2000 Volvo V70 problems

volvo logo

The Volvo V70 is an executive car manufactured and marketed by Volvo Cars from 1996 to 2016 across three generations. The name V70 combines the letter V, standing for versatility, and 70, denoting relative platform size (i.e., a V70 is larger than a V40, but smaller than a V90).

The first generation (1996–2000) debuted in November 1996. It was based on the P80 platform and was available with front and all-wheel drive (AWD), the latter marketed as the V70 AWD. In September 1997, a crossover version called the V70 XC or V70 Cross Country was introduced. The sedan model was called Volvo S70.

The second generation (2000–2007) debuted in spring 2000. It was based on the P2 platform and, as with its predecessor, was also offered as an all-wheel drive variant marketed as the V70 AWD and as a crossover version initially called V70 XC. For the 2003 model year, the crossover was renamed to XC70. The sedan model was called Volvo S60.

The third generation (2007–2016) debuted in February 2007. It was based on the P3 platform and marketed as the V70 and the XC70. Production of the V70 ended on 25 April 2016, the XC70 continued until 13 May 2016. The sedan model was called Volvo S80.

Common 2000 Volvo V70 problems

The 2000 Volvo V70 is known for several common problems that car owners have reported. One of the most common issues is the failure of the upper engine mount, also called the upper engine stabilizer. This mount helps control engine movement during acceleration and shifting gears. However, it often fails in as little as 10,000 miles, leading to an alarming knock when accelerating or shifting gears. Volvo has introduced improved designs, but the problem persists even in newer models.

Another common problem is the failure of anti-sway bar end links with ball joint connections, which are short-lived in the Volvo application. These links can begin knocking and clunking in as little as 10,000 miles, and if left unattended, they can break and disconnect the anti-sway bar from the chassis, resulting in poor handling response and random clunks and knocks.

The odometer and trip meter functions on all 1993-1997 850 models can fail due to a small plastic gear that drives these functions, which is prone to cracking as it ages. This can result in intermittent or complete loss of odometer/trip meter function. Since Volvo does not sell the gear or the speedometer as a separate part, the repair can easily cost over $1000 at a dealer.

The crankcase vent system in all 1993-2000 850, S70, C70, and V70 models (as well as most 2001-2007 S60, S80, V70, and XC 90 models) can clog up with oil deposits, leading to crankcase pressure build-up and oil leaks around the engine. This system uses many small vacuum lines that can become brittle and crack, causing idle and drivability issues.

Front strut mount failure is also a common problem in all 1993-2000 850, S70, C70, and V70 models (as well as most 2001-2008 S60, S80, V70, and XC 90 models). This failure can lead to a clunking noise from the front suspension and a rough ride.

In addition to these common problems, the 2000 Volvo V70 can also suffer from front suspension problems, exhaust heat shields working themselves loose, and diesel engines having problems with the fuel injection system. If the engine is reluctant to start or produces lots of black smoke when it does start, it may be best to look elsewhere.

It is important to note that these are common problems but may not be present in all 2000 Volvo V70 models. When buying a used Volvo V70, it is recommended to have the car checked out by a professional, especially if you intend to carry a lot of cargo or tow a trailer. Additionally, high mileage T5 and R models and diesel engines can be hard on their brake pads, so it is essential to check the necessary work has been done before purchasing the car.

What is the common problem with Volvo V70?

The top engine mount is known for failing on the V70. When you are taking off, or changing gear you may hear a loud knocking noise. Another symptom of the top engine mount failing is when you open the bonnet, have someone rev the engine for you and if it shakes excessively then this is the cause.

What is the best year of Volvo V70 to buy?

Going back to the 2000-2007 era still makes sense. This V70 still looks great and can have kiddie- friendly rear seats in the boot, but mostly it's a proper load-lugger, with its posh carpeted cargo bay. Note that it got something of a revamp in 2004.

What is the life expectancy of a Volvo V70?

That being said, Volvo Cars is among the top brands when it comes to longevity. Among the factors mentioned above, regular maintenance and driving style can make a huge difference. Overall, expect to see your Volvo vehicle last for over 200,000 miles if you give it proper care each year.

How long will a 2001 Volvo V70 last?

