How many miles do Infiniti QX4 last?
Simply the most reliable car I've ever owned. I am the 2nd owner and bought this car in 2011 at 134,000 , give or take. My work has me commuting all over, and in a mere 9 years I have racked up another 180,000 miles. In the past, I would consider selling a car approaching that 200,000 milestone.
Does a 2001 Infiniti QX4 have a timing belt?
For model years 1997–2000, the Infiniti QX4 was powered by Nissan's the 3.3L V6 engine which has a timing belt. But for the model years 2001–2003 the engine of the Infiniti QX4 was replaced with Nissan's 3.5L engine which has a timing chain.
When did they stop making Infiniti QX4?
The INFINITI QX4 production run ended following the 2003 model year. The 'QX' branding would continue on to have an impact on INFINITI's sport utility and crossover product selection.
Is Infiniti QX4 body on frame?
But don't let all this luxury fool you. The QX4 is still one tough soldier. Like the Pathfinder, the QX4 uses MonoFrame construction, a hybrid of unibody and body-on-frame design, providing a solid platform.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2015-07-24
- VIN: JNRDR09Y51W
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: I WAS SMELLING GAS FUMES WHILE MY CAR WAS PARKED IN THE GARAGE. I COULD SEE SOMETHING WET IN THE WHEEL WELL NEAR WHERE THE GAS TANK IS FILLED. HAD IT REPAIRED AT MY INFINITI DEALER, AND THEY REPLACED THE FUEL FILLER TUBE AND HOSES. IT REMINDED ME OF A RECALL NOTICE I RECEIVED IN 2008. IT WAS FOR THE FUEL FILLER TUBE AND HOSES. THEY WERE KNOW TO HAVE CORRODED DUE TO EXPOSURE TO ROAD SALTS. I HAD MY CAR INSPECTED IN 2008 AND THEY SAID EVERYTHING WAS OK AT THE TIME. HOWEVER, BEING ABLE TO SMELL FUMES IN MY GARAGE, I KNOW THAT IT CORRODED THROUGH. THE DEALER AND INFINITI CONSUMER AFFAIRS STATE THAT BECAUSE I DON'T LIVE IN THEIR DERIVED LIST OF STATES THAT "REGULARLY USE SALT IN THE WINTER", THAT I AM NOT ELIGIBLE FOR FREE REPLACEMENT OF THE DEFECTIVE PART. I DO TRAVEL THROUGH A COUPLE OF THE AFFECTED STATES, BUT THE CAR IS NOT REGISTERED IN ONE. THE RECALL NOTICE STATES: "BECAUSE YOUR QX4 IS NOT REGISTERED IN ONE OF THE ABOVE STATES, IT DOES NOT HAVE TO BE REPAIRED. HOWEVER, AT YOUR REQUEST, YOUR INFINITI DEALER WILL INSPECT, AND IF NECESSARY, REPLACE THE FUEL FILLER TUBE ASSEMBLY WITH A NEW ONE WITH AN IMPROVED COATING PROCESS. THIS FREE SERVICE SHOULD TAKE ABOUT ONE AND A HALF HOURS..." THE NOTICE ALSO STATES TO "LEAVE THIS NOTICE IN YOUR QX4 FOR ANY FUTURE OWNERS." THIS TELLS ME THERE IS NO LENGTH OF TIME WHERE THE RECALL NOTICE BECOMES INACTIVE. IT WAS INSPECTED AT THE TIME AND NO REPAIRS WERE NECESSARY THEN. HOWEVER, THE PROBLEM DID DEVELOP, AND NOW THEY DO NOT CONSIDER IT MEETING THE CRITERIA OF THE RECALL. I THINK IT MATCHES EXACTLY. ....UPDATED 10-27-15 *BF *CN

