The Volvo V70 is an executive car manufactured and marketed by Volvo Cars from 1996 to 2016 across three generations. The name V70 combines the letter V, standing for versatility, and 70, denoting relative platform size (i.e., a V70 is larger than a V40, but smaller than a V90).

The first generation (1996–2000) debuted in November 1996. It was based on the P80 platform and was available with front and all-wheel drive (AWD), the latter marketed as the V70 AWD. In September 1997, a crossover version called the V70 XC or V70 Cross Country was introduced. The sedan model was called Volvo S70.

The second generation (2000–2007) debuted in spring 2000. It was based on the P2 platform and, as with its predecessor, was also offered as an all-wheel drive variant marketed as the V70 AWD and as a crossover version initially called V70 XC. For the 2003 model year, the crossover was renamed to XC70. The sedan model was called Volvo S60.

The third generation (2007–2016) debuted in February 2007. It was based on the P3 platform and marketed as the V70 and the XC70. Production of the V70 ended on 25 April 2016, the XC70 continued until 13 May 2016. The sedan model was called Volvo S80.

BUT THIS IS A SAFTY ISSUE AT THIS POINT THERE ARE SO MANY COMPLAINTS AND I WANT TO KNOW WHY NOTHING IS BEING DONE AFTER ALL THESE YEARS ? I WANT A REBUILT OR NEW SAFE TRANSMISSION INSTALLED AT THE COST OF VOLVO FOR NOT FIXING THE ONGOING PROBLEMS THEY KNEW ABOUT BACK IN 2001 AND THERE COMPLETE WRONG MAINTENANCE ON THE TRANSMISSION STATING NOT TO CHANGE THE FLUID UNTIL 90K. I BELIEVE THE NHTSA HAS MANY COMPLAINTS IN REFRANCE TO THIS SAME ISSUE WHY IS NOTHING BEING DONE ?

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2014-04-02
  • VIN: YV1SW53D511
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: I NOTICED THE TAIL LIGHT BRAKE BULBS WERE BURNING OUT QUICKLY. AFTER GETTING A TICKET I STOPPED DRIVING IT UNTIL I COULD DETERMINE THE CAUSE. VOLVO LISTS A BRAKE RELAY RECALL. BRAKE LIGHT FUSES AND RELAYS ARE IN 4 LOCATIONS IN THE CAR. THEY ARE: 1. UNDER THE HOOD IN THE ENGINE CONTROL UNIT ECU, 2.THE PASSENGER COMPARTMENT A. CENTRAL CONTROL UNIT CCU AND B. FUSE PANEL BY DRIVERS SIDE DOOR POST 3. REAR CONTROL UNIT IN THE CARGO COMPARTMENT. THE PROBLEM WAS AN ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING DESIGN WHERE A STEEL RACE THAT SURROUNDS THE TAILLIGHT BULBS TRANSFERS THE ELECTRICAL CURRENT IS DESIGNED TO FAIL. AS THE BULB HEATS UP IT TRANSFERS THE HEAT TO THE PLATE AND PLASTIC PINS THAT HOLD IT IN PLACE UNDER PRESSURE FROM THE SPRING STEEL PARTS OF THE REMOVABLE BULB SOCKET UNIT. AS THE PLASTIC PINS WEAKEN AND MOVE AWAY UNDER PRESSURE AND HEAT FROM THE BULB SOCKET SPRING STEEL KEEPERS, AND CONDUCTORS OF VOLTAGE AND CURRENT, THE CURRENT IS THROTTLED DOWN TO A PIN POINT AS THE PLATE MOVES AWAY FROM THE BULB CREATING MORE HEAT AND ARCING TO MELT THE STEEL RACE SURROUND THE BULBS THAT SUPPLY THE CURRENT. THE REPLACED BULBS SEEM TO WORK FOR A SHORT TIME AS THE CONNECTION IS REESTABLISHED WHEN THE BULB SOCKET IS REMOVED AND REPLACED, AND THE CONNECTION IS REESTABLISHED FOR A TIME, BUT IT WILL SOON OVER HEAT AND FAIL FROM THE WEAKENED AND MELTED PLASTIC LENS. BRAKE LIGHT FAILURE RESULTS NOT FROM A FAILED PART, RELAY, FUSE OR WIRE, BUT FROM AN ENGINEERING DESIGN FLAW THAT WAS RECOGNIZED AND ELIMINATED IN THE 2005 MODELS. FORD AND VOLVO NEVER MENTION THIS. A RECALL COULD AMOUNT TO SIX HUNDRED TO A THOUSAND DOLLARS PER CAR FOR THE 4 LENSES WITH LABOR. THE ARCING IN THE WIRING MAY ALSO CAUSE OTHER COMPUTER FAILURES AS THE TRANSMISSION ALSO HAS AN ELECTRICAL PROBLEM IN THE KICKDOWN PROCESS THAT CAUSES AN ABNORMAL DELAY IN NEUTRAL GEAR AND HARD ENGAGEMENT OF THE LOWER GEAR. *TR