That being said, with the proper care the average lifespan of a Volvo is typically 20 years with over 200,000 miles.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2013-10-01
  • VIN: YV1LW61J7Y2
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE
  • Summary: MY VOLVO V70 HAS BEEN DYING IMMEDIATELY AFTER STARTING THE ENGINE AND HAS PROGRESSIVELY GOTTEN WORSE OVER THE LAST 6 MONTHS. HAVE HAD TWO TRIPS TO A MECHANIC WHO REPAIRED A FEW PARTS, BUT IT DIDN'T FIX IT. PROBLEM CONTINUES. RECENTLY, WE WERE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY AT ABOUT 65 MPH AND THE CAR SPEED DROPPED TO ABOUT 20 MPH AND COULDN'T GO ANY FASTER AND WE HAD TO PULL OVER. THIS IS A MAJOR SAFETY RISK. NOW THE CAR STARTS AND IMMEDIATELY DIES FOR ABOUT 4-5 TIMES BEFORE IT WILL START AND CONTINUE RUNNING. THERE IS A WHIRRING NOISE COMING FROM THE ELECTRONIC THROTTLE WHEN IT DIES IMMEDIATELY. I TOOK IT TO A VOLVO DEALER AND THEY SAID A RECALL FOR A SOFTWARE UPDATE WAS PERFORMED ON MY CAR IN 2006 TO LOWER THE WEAR INSIDE THE THROTTLE. THEN VOLVO ISSUED A SERVICE CAMPAIGN FOR THE ETM WHEN IT FAILS, BUT THE CAMPAIGN LASTED UNTIL 200,000 MILES OR 10 YEARS. SO EVEN THOUGH THE CAR HAS ONLY 94K MILES AND THE RECALL SOFTWARE WAS INSTALLED ONLY 25K MILES AGO, VOLVO WON'T REPLACE A CRITICAL PART TO THE SAFE OPERATION OF THE VEHICLE BECAUSE THE 10 YEARS HAVE PASSED. SO THE DEALER AND VOLVO REFUSED TO REPLACE THIS PART EVEN THOUGH THE ETM ALREADY HAD A RECALL AND SERVICE CAMPAIGN IN THE PAST. 2 ACTIONS TO ADDRESS A DEFECTIVE PART, BUT VOLVO DIDN'T FIX THE PROBLEM AND I HAVE A BAD PART IN MY VOLVO THAT IS UNSAFE. *JS

IT BEGAN UNFORTUNATELY WITH THE SAME SYMPTOMS I PREVIOUSLY WAS EXPERIENCING. I CALLED THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT WHERE I APPARENTLY HAD MY CAR SERVICED FOR REPAIR AND WAS TOLD BY THE MANAGER THAT I WOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR ANOTHER DIAGNOSIS, AND THAT IT WAS PROBABLY SOMETHING ELSE, SINCE THE RECALL SERVICE WAS DONE I DECIDED TO CALL THE: VOLVOCARS.US TELEPHONE #, @ 1-800-458-1552. I THOUGHT FOR SURE, I WOULD RECEIVE THE SUPPORT I NEEDED . I DID NOT. I WAS TOLD ONCE AGAIN, I WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE REPAIR. • Summary: I OWN A 2000 VOLVO V70 WITH 130K MILES AND THE CAR INTERMITTENTLY CUTS OFF WITHOUT WARNING AND/OR IT HAS DIFFICULTY STARTING. THIS OCCURS SEVERAL TIMES A WEEK. THERE ARE ALSO TIMES WHEN I TRY TO START THE CAR, IT DOES NOT HAVE ENOUGH POWER TO MOVE FORWARD, SPITS SPUTTERS, AND THEN CUTS OFF. THE LOCAL DEALERSHIP, VOLVO OF CHARLOTTE, NC SAID IT WAS THE ELECTRONIC THROTTLE SYSTEM (ETS) AND THAT MY RECALL/REPLACEMENT WARRANTY RAN OUT IN FEBRUARY 2010. AFTER NOTIFICATION OF A PROBLEM EXISTING IN 2006/2007, I COMPLIED WITH THE RECALL AND THE SOFTWARE UPGRADED SHORTLY AFTER THE 2006 RECALL NOTICE WAS RECEIVED, BUT NOW VOLVO WILL NOT HONOR THE ISSUE WITH THE FAULTY SOFTWARE UPGRADE OR REPLACE THE ETS MODULE. WHEN I CONTACTED VOLVO USA, THE REPRESENTATIVE SAID THEY HAVE CUSTOMERS EVERY DAY THAT ARE BEYOND THE 200,000 MILE OR 10-YR IN SERVICE DATE, AND THEY WON'T HELP. FOR ME TO REPLACE THE MODULE WILL COST MORE THAN $1,000. IF THE SOFTWARE AND MODULE ARE FAULTY, SHOULD THEY BE RESPONSIBLE FOR REPLACING THE UNITS SINCE THEY ADMIT TO MANUFACTURING THE CAR WITH THE FAULTY COMPONENT? CLEANING THE MODULE DOES NOT WORK. *TR

Negative 2000 Volvo V70 car reviews

This car has had several issues since the beginning, but unfortunately, the dealer was unable to fix them during the first visit. The cup holder was broken, and there were frequent electrical problems. Additionally, the car had trouble starting from the first day, and despite multiple attempts, the dealer was unable to fix it. The transmission also had issues with clunking down-shifting, which proved difficult to repair. The rear hatch panel broke off, and although it cost $170 to fix, it detached again a month later. When I brought this to the dealer's attention, they suggested that I was slamming it too hard. The ECS light also came on, and the car felt like it was going to stall. I later discovered that this issue was covered under a class action lawsuit, which the dealer failed to inform me about. They also recommended that I replace $3,000 worth of parts before resolving the issue.

