1999 Dodge Avenger problems

dodge logo

The Dodge Avenger is a front-wheel drive, mid-sized sedan that was marketed by Dodge. The Avenger made its North American debut in 1994 for the 1995 model year as a coupe that was produced until 2000. The model name was reintroduced to the market as a four-door sports sedan starting in 2007 for the 2008 model year. The Dodge Avenger name had earlier been used on South African market Hillman Avengers in 1975 and 1976.

The 2014 model year marked the end of Avenger production as the mid-sized models for both the Dodge and Chrysler brands were consolidated into the new Chrysler 200 introduced for the 2015 model year while Dodge received the new compact Dart.

Nameplate history

The first use of the Dodge Avenger name was on a badge engineered version of the European Hillman Avenger, exclusive to South Africa. The same car was sold in North America as the Plymouth Cricket between 1972 and 1974. In place of the Hillman engines, this version used a Peugeot 1.6 litre engine (as also installed in locally assembled Peugeot 404s) in order to satisfy local content requirements. The Dodge-branded Avenger was introduced in 1975 and was then renamed Chrysler in 1976. This generation has nothing in common with later Dodge Avengers. After Chrysler ZA was merged into Sigma in 1976, the Avenger was soon cancelled to allow Sigma to free up more production capacity for the Mazda 323.

Common 1999 Dodge Avenger problems

The 1999 Dodge Avenger, part of the first generation of this model, is known for several common problems that owners have reported. These issues include:

  • Broken Door Handle: In the 1999 Avenger, there have been three complaints about the door handle being broken. This can be an inconvenience and may require replacement of the handle.
  • Transmission Failure: In the 1996 Avenger, there have been two complaints about transmission failure. This can be a significant issue, as the transmission is a critical component of the vehicle's drivetrain.
  • Radio Randomly Shuts Off: Two owners of the 1996 Avenger have reported that their radio randomly shuts off. This can be frustrating, especially during long drives, and may require replacement or repair of the radio.
  • Water Pump Failure: One owner of the 1995 Avenger reported a water pump failure. The water pump is an essential component of the car's cooling system, and failure can lead to overheating and potential engine damage.
  • Bad Ball Joints: In the 1999 Avenger, there has been one complaint about bad ball joints. Ball joints are critical suspension components, and failure can lead to steering and handling issues.
  • Squeaky Brakes: One of the more prominent issues with the Dodge Avenger, specifically the 2014 year model, is squeaky brakes. While this issue isn't as severe as some of the items on this list, it can be an annoying problem for owners who have experienced it firsthand. Some owners have replaced their brakes in hopes of solving the problem, but the noise kept coming back. Dodge has yet to issue recalls or technical service bulletins (TSBs) to address this issue.
  • Engine Stalling: Engine stalling is a serious problem that can put drivers and their passengers in danger, especially if they're on the highway. In the Dodge Avenger, this issue has been reported in 2008-2014 models, with the root cause varying from faulty Totally Integrated Power Modules (TIPMs) to throttle bodies that need to be replaced. Repair costs for this problem depend on the root cause. For example, owners of the 2008 Avenger have reported paying an average of $300 to fix or replace faulty throttles, while owners of the 2012 year model have reported paying at least $1,000 to replace the TIPM.
  • Engine Not Starting: Several model years of the Dodge Avenger, including 2008-2014, have starting problems. For some vehicles, the anti-theft system may prevent the vehicle from starting properly due to electrostatic discharge, which can affect the wireless control module. This issue can cause wires to short circuit, potentially leading to engine fires. Dodge issued a recall on November 8, 2007, to inspect and repair the connectors in affected vehicles.
  • Rough Idle and Stalling: Some 1999 Dodge Avenger owners have reported a rough idle and stalling issue. In one instance, the distributor had a chipped top end, hard gaskets, and was leaking oil. After replacing the valve cover and spark plug tubes gaskets, timing belt and water pump, and spark plugs, the problem persisted. A diagnostics test at the dealership revealed a C/S engine missing and dying at idle, with a history of nine engine repairs. The issue was leaning towards the distributor, and a replacement of the distributor and spark plug wires was suggested.

