1999 Volvo V70 problems

volvo logo

The Volvo V70 is an executive car manufactured and marketed by Volvo Cars from 1996 to 2016 across three generations. The name V70 combines the letter V, standing for versatility, and 70, denoting relative platform size (i.e., a V70 is larger than a V40, but smaller than a V90).

The first generation (1996–2000) debuted in November 1996. It was based on the P80 platform and was available with front and all-wheel drive (AWD), the latter marketed as the V70 AWD. In September 1997, a crossover version called the V70 XC or V70 Cross Country was introduced. The sedan model was called Volvo S70.

The second generation (2000–2007) debuted in spring 2000. It was based on the P2 platform and, as with its predecessor, was also offered as an all-wheel drive variant marketed as the V70 AWD and as a crossover version initially called V70 XC. For the 2003 model year, the crossover was renamed to XC70. The sedan model was called Volvo S60.

The third generation (2007–2016) debuted in February 2007. It was based on the P3 platform and marketed as the V70 and the XC70. Production of the V70 ended on 25 April 2016, the XC70 continued until 13 May 2016. The sedan model was called Volvo S80.

Common 1999 Volvo V70 problems

The Volvo V70 1999 is known for a variety of common problems based on complaints from owners of this car. One of the most common issues is the Upper Engine Mount Failure. This problem occurs due to the upper engine mount, also known as the upper engine stabilizer, which helps control engine movement during acceleration. The mount often fails in as little as 10,000 miles, resulting in an alarming knock when accelerating or shifting gears. Volvo has introduced improved designs, but the problem persists even in newer models.

Another common issue is the Anti Sway Bar End Link Failure. The anti-sway bar end links with ball joint connections in all 1993-2000 850, S70, C70, and V70 models, as well as most 2001-2008 S60, S80, V70, and XC 90 models, are prone to wearing out and causing knocking and clunking sounds. If left unattended, the links can break, disconnecting the anti-sway bar from the chassis, leading to poor handling response and random clunks and knocks.

The Odometer/Tripmeter Failure is another common problem in 1993-1997 850 models. The small plastic gear driving the odometer and trip meter functions is prone to cracking as it ages, resulting in intermittent or complete loss of odometer/trip meter function. Since Volvo does not sell the gear or the speedometer separately, the repair can cost over $1000 at the dealer. However, using an updated gear kit and DVD install guide, the repair can be done for under $50 and 1-2 hours of your time.

The Crankcase Ventilation System Failure, also known as the PCV/Flame Trap, is another common issue in these models. The system prevents the build-up of pressure inside the engine, but it often clogs up with oil deposits. Once the system plugs up, crankcase pressure builds high enough to cause oil to be forced past engine seals, resulting in oil leaks around the engine.

The Front Strut Mount Failure is another common problem in all 1993-2000 850, S70, C70, and V70 models, as well as most 2001-2008 S60, S80, V70, and XC 90 models. The rubber-encased upper spring seat/strut mount is prone to failure, causing a clunking noise when driving over bumps or accelerating.

The Fuel Door Hinge Failure is a common problem in all 1993-2000 850, S70, C70, and V70 models, as well as most 2001-2008 S60, S80, V70, and XC 90 models. The plastic gas cap door hinge commonly fails at around 60,000 miles, leaving the gas door hanging from the side of the Volvo, which doesn't look cool and is not good for the paint job.

Lastly, the Shift Interlock Failure is a common problem in these models. The shift interlock is an electronic override that prevents the driver from being able to shift the car from “PARK” into “DRIVE” unless the driver is applying the brakes. When this part fails, the car can no longer be driven unless the driver happens to know that there is an emergency override button that can be pressed to allow the shifter to be moved.

What is the common problem with Volvo V70?

The top engine mount is known for failing on the V70. When you are taking off, or changing gear you may hear a loud knocking noise. Another symptom of the top engine mount failing is when you open the bonnet, have someone rev the engine for you and if it shakes excessively then this is the cause.

What is the best year of Volvo V70 to buy?

Going back to the 2000-2007 era still makes sense. This V70 still looks great and can have kiddie- friendly rear seats in the boot, but mostly it's a proper load-lugger, with its posh carpeted cargo bay. Note that it got something of a revamp in 2004.

What is the life expectancy of a Volvo V70?

