000 miles. However, I must admit that I find it quite boring to drive and I always feel like trading it in as soon as I finish driving it. I also feel that the vehicle is a little too high, but it's a good car for seating adults.

Looking for a quiet car? This is it! I cannot believe the change in road noise with this car. Although, the side mirrors need to be redesigned as I must readjust them when I want to park the car. On the bright side, I love the way the back seat folds in 2 parts and the fact that both front seats are completely adjustable. Additionally, it handles well on and off the highway and has great mileage too!

No problems with vehicle whatsoever. I'm so glad to hear that you've had such a positive experience with your car, especially since you drive mostly on surface streets. It's great to know that this car has been outstanding for you. I hope you won't hesitate to consider buying another one in the future.

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share my experience with my car. I bought it brand new three years ago and I have been extremely happy with it. I have not had any issues with it whatsoever. One of my favourite features is the bench seats, which allow me to comfortably seat up to six people in a car that is not particularly large. Additionally, I am thrilled with the gas mileage - I get an incredible 31 mpg on the highway, which is impressive for a mid-size car. The only thing I would change is to have a little more power. I wish it came with the 3.8 litre engine instead of the 3.1. Thank you for taking the time to read my thoughts!
