2005 Volvo V70 problems

volvo logo

The Volvo V70 is an executive car manufactured and marketed by Volvo Cars from 1996 to 2016 across three generations. The name V70 combines the letter V, standing for versatility, and 70, denoting relative platform size (i.e., a V70 is larger than a V40, but smaller than a V90).

The first generation (1996–2000) debuted in November 1996. It was based on the P80 platform and was available with front and all-wheel drive (AWD), the latter marketed as the V70 AWD. In September 1997, a crossover version called the V70 XC or V70 Cross Country was introduced. The sedan model was called Volvo S70.

The second generation (2000–2007) debuted in spring 2000. It was based on the P2 platform and, as with its predecessor, was also offered as an all-wheel drive variant marketed as the V70 AWD and as a crossover version initially called V70 XC. For the 2003 model year, the crossover was renamed to XC70. The sedan model was called Volvo S60.

The third generation (2007–2016) debuted in February 2007. It was based on the P3 platform and marketed as the V70 and the XC70. Production of the V70 ended on 25 April 2016, the XC70 continued until 13 May 2016. The sedan model was called Volvo S80.

Common 2005 Volvo V70 problems

The Volvo V70, produced from 1996 to 2007, is a popular choice for those seeking a reliable and stylish estate vehicle. However, like any vehicle, the Volvo V70 is not immune to certain issues and problems. This article will discuss the most common problems reported by Volvo V70 owners, based on the search results provided.

  • Locking Mechanism Problems: The central locking system is another area where V70 owners have reported issues. Particular attention should be paid to the tailgate lock, which has a reputation for sticking. If this fault is encountered, it may require an expensive re-wiring job.
  • Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF): The DPF is a device designed to remove diesel particulate matter or soot from the exhaust gas of a diesel engine. Volvo recommends replacing the DPF every 75,000 miles. If the car repeatedly stalls and idles badly, it could indicate a DPF blockage, which would require replacement.
  • Turbo Problems: If a whine is heard from the front of the car during low-speed driving with moderate acceleration, it could indicate a large degree of wear in the turbo, which may require replacement in the near future.
  • All-Wheel Drive (AWD) System: V70s with AWD are known to have a problem with the cam belt, which requires regular replacement. If this is not completed, it could cause significant problems within the engine, including total failure. It is essential to check the service history for recent changes or factor in the cost of replacement if the car is purchased without a recent change.
  • Transmission Issues: V70 owners have reported transmission problems, including erratic shifting or loss of transmission operation. These issues can be costly to repair and may require a transmission fluid flush or full reprogramming at a service centre.
  • Air Conditioning/Climate Control: While not a significant issue, it is essential to test the air conditioning/climate control system to ensure it is functioning correctly, as some V70 owners have reported problems with this system.

In conclusion, while the Volvo V70 is a reliable and stylish estate vehicle, it is not immune to certain problems and issues. Potential buyers should be aware of these common faults and check for them during the purchasing process. Regular maintenance and servicing can help prevent many of these issues, ensuring the longevity and reliability of the vehicle.

What is the common problem with Volvo V70?

The top engine mount is known for failing on the V70. When you are taking off, or changing gear you may hear a loud knocking noise. Another symptom of the top engine mount failing is when you open the bonnet, have someone rev the engine for you and if it shakes excessively then this is the cause.

What is the best year of Volvo V70 to buy?

Going back to the 2000-2007 era still makes sense. This V70 still looks great and can have kiddie- friendly rear seats in the boot, but mostly it's a proper load-lugger, with its posh carpeted cargo bay. Note that it got something of a revamp in 2004.

What is the life expectancy of a Volvo V70?

That being said, Volvo Cars is among the top brands when it comes to longevity. Among the factors mentioned above, regular maintenance and driving style can make a huge difference. Overall, expect to see your Volvo vehicle last for over 200,000 miles if you give it proper care each year.

What is the recall on the 2005 Volvo V70?

