1999 Volvo S80 problems
The Volvo S80 is an executive car produced by the Swedish manufacturer Volvo Cars from 1998 to 2016 across two generations. It took the place of the rear-wheel-drive S90 as Volvo's flagship sedan.
The first generation (1998–2006) was made available for the 1999 model year. It has since been built at the Torslanda Works in Gothenburg, Sweden, with a few 1999 model year cars for the North American market built at Volvo's Halifax Assembly plant. Unlike most Volvo models, it did not have a station wagon version for its first generation.
The second generation (2006–2016) was released in 2006 as a model year 2007 car. It has an estate version, the third generation of the Volvo V70. In June 2007, the S80 scored the highest "good" rating in the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) crash test performance for frontal, side, and rear impacts, earning it the IIHS Top Safety Pick.
The model was replaced by the second generation S90 in the later half of 2016.

Based on complaints from owners of the 1999 Volvo S80, several common problems have been reported:
- Premature Front Control Arm Bushing Wear:
- Premature wear of the front control arm bushings is a common issue in the Volvo S80. This can result in a squeaking or knocking sound from the front of the car and may cause the vehicle to pull to one side. Replacing the front control arm bushings is necessary to prevent alignment issues.
- Steering Wheel Module Failure:
- The steering wheel module (SWM) in the Volvo S80 is prone to failure, leading to non-functional turn signals, horn, audio buttons, and cruise control. Owners are advised to replace the module to restore these functions. While this repair is technical, there are online guides available to assist with the replacement process.
- Premature Light Bulb Wear:
- Another common issue reported by owners is premature light bulb wear in the Volvo S80. While there is no permanent fix for this problem, using long-lasting light bulbs can help mitigate the issue. It is recommended to handle the bulbs carefully to avoid premature wear.
- ABS Control Module Failure:
- The ABS control module in the first generation of the Volvo S80 is prone to failure, leading to the ABS warning light appearing on the dashboard. To address this issue, owners need to replace the ABS control module to resolve the problem effectively.
These common problems with the 1999 Volvo S80 can impact the performance, safety, and overall driving experience of the vehicle. Addressing these issues promptly and with the appropriate solutions can help maintain the reliability and functionality of the car.