STEERING,SUSPENSION,WHEELS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2014-06-09
- VIN: JNRDR07Y71W
- Components: STEERING,SUSPENSION,WHEELS
- Summary: MY 13-YEAR-OLD AND SEVERELY RUSTED INFINITI 4WD SUV HAS BEEN RECALLED FOR CORROSION PROBLEMS AT THE DRIVER-SIDE STRUT TOWER. I WILL BE TOWING IT TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR AN INSPECTION BECAUSE I'M AFRAID TO DRIVE IT. MY CAR HAS A FIST-SIZED HOLE THROUGH THE FENDER WELL IN THE AREA DESCRIBED IN THE RECALL NOTICE, SO IT IS PROBABLY NOT REPAIRABLE. BUT MY CAR ALSO HAS A RUSTED OUT AND SEVERELY WEAKENED UNIBODY FRAME AT ANOTHER CRITICAL AREA THAT WOULD CERTAINLY CAUSE A LOSS OF CONTROL AND PROBABLY A CRASH WHEN IT IS FINALLY STRESSED TO THE BREAKING POINT. THIS AREA IS ON THE FRONT PASSENGER-SIDE WHERE THE MOUNTING PAD FOR THE A-FRAME REAR PIVOT POINT ATTACHES TO THE FRAME. I HAVE MADE THE DEALERSHIP AWARE OF THIS AND SENT THEM SOME PICTURES, AND THEY REFERRED ME TO THE MANUFACTURER'S CUSTOMER SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE. HE TOLD ME THAT THE DEALERSHIP MAY REFUSE TO DO THE RECALL REPAIR, AFTER EVALUATING MY CAR, UNLESS I HAVE THE "OTHER DAMAGE" (WHICH WOULD RENDER THE CAR UNSAFE) REPAIRED PRIOR TO THEIR INSPECTION. IF THEY DON'T DO THE RECALL REPAIR, OR DETERMINE THAT IT IS BEYOND REPAIR (BASED ENTIRELY ON THE AREA AFFECTED BY THE RECALL), MY CAR MAY BE DISQUALIFIED FROM THE REPURCHASE PROGRAM REMEDY. I MAY BE REQUIRED TO TOW MY CAR OFF OF THEIR LOT TO AVOID STORAGE FEES. THIS SEEMS LIKE A MANUFACTURER LOOPHOLE, THEY HAVE THE RIGHT TO REFUSE TO DO THE RECALL BECAUSE OF OTHER PROBLEMS, AND DISQUALIFY MY CAR FOR A REMEDY? THEY HAVE ACCEPTED RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE LACK OF CORROSION PROTECTION IN ONE CRITICAL AREA, BUT NOT FOR OTHERS? WHAT COULD I, AS A CAR OWNER, HAVE DONE TO PREVENT THIS DAMAGE? I FEEL IT'S THE MANUFACTURER THAT IS AT FAULT. A $35,000 CAR SHOULD LAST LONGER THAN 13 YEARS! SO I AM SUBMITTING THIS COMPLAINT IN CASE OTHERS HAVE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM AS I AND TO HELP FORCE THE MANUFACTURER TO TAKE OWNERSHIP OF THIS SERIOUS MANUFACTURING FLAW AND ISSUE A RECALL. *TR
STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2014-04-01
- VIN: JNRDR07YX1W
- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: BODY FRAME RUSTED BEHIND THE FRONT WHEEL ON PASSENGER SIDE. WHEN I TRY TO REPLACE THE FLAT TIRE , THE CAR COLLAPSE OVER THE JACK. THE CAR FRAME BROKE. *TR
SUSPENSION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2013-12-18
- Components: SUSPENSION
- Summary: TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 INFINITI QX4. THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 20 MPH WHEN A GRINDING NOISE FROM THE FRONT DRIVER'S SIDE WHEEL WAS HEARD AS THE CONTACT ATTEMPTED A TURN. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHERE THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE DRIVER'S SIDE STRUT WAS RUSTED AND DAMAGED. THE CONTACT INFORMED THE MANUFACTURER OF THE DEFECT BUT NO REMEDY WAS OFFERED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 84,000.