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2014-05-12
  • VIN: YV1SW53D511
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: THE IGNITION IS SHUT OFF MOMENTARILY AS THE TRANSMISSION ATTEMPTS TO DOWNSHIFT CAUSING IT TO SLIP INTO NEUTRAL THEN ENGAGE THE LOWER GEAR HARD AS THE TRANSMISSIONS COMPUTER REESTABLISHES CONTROL. THIS ACTION IS RECORDED ON A VIDEO CAR CAMERA OPERATED BY THE IGNITIONS ON AND OFF POSITION. THE HARD SHIFTING PROBLEM THOUGHT TO BE FIXED BY SOFTWARE UPDATE MAY BE ADDRESSING THE SYMPTOM NOT THE CAUSE. ACCELERATION IS ALSO AFFECTED AT OTHER TIMES WHERE THE FOOT PEDAL IS INOPERABLE, BUT REESTABLISHED WHEN SHUTTING THE IGNITION OFF AND ON. THE DRIVE TRAIN BECOMES WOBBLY AFTER A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS MAKING TRAVEL BETWEEN CITIES UNSAFE. A CLUNKING SOUND FROM THE REAR, AS BROKEN SPRING OR LOOSE BOWLING BALL MAKES, IS HEARD AT TIMES OF MILD ACCELERATION AT LOWER SPEEDS. PERHAPS A GROUNDING STRAP MY ALLEVIATE STATIC BUILDUP IN THE IGNITION SYSTEM. *JS

Negative 2001 Volvo V70 car reviews

  1. Golden Beier 2024-08-15

Is this a Volvo? This is actually my fourth one, and unfortunately, it will be my last. It's a shame that what used to be a great Swedish product is no longer reliable. However, I must say that the styling is nice and it handles great on the interstate while also being fuel-efficient. The problems started to arise at around 120K miles, and it seems like every electronic and fuel injection component, even the seatbelts, started to malfunction. The cost of repairs was in the thousands, and unfortunately, Bosch doesn't make reasonably priced replacement parts. For my next car, I'm considering American or Japanese brands, which are known for their reliability and affordability.

Although my experience with the 2001 V70XC has been challenging, I have gained a lot of knowledge about car maintenance and repair. I have had to replace many parts, including the engine and transmission, and have dealt with severe transmission problems, stalling, and overheating. Despite these issues, the car has always managed to get me home, and for that, I am grateful. However, I have decided to cut my losses and move on. It is important to note that Volvo cars can be expensive to maintain, and it is crucial to find a reliable repair shop. While my model was made in Sweden, I have heard that newer models have improved significantly. It is always important to do thorough research before making a car purchase.