- VIN: YV1TS90D1X1
- Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE
- Summary: HELLO, I RECENTLY PURCHASED USED "99 VOLVO S80 T6 - VIN [XXX]. A FRIEND WAS STANDING NEXT TO MY PARKED CAR LAST WEEK, STARTED TO LIGHT A CIGARETTE, AND I STOPPED HIM BECAUSE I SMELLED A STRONG GASOLINE VAPOR. LOOKING UNDER THE CAR, THERE WAS WHAT LOOKED TO BE ABOUT 2 CUPS OF RAW GAS ABOUT 1/2' IN AND IN FRONT OF THE PASSENGER REAR TIRE. ASIDE FROM THE OBVIOUS LOSS OF A VEHICLE, WE COULD VERY EASILY HAVE BECOME A BURN STATISTIC OR WORSE, AND THAT LIKELY WOULD EXTEND TO ALL OF THE HE OTHER PEOPLE WHO WERE STANDING NEARBY. AT THE TIME. AN INTERNET SEARCH FOR "VOLVO S80 FUEL LEAK" THAT EVENING YIELDED MULTIPLE RESULTS THAT INDICATED THIS IS COMMONLY REPORTED PROBLEM ON ALL S-80 MODELS, AND THAT A RECALL WAS IN EFFECT FOR 2002 AND NEWER VEHICLES TO REPLACE THE FUEL PUMP DUE TO FAILURE WITH HAIRLINE CRACKS IN THE NOZZLE CONNECTING TO THE RETURN LINE, CAUSING A LOT OF FUEL TO SPRAY UNDER THE CAR BELOW THE REAR SEAT, SINCE THE RETURN LINE IS UNDER HIGH PRESSURE AT ALL TIMES. HERE IS BUT ONE LINK ON THIS SAFETY PROBLEM AND RECALL - HTTP://WWW.MATTHEWSVOLVOSITE.COM/FORUMS/VIEWTOPIC.PHP?F=11&T=25517. UPON OPENING THE ACCESS PANEL TO VIEW THE TOP OF THE FUEL PUMP, IT WAS CLEARLY EVIDENT THAT MY CAR HAS THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM AS DESCRIBED IN THE RECALL NOTICE. I CALLED VOLVO CUSTOMER SERVICE (800 458 1552) AND WAS TOLD THERE ARE NO ACTIVE RECALLS MATCHING MY VIN. I PUSHED ABOUT THE RECALL AND THEY FINALLY AGREED IT IS A WELL KNOWN PROBLEM BUT THE RECALL DOESN'T APPLY TO 99-01 MODELS, EVEN THOUGH THEY ALSO AGREED THAT THEY USE EXACTLY THE SAME PUMP AND CONFIGURATION. I WAS ALSO TOLD THAT VOLVO DOESN'T HAVE A PHONE NUMBER FOR NHTSA! SOMEONE IS GOING TO GET SERIOUSLY INJURED OR KILLED BECAUSE OF THIS CATASTROPHIC FUEL SYSTEM FAILURE, SO PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, EXPAND THIS RECALL FOR ALL YEARS AND MODELS OF VOLVO THAT USE THIS KNOWN DEFECTIVE COMPONENT. TIRES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2010-04-17
- VIN: YV1TS97D0X1
- Components: TIRES
- Summary: ON APRIL 13, 2010 I WAS TOLD BY THE SALESMAN THAT THE YOKOHAMA TIRE IS AS GOOD AS THE MICHELIN TIRES THAT I HAD ON MY CAR. (1 OF MY MICHELIN TIRES WAS SHOWING STEEL BELTS, APPARENTLY FROM SPINNING MY TIRES TRYING TO GET OUT OF THE SNOW ON MY GRAVEL DRIVEWAY THIS PAST MAR 2010.) SINCE THE MICHELINS WERE NEARLY 4 YEARS OLD AND THE SALESMAN SAID THE SIDEWALLS WERE ROTTING, ON APR 13, 2010, I PURCHASED 4 YOKAHAMA TIRES. ON APR 17, 2010, I VISITED FRIENDS IN REHOBOTH BEACH AREA OF DE AND WHILE PRKG AT THE GROCERY STORE I HIT A CURB/PRKG STOP WHILE PRKG. THE SPEED OF TRAVEL AT THE TIME WAS AT A COAST SINCE I HAD MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE AT THE TIME. THE IMPACT WAS SO SLIGHT NEITHER I NOR MY PASS. WAS PROMPTED TO INSPECT THE TIRE. AFTER A NORMAL WKND OF DRIVING THROUGH TOWN AND THEN RETURNING TO MY HOME IN LEXINGTON, VA., I NOTICED THE BUBBLE IN THE SIDEWALL OF THE RIGHT FRONT TIRE. THERE WAS NO IMPACT MARK ON THE TIRE THAT I COULD SEE THAT WOULD CAUSE ME TO THINK THAT I HAD HIT SOMETHING SHARP. THE SALESMAN WHO SOLD ME THE TIRE POINTED TO A SPOT ON THE BUBBLE( I COULD NOT DISCERN THE MARK) WITH A PEN POINT AND SAID THAT THERE IS A MARK ON THE TIRE AND IT SEEMS THAT THE BUBBLE WAS CAUSED BY HITTING SOMETHING SHARP. NOW, I DO NOT CONTEND THAT I DID NOT HIT A PKNG/CURB STOP...I CONTEND IT WAS OF NO GREAT SPEED AT IMPACT. I CONTEND THAT THIS TIRE MAY BE UNSAFE; ESPECIALLY IF IT HAD FAILED DURING MY 450-MILE DRIVE HOME FROM DE. THE SALESMAN SAID, "WELL, IF YOU HIT IT AT JUST THE RIGHT WAY, IT WILL DAMAGE THE TIRE." ( I THINK MY OLD MICHELIN TIRES WOULD HAVE FAIRED BETTER AND I PROMPTLY REPLACED THE YOKOHAMA WITH MICHELINS. I FEEL SAFER BUT FEEL THIS NEEDS TO BE REPORTED. THERE WAS NO BLEMISH, YET THE SIDEWALL INSIDE THE TIRE WAS JAGGEDLY RIPPED APPROX. 1-INCH IN LENGTH. CASE # YOKOHAMA [XXX] CLAIM ADJUSTMENT NO. [XXX] PURCHASED FROM TERRY'S TIRE TOWN, HENRICO, VA 23222 THROUGH LEXINGTON EXPRESS LUBE, LEXINGTON, VA. I hope you're enjoying your car! It's always exciting to receive a message after a period of silence, almost like a call from nature to a wild animal, but in this case, it's a call to the dealer. Your car is fantastic - it has great power, handles smoothly, and has an unbeatable sound. The brakes are also top-notch, and the driver's seat feels like a cockpit. When I set the cruise at 62mph, I get an impressive 36.6mpg, which is not only displayed but also calculated at the pump. The car can go from 0-80 in less than 8 seconds, and the transmission seems to know when I need some extra power, engaging smoothly and quickly. I added H2S Xenons w/H7 adapter, and the headlamps create a perfect light/dark cut on the upper portion of the beam. Maintenance costs have been even lower than our other vehicle (Toyota).

