2002 Volvo S80 problems
The Volvo S80 is an executive car produced by the Swedish manufacturer Volvo Cars from 1998 to 2016 across two generations. It took the place of the rear-wheel-drive S90 as Volvo's flagship sedan.
The first generation (1998–2006) was made available for the 1999 model year. It has since been built at the Torslanda Works in Gothenburg, Sweden, with a few 1999 model year cars for the North American market built at Volvo's Halifax Assembly plant. Unlike most Volvo models, it did not have a station wagon version for its first generation.
The second generation (2006–2016) was released in 2006 as a model year 2007 car. It has an estate version, the third generation of the Volvo V70. In June 2007, the S80 scored the highest "good" rating in the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) crash test performance for frontal, side, and rear impacts, earning it the IIHS Top Safety Pick.
The model was replaced by the second generation S90 in the later half of 2016.

- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE
- Summary: WHILE DRIVING AT SPEED TACHOMETER DROPPED TO 900 RPM FROM ABOUT 3500 WITH AN 18 WHEELER NOT MORE THAN 6 CAR LENGTHS BEHIND ME, NEEDLESS TO SAY IF IT WEREN'T FOR DIVING ONTO THE SHOULDER AS IS DECELERATED RAPIDLY TO 20 MPH IN A MATTER OF SECONDS I WOULD HAVE BEEN REAR-ENDED WITH MY FAMILY IN THE CAR. THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE. VOLVO HAS EXTENDED THE WARRANTY ON SOME OF THE ETMS TO 10 YEARS/200,000 MILES. WHEN I CALLED VOLVO TO ASK IF THIS MODEL WAS PART OF THAT EXTENDED WARRANTY THEY TOLD ME THAT IT ONLY COVERED '99-01' AND THAT THEY WOULD NOT REPAIR IT AS " THINGS BREAK WHEN THEY GET OLD", AND THAT I SHOULD DRIVE IT TO THE SHOP FOR DIAGNOSIS, AT MY OWN PERIL. THEY ALSO INFORMED ME IT WOULD TAKE A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT TO CHANGE THIS. WHY SHOULD IT TAKE A LAWSUIT OR DEATH OF A WHOLE CAR FULL OF PEOPLE TO GET SOMEONE TO TAKE ACCOUNTABILITY FOR USE OF SUBSTANDARD PARTS? I DROVE THE CAR HOME IN "LIMP MODE " AND PARKED IT. TODAY I WENT OUT TO SEE IF IT WOULD RUN AND DRIVE, TO MY AMAZEMENT IT DID, SO I TOOK IT FOR A LITTLE TEST <5 MILES, AND IT DID THE SAME THING AGAIN, THIS TIME I WAS PREPARED. I CHECKED THE CODES AND IT HAD NONE IN THE SYSTEM. CALL ME FOR A FIRST HAND ACCOUNT. [XXX] PARTS OF THIS DOCUMENT HAVE BEEN REDACTED TO PROTECT PERSONALLY IDENTIFIABLE INFORMATION PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6). *TR

- Summary: THE DRIVER'S SEAT WAS ADJUSTING ITSELF RANDOMLY WHILE DRIVING. HOWEVER, THE CONTROLS WOULD NOT RESPOND WHEN I ATTEMPTED TO RE-ADJUST THE SEAT. SEVERAL TIMES WHILE DRIVING, THE BACKREST OF THE SEAT WOULD MOVE INTO A COMPLETELY HORIZONTAL POSITION. OTHER TIMES, THE ENTIRE SEAT (INCLUDING THE BACKREST) WOULD MOVE AS FAR FORWARD AS POSSIBLE, CREATING A MAJOR DRIVING HAZARD. I WOULD HAVE TO PULL OVER AND WAIT, REPEATEDLY ATTEMPTING TO RE-ADJUST THE SEAT UNTIL IT RANDOMLY STARTED TO RESPOND. WHEN I TOOK THE CAR TO A VOLVO DEALERSHIP, THEY COULD NOT DETERMINE ANY REASON OR CAUSE FOR THE PROBLEM. I COULD NOT AFFORD TO REPLACE THE POWER SEAT MODULE AT A COST OF $850 (PARTS & LABOR). THE DEALERSHIP UNPLUGGED THE MODULE AFTER ADJUSTING THE SEAT TO FIT ME, BUT THAT IS NOT A PROPER SOLUTION. A CONSUMER SHOULD NOT BE RESPONSIBLE FOR REPLACING A VEHICLE PART DUE TO FAULTY WIRING, ESPECIALLY ONE THAT CREATES A DRIVING HAZARD ON THE ROAD! *TR

