2004 Volvo S80 problems

volvo logo

The Volvo S80 is an executive car produced by the Swedish manufacturer Volvo Cars from 1998 to 2016 across two generations. It took the place of the rear-wheel-drive S90 as Volvo's flagship sedan.

The first generation (1998–2006) was made available for the 1999 model year. It has since been built at the Torslanda Works in Gothenburg, Sweden, with a few 1999 model year cars for the North American market built at Volvo's Halifax Assembly plant. Unlike most Volvo models, it did not have a station wagon version for its first generation.

The second generation (2006–2016) was released in 2006 as a model year 2007 car. It has an estate version, the third generation of the Volvo V70. In June 2007, the S80 scored the highest "good" rating in the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) crash test performance for frontal, side, and rear impacts, earning it the IIHS Top Safety Pick.

The model was replaced by the second generation S90 in the later half of 2016.

Common 2004 Volvo S80 problems

The Volvo S80, introduced in 2004, is known for its safety, comfort, and performance:

  • Squeaking or knocking noise: A squeaking or knocking sound coming from the front of the car could indicate premature wear in the front control arm bushings. This issue can also cause the car to pull to one side while driving on a straight road. Replacing the front control arm bushings can resolve this problem.
  • Steering wheel module (SWM) failure: The SWM in the S80 can be prone to complete failure, causing the turn signals, horn, audio buttons, and cruise control to stop working. Replacing the SWM with a new module can solve this issue, but it requires a technical job that may require online guidance.
  • Premature light bulb wear: The S80 is known for experiencing premature wear in the front and rear exterior lights. This problem can be addressed by using more long-lasting light bulbs, which are available in the BreakerYard store.
  • ABS control module failure: The ABS control module in the first generation of the S80 is prone to failure, resulting in the ABS warning light appearing on the dashboard. Fitting a replacement ABS control module is the solution to this problem.
  • Fuel leak: Volvo has issued a recall for about 70,000 UK cars due to a possible fuel leak, which could lead to a massive engine fire. This issue affects the 2004 Volvo S80, and owners are advised to take their cars to a Volvo dealer for inspection and necessary repairs.
  • Suspension failures: The S80 has experienced suspension failures, which can lead to major concerns. Ensuring that the necessary work has been done on the car, particularly if it has had a Volvo dealer service, is crucial.
  • Seatbelt anchorage problems: The S80 has also had issues with seatbelt anchorage problems, which can be a major concern for safety. Ensuring that the necessary work has been done on the car is essential.
  • Exhaust heat shield: The exhaust heat shield can become loose, causing rattles in the S80. While this is not a serious problem, it can be annoying for drivers.
  • Oil cooler leaks: Leaking oil coolers on automatic gearboxes can be a problem in the S80, particularly if the units are mounted low down and can get damaged by speed bumps. Ensuring that the necessary work has been done on the car is important.

While the 2004 Volvo S80 has some common problems, many owners have reported positive experiences with the car. Regular maintenance and addressing issues promptly can help ensure a smooth and enjoyable driving experience.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-02-08
  • VIN: YV1TS92D641
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: Both of the key fobs I have are broken in that the key won't lock straight out or stay folded into the fob. The weight of the plastic fob alone frequently causes the key to twist backwards if the road is bumpy or uneven, which kills the engine and makes it extremely difficult to steer to safety without power steering. The first time this happened to me I was traveling at 55 mph on a crowded highway but fortunately I was in the rightmost lane, not in a curve, and was approaching an area where I could pull over to safety. I have had to duct tape both keys in the open position to prevent this. The situation is much worse if additional keys or other weight is added to the ring. It is possible to insert a broken key in a way that causes the weight of the fob to hang away from the driver but large road bumps or accidental interference from the driver or passengers can cause it to flip backwards anyway. These incidents are alarming and confusing for the driver, particularly the first time, and could easily cause an accident depending on the conditions. I am not the only person who has experienced this issue, and it will become even more common as these vehicles age.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2017-01-28
  • VIN: YV1TS92D041
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: THE CAR IS PUTTING FORTH A STRONG ODOR OF GASOLINE. THIS WAS FIRST NOTICED A COUPLE OF WEEKS AGO BUT WAS PUT DOWN TO HAVING JUST FILLED THE TANK. THE PROBLEM HAS PROGRESSED TO THE POINT WHERE YOU CAN SMELL GAS 20 FEET AWAY FROM THE CAR. WE ARE NOT ALLOWING OUR DAUGHTER TO DRIVE THE CAR AS IT IS AN EXTREME FIRE HAZARD. I HAD THE SAME ISSUE WITH ANOTHER S80 IN 2015 WHICH ALSO WASN'T COVERED IN THE RECALL SINCE IT WAS NOT SOLD IN A "HOT CLIMATE". WITH THAT CAR THE FUEL PUMP (WITH DEFECTIVE FLANGE) WAS REPLACED AND THE PROBLEM WENT AWAY. ALTHOUGH I AM NOT CONVINCED THAT HEAT IS THE PROBLEM (RATHER THE DEFECTIVE FLANGE) THE TEMPERATURES IN OUR AREA RANGES FROM 15 IN WINTER TO LOW 100S IN THE SUMMER. THIS IS A PROBLEM WHICH VOLVO HAS ACKNOWLEDGED AND IT CLEARLY MAKES DRIVING THE CAR DANGEROUS IF NOT DEADLY. RECALL FOR THIS PROBLEM 09V483000 - VOLVO RECALL #R220.