Volvo is recalling 194,546 V70 and XC70 wagons from the 2001 through 2007 model years because a part in the driver's-side airbag might rupture and launch metal fragments toward occupants if the airbag deploys.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2005-09-21
  • VIN: YV1SW58D611
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: SINCE MID JULY, 05 CAR HAS HAD AN INTERMITTENT STALLING PROBLEM. WHEN YOU STOP, AFTER THE CAR IS AT OPERATING TEMP. IT WILL SEEK IDLE, RUN UP TO ABOUT 1,000 RPM & EITHER DROP TO BELOW 500 RPM OR STALL OUT. IT DOES THIS ON SEVERAL MAKES OF PREMIUM GAS, MOBIL, SHELL, TEXICO/AMACO, AND OR MARATHON. IT WILL RESTART EASILY AND THEN DOES NOT LOSE IDLE AGAIN FOR SOME TIME. I HAD IT CHECKED BY DEALERSHIP, AND THEY FIND THE MASS AIR SENSOR AND THROTTLE MODULE ARE BAD. COST TO CURE IS $1,500. I DO NOT THINK A CAR WITH 64K MILES SHOULD NEED THIS TYPE OF EXPENSE. I THINK A CAR THAT STALLS IN TRAFFIC WITHOUT ANY WARNING IS A HAZARD. I HAVE CONTACTED VOLVO, AND THEY ARE SORRY BUT CAN DO NOTHING ABOUT IT AT THIS TIME. THEY ARE REPLACING OR MAKING ADJUSTMENT TO COST IN SWEDEN AT THIS TIME PER "BRICKBOARD" THE VOLVO WEB SITE ON THROTTLE MODULES. I HAVE ASKED FOR ORIGINAL PARTS, AND WILL SAVE THEM. *NM

  • Summary: MY CAR IS A 2005 VOLVO V70R PURCHASED NEW IN JULY 2005. THREE WEEKS AGO, WITH NO WARNING, THE CAR SUDDENLY LOST POWER, BUT KEPT RUNNING WITH GREAT HESITATION (I WAS DRIVING AT ONLY 30 MPH AT THE TIME). TOWED TO DEALER AND THROTTLE SENSOR REPLACED UNDER WARRANTY. YESTERDAY (9/15), THE SAME THING HAPPENED AGAIN, AFTER ONLY ABOUT 250 MILES OF DRIVING. CAR WAS TOWED TO DEALER AGAIN AM I AWAITING WORD. IN BOTH CASES AN ERROR MESSAGE "DECREASED ENGINE PERFORMANCE" WAS DISPLAYED. THERE WAS NO ADVANCE WARNING. IN BOTH CASES, I WAS DRIVING AT ABOUT 30 MPH ON A SECONDARY ROAD. THESE 2 INSTANCES HAVE CAUSED ME TO LOSE CONFIDENCE IN THE CAR, ESPECIALLY TO DRIVE ON HIGHWAY.*JB

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2005-07-06
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: WE PURCHASED A 2005 VOLVO V70 NEW. WE HAVE TAKEN THE CAR BACK TO THE DEALER 3 TIMES BECAUSE THE PASSANGER AIRBAG DEACTIVATES WHEN AN ADULT IN THE SEAT SEEMS TO MOVE AROUND . THE FIRST TIME THE DEALEAR RECALIBRATED THE COMPUTER. THE SECOND TIME THEY CHANGED THE SEAT. THE THIRD TIME THEY HAD A FIELD REP DRIVE THE CAR WITH AN ADULT IN THE SEAT, WHILE THE LIGHT DID COME ON THE REP SAID THAT IT WAS OPERATING NORMAL. I WOULD LIKE TO FIND OUT IF THIS IS NORMAL AND IF IT IS TO RAISE A CONCERN FOR THE SAFETY OF THE PASANGER.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2005-05-31
  • VIN: YV1LZ56D8Y2
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: THE VEHICLE IS A 2000 VOLVO AWD CROSS COUNTRY. THE CAR WHILE AT HIGHWAY SPEED DECELERATED ABRUPTLY AND NEARLY CAUSED A REAR END IMPACT ON THE BACK OF MY CAR. THIS ALSO HAPPENED EARLIER ON A VACATION TRIP IN MAY 2005. I WAS TOLD BY A FRIEND AND THE DEALERSHIP THAT SOLD US THE CAR TO US (NEW) THAT THERE WAS A CLASS ACTION SUIT FOR THE REASONS CAUSING OUR PROBLEM REGARDING THE ATC COMPUTER /THROTTLE CONTROL. HAVING SPENT OVER 1500 DOLLARS FOR THE REPAIR IT APPEARS THAT THE DEALER WILL NOT REIMBURSE US FOR THE RECALL COSTS AND ALSO DID NOT INDICATE OR ASSURE US THAT THE CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM WOULD BE TAKEN CARE OF BY THE REPAIR. THE CAR PROBLEMS WE EXPERIENCED WHERE DESCRIBED IN AN ISSUE OF VOLVO CLUB MAGAZINE. *NM