It is essential to address these common problems promptly to ensure the safety and longevity of the 1999 Dodge Avenger. Regular maintenance and inspections can help identify potential issues before they become major problems.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2013-11-12
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: I AM A AUTO MECHANIC AND UNFORTUNATELY OWN A 1999 DODGE AVENGER 2.5L V6 AUTO. THE ENGINE IS JUNK. IT HAS HAD AN INTERMITTENT MISFIRE SINCE BEFORE I BOUGHT IT. CHRYSLER KNOWS THEY PUT A FAULTY CAMSHAFT SENSOR INSIDE THE DISTRIBUTOR SO WHEN IT DOES FAIL WHICH IT DOES IN EVERY 6 CYCLE AVENGER, THE STEALERSHIP TRIES TO TELL CUSTOMERS THAT THE SENSOR CANNOT BE REPLACED AND YOU HAVE TO GET A NEW DISTRIBUTOR ASSEMBLY WHICH THEY CHARGE $ 1500 FOR PARTS AND LABOR. YOU CAN'T BUY ONE ANYWHERE ELSE BECAUSE OF THE FAULTY CAM SENSOR PROBLEM AND THEY DO THIS INTENTIONALLY TO GET YOU TO SPEND MONEY ON CHRYSLER PARTS. THEY PUT THE CAM SENSOR IN THE DISTRIBUTOR BECAUSE THEY KNEW THAT MAGNETIC INTERFERENCE FROM THE IGNITION COIL WOULD CAUSE THE SENSOR TO FAIL. WHEN THIS HAPPENS THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT FLASHES MORE AND MORE THE WORSE THE SENSOR GETS. THAT IS JUST THE START OF THE ENGINE PROBLEMS. ONCE THE CAM SENSOR FAILS THE TIMING GETS OFFSET AND OVER TIME CAUSES THE VALVES TO GET BENT BY THE PISTONS, AFTER THAT IT'S BYE BYE HEADS AND NO CAR UNLESS YOU BUY A BETTER CAR. IF THEY WOULD PUT THE CAM SENSOR WHERE IT BELONGS, I WOULDN'T BE WRITING THIS. CHEVY FROM NOW ON. *TR

  • VIN: 4B3AU52N7XE
  • Components: WHEELS
  • Summary: I AM THE OWNER OF A 1999 DODGE AVENGER ES WITH 17" SILVER 5-SPOKE ALUMINUM RIMS. I LEARNED THIS WEEK THAT 3 OF THE 4 RIMS ARE BENT, CAUSING VEHICLE TO VIBRATE. IN ADDITION, THE CLEAR COAT BEGAN PEELING OFF ALL THE RIMS IN 2000.*AK CAR BEGAN VIBRATING AND DRIVING STRANGELY FEBRUARY OF 2005. I HAD THE PASSENGER LOWER CONTROL ARM, PASSENGER HUB ASSEMBLY AND PASSENGER DRIVESHAFT REPLACED. CAR DRIVES BETTER NOW, BUT VIBRATION CONTINUES. BROUGHT CAR TO A WHEEL SHOP THIS WEEK TO REPAIR A 5TH BENT RIM I GOT FOR USE AS A FULL SIZE SPARE. WHEEL SHOP BALANCED THE 4 WHEELS ON THE CAR AND NOTIFIED ME THAT 3 OF THE 4 ORIGINAL WHEELS ARE "OUT OF TRUE" WHICH IS THE REASON FOR THE VIBRATION. THEY ATTRIBUTE THIS TO EXTREMELY SOFT ALUMINUM USED IN THE RIMS' CONSTRUCTION. UPON CHECKING ON THE INTERNET I FOUND THIS WAS A COMMON PROBLEM FOR 17" WHEELS MADE BY ENKEI? AND FOUND ON THE MITSUBISHI ECLIPSE, DODGE AVENGER AND CHRYSLER SEBRING BETWEEN 1997 AND 2001. SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2004-07-21
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC
  • Summary: THE ROTORS AND BRAKE PADS ON MY 1999 DODGE AVENGER WEAR OUT VERY QUICKLY (LESS THAN 10,000 MILES). I HAVE READ TWO POSSIBLE EXPLANATIONS: A MALFUNCTIONING BRAKE SENSOR IS KEEPING THE BRAKES ENGAGED SLIGHTLY AND CREATING EXCESS HEAT AND WEAR; THE ROTORS WERE ORIGINALLY DESIGNED FOR THE MITSUBISHI ECLIPSE (A SIGNIFICANTLY SMALLER AND LIGHTER CAR THEN THE AVENGER) AND ARE NOT LARGE ENOUGH TO HANDLE THE BRAKING NEEDS OF THE AVENGER. IT IS CLEAR FROM THIS AND MANY OTHER AUTOMOBILE COMPLAINT SITES THAT THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THE SEBRING AND AVENGER MODELS. IN LIGHT OF THE RECENT COVER UPS MITSUBISHI IS ACCUSED OF PERPETRATING REGARDING RECALLS, IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT THIS ISSUE BE MADE PUBLIC AND THAT BOTH DODGE AND MITSUBISHI WORK TO RECTIFY THE PROBLEM. *LA