Hey there! I'm excited to share my experience with this 17-year-old car that I bought last summer from craigslist.org. I've been driving it for over 5 months now and have already logged about 7k miles. Can you believe I got it for only $1,600.00? When I bought it, it had only 76,6xx miles on it and a clean CarFax report with no accidents and only 5 previous owners. I know it might seem strange that it had so many owners despite the low mileage, but trust me, this car is a gem! Visually, it's stunning. The paint looks brand new, the wheels are in great condition, and the interior is amazing except for the front passenger seat. Everything works perfectly fine- the windows, air conditioning, heater, defrost, indicators, brake lights, emergency flashers, sunroof, rear-seat head restraints, auto-dimming rear-view mirror, intermittent wipers, and more. I've read some reviews where people complain about the sound system, but I personally find it totally acceptable except for the most 'spirited' listening occasions. The engine is strong, has no leaks, and does not burn oil. I even had my local Volvo mechanic check the transmission for any possible issues, and he found none. I did have to replace one of the front strut mounts, but that's a common issue with these cars. This particular car was purchased new with the optional 17-inch wheels, and I found a set of 4 with 95% of the tread remaining for only $250 (again, from craigslist.org). DMV fees were very low, and so is the insurance. And we all know how legendary Volvo is when it comes to safety, right? This model is no exception. The car drives like a dream! Thanks for reading! The car's steering is very responsive and it feels firmly attached to the road. What I love about this car is how safe it feels, especially in the rain. Even during heavy downpours, it doesn't hint at hydroplaning on the freeway. The front defrost system is beyond capable of providing a clear windshield in any situation. Although the brake pedal is a bit soft, the car is still able to stop safely in any situation. Back in 2002, this car sold for $39,745.00. In 2019, the value is between $1,889 and $3.512 (kbb dot com). If you take a look through listings on any site for used cars, you'll be hard-pressed to find a safe, reliable, fully loaded 4-door sedan comparable to this vehicle for this amount of money. Would you rather have your son or daughter in an old Accord or Camry (which cost more, on average, for a used car), or in this Volvo? Update: I have now driven over 25,000 miles since I bought the car used and it has never failed to start or get me where I'm going. It's a heavy, composed vehicle and I feel safe driving it at and above highway speeds. It's comfortable and dependable. Although repair parts can be expensive (more than a Honda or Toyota but less than a Mercedes or BMW), I like that it's not a Japanese or German car. For a used car, I don't think you can get more vehicle for this amount of money. Just make sure you find one that's been maintained. Remember, the most expensive used car is a cheap used car that's not been regularly serviced.

I drive around 40,000 miles per year, which is equivalent to approximately 140 miles round trip per day. When I was considering purchasing a car, I looked at a 2005 Honda Accord 4dr or Toyota Camry SE, but I couldn't see myself being happy with the seats, radio, or exterior styling. Instead, I decided to look at a certified preowned 2002 Volvo S80 4dr sedan. This car had around 55K miles and came with a 6yr/100k mile warranty. Given the high mileage I put on my car, I felt that buying preowned was the better deal. I was able to get a $40K+ car for half the cost of a new one, and I also got the super comfortable seats and safety design that Volvo is known for. I am extremely happy with my experience, the reliability of the car, and the dealership. I absolutely love my Volvo and hope to drive it for 300,000 miles or more!

Excellent in all regards. A really fun car to own and drive.

This is a great car! It's fast enough, limo quiet, safe and handles beautifully.

The price performance is fantastic, making it one of the best in its class. It is very well built, with low noise and great torque. It's like a Mercedes-Lexus-BMW, but with a price tag that's 10-15K$ less.

The vehicle may be underpowered and the sheet-metal used may not be of the highest quality. Unfortunately, after just one year, the car has many unexplained dents, including two on the roof that make it look like it's buckling. Even the smallest door bang turns into a large dent, and the doorjambs can't seem to be quieted. Additionally, the sunroof is noisy and grinding. On a positive note, I had upgraded interior wood installed by the dealer, which has made a significant difference in the car's appearance. Although the front wheels require weekly cleaning due to heavy brake dust, my wife loves the car. Personally, I wouldn't purchase another until the issues described are corrected. However, it's worth noting that after 31K miles, we have had no mechanical problems.

I had a major safety issue with my car when the left front spindle backing bolt backed out and jammed into the drive shaft three separate times. Despite my attempts to have Volvo fix the issue, they refused to do so. As a result, I made the decision to trade in my car for a BMW 530i just two weeks later.

The car has had some issues with the stabilizers and electrical system, but these were addressed and resolved by replacing the necessary parts. I have also experienced some challenges with the hitch and trailer connection, but these were installed by the dealer. Despite these challenges, Volvo has been responsive in replacing parts at no cost, and I have been satisfied with their service. While the car may require more frequent maintenance than some other models, I still believe it is a reliable and high-quality vehicle.