Negative 2005 Volvo V70 car reviews

  1. Nico Harber 2024-11-18

Hi there! I recently purchased a 05 V70R after having to part ways with my 2004 S60R. Unfortunately, I experienced some issues with the car's front suspension and headlights right after leaving the dealership. The suspension was making a clunking and squeaking noise, and the headlights were pointed straight down, making night driving difficult. I took the car back to the dealer, and they were able to fix the suspension issue, but the headlights were still not properly aimed. Despite having to take the car to the service department twice in the first three days of ownership, I'm hopeful that these issues will be resolved soon. Thanks for listening!

Positive 2005 Volvo V70 car reviews

  1. Matt Lubowitz 2024-10-28

After trading in your 1998 V70 T5 with 140,000 miles on the odometer, you made a great choice by purchasing a 2005 V70R. The performance and handling of this car are simply phenomenal, allowing you to drive at speeds and under conditions normally reserved for high-end sportscars. The build quality is excellent and all controls, switches and gauges are logical and functional.

  2. Harmon Deckow 2024-10-19

My V70 is actually a non-turbo automatic. I get 30 miles per gallon on the highway and 20 miles per gallon in the city. This car is excellent! When you start it up, it revs to 2,000 RPM and within a few seconds drops to around 700 +/-. The dealer said it should be that way. I had a 98 V70 XC before and only had minor issues. I traded down this time to the V70 because of its price and looks. I bought it for safety, the best seats in the market place, heated seats, dual air controls, and its highly rated reliability in consumer reports. It holds the road nicely. By the way, my wife was hit in the back by a big pick-up truck. The truck's front and radiator were smashed, and it had to be towed. Thankfully, my wife was not injured and was able to drive the car home. There was no glass breakage, and the bumpers & shock system did their job.

  3. Harley Durgan 2024-09-14

The V70R (2001 - 2005) is an AWD Wonder Wagon that Volvo built to perfection. I have been driving my 2005 model for fourteen years now, and it has only gotten better and faster with time. With the original factory speed tuning and aftermarket upgrades (see iPd), you can easily achieve power well north of 350 hp and fat torque throughout the powerband. The dashboard's 'advanced' mode not only changes the suspension but also the throttle and brake response, which can startle passengers if not warned in advance. The center of gravity is very low, and the only issue is a relatively wide turning radius due to overwidth wheels to support fat, grippy rubber. If you can keep your foot light, the mileage is quite reasonable. If you choose to drive aggressively, it's a monster. The roof rails handle bikes, canoes, or cargo boxes with ease, and the enormous cargo volume with the rear seats down is impressive. Monsters are good, and this one ROARS. If you can find one, I highly recommend buying it. However, mine's not for sale.

  4. Mackenzie Waelchi 2024-09-08

Congratulations on your first Volvo for your family! After an extensive search, you landed on the Volvo V70 non-turbo, specifically for its great gas mileage and not having to use 93 octane. With about 400 miles to a tank, you can go a long time between fill-ups. The stadium seating is perfect for a car seat to see out the window, which is great for your baby. While your husband, who is 6', has some difficulty getting comfortable in the driver's position (the S40 you had for a loaner was roomier, he said), you have been very comfortable driving it and it has nice pickup. Although it may not be as easy to handle as your previous VW Golf, it is still a good car for anti-SUV people. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!

  5. Domenick Hilpert 2024-09-03

If you're looking for a comfortable daily driver and a safe family vehicle that provides excellent handling and stability in all conditions, while also outperforming your neighbor's Porsche, then this is the car for you...
