2002 Volvo V70 problems
The Volvo V70 is an executive car manufactured and marketed by Volvo Cars from 1996 to 2016 across three generations. The name V70 combines the letter V, standing for versatility, and 70, denoting relative platform size (i.e., a V70 is larger than a V40, but smaller than a V90).
The first generation (1996–2000) debuted in November 1996. It was based on the P80 platform and was available with front and all-wheel drive (AWD), the latter marketed as the V70 AWD. In September 1997, a crossover version called the V70 XC or V70 Cross Country was introduced. The sedan model was called Volvo S70.
The second generation (2000–2007) debuted in spring 2000. It was based on the P2 platform and, as with its predecessor, was also offered as an all-wheel drive variant marketed as the V70 AWD and as a crossover version initially called V70 XC. For the 2003 model year, the crossover was renamed to XC70. The sedan model was called Volvo S60.
The third generation (2007–2016) debuted in February 2007. It was based on the P3 platform and marketed as the V70 and the XC70. Production of the V70 ended on 25 April 2016, the XC70 continued until 13 May 2016. The sedan model was called Volvo S80.

Common 2002 Volvo V70 problems
The Volvo V70, produced in 2002, is a popular vehicle known for its rugged look and stylish design. However, like any other car, it is not immune to common problems. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues with the 2002 Volvo V70, based on owner complaints:
- Suspension: Volvo has stated that the V70 was not designed for serious off-roading due to potential problems with the suspension wearing out prematurely. This issue can affect all parts of the suspension system, leading to alignment and geometry problems. If you're considering a V70, it's essential to inquire about the vehicle's usage history, especially on rough roads. Look for uneven wear on the front and back tyres and compare either side. If there's something lacking in the general ride quality, such as unresponsive acceleration and a jumpy ride, the cause could be the electronic throttle module, which is known to gunk up over time.
- Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF): The DPF in the V70's diesel engine needs to be replaced every 75,000 miles. If the car repeatedly stalls and idles badly, it's likely that the DPF is blocked. Black smoke mixed with normal gases coming out of the exhaust is another sign of a DPF problem.
- Transmission: The V70's transmission is known for hard shifts or downshift bangs, which make quite a bit of noise and can be felt in the ride. If you experience this issue, the first step is to perform a software update, which is the easiest and cheapest solution. However, if the shifting remains erratic, a more extensive repair may be necessary.
- Door Lock: The door locks, including the tailgate, can have issues in the V70. If one door's lock, whether operated by the key or the button, doesn't work, it's likely that the actuator inside the latch area has failed. If all doors, including the tailgate, have problems, the driver's door module (DDM) may have gone bad, requiring replacement.
- ABS Module: The ABS light and check engine light may come on in the V70, accompanied by a non-functioning speedometer. This issue is often caused by a faulty ABS module, which will need to be replaced.
- Upper Engine Mount: The upper engine mount in the V70 can wear out, leading to excessive engine movement and noise. Replacing the mount should resolve this issue.
- Control Arm Bushing: The control arm bushing in the V70 can wear out, causing a clunking noise when going over bumps. Replacing the bushing should fix this problem.
- Wheel Bearings: The V70 has been known to have issues with wheel bearings, particularly in parts of the North American market where inner wheels fill with mud and harden, creating vibration when driving. If you live or travel on dirt roads, this may not be the best car for you.
- Electronic Components: Many electronic components in the V70 are prone to failure, making it a money pit for some owners. If you're considering a V70, be prepared for potential issues with various sensors and electronic systems.
In summary, the 2002 Volvo V70 has several common problems, including suspension issues, diesel particulate filter blockages, transmission hard shifts, door lock failures, ABS module problems, upper engine mount wear, control arm bushing wear, wheel bearing issues, and electronic component failures. When considering a V70, it's crucial to be aware of these potential issues and factor them into your decision-making process. Regular maintenance and inspections can help identify and address these problems before they become more serious.
What is the common problem with Volvo V70?
The top engine mount is known for failing on the V70. When you are taking off, or changing gear you may hear a loud knocking noise. Another symptom of the top engine mount failing is when you open the bonnet, have someone rev the engine for you and if it shakes excessively then this is the cause.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-04-24
- VIN: YV1SW61R622
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
- Summary: In April 2021 I drove my newly acquired Volvo V70 wagon from Mississippi to my home in RI. Once I reached in and around NYC, the car began to surge forward as I applied the brakes at stop lights/signs. This became most pronounced at the GW Bridge Toll area, in high slow-moving traffic. Several times the car almost got out of control as the brakes were barely enough to stop the car from ramming into other vehicles. Cars and huge trucks were honking their horns as I broke, swerved, smoke clouds from high idling in neutral, and peeling rubber as I moved forward from standing still. I was trapped as there is no place to pull over to the sides to a breakdown lane. It eventually stopped surging but has threatened to do it in RI. I asked the mechanic about it when I had to get the car inspected. He basically said he would have to see the vehicle when it was happening. I am just funding out about Recall information and filing a report. I really want to have any necessary repairs made because the car performs well otherwise...AND I am hoping to give the car for my daughter to use as she starts her new job, but want to make sure it is safe first. I feel I would know how to handle it if it surges again (throw it in neutral, brake and pull to safe place, etc), but can't trust that she would be able to handle this emergency situation.