That being said, Volvo Cars is among the top brands when it comes to longevity. Among the factors mentioned above, regular maintenance and driving style can make a huge difference. Overall, expect to see your Volvo vehicle last for over 200,000 miles if you give it proper care each year.

What is the gas mileage on a 1999 Volvo V70?

Based on data from 38 vehicles, 1,985 fuel-ups and 608,867 miles of driving, the 1999 Volvo V70 gets a combined Avg MPG of 21.16 with a 0.25 MPG margin of error.

NOW THEY SAY IT'S THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER. THIS IS EXTREMELY FRUSTRATING AND SCARY. THERE SEEMS TO BE NO RHYME OR REASON TO WHY THE CAR STALLS. SOMETIMES, IT WILL ACT AS IF THERE'S A CLOGGED FUEL LINE, THEN IT STALLS THE NEXT TIME I HAVE TO DECELERATE. OTHER TIMES, IT DIES WHEN I'M DRIVING. *DT

WE WERE WAITING IN A DRIVE THRU WITH THE CAR ON, BUT THE A/C HEATING UNIT WAS OFF. THE MAKE , MODEL AND YEAR OF OUR CAR IS A 1999 VOLVO V70. IT WAS TOWED TO OUR MECHANIC WHO SAID THE HEATER CORE WENT BAD AND THE HOSES RUPTURED. HE BYPASSED THE HEATER UNIT TO SAVE MONEY ON REPAIRS. WHEN MY HUSBAND WAS DRIVING THE VEHICLE HOME IT RAN HOT, HE PROMPTLY TOOK IT BACK TO THE REPAIR SHOP. THE RADIATOR FAN WAS INOPERATIVE THE MAIN CABIN FLOOR WAS FLOODED WITH COOLANT AND FOUL SMELLING. WE NO LONGER HAD FAITH IN THE CAR AND SOLD THE CAR TO THE MECHANIC. WE'RE JUST HAPPY WE WEREN'T DRIVING THE VEHICLE ON THE ROAD WHEN THAT HAPPENED. *TR

POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2008-06-01
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: THE INDICATOR LIGHT ON THE GEAR SELECTOR HAS BURNT OUT. THERE'S A 'SIGNAL-ORANGE' COLORED INDICATOR MARK THAT TRACKS THE GEAR SELECTOR AGAINST THE SLATE GREY COLOR SHIFT ASSEMBLY PUT THERE AS A SAFETY FEATURE SO YOU KNOW WHAT GEAR YOU'RE IN AND DON'T ACCIDENTALLY TAKE OFF IN AN UNINTENDED DIRECTION, FORWARD OR REVERSE, OR ROLL INTO SOMEONE WHILE UNINTENTIONALLY FINDING YOURSELF IN NEUTRAL. WELL NOW AT NIGHT UNLESS YOU TURN ON THE INTERIOR LIGHT, YOU CAN JUST GUESS WHAT GEAR YOU'RE IN BECAUSE WHEN IT'S DARK IN THE CAB YOU CAN'T SEE AT ALL WHAT'S WHAT AS FAR A GEAR SELECTION. I FIND THIS REMARKABLE. AT AGE 49, WITH ALL THE CARS WE'VE OWNED AND ALL I'VE HAD UNTIL OVER 100,000 MILES, NEVER DO I RECALL ANY DASHBOARD TYPE INDICATOR LAMPS BURNING OUT, I THOUGHT THEY JUST MADE THEM THAT WAY BECAUSE THEY'RE NOT REPLACEABLE OR SOMETHING. I ASSUMED THEY WERE LIKE NEON OR LIGHT EMITTING DIODES THAT CAN NEVER BURN OUT AND WOULD FUNCTION FOREVER OR UNTIL SOMETHING PHYSICALLY BROKE THEM. HERE'S A TIP FOR YOU FOLKS AT THE NHTSA AND YOUR FAMILIES: AVOID VOLVO'S IN PARKING LOTS AT NIGHT, TURNS OUT WE HAVE ONLY AN IDEA OF THE GEAR WE'RE IN BEFORE THE CAR STARTS MOVING, IN THE DARK THE LACK OF CERTAINTY PROVIDED BY A MANUFACTURING FAILURE COULD PROVE DANGEROUS. VISIBILITY PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2008-01-01
  • Components: VISIBILITY
  • Summary: ABOUT A 1999 V70 GLT VOLVO: THE SUN VISOR IS SAGGING DOWN AND IT UNEXPECTEDLY COMES INTO MY LINE OF SIGHT WHILE DRIVING. TO BE CLEAR, IT'S STRAIGHT AND IN OTHERWISE GOOD CONDITION, BUT IT JUST DOESN'T LOCK UP FLAT TO THE CEILING THE WAY IT SHOULD. CURRENTLY WHILE DEBATING THE RELATIVELY HIGH REPLACEMENT COST - $200 JUST FOR THE PART BECAUSE IT HAS A MIRROR AND LIGHT, I'VE GOT IT STRAPPED UP WITH A NYLON BELT, KEEPING IT OUT OF MY VIEW, BUT THEN I NOW HAVE NOTHING FOR LOW SUN DRIVING CONDITIONS. IT MAY SEEM PETTY TO MENTION THIS AS A SAFETY ISSUE, BUT IT DID COME DOWN AND PRESENT A VISUAL OBSTRUCTION TO ME WHILE DRIVING. ON THE OTHER HAND, THIS HAS NEVER OCCURRED IN MY NOW ALMOST 24 YEAR OLD SAAB, NOT EVEN WITH 240,000 MILES ON IT. NOR DO WE HAVE THIS PROBLEM ON MY WIFE'S '94 ACURA LEGEND, WHERE THERE ARE OVER 140,000 MILES OF USE AND AGE. NOR HAVE I HAD THIS PROBLEM IN OTHER CARS I'VE OWNED, BACK TO AND INCLUDING MY FIRST: THE '73 PINTO I HAD IN COLLEGE, I SOLD IT W/ 105,000 MI. AND DON?T RECALL THIS TYPE OF CONCERN! I JUST THINK ON A NEWER CAR, (THIS OCCURRED ON OUR NEWEST CAR EVER, AND BEFORE 80,000 MILES, I THINK I?VE BEEN FIGHTING TO KEEP THE VISOR UP SINCE 60,000 MI. AND NOW IT?S FINALLY FLOPPED DOWN) ONE SHOULDN'T SUDDENLY HAVE TO BE DODGING THEIR HEAD AROUND THE CAB TO SEE OUT THE FRONT WINDOW, WHILE FIDDLING WITH THE VISOR COMING DOWN, FINALLY PLACING IT TO THE SIDE, WHERE IT STILL SAGS BUT ONLY PROVIDING A MINOR OBSTRUCTION - OBVIOUSLY NOT NEAR AS CRITICAL AS BLOCKING ONE'S FRONT VIEW. SO WHAT AM I TO CONCLUDE: DO I REPLACE IT FOR $200 - PLUS LABOR - (TWO ACTUALLY, THE PASSENGER SIDE ONE IS GETTING READY TO DO THE SAME THING), AND THEN BE SUBJECT TO IT RECURRING? ALSO IT OCCURRED THE NIGHT BEFORE LEAVING ON A ROAD TRIP CT TO ROCHESTER, NY: I.E.: WESTERLY DRIVING INTO THE SUNSET AND THERE WAS NO TIME IN THE TRAVEL SCHEDULE TO DELAY FOR SUCH AN UNEXPECTED REPAIR. I HAD TO MAKE THE DRIVE WITH THE SUN VISOR OUT OF COMMISSION. *TR