STEERING,SUSPENSION,POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2016-04-15
  • VIN: YV1TS91Z841
  • Components: STEERING,SUSPENSION,POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: PURCHASED A 2004 VOLVO S80 IN "MINT CONDITION" FROM A USED CAR DEALERSHIP (GOOD REPUTATION).THREE (3) MONTHS LATER THE TRANSMISSION STARTED THE FAMOUS VOLVO "SLIP, SLIDE, AWAY".. IT RIDES LIKE A ROCK, I FELL EVERY CRACK, GRAIN OF SAND IN THE ROAD. I REPLACED THE STRUTS, COIL SPRINGS, LOWER CONTROL ARMS AND OTHER SUSPENSIONS PARTS BUT TO NO AVAIL IMPROVED ITS CONDITION. EVERY WEEK OR SO I GET THE "STOP SAFELY COOLANT LEVEL LOW" WARNING ON MY DASH...KEEP IN MIND THE DEALERSHIP HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH THESE ISSUES SINCE THE CONDITIONS DIDN'T APPEARED UNTIL 3 MONTHS/50000 MILES AFTER THE PURCHASE. STEERING HAS SOME PLAY AND I'M CONTINUOUSLY RECOVERING THE DIRECTIONAL PATH SLIGHTLY. SHORTLY AFTER I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE I INSTALLED ALL NEW TIRES (MICHELINS) PURCHASED A LIFETIME WHEEL ALIGNMENT, WHICH WAS DONE DURING NEW TIRE INSTALL AND RECENTLY RE-CHECKED. I DO 90% OF THE WORK MYSELF; I'M AN ENGINEER BY TRADE WITH 40 YEARS OF MECHANICAL SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE. CHECKED THE RECALL DATABASE BY VIN (SAFERCAR.GOV) AND VARIOUS OTHER SITES AND THERE WAS NO RECALL ON MY VEHICLE. THE VOLVO SITUATION IS EXTREMELY DISHEARTENING FOR SUCH A WELL-KNOWN EUROPEAN CAR. FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2014-12-23
  • VIN: YV1TH59H441
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: SHORTLY AFTER MOVING TO NORTH CAROLINA, I BEGAN TO SMELL FUEL. I FIRST THOUGHT THAT IT WAS THE GAS CAP AND REPLACED IT. THE SMELL CONTINUED TO GROW STRONGER AND STRONGER, TO THE POINT I COULD NOT KEEP IT PARKED IN MY GARAGE IN MY TOWNHOME DUE TO THE SMELL OF GAS WHICH WOULD PERMEATE THE ENTIRE HOUSE. I ALSO NOTICED DURING THIS TIME A SUBSTANTIAL LOSS IN GAS MILEAGE. I TOOK THE CAR IN TO HAVE IT LOOKED AT. THE AUTO SHOP FOUND THAT THE FUEL PUMP WAS LEAKING AND SHOWED ME THE BACK OF THE FUEL TANK WHICH WAS COVERED IN GAS. DUE TO THE EXTREME RISK, THE AUTO SHOP STATED THAT THE PUMP NEEDED TO BE REPLACED IMMEDIATELY, ESPECIALLY SINCE I WAS ABOUT TO TAKE A 300-MILE TRIP. THE SHOP DID FIND THE RECALL: 09V483000 AND CALLED THE LOCAL VOLVO DEALER. THE DEALER STATED THAT MY CAR WAS NOT COVERED BY THE RECALL. I REQUESTED THAT THE FUEL PUMP BE GIVEN TO ME SO THAT I COULD REVIEW THE RECALL. I THEN REVIEWED ALL THE DOCUMENTATION ONLINE, SPECIFICALLY THE PICTURES OF THE PUMPS WHICH WERE COVERED VS. THE PUMP WHICH WAS BAD. MY PUMP MATCHES EXACTLY TO THE "BAD" PUMP. IN ADDITION, THE FACT THAT MY CAR WAS LEAKING GAS TO THE POINT OF COATING THE OUTSIDE OF THE FUEL TANK INDICATES THAT THIS SHOULD HAVE BEEN A COVERED INCIDENT.