THERE IS A RECALL FOR THE SAME MODEL OF A DIFFERENT YEAR DESCRIBED AS "VEHICLES GOING INTO THE LIMP HOME MODE WITHOUT NEED". I TOOK IT TO A VOLVO MECHANIC AND HE FOUND NO PROBLEM, BUT HE CLEANED SOME PARTS AND CHARGED ME. IT STILL HAPPENS AND IS DANGEROUS SINCE THE CAR COULD STALL IN TRAFFIC. IT HAS HAPPENED OVER 100 TIMES. I CALLED VOLVO "SUPPORT" AND THEY SAID THEY COULD DO NOTHING SINCE THERE IS NO RECALL ON THAT MODEL. THEY OFFERED NO TECHNICAL SUPPORT WHICH I THOUGHT WAS THE LEAST THEY SHOULD DO. I WOULD LIKE TO GET IT FIXED, BUT VOLVO IS OF NO HELP. AT LEAST THEY SHOULD OFFER TECHNICAL SUPPORT EVEN IF THERE IS NO RECALL.

- VIN: YV1SW58D722
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: I WAS DRIVING AT APPROXIMATELY 6:30AM, IT WAS STILL DARK, AND MY DASHBOARD WOULD NOT DISPLAY. I WAS GOING ABOUT 35 MILES PER HOUR. I PANICKED BECAUSE IT TELLS ME ALL THE CRITICAL THINGS ABOUT THE MOVING VEHICLE. THEN ABOUT 2 MINUTES LATER IT CAME ON. THIS NON-DISPLAY OF THE DASHBOARD WOULD INTERMITTENTLY HAPPEN WHEN I DROVE THE VEHICLE OVER THE NEXT MONTH. I COULD NOT DETECT WHAT THE PROBLEM WAS. I WENT ONLINE AND OTHER VOLVO V70 OWNER HAD THE SAME PROBLEM. IT STATED THAT THE PROBLEM WAS THE DIM (DRIVE INFORMATION MODULE). THE PROBLEM EXISTS FOR YEARS 2000 TO 2009. SO I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO MY VOLVO MECHANIC. HE SAID IT WAS A COMMON PROBLEM. THE DIM WOULD HAVE TO BE REPLACED. I HAD THE MECHANIC REPLACE THE DIM BECAUSE I HAD NO CHOICE. I COULD NOT DRIVE WITHOUT A DASHBOARD. I CALLED VOLVO AND ASKED WHAT THEY WERE DOING ABOUT THE PROBLEM. THEY SAID NOTHING. BUT THEY WOULD REPORT IT TO NHTSA WITH THEIR NEXT REPORT. I PERSONALLY THINK THIS PART SHOULD BE RECALLED. I WAS SURPRISED TO HEAR IT WAS A COMMON PROBLEM AND FOR SO MANY YEARS. IT COULD CAUSE MAJOR ACCIDENTS BECAUSE YOU DON'T KNOW YOUR SPEED, IF THE VEHICLE HAS GAS OR ANY OTHER WARNINGS DISPLAYED IF THE VEHICLE HAS A PROBLEM. *TR
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2014-10-31