SEATS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2003-08-12
  • VIN: 4B3AU42N1XE
  • Components: SEATS
  • Summary: THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE FRONT SEATS IN MY 1999, DODGE, AVENGER, PROBABLY DEALING WITH FAULTY WELDS IN THE FRAME.*AK ON JULY 1, 2003, AFTER HAVING THE SEAT LEANED FORWARD TO ACCESS THE BACK SEAT, I RETURNED THE SEAT TO ITS NORMAL UPRIGHT LOCKED POSITION. HOWEVER, THE SEAT CONTINUED TO RECLINE FARTHER THAN ITS PROPER LOCKED POSITION (I KEEP IT AT ROUGHLY AN 80-DEGREE ANGLE, AND IT IMPROPERLY RECLINED TO ROUGHLY A 65-DEGREE ANGLE). I CHECKED WITH THE DEALERSHIP, AND THE SERVICE PERSONNEL SAID THE FRAME LIKELY BENT, AND THAT IT WOULD BE AT LEAST $450 (FOR PARTS) PLUS LABOR TO REPLACE IT. HE SUGGESTED INSTALLING A USED SEAT AS A REPLACEMENT TO SAVE MONEY, WHICH I RECENTLY PURCHASED AND AM HOPING TO INSTALL SOON. WHEN I WROTE CHRYSLER CUSTOMER SERVICE, THEY SAID THEY WOULDN'T FIX IT OR REPLACE IT BECAUSE IT WAS OUT OF ITS THREE-YEAR WARRANTY (THE CAR IS JUST UNDER FOUR YEARS OLD AND HAS ROUGHLY 54,000 MILES ON IT). NEEDLESS TO SAY, I WAS DISAPPOINTED IN THEIR RESPONSE. TODAY, I WAS IN MY CAR AND REACHED FOR MY WALLET. A POPPING SOUND CAME FROM THE SEAT, AND IT RECLINED FULLY. THIS IS ABSOLUTELY UNACCEPTABLE. I HAVE CHECKED THE INTERNET AND HAVE COME UP WITH AT LEAST TWO OTHER INSTANCES OF THE SAME PROBLEM, ONE WHERE A GENTLEMAN REACHED FOR HIS WALLET AND THE SEAT RECLINED (HTTP://WWW.CONSUMERAFFAIRS.COM/AUTOMOTIVE/DODGE_AVENGER.HTM) AND ONE WHERE A GENTLEMAN WAS DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD AND HIS SEAT RECLINED (HTTP://MEMBERS.AOL.COM/_HT_A/GRNCAMARO/OWNERSE8.HTM). I AM CONCERNED THAT SINCE I AM NOT THE ONLY PERSON TO HAVE THIS PROBLEM, IT IS A MANUFACTURING DEFECT, AND I WANT CHRYSLER TO FIX THIS PROBLEM.

STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2003-07-11
  • Components: STRUCTURE
  • Summary: THE EXTERIOR DOOR HANDLES KEEP BREAKING WHILE OPENING THE DOOR. THERE ARE 2 PLASTIC PIECES ON EACH SIDE OF THE DOOR HANDLE THAT ( WHEN PULLED UP TO OPEN THE DOOR FROM THE OUTSIDE ) THEY ARE ATTACHED TO THE EQUIPEMENT INSIDE THE DOOR PANEL THAT RELEASED THE LATCH AND OPEND THE DOOR. THOSE TWO PLASTIC PIECES KEEP BREAKING,THEREFORE NOT ALLOWING THE DOOR HINGES TO RELEASE AND OPEN THE DOOR. I REPLACED THE DRIVER SIDE IN EARLY 2002 ( A DEALER ITEM ONLY AND COST $ 90.00 WITHOUT INSTILLATION ). TWO WEEKS AGO, THE PASSENGER SIDE BROKE AND I TRIED TO FIX IT (BY PLACING A SCREW BETWEEN THE TWO PLASTIC PIECES AND THEN APPLYING SUPER GLUEING OVER THE SCREW). TODAY THE (NEW) DRIVER SIDE BROKE WHILE I WAS OUT SHOPPING ( SAME PIECES AS THE FIRST TIME ) I WENT TO THE PASSENGER SIDE OF THE CAR AND I BROKE AS WELL ( BUT THIS TIME IT HELD WHERE I SUPER GLUED IT ) , THE COMPLETE OUTSIDE BAR (THAT RISES WHILE OPENING THE DOOR) BROKE OFF IN MY HAND. THE ONLY WAY I WAS ABLE TO GET INTO MY CAR WAS TO SLIDE MY ARM DOWN THE INSIDE OF THE WINDOW ( SINCE I HAD LEFT THEM CRACKED ). I CURRENTLY CANNOT OPEN EITHER DOOR FROM THE OUTSIDE UNLESS MY WINDOWS ARE ROLLED DOWN. *AK