THE CAR THEN HAD AROUND 90.000 MILES OR SO, NOW I TAKE MY CAR BACK WITH STRONG FUEL SMELL IN 2015 170.000 MILES AND I REPORTED TO VOLVO HEAD QUARTERS AND THEY TELL THEY WILL COVER THE PUMP ONLY AND NOT THE LABOR TO TUNE OF 550.00 BECAUSE THE CAR HAS OVER 150000 MILES ON IT AND IS PAST THE RECALL EXTENDED WARRINTY , BUT I THOUGHT UNDER RECALL P29075 THAT VOLVO IS LIA FOR FREE REPLACEMENT OF PARTS AND LABOR THE FIRST TIME I TOOK IT IN. VOLVO TOLD ME IT IS ABOUT 4 HRS LABOR WHEN THERE OWN RECALL CALLS FOR .09 HRS LABOR. SO IT HASN'T BEEN FIXED YET. Negative 2004 Volvo S80 car reviews

  1. Zakary Koepp 2024-09-27

In my experience, the Volvo has not lived up to its reputation for reliability. Despite my initial preference for its exterior style over a Lexus, the car has had major electronic failures every 4-6 months, requiring multiple trips to the dealership and even a visit from a company representative. Unfortunately, it has not been the reliable vehicle we were hoping for on road trips. I have found my older Subaru and Toyota to be more dependable options. It is important to carefully consider all options before making a purchase to ensure satisfaction in the long run.

The S80 2.9 - 2000 has had some issues in the past, but we have taken care of them and it is now running smoothly. We have addressed all the electrical and mechanical problems, including the hub bearings, sunroof, coils spring, fan motor, oil flame seal, and motor mount. We are confident in the car's performance and reliability. While the market value may not be as high as some other brands, we believe that the S80 is a great car and we stand by our decision to purchase it. We have had a positive experience with Waltrip Volvo in the Nashville area and would recommend them to others.

I bought my Volvo 8 years ago. Since then, I have had to fix it multiple times. The windows stopped working three times, the motor mount broke, the throttle body needed cleaning, and the lights quit working. In contrast, I have owned three different Toyota vehicles and put over 150,000 miles on each of them without encountering similar issues. Based on my experience, I would not consider buying another Volvo.

This is my second S80 and I am glad to say that I am not disappointed. The car has been refined and improved, but it still maintains its basic solid comfort and superior performance. It is a pleasure to drive, particularly on the highway, and it is responsive, predictable, and dependable. It truly is a great vehicle!

I chose the S80 because I have always owned standard V6 sedans in the past. The S80 is, without a doubt, the best sedan I have ever owned or driven. When I left Denver in April, there was a foot of snow on the ground. However, with my DSTC on and working, I had no trouble driving or staying on the road. Other cars and trucks, even 4x4's, slid off the road, but I was able to hold a steady speed for the road conditions. I made it through the snowstorm until the DOT closed I-40 at 7200 feet elevation. Although the motto

I love everything about this car. From the performance (starting and stopping), to the beauty (interior and exterior), to the comfortable quiet ride.

  5. Braden Hayes 2024-08-27

I've owned three Volvos in the past 13 years, and this latest one is by far the best. It's in a class of its own with two booster seats and extra space for passengers in the back. The ride is incredibly smooth, and my wife, who usually gets car sick, hasn't had any issues in the S80. What I love about this luxury sedan is that it has a unique personality and doesn't look like all the other German and Japanese cars with their generic hi-tech styling. I have to give kudos to Volvo for bringing their traditional safety and reliability into the new millennium with a world-class level of comfort and style.