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2005-01-01
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC
  • Summary: THE BRAKING SOMETIMES BECOMES DIMINISHED. THE PEDAL IS 'STIFF' AND NORMAL BAKING IS REDUCED. IT OCCURS SO RARELY THAT THERE IS NO WAY FOR ME TO EXPECT THAT IT WILL PRESENT FOR A MECHANIC ON A TEST DRIVE. OCCURRENCES ARE MANY DAYS OR EVEN WEEKS APART. THE SYMPTOM INVOLVES A DISTINCT VARIATION ON THE NORMAL BRAKING EXPERIENCE: A SLIGHT THROBBING OCCURS AND DIMINISHED STOPPING POWER IS AVAILABLE, I HAVE TO PRESS MARKEDLY HARDER TO GET THE CAR TO STOP. SCARY. THIS SYMPTOM IS SO INTERMITTENT AND FLEETING, IT SEEMS IT WOULD BE NEAR IMPOSSIBLE TO DEMONSTRATE AND TRACK DOWN. BUT EVERY TIME I EXPERIENCE IT, THE VERY SLIGHT PULSING DURING BRAKING AND ACCOMPANYING ADDITIONAL PEDAL PRESSURE REQUIRED TO ACHIEVE A NORMAL STOP, I WORRY. I'VE EVEN PULLED INTO A PARKING LOT AND TRIED IN AN ABANDON SECTION TO TEST IT AND TO GET IT TO REOCCUR FOR ME, BUT NEVER CAN. SO I WORRY. TO BE CLEAR, THE SITUATION FOR WHICH I'M CONCERNED HERE IS WHEN, ON RARE OCCASIONS, WHILE ROUTINE BRAKING, I EXPERIENCE THE NEED TO APPLY MORE PRESSURE THAN IS OTHERWISE TYPICAL AND USUAL. IT SCARES ME A BIT, BUT AS IT TURNS OUT, IN ALL THE INSTANCES SO FAR, IT'S OCCURRED ON CITY STREETS W/ RELATIVELY LOW SPEEDS INVOLVED AND LIGHT TRAFFIC SITUATIONS; (E.G.: I'M FIRST TO AN INTERSECTION W/ NO ONE IN FRONT OF ME, ETC.) BUT FOR FUTURE SITUATIONS THAT MIGHT REQUIRE A CRITICAL BRAKING, I REMAIN NATURALLY, CONCERNED. THE DANGER IS DISPLACED IN THE IMMEDIATE TERM WHERE THE REMEDY HAS BEEN, SIMPLY, APPLYING INCREASED PEDAL PRESSURE AND FEELING LUCKY NOT TO BE IN A CRITICAL BRAKING SITUATION. THEN I DON'T SEE THE PROBLEM AGAIN FOR SOME TIME. HAVE YOU HAD OTHER MENTIONS OF THIS TYPE OF PROBLEM WITH THE 1999 V70 GLT VOLVOS? *TR

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2008-07-14
  • VIN: YV1LW55A1X2
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: BACK IN JUNE OF 2008 - ON START UP MY 99 VOLVO V70 - WOULD ROUGH IDLE, REV TO 4000 AND WOULD NOT EXCEED 20 MPH. THE IDLE SOUNDED LIKE SNEAKERS IN A DRYER. I TOOK THE CAR TO MY GARAGE AND WAS QUOTED $2000.00 TO REPLACE THE ETM - I WAS TOLD BY MY GARAGE THAT THE ETM MAY STILL BE UNDER WARRANTY. AFTER SPEAKING WITH VOLVO USA - I WAS ADVISED THAT THIS PART WAS UNDER WARRANTY AND I SHOULD BRING TO THE NEAREST VOLVO DEALERSHIP. I DID. BOSTON VOLVO VILLAGE - DID A SOFTWARE UPDATE AND AFTER THAT REPORTED NO ISSUES WITH THE ETM - THEY CLAIMED CRACKED VACUUM HOSES WERE THE PROBLEMS. THEY REPLACED THE HOSES AND RETURN THE CAR. THE CAR BROKE DOWN A DAY LATER - REV TO 4000, ROUGH IDLE, WON'T GO OVER 20 MPH - SNEAKERS IN WASHING MACHINE SOUND. I BROUGHT THE CAR BACK TO BOSTON VOLVO VILLAGE - THIS TIME THEY TOLD ME THAT I HAD AN BAD ACCELERATOR PEDAL - WHICH WAS REPLACE COST WAS $225.00. THE CAR BROKE DOWN A THIRD TIME - THIS TIME ON A BUSY HIGHWAY - I WAS ABLE TO PULL OFF - BUT IF NOT FOR SOME EXCELLENT DRIVING BY OTHERS ON THE ROAD THERE WOULD HAD BEEN A 3 CAR PILE UP. BOSTON VOLVO VILLAGE TOWED THE CAR BACK TO THEIR GARAGE. ONE OF THEIR EMPLOYEES ADMITTED TO ME THAT THE EMT WAS THE PROBLEM - BUT THAT VOLVO MAKES IT IMPOSSIBLE TO REPLACE THE ETM. *TR

Negative 1999 Volvo V70 car reviews

  1. Stephon Fisher 2025-01-08

This car has been a costly nightmare to maintain and has fallen apart before reaching 55k miles. Dealer servicing is exorbitantly expensive and the quality is subpar. However, this experience is not indicative of Volvo's overall reputation. It is unclear if Ford's acquisition of Volvo played a role in this decline. Despite this negative experience, it is important to note that every car brand has its flaws and it is worth exploring other options before making a final decision.