STRUCTURE,EQUIPMENT ADAPTIVE/MOBILITY PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2013-11-01
- VIN: JNRDR07Y31W
- Components: STRUCTURE,EQUIPMENT ADAPTIVE/MOBILITY
- Summary: THE BUILT-ON RUNNING BOARDS (THESE ARE NOT AN ADD-ON FEATURE TO THE VEHICLE, BUT CAME STANDARD ON ALL QX-4S) HAVE BRACKETS AND A TUBULAR STEEL SUPPORT BEAMS THAT SUPPORT THE WEIGHT OF ANY PASSENGER STEPPING ON THEM TO ENTER THE VEHICLE. THE SUPPORT BEAM AND SUPPORT BRACKETS HAVE ENTIRELY RUSTED AWAY; THERE IS LITTLE TO NO OTHER RUST ON OTHER AREAS OF THE VEHICLE. A LOCAL BODY SHOP IDENTIFIED AND NOTIFIED THE OWNER OF THE DANGER ASSOCIATED WITH NON-SUPPORTED RUNNING BOARDS. A CONSUMER COULD EASILY BE INJURED IF STEPPING ON THE RUNNING BOARDS TO ENTER THE VEHICLE AND HAVING THEM COLLAPSE. THE INJURY CERTAINLY COULD BE MORE ACUTE FOR ELDERLY, DISABLED, OR CHILDREN IN THE EVENT OF A COLLAPSE. THE TUBULAR STEEL SUPPORT BEAMS AND BRACKETS HAVE NO RUST INHIBITOR ON THEM WHILE THE OTHER METAL SECTIONS OF THE RUNNING BOARDS WERE COATED WITH RUST INHIBITOR AND SHOW NO RUST. THERE WAS A DESIGN FLAW EITHER ASSOCIATED WITH THE TYPE OF METAL USED OR A LACK OF RUST INHIBITOR ON THE PARTS THAT HAVE DISINTEGRATED. THE COST TO REPLACE IS QUITE EXORBITANT AND THE REPLACEMENTS MAY HAVE THE SAME DESIGN FLAW. THE SHORT TERM SOLUTION HAS BEEN TO ENTIRELY REMOVE THE RUNNING BOARDS OFF OF THE VEHICLE TO ELIMINATE THE DANGER. THIS MAKES FOR A TALL VERTICAL STEP-IN, BUT IS LESS RISKY THEN THE FAULTY RUNNING BOARDS. *TR
STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2010-08-01
- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: I BELIEVE THE CAR'S RUNNING BOARDS ARE A SAFETY HAZARD DUE TO SERIOUS RUST DAMAGE CAUSING WEAKNESS OF THE UNDERLYING STRUCTURE. THE HAZARD CAN MANIFEST ITSELF AS THE RUNNING BOARDS CAN EASY FAIL AND THE DRIVER OR ANY PASSENGER CAN FALL AS A RESULT. THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM FOR QX4S FROM MODEL YEARS 1997 TO 2002 OR LATER. OBVIOUSLY, IT IS WORSE FOR OLDER CARS IN AREA'S WHERE SALT IS USED ON THE ROADS IN WINTER. I PETITIONED INIFINITI TO INVESTIGATE THE HAZARD AND CONSIDER RECTIFYING IT. THEY CLAIMED RUST DAMAGE WAS NOT COVERED AND WOULD DO NOTHING. HOWEVER, I NOTE THEY IN FACT HAD A STRUT HOUSING RECALL FOR OUR QX4 TO FIX RUST DAMAGE. *TR
SUSPENSION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2010-02-01
- VIN: JNRDR07Y21W
- Components: SUSPENSION
- Summary: 2001 INFINITI QX4. CONSUMER STATES VEHICLE PULLS HARD TO THE LEFT *TGW THE DEALER INFORMED THE CONSUMER THE LEFT FRONT STRUT TOWER HAD RUSTED OUT, AND SEPARATING THE STRUT FROM THE FRAME. THE CONSUMER WAS INFORMED THE REPAIR WOULD COST SEVERAL THOUSAND DOLLARS. THE CONSUMER JUNKED THE VEHICLE. THE CONSUMER IS SEEKING REIMBURSEMENT DUE TO A MANUFACTURER'S DEFECT, WHICH RESULTED IN A RECALL. *JB UPDATED 06/19/12. *JB

