2001 Volvo S80 problems

volvo logo

The Volvo S80 is an executive car produced by the Swedish manufacturer Volvo Cars from 1998 to 2016 across two generations. It took the place of the rear-wheel-drive S90 as Volvo's flagship sedan.

The first generation (1998–2006) was made available for the 1999 model year. It has since been built at the Torslanda Works in Gothenburg, Sweden, with a few 1999 model year cars for the North American market built at Volvo's Halifax Assembly plant. Unlike most Volvo models, it did not have a station wagon version for its first generation.

The second generation (2006–2016) was released in 2006 as a model year 2007 car. It has an estate version, the third generation of the Volvo V70. In June 2007, the S80 scored the highest "good" rating in the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) crash test performance for frontal, side, and rear impacts, earning it the IIHS Top Safety Pick.

The model was replaced by the second generation S90 in the later half of 2016.

  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WENT ON. I TOOK MY CAR TO MY MECHANIC WHO INFORMED ME THE CODE WAS FOR THROTTLE BODY POSITION SENSOR AND THAT THERE WAS A RECALL. I CALLED THE VOLVO DEALER AND ASKED THEM ABOUT IT. THEY SAID, YES THERE WAS A RECALL FOR SOFTWARE AND THAT MY VEHICLE HAD GOTTEN THE UPGRADE. I ASKED IF THERE WAS ANYTHING ELSE THEY COULD DO ABOUT IT, THE EMPLOYEE IN VOLVO SERVICE SAID NO. I RECEIVED THE SAME ANSWER WHEN I ASKED THEM IN PERSON. ON MARCH 1, 2011, NEARLY A YEAR LATER, I ASKED ANOTHER MECHANIC, WHO INFORMED ME THAT IF THE SOFTWARE UPGRADE DIDN'T WORK, THE DEALER WAS SUPPOSED TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE THROTTLE BODY. I CALLED THE ANOTHER VOLVO DEALER WHO INFORMED ME THAT YES, THIS WAS THE CASE. MY CAR WAS ONE DAY OUT OF COVERAGE FOR THE RECALL NOW. AND SOMETIME WITHIN THE YEAR MY COMPUTER WAS RESET AND THE PROBLEM CODE FOR THE THROTTLE BODY IS GONE. I AM UPSET BECAUSE WHEN IT WAS A PROBLEM FOR ME, THE FIRST DEALER GAVE ME THE INCORRECT INFORMATION ABOUT THE RECALL. I WAS DRIVING FOR A LONG TIME WITH MY CAR IN LIMP MODE AND A MALFUNCTIONING THROTTLE BODY. I AM SURE THAT THE DEALER WAS OBLIGATED TO REPLACE THE THROTTLE BODY, SINCE IT IS PART OF THE ACCELERATION SYSTEM. I THINK YOU SHOULD COMPEL THEM TO REPLACE MY THROTTLE BODY OR GUARANTEE REPLACEMENT IF MY THROTTLE BODY MALFUNCTIONS AGAIN. *TR

Negative 2001 Volvo S80 car reviews

  1. Jordan Gutmann 2024-10-23

I had a 1999 S80 that I loved. It was a dependable car and had over 150K when I got rid of it. However, when I bought a used 2001 S80 with 70K on it, I experienced lots of problems such as transmission, faulty air valves, sway bars, sensory issues, headlights burning out, and suspension problems. Unfortunately, these issues cost me thousands of dollars and I was thrilled when I finally sold the car after almost two years and 22K miles. While my experience was not great, I understand that every car is different and others may have had better experiences.

It's interesting to see how cars have evolved over the years. While older Volvos were known to last for 200,000 miles, my personal experience has been different. I've owned three Volvos so far, and while I enjoyed my 2001 S80, I'm currently facing a transmission issue at 72,000 miles. The cost of replacing it is quite high, especially considering the car's blue book value. However, I do believe that these cars can be great if you have the means to maintain them properly.

  3. Joan Effertz 2024-10-16

Hello there! Despite the title, I actually had a great experience with this car. While it may be a bit sluggish off the mark, it handles very well - just make sure to equip it with a good sport tire! The styling may be a bit old-fashioned for my taste, and I have noticed that it tends to be popular among older women. Of course, there's nothing wrong with that, but personally I prefer a more stylish and aggressive car. By the way, I think the cup holders in the front seats could use some improvement. :)

  4. Rupert Towne 2024-07-08

I really appreciate this car, but unfortunately, I have experienced some maintenance issues during my lease. Over the past 36 months, I have had to address at least 12 problems, including issues with the fuel pump, keyless lock system, heater, air conditioner, bulb outages, imploded sunroof (which was quite a surprise!), engine idle problem, failed ball joints, failed rubber moldings on doors, cup holder falling off, and a loose bracket in the undercarriage. While the design is great, the quality of the car has not met my expectations. If the car is not under warranty (after 50K), it may be time to consider other options.

  5. Rhiannon Kreiger 2024-06-27

The car experienced significant issues after only 40K miles, including the electronic throttle dying at 75 MPH, causing the engine to shut down and leaving me without any steering. Additionally, major repairs were required for the ignition, air pump/valve, and suspension before 48K. The interior parts are made of cheap plastic that break regularly, such as the cup holders, air vents, radio face, and center console. Furthermore, the rear visibility is poor, with most of the rear quarter panel and lights being totally blind. However, it is important to note that this car is not in the same league as Lexus and Acura.

Positive 2001 Volvo S80 car reviews

  1. Travis Ernser 2025-01-04

Just like a few other Volvos around this year, my throttle body went out. It was easy to fix, but a little pricey. Other than that, it's a great vehicle. It has 211k miles and is still running strong. I'll never own anything other than a Volvo!

  2. Berta Crona 2024-10-02

This vehicle offers great value for money compared to luxury cars like the Mercedes C-Class, BMW 5 series, and Audi A6. Despite not being as luxurious, it is larger and more affordable. However, I have experienced some issues with the car, including seat and mirror memory malfunctions, poor FM and AM reception, and engine pinging under a load, which the manufacturer claims is normal. Despite these issues, I still enjoy driving the car.

  3. Scottie Kunde 2024-08-08

This is a great boulevard car that handles nicely in sudden braking and in snow. The version without the turbo is a tad slow off the line but is fine for passing in traffic. It is quiet and solid, and has given me no mechanical problems. Like the other 3 Volvos I have owned, light bulbs burn out on a regular basis. Safety features abound and make one feel comfortable with all the aggressive SUV's around.

  4. Flavio Nicolas 2024-07-25

At 51000 miles, the rear shock needs to be replaced, but unfortunately it is not covered by warranty. Additionally, there is a rattle in the sun roof when driving between 75 and 80 mph, which is also not covered by warranty. The door locks broke at 22000 miles, which is disappointing. The AM radio reception is not great, which is surprising for a car with a factory installed radio. Unfortunately, the dealer is unable to fix it. The cost of normal service is quite high, and it requires more frequent maintenance than a Cadillac does at 100000 miles.

  5. Brennon Fadel 2024-06-25

I'm so glad to hear that you've been a loyal Volvo owner since 1972! It's great to see that Volvo has continued to improve with the S80, which you found to be very comfortable to drive. While you didn't find the improvement from your 1990 760 to be as striking as you expected after 10 years, it's understandable since you loved that 760 so much.