I traded my 2003 S40 because my family grew and the brakes were suspect. In June of '04, I traded for a 1999 used Volvo V70 from a Ford Dealership, thinking that since I already had an existing relationship, things would go smoothly. However, I have had some issues with the key staying stuck in the ignition upon shutting off the engine. Despite this, I am still optimistic and planning a summer trip to the East Coast to see how this vehicle responds. Stay tuned!

  3. Kole Brakus 2024-11-03

I have almost 90K miles on my car and it's still running pretty well. However, I have run into a few problems. The electrical system has been a bit of a challenge. I've lost count of how many times I've had to take my car to the dealer to have a headlight, tail-light, or turn signal bulb replaced or rewired. If you decide to purchase this car, be prepared to take it in for service on the electrical system frequently. On some cold mornings, the engine wouldn't start for me, and I've had to keep my foot on the gas at intersections (I have a manual transmission) to keep it from stalling. Fortunately, that usually fades away after about 5 minutes after starting the engine. Despite these issues, I still think it's an excellent car.

The car had some issues with power and ride quality, and unfortunately, the reliability was not up to par. The interior was also not very inspiring. During a road trip, I had an issue with the engine oil dipstick, which caused some oil to spill. I had to duct tape it back into place, but unfortunately, more problems arose. I had to replace the alternator, mass airflow sensors, and the engine throttle control sensor, which were all quite costly. Despite these challenges, I eventually decided to replace the car with an Isuzu Rodeo, which turned out to be a great decision.

  5. Caesar D'Amore 2024-07-11

I purchased this car brand new and initially had a positive experience. However, after the first year, I encountered a series of issues that significantly impacted my satisfaction with the vehicle. These issues included a transmission failure at only 16,000 miles, excessive tire wear, and the need to replace multiple engine mounts, the throttle assembly, and the leather seats. Additionally, the car had a persistent antifreeze leak and the steering wheel covering came off. Ultimately, I made the decision to part ways with the car and would not consider purchasing a Volvo again.

This black rocket is almost at the 200,000 mile mark, and I'm excited to earn her 200K merit badge. Like any Volvo, I can drive for 12 hours and feel like it's only been 2. I've followed all the recommended services and found the car to be a very economical vehicle. In fact, I went above and beyond and replaced everything at 150,000 miles, with the intention of keeping it for a long time. Now, I'm doing routine services myself, which I find incredibly easy with the help of friendly folks on the Internet. I was able to get a new heater blower for only $100 (on eBay) and it only took me 15 minutes -- seriously! Who needs a Volvo dealership?! I wish I had been doing this for all my Volvos!

Hi there! So, we bought this car with 50k miles and it had quite a few squeaks and rattles. Unfortunately, we had to replace the AC at 62k which cost us $1300. However, overall it's been a good car so far. Although, I do wonder about its future reliability. What do you think?

  3. Lemuel Morissette 2024-11-05

This is definitely an amazing family car! It has a luxurious feel while still maintaining a sporty silhouette. The option of a third seat, the ample space, and all the available options make it the only car I ever want to own. It's a perfect alternative to the typical SUV or frumpy minivan.

  4. Cristopher Nienow 2024-09-08

This car is a great alternative to a hefty SUV and provides a compelling reason to buy a car for hauling purposes. Its design is classic and if safety is a top priority for you, then look no further. It's also a wonderful starter car if you've never owned a Volvo before. Welcome to the Volvo family!

  5. Michel Abbott 2024-08-11

I love our wagon and we plan to keep it for as long as possible. We recently had to do some maintenance on it, but that's to be expected for a 10-year-old car. We've taken it on several 12+ hour road trips and always enjoy the ride. As someone who's six feet tall, I can say that it's one of the most comfortable cars I've ever been in.