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2003-01-16
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: I HAVE A 1999 DODGE AVENGER SPORT (2.5L AUTO). AT 48,000 MILES THE TORQUE CONVERTER FAILED ON MY AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION (INFAMOUS A604 TRANSMISSION). DODGE REFUSED A GOODWILL REPAIR, THE CAR IS JUST OUT OF WARRANTY, AND I FEEL THAT IT IS RIDICULOUS FOR A CAR THAT IS 3 YEARS OLD WITH BARELY ANY MILEAGE TO REQUIRE A TRANSMISSION REBUILD. I HAVE SEEN MANY PEOPLE HAVE SUFFERED FROM SIMILAR PROBLEMS WITH THEIR A604/41TE TRANSMISSION (LOOK TO BBS.ASOG.NET UNDER TRANSMISSION FORUM). I ALSO KNOW THIS TRANSMISSION HAS BEEN DEFECTIVE GOING BACK TO IT'S INTRODUCTION IN 1989. WHEN IS ENOUGH ENOUGH, AND WHEN WILL CHRYSLER BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS? NOT TO MENTION THAT I ALMOST DIED WHEN THE LIMP-HOME-MODE SWITCHED ON AS I WAS TRAVELING 70 MPH ON I-95 (THE CAR AUTOMATICALLY SWITCHED INTO SECOND GEAR FROM FOURTH, THE CAR BEHIND ME ALMOST CRASHED INTO THE REAR OF MY CAR, AND THIS CAUSED DAMAGE TO MY ENGINE). I DID NOT GET INTO AN ACCIDENT OR CAUSE ANY FATALITIES, BUT I CANNOT SEE HOW THIS TRANSMISSION OR LIMP-HOME-MODE IS SAFE. HOW CAN THEY SELL A TRANSMISSION THAT DIES UNDER 50,000 MILES? *JB

Negative 1999 Dodge Avenger car reviews

  1. Sylvan Jacobson 2025-01-03

I purchased this car back in June of 2009, it was a 1999 Dodge Avenger. Unfortunately, after only 2 weeks of having it and being a new driver, the ball joint on the top right went out! This accident was quite scary for me, and the cost to fix it was also quite high ($940.00). Additionally, this car does not handle well when going over potholes or bumps in the road, and the engine has an odd ticking sound. Overall, it may not have been the best choice for a first car. However, it does have some great features such as a sunroof and a stock sound system that are pretty impressive.

This car seems to be costing you a lot of money.

  3. Leonardo Yundt 2024-06-15

When I first bought the car, I had to replace the alternator due to its high mileage of 151,000 miles. I also had to purchase a few other things, but that's to be expected. Unfortunately, the road noise is quite loud, but I was able to improve it by installing better speakers. The power steering pump is also quite noisy, and I anticipate it will need to be replaced soon. Additionally, the rims are experiencing some peeling of the clear coat, which is not very appealing. However, if you're primarily interested in the car's exterior, it may still be a good choice. That's what I did, and I'm happy with my decision!

  4. Imani Hackett 2024-06-09

The car has some decent power, which I like, but unfortunately it has too many problems. The brakes burn out too quickly and the transmission doesn't shift well at all. Additionally, the car clunks on every bump, which can be quite annoying. The ride noise is also quite loud and it's difficult to see out of the back window, especially for those who are not very tall. On the positive side, I do appreciate the power everything and sunroof. However, given all the dangers I've read about on other websites, I cannot recommend this car at all.

Positive 1999 Dodge Avenger car reviews

  1. Claude O'Keefe 2024-11-12

I love this car! It's just that the turning radius is a bit wider than usual, which can make U-turns a bit of a hassle, especially if you're like me and tend to get lost a lot.

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with my car that I got back in summer '05. It's a beautiful car that looks like it's worth a lot more than it really is. While it could use a bit more all-around power, you really feel the most power uphill. However, it's still a very fun car to drive, and it handles great. I've been lucky enough to have had no problems with it since I got it, and it's at 97,656 miles now.

This is my second Avenger. The first one was a 1995. I have found this one to be more dependable than the first. Although I have had no major problems until the last month or so, the Antilock Brake light keeps coming on. I plan to get it checked next week. The dealership had to clean black goo (body coating) off the door sills, but overall, I really like the car. I got rid of the LOUD, ROUGH RIDING Goodyears and put Dunlops on. What a great improvement that was!

  4. Ahmad Hane 2024-09-02

I purchased this car back in the summer of '05, and despite it being a '99 model, it still boasts the best sound system I've heard in a long time. I've only had to replace the battery so far, and while it has a decent amount of power, it could use a bit more to match its sporty body style. Additionally, driving it is a blast, and with my 18-inch rims, it turns heads wherever I go. If you're a fan of this body style, I highly recommend considering this car. It's not only reliable and fuel-efficient, but it's also a joy to drive.

Coasting by on the strip. With added, many big speakers, the thing sizzles. I used to drive an APV van, but now I drive an accelerated speed booster with leather, extra bass, rims, and da club. Just don't pick up your grandma in it though, the seats are horribly uncomfortable.