Based on my personal experience, I strongly advise against purchasing this car. In the last year alone (2007), I had to pay over $7,000 in repair bills, and the total cost of repairs has exceeded $18,000. The car has had multiple issues, including electrical problems, ABS module failure, brake issues, transmission problems, and more. The rear hatch panel keeps coming loose, and now the rear hatch won't lock. Unfortunately, this car has been a constant source of frustration and has required frequent visits to the repair shop. In my opinion, this is the worst car I have ever owned.

  3. Lexus Glover 2024-10-03

Our car experienced some issues with the head gasket and AWD box, which required a repair cost of $3,100.00. We had to take it to the nearest Volvo dealership, which was 90 miles away, as none of the local import mechanics could fix the head gasket. Unfortunately, we have been informed that repairs for this car can be quite expensive, ranging from $1,500.00 to $2,500.00. Despite this, we have made the confident decision to trade in the car as soon as we get it back. Thank you for your understanding.

This is the first European car I have owned after having one Honda and three Nissans. Unfortunately, my experience with this car has led me back to Japanese cars. I purchased the car when it was one year old with 13,000 miles and while it has good safety features, design, and options, the terrible mechanical failures have far outweighed the positives. These failures included the steering, electronic throttle control systems, master brake cylinder, driver's seat belt, front brake rotors, and front passenger electric window switch. The repair costs have exceeded $3,000 and I have never owned a car that experienced major failures of critical drive train components. To add to my disappointment, the car now has several rattles. Based on my experience, I would not recommend Volvo to anyone.

I purchased this car back in January 2009 when it had just over 100K miles on it. While I initially ignored Consumer Reports and some negative reviews on this site, I am now paying the price. Unfortunately, in just two months, I have had to spend over $2000 on repairs. Recently, the check engine light came on and the codes indicated issues with the oxygen sensor and catalytic converter. The interior is quite noisy and cheap, with a lot of squeaks and rattles. I also had an issue with the alternator, which cost me $700 to fix and left me stranded on the highway. The mechanic also identified a vibration in the engine and a drivetrain issue. I would advise staying away from the '98-'00 XC models, despite their great look and feel, as there is a high chance that they will cost you a lot to keep running. I was hoping to be one of the lucky few, but unfortunately, that was not the case.

Positive 2000 Volvo V70 car reviews

  1. Casimer Rutherford 2025-01-03

The car is fantastic! It's well-appointed with heated seats and a retractable sunroof. The 2.4L motor with turbo is a great feature that makes the fuel economy soar. I travel many highway miles and the car hugs the road, making it a very good purchase. The maintenance is affordable and fits into the domestic price league, making Costco oil changes and lubes for $35 a perfect choice for budget-minded car owners. The AWD was ample in the recent snow with all-season tires. Overall, it's a very good car that's fun to drive and safe for the kids.

  2. Jarrett Romaguera 2024-11-14

Our vehicle is perfect for families with kids, offering great seats and a smooth ride that makes long journeys a breeze. The large windows provide excellent visibility, making it easy to drive safely. Additionally, our vehicle has a reputation for being overlooked by law enforcement, but we always encourage our customers to drive responsibly and within the speed limit.

My friends call this car 'the limo'. You're going to love riding in it! Sit in the back to see why this car is so special.

  4. Columbus Konopelski 2024-10-01

I purchased this car used with 89,000 miles on it. I have been thoroughly impressed with this car! It handles exceptionally well, especially for a wagon. It gets the same gas mileage as my old 4 cylinder Honda Accord and has exceptional power (0-60 under 9 seconds) for a 2.5 litre, non-turbo car with automatic transmission. Moreover, it has been completely reliable in my 30,000 miles of ownership (and I drive a lot :)). My only minor complaint is the front cupholder, which appears to be a toy out of a McDonald's Happy Meal. Also, I may consider a Turbo next time around since I do a fair amount of high altitude mountain driving. Although very peppy in normal driving, the engine does get short of breath past 4500 ft altitude.

  5. Rogers Fisher 2024-07-03

The sport wagon title has certainly lived up to its name. It has a very solid feel and the 5 cylinder motor sings like a sewing machine with plenty of power.