2001 Infiniti Qx4 recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 4 recalls for different components of the 2001 Infiniti Qx4.
- Manufacturer: NISSAN NORTH AMERICA, INC.
- Components: STEERING:COLUMN
- Summary: NISSAN IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 1996-2004 PATHFINDER AND MODEL YEAR 1997-2003 INFINITI QX4 VEHICLES ORIGINALLY SOLD, OR CURRENTLY REGISTERED IN, CONNECTICUT, DELAWARE, IOWA, ILLINOIS, INDIANA, MASSACHUSETTS, MAINE, MARYLAND, MICHIGAN, MINNESOTA, MISSOURI, NEW HAMPSHIRE, NEW JERSEY, NEW YORK, OHIO, PENNSYLVANIA, RHODE ISLAND, VERMONT, WASHINGTON D.C., WEST VIRGINIA AND WISCONSIN. IN AREAS OF THE COUNTRY IN WHICH HEAVY CONCENTRATIONS OF ROAD SALT ARE USED, A MIXTURE OF SNOW/WATER AND SALT MAY ENTER AN ASSEMBLY LOCATION HOLE IN THE UPPER STRUT HOUSING, CAUSING WATER TO COLLECT AT THE MATING SURFACE OF THE STRUT HOUSING PANEL AND THE INNER HOOD LEDGE ASSEMBLY. OVER TIME, THIS SNOW/WATER AND SALT INTRUSION MAY RESULT IN CORROSION OF THE STRUT TOWER HOUSING IN SOME SUBJECT VEHICLES.
- Consequence: THE STRUT HOUSING MAY CRACK AND PULL AWAY FROM THE INNER HOOD LEDGE ASSEMBLY. THIS MAY LEAD TO GRINDING NOISES, INCREASED STEERING EFFORT, AND POSSIBLY THE STEERING COLUMN TO BREAK, RESULTING IN THE LOSS OF STEERING CONTROL, WHICH COULD RESULT IN A CRASH.
- Remedy: NISSAN WILL INSPECT THE STRUT HOUSING AND REPAIR THE VEHICLES AS NECESSARY, FREE OF CHARGE. AN INTERIM NOTIFICATION LETTER WAS SENT OUT IN MAY 2011. THE SECOND NOTICE WAS MAILED ON JULY 25, 2011. OWNERS MAY CONTACT NISSAN AT 1-800-647-7261.
- Manufacturer: NISSAN NORTH AMERICA, INC.
- Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:STORAGE:TANK ASSEMBLY:FILLER PIPE AND CAP
- Summary: ON CERTAIN VEHICLES ORIGINALLY SOLD IN OR CURRENTLY REGISTERED IN THE STATES OF CONNECTICUT, DELAWARE, IOWA, ILLINOIS, INDIANA, KENTUCKY, MASSACHUSETTS, MAINE, MARYLAND, MICHIGAN, MINNESOTA, NEW HAMPSHIRE, NEW JERSEY, NEW YORK, OHIO, PENNSYLVANIA, RHODE ISLAND, TENNESSEE, VERMONT, VIRGINIA, WEST VIRGINIA , WISCONSIN AND THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, DURING THE COATING PROCESS OF THE FUEL FILLER TUBE ASSEMBLY, AN INSUFFICIENT AMOUNT OF COATING MAY HAVE BEEN APPLIED AT THE LOWER MOUNTING BRACKET. THIS COULD RESULT IN AN OPENING IN THE COATING WHICH CAN ALLOW WATER TO ENTER AND MAKE CONTACT WITH THE BARE METAL OF THE TUBE.
- Consequence: THIS MAY RESULT IN SURFACE RUST BUT NOT PERFORATION OF THE TUBE. HOWEVER, IN THOSE AREAS OF THE COUNTRY WHICH USE HEAVY CONCENTRATIONS OF ROAD SALT IN THE WINTER, IF A MIXTURE OF SNOW/WATER AND SALT MAKES CONTACT WITH THE BARE METAL, CORROSION MAY OCCUR TO A DEGREE WHICH RESULTS IN PERFORATION OF THE TUBE. IN THIS CASE FUEL LEAKAGE MAY OCCUR WHEN FILLING THE TANK. FUEL LEAKAGE, IN THE PRESENCE OF AN IGNITION SOURCE, COULD RESULT IN A FIRE.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE FUEL FILLER TUBE ASSEMBLY WITH A NEW ONE WITH AN IMPROVED COATING PROCESS. THE RECALL BEGAN ON NOVEMBER 26, 2007. OWNERS MAY CONTACT NISSAN AT 1-800-647-7261.
- Manufacturer: NISSAN NORTH AMERICA, INC.
- Components: STRUCTURE:BODY:HATCHBACK/LIFTGATE:HINGE AND ATTACHMENTS
- Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES. SOME OF THE BRACKETS USED TO ATTACH THE TWO GAS STRUTS TO THE REAR DOOR (HATCH) MAY HAVE BEEN IMPROPERLY MADE. AT HIGH AMBIENT TEMPERATURES, THE INCREASE IN GAS PRESSURE IN THE STRUT(S) COULD CAUSE ONE OR BOTH BRACKETS TO BEND, RESULTING IN THE STRUTS DETACHING FROM THE BRACKET(S) WHEN OPENING OR CLOSING THE REAR DOOR.
- Consequence: IF BOTH STRUTS DETACH FROM THE BRACKETS, THE DOOR WILL RAPIDLY FALL DOWN, POSSIBLY STRIKING SOMEONE AND CAUSING SERIOUS INJURY.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE STRUT BRACKETS. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN SEPTEMBER 24, 2001. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT NISSAN AT 1-800-647-7261.
- Manufacturer: NISSAN NORTH AMERICA, INC.
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION
- Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: PASSENGER VEHICLES. THESE VEHICLES MAY HAVE AN IGNITION LOCK ASSEMBLY WITH IMPROPERLY SEATED KEY CYLINDER CAP CONNECTOR PINS. VIBRATION CAN CAUSE THE CONNECTING PINS TO LOOSEN AND/OR FALL OUT ALLOWING THE KEY CYLINDER CAP TO DISENGAGE FROM THE KEY CYLINDER.
- Consequence: IF THIS OCCURS, THE STEERING WHEEL LOCK ROD CAN MOVE, WHICH COULD LOCK THE STEERING WHEEL, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE IGNITION LOCK ASSEMBLY AND ASSEMBLIES WITH LOOSE OR MISSING END CAP CONNECTOR PINS WILL BE REPLACED. A RING CLIP WILL BE INSTALLED ON ALL OTHERS TO PREVENT LOOSENING OF THE PINS.