Although the transition from my 1989 240 wagon to a new wagon was disappointing, I have come to appreciate the safety features of my new vehicle. While it may have less cargo space and be shorter in height, the integrated child booster seats are a great addition. I have encountered some issues with the electronics in the passenger side door and the cup holders in the rear seat, but overall, I have found the vehicle to be reliable. While the driver side inside handle may require an expensive fix, I am confident in the quality of my new wagon. I look forward to many more years of safe and enjoyable driving.

We previously owned a 1998 S70 and enjoyed it so much that we decided to 'upgrade' to a 2001 V70 T5. Unfortunately, we have not had the same positive experience with this car. The adaptive transmission does not always react as expected, which can be frustrating. For example, when coming to a stop, the transmission shifts to neutral as a fuel-saving feature. However, when you are ready to move again, there can be a delay as the car shifts back into gear. Despite having the dealership reprogram the transmission three times, the issue has not been resolved. Additionally, there have been instances where pressing the accelerator has not resulted in immediate acceleration, which can be concerning. When we reached out to Volvo customer service, we did not feel heard or understood. While we have had a negative experience with this particular Volvo, we remain open to considering other models in the future.

It sounds like you've had a tough time with your car. It's frustrating when things keep breaking down and needing repairs. You've spent a lot of money on mechanical repairs over the last 6 years, and it seems like there's always something else that needs fixing. On top of that, you've had issues with the glove compartment, door locks and windows, drive shaft panel, side view mirror adjuster, speakers, back hatch locking system, and vent panel for defrost. That's a lot to deal with! I hope things start looking up for you and your car soon.

Positive 2001 Volvo V70 car reviews

  1. Tad Anderson 2025-01-08

I absolutely adore my V70 2.4 Turbo! The clever packaging, stylish looks, great handling, and fun-to-drive factor make it an absolute joy to own. And let's not forget that I'm not embarrassed to drive a wagon, since it looks sporty and more upscale than most grocery getters. In terms of reliability, it's been running great at 131K, with some minor issues along the way. Of course, it's not a Honda or Toyota, but my Benz that cost twice as much has had twice the issues, and my new BMW has been in the shop more than not. Like my V70, it's a first-year production model. If you prioritize reliability over form, fun, and function, then perhaps a Japanese car is the way to go. However, with proper maintenance, these cars can last forever, albeit not without faults. Swede love!

Your 2001 V70xc sounds like an amazing car! I'm impressed by how well it has held up despite the rough roads in Michigan. It's great to hear that it performed better than your Outback in the snow. Although maintenance can be expensive, it's worth it to have a car you can trust, especially with a mechanic you trust. You've done an excellent job taking care of it with all the maintenance you've done. I'm glad to hear that it has the most comfortable seats for long journeys. It's sad to hear that the head gasket finally went at 254,000 miles, but it's great that it was bought by a mechanic who can turn it into a monster truck. Thank you for sharing your experience with your Volvo, it's been a pleasure to read!

  3. Tevin Schneider 2024-11-27

The V70 2.4T is a great car that offers plenty of space for families. It's a sports sedan that is perfect for those who want a little extra room. The turbocharged inline 5 engine is one of the smoothest and most responsive I've ever driven. Volvo has done an excellent job with the handling, making it crisp and without excessive body roll or sag. The ride is also fantastic, even on the potholed streets of Chicago.

  4. Sim Blick 2024-11-05

Have owned this since new. I enjoy the comfort of the ride and the saftey features. The car has never broken down on me. I travel cross country alone and even camp in it. It's solid. I have had to replace the top motor mount, mass air flow, lots of headlight and tail light bulbs, the electronic throttle and the temp sensor for the heater. But the car has 150,000 miles on it. The motor doesn't use a drop of oil. I have used Mobile 1 in it since break in. The car is amazing on icy and snow packed roads. I often say I love the car and have kept it longer than my cars in the past. But repairs are expensive and I hate the dealership. With no other dealership close, I would not buy another one.