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2012-10-25
- VIN: YV1SW61R422
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: INSTRUMENT CLUSTER: SERVICE AIRBAG WARNING CAME ON AND STAYED ON, SHORTLY THEREAFTER CLOCK STARTED GOING BACKWARDS RAPIDLY, ALL GAUGES WENT OFF (CAME BACK WITH A SMACK TO THE DASH). FOUND OUT THERE WAS NO FAULT IN AIRBAGS BUT THE CLUSTER'S SOLDER JOINTS HAD LOOSENED. (VOLVO WENT TO LEAD-FREE SOLDER AROUND THIS TIME) VOLVO'S FIX INVOLVES REPLACING THE CLUSTER FOR $1200 FOR THE PART. I GOT A USED ONE FROM JUNKYARD AND REPLACED IT MYSELF. NOW IT'S TWO YEARS LATER AND THIS CLUSTER IS STARTING TO EXHIBIT THE CLOCK AND INTERMITTENT OUTAGES. DEFINITELY A SAFETY ISSUE AS HAVING NO GAUGES IS NOT GOOD PLUS NEEDLESSLY WORRYING ABOUT THE AIRBAG ISN'T GOOD. VOLVO REFUSES TO RECOGNIZE THIS AS A PROBLEM DESPITE IT HAPPENING MANY TIMES ACCORDING TO THE NUMBER OF POSTS ON VOLVO FORUMS I HAVE SEEN RELATING TO THE SAME ISSUE. *TR
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2014-08-13
- VIN: YV1SZ58D821
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: FIRST, I GOT A MESSAGE ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL SAYING "SRS AIRBAG URGENT." A FEW DAYS LATER, THE PANEL STARTED TO INTERMITTENTLY WORK. WHEN IT DOESN'T WORK, I HAVE NO WORKING SPEEDOMETER, FUEL GAUGE, ODOMETER, BLINKERS (ALTHOUGH THEY STILL WORK OUTSIDE THE CAR), OR ANY OTHER LIGHT THAT WOULD NORMALLY BE SHOWN ON THE PANEL. OCCASIONALLY EVERYTHING COMES ON, THEN IT FREEZES, AND EVENTUALLY TURNS BACK OFF. TOOK IT TO SHOP AND THEY TRIED A DIFFERENT PANEL BUT IT HAS TO BE CODED IN AND THE SOFTWARE WAS NOT COMPATIBLE. TOOK IT TO ANOTHER SHOP AND THEY SAID THEY COULD TRY TO SEND IT TO SOMEONE IN CANADA WHO REBUILDS THEM AND RECODES THEM SO THEY CAN BE REINSTALLED, BUT THE MECHANIC SAID TO WAIT UNTIL HE HAS MORE INFORMATION. OBVIOUSLY, THIS IS DANGEROUS FOR ME TO HAVE TO GUESS WHAT SPEED I'M GOING AND TO NOT KNOW HOW MUCH FUEL I HAVE LEFT. BOTH MECHANICS HAVE NOT SEEN THIS IN THIS MODEL BEFORE AND SEEM TO THINK IT IS A FAULTY PANEL. I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO. *NOTE: MILEAGE IS ESTIMATED SINCE I CAN NOT ACTUALLY CHECK THE ODOMETER. *TR

Quality good looking car and for the money very view can compete. Year and a half old and only a couple minor problems. Passenger side shoulder harness did not work and still has problems. It is by far the most comfortable car I have ever driven. 500 miles a day in this is OK even with my back. I would definitely buy another.

This car has surpassed my expectations! Whenever I have to rent a car, whether it is a new SUV, minivan, or luxury sedan, I am always delighted to return home to my Volvo V70. It drives smoothly, yet you can still feel the road to assist with driving decisions. It handles beautifully in all types of weather. And it has an extremely comfortable interior--especially the leather seats! I will definitely be a repeat Volvo owner!

Great high powered wagon! It has a plush ride, kick in the pants get up and go, and nice functional styling. I'm so glad I made this purchase, even though I've only driven 8500 miles so far. The only problem I've had is keeping myself from getting a speeding ticket!