Hey there! In September 2008, I bought a white 1999 S80 2.9 Executive with surround sound stereo, 4-disk CD changer, performance suspension and handling, and exactly 90,000 miles on it for only $5,500. I test drove it and it ran great! Unfortunately, two weeks after I bought it, the 'attention' triangle lit up red and the status screen said 'Transmission service urgent.' Luckily, the warranty I purchased from the dealer covered the transmission rebuild. Even after the rebuild, the warning came up again. But, I took it to my local Volvo dealership and they found out that the Mass Air Flow Sensor was bad. It was an easy $175 fix because of labor, and since then, it has been a great car!

We are absolutely thrilled with our first Volvo! The S80 T6 has been an incredible car, and we are already planning to stick with Volvo for our next purchase. The performance is outstanding, and it's also incredibly comfortable. We've had no issues with reliability, which is a huge plus. We've owned several BMWs in the past, but we won't be going back after experiencing the joy of the S80 T6. The value for money is unbeatable - this car is priced at under $50,000, but we truly believe it should be priced at over $60,000 based on its features and quality. We couldn't be happier with our purchase!

I purchased this car as recertified in 10/01 and it has been awesome! It seems like any problems with this model were fixed by the previous owner. I haven't had a single problem with it since day 1, even after driving 13k miles and now at 38k. The comfort and reliability are incredible, and the acceleration is something else. To sum it up, this car is a perfect combination of power and luxury. Anyone who drives with me is stunned by the performance and comfort. Of course, safety is always a top priority, but I'm confident in this car's abilities.

I recently purchased a used car from a Volvo dealership and unfortunately experienced some issues with the traction control module and transmission service urgent warnings within two months. It seems that the car had some serious electronic and mechanical issues from its prior life. After losing control and ending up in a ditch, the TCM was replaced. I also experienced a near-fatal loss of power due to a faulty Electronic Throttle Module on an expressway surrounded by semis going 75mph, but thankfully the dealer replaced it on recall. The last issue was another bout of Transmission Service Urgent warnings, which the dealer claimed meant needing a new transmission at less than 80K miles. However, I am happy to report that my 2005 S80 T6 has been problem-free for the past 8 months of cross-country driving.

I have owned this vehicle for a year now and unfortunately, I have had to replace the ABS brake module, air mass sensor, engine mounts, tie rods, power steering stops, and a vacuum line. Despite these issues, the car has great performance, looks good, and drives well. However, I would recommend caution when considering purchasing this vehicle unless you have a second car and are prepared to spend money on repairs and maintenance. Alternatively, you could consider purchasing a Honda.

The fuel door issue and poor handling in the snow, despite having a winter package, are serious concerns that require immediate attention. Additionally, the power doors and windows have been problematic since day one, and it is imperative that a resolution is found. As a loyal Volvo customer, I am disappointed that the only incentive for me to continue with the brand is a $1500 rebate for leasing another vehicle. Therefore, I am considering exploring other options, such as a BMW dealer in the area.

The turbo engine is smooth and powerful, but unfortunately, there have been many mechanical problems and design issues. It is concerning that even the SRS systems stop working. I am sorry to hear that Volvo did not take responsibility and left you with an unsafe vehicle. It is understandable that you would be frustrated. I hope that an engineer can solve the problem. It is also concerning that the fuel tank stopped accepting fuel and the fuel line broke within weeks after spending $2200 to fix other problems. Additionally, the Electronic Control Module (control for SRS) is located beneath the cup holder, which leaked twice and cost you >$800 each time to fix. It is disappointing that Volvo did not take responsibility for the bad design or offer a solution. The bottom line is that Volvo and its dealers left you with expenses and estimates of more than $15,000 on a car with less than 86,000 miles and a lot less safe than older cars.

The Volvo flagship sedan has had several minor issues over the past three years, including three transmissions, a new mass air flow meter, five wheel alignments, transmission line solenoids, torque mount bushings, several transmission software fixes, and lower ball joints. Unfortunately, a new electronic throttle module is now required, which will cost $900.

Although the car was purchased used, it has been a challenging experience. However, I have learned a lot about car maintenance and have been able to keep it running. Despite some issues, I have been able to make the necessary repairs and keep the car on the road. I am confident in my ability to continue to maintain the car and ensure its longevity.