Infiniti can make better use of the Magtag mechanics since they rarely have the opportunity to make major repairs on a 2001 Infiniti QX4.

For the price, you really can't go wrong with this SUV. If you're in the market for a practical on-road vehicle that handles like a car, then look no further. The Auto-4wd feature makes it perfect for city driving, with the added bonus of being able to take it off-road with ease.

It's a great SUV! Fun to drive, capable off-road, and very powerful and reliable!

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share some information about my vehicle with you. I am the second owner and purchased it with 41k miles. While it was under warranty, I had some parts replaced including the transmission solenoid kit, both side ball joints, both side outer CV boots, left strut bar, driver seat heated seat switch, viscous coupler (due to noise from the fan), the entire audio system (CD, radio and cassette), driver seat motor, and seat track assembly (due to rocking when moving back and forth), and the cigarette lighter. Unfortunately, I am currently experiencing some issues now that my warranty has expired. Specifically, the air intake solenoid needs to be replaced as the car is pulling hard. Additionally, I am disappointed to report that the rear right side is sitting higher than the left side. I have consulted with the dealer and they have informed me that it is within vehicle specifications (RL:815mm, RR:825mm). Please let me know if you have any advice or suggestions. Thank you!

That's great to hear that you're enjoying your SUV! It sounds like it's a significant upgrade from your previous Grand Cherokee. Thank you for sharing your positive experience with us.

I had some issues with this car, actually two of them. Unfortunately, they both had the same problems. The transmission was problematic even though the mileage was only 75k. I had to replace the transmission, alternator, pulleys, rotors, and strut. I also had to replace the turn signal stick and muffler pipes. The brakes were not great and the windows were slow. However, if you are interested in buying this car, I would recommend the 2003 model as they may have resolved some of these issues. It's worth being cautious though, as I had to file a lemon law case. Just a heads up!

This is a really fun little car to drive! While the MPG is a bit low, the pep of the car somewhat compensates for it. I bought it with 90K on it and, for the most part, it is in new condition. My biggest complaint is with the Bose/Clarion 6 CD/Cassette stereo. Unfortunately, I had the car for only 4 months before getting what is known as the dreaded err 2 message on the CD screen. After a bit of investigation, I found out that this is a very common problem, peculiar to the 2001 model. Apparently, there is a plastic gear in the CD changer that strips out. I have read of dealer quotes up to $500 to fix this issue.
