2003 Volvo S80 problems

volvo logo

The Volvo S80 is an executive car produced by the Swedish manufacturer Volvo Cars from 1998 to 2016 across two generations. It took the place of the rear-wheel-drive S90 as Volvo's flagship sedan.

The first generation (1998–2006) was made available for the 1999 model year. It has since been built at the Torslanda Works in Gothenburg, Sweden, with a few 1999 model year cars for the North American market built at Volvo's Halifax Assembly plant. Unlike most Volvo models, it did not have a station wagon version for its first generation.

The second generation (2006–2016) was released in 2006 as a model year 2007 car. It has an estate version, the third generation of the Volvo V70. In June 2007, the S80 scored the highest "good" rating in the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) crash test performance for frontal, side, and rear impacts, earning it the IIHS Top Safety Pick.

The model was replaced by the second generation S90 in the later half of 2016.

Common 2003 Volvo S80 problems

The Volvo S80 2003 is known for several common problems that owners have reported over the years. These issues span across various components, including the engine, suspension, transmission, and electronics.

  • Front control arm bushings: The front control arms of the S80 are prone to premature wear, which can cause alignment issues and a squeaking or knocking sound coming from the front of the car. To address this problem, new front control arm bushings should be installed.
  • Steering wheel module (SWM) failure: The SWM on the S80 can be very temperamental and is prone to complete failure, affecting the turn signals, horn, audio buttons, and cruise control. Replacing the faulty module with a new one is the only solution, although this is a technical job that may require professional assistance.
  • Light bulb wear: Premature light bulb wear is a common problem in the S80, particularly with the front and rear exterior lights. To mitigate this issue, it is recommended to use more long-lasting light bulbs, and avoid touching the bulbs with fingers when fitting them.
  • ABS control module failure: The ABS control module is prone to failure on the first generation of the S80, resulting in the ABS warning light appearing on the dashboard. Fitting a replacement ABS control module is necessary to resolve this problem.
  • Unusual smell: An unusual smell inside the car when the engine is running can be a sign of a more serious problem, potentially leading to a massive engine fire. This issue has affected about 70,000 UK cars, and Volvo has issued a recall to address it.
  • Possible fuel leaks, suspension failures, and seatbelt anchorage problems: These issues have been reported in Volvo S80s, and it is crucial to ensure that the necessary work has been done to address them, especially if purchasing a used car.
  • Exhaust heat shield coming loose: Rattles can indicate that the exhaust heat shield has worked loose, although this is not a serious problem.
  • Leaking oil coolers on automatic gearboxes: Low-mounted oil coolers on automatic gearboxes can get damaged by speed bumps, leading to leaks.
  • Rear passenger speaker static: Some owners have reported static from the rear passenger speaker, which can be an annoyance but does not significantly impact the overall performance of the car.
  • Expensive repairs: Several owners have reported experiencing expensive repairs, including a $1000 fuel pump replacement at 43,000 miles and a $800 sensor replacement estimate.

In summary, the Volvo S80 2003 has several common problems that owners have reported, including issues with the fuel system, suspension, electronics, and transmission. Regular maintenance and checking for recalls are essential to ensure the longevity and reliability of this vehicle.

There are still many of these cars and other models & years that I found my research on the web that has had this same problem. I have a 1998 Volvo s70 that appears to be developing the same issue. FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2008-06-02
  • VIN: YV1TS92D531
  • Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE
  • Summary: HI, JUST HAD TO HAVE MY FUEL PUMP REPLACED TO THE TUNE OF WELL OVER A THOUSAND DOLLARS. COST AND PROBLEM FALL IN TO THE "UNREAL" CATEGORY. HARD TO BELIEVE THAT SOMETHING AS SIMPLE AS A FUEL PUMP HAS EVOLVED INTO A PIECE OF EQUIPMENT THAT APPARENTLY AS COMPLICATED AS SOMETHING THAT IS VITAL TO THE LAUNCH OF THE SHUTTLE. OH FOR THE DAYS WHEN A FUEL PUMP WAS ACTIVATED BY THE CAM SHAFT, HELD ON TO THE ENGINE WITH TWO BOLTS, COST FIVE DOLLARS, TOOK ABOUT TEN MINUTES TO REPLACE AND SELDOM FAILED. ACCORDING TO THE STEALERSHIP THAT DID MY WORK, IN ORDER TO GET TO THE FUEL PUMP, THEY HAD TO REMOVE THE REAR SEAT TO GET TO THE FUEL PUMP? I HAVEN'T HAD TIME TO SURVEY THE TOTAL AMOUNT OF DAMAGE THEY DID IN DOING THIS, BUT DO KNOW THAT THE HEADLINER AND STEERING WHEEL ARE COVERED WITH GREASY HAND PRINTS AND AFTER THREE DAYS THERE IS STILL A STRONG ODOR OF GASOLINE IN THE CAR. MY VOLVO IS AN 03 S80 WITH ONLY 45,000 MILES ON IT. IS THIS TYPICAL OF VOLVO DEPENDABILITY AND EXCELLENCE? GUESS I'M GOING TO HAVE TO GO JAPANESE. COMMENTS PLEASE. *TR

  • Date Of Incident: 2007-09-20
  • VIN: YV1TS92D731
  • Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: AFTER PURCHASING A VOLVO S80 IN APRIL 2003 FROM VOLVO NORTH SCOTTSDALE, MY WIFE (WHO DRIVES THE CAR) BEGAN EXPERIENCING A FUEL INJECTION PROBLEM. EACH TIME THE CAR WAS ROUTINELY SERVICED AT VOLVO NORTH SCOTTSDALE, SHE COMPLAINED OF THE PROBLEM, BUT THE DEALER FAILED TO REPAIR IT. AFTER TIRING OF THE DETERIORATING SERVICE QUALITY AT VOLVO NORTH SCOTTSDALE, MY WIFE BEGAN HAVING THE CAR SERVICED AT POWELL VOLVO, TO WHOM SHE CONTINUED TO COMPLAIN OF THE FUEL INJECTION PROBLEM. THAT DEALER ALSO FAILED TO REPAIR THE PROBLEM. WHEN THE WARRANTY EXPIRED, MY WIFE HAD THE VEHICLE SERVICED AT AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC, SWEDISH AUTO WERKS, TO WHOM SHE ALSO COMPLAINED OF THE FUEL INJECTION PROBLEM. AT THIS TIME, THE CAR HAD BEEN DRIVEN 35,990 MILES. BY THIS TIME, SHE WAS ALSO EXPERIENCING AN INTERMITTENT SLOW/LONG CRANK STARTING THE CAR, WHICH WAS THOUGHT TO BE DUE TO A FAILING BATTERY. SHE COMPLAINED OF THIS ALSO TO SWEDISH AUTO WERKS. SWEDISH AUTO WERKS DIAGNOSED THE CAUSES OF THE PROBLEM AS NOT ONLY A FAILING BATTERY BUT ALSO A CRACKED FUEL PUMP HOSE NIPPLE. IN ADDITION TO A NEW BATTERY, IT INSTALLED A NEW FUEL PUMP ASSEMBLY AT A COST OF $821.97. THE CAR NOW RUNS VERY WELL. IN A SUBSEQUENT CONVERSATION WITH ANOTHER VOLVO OWNER, MY WIFE LEARNED AND HAS SINCE CONFIRMED THAT THIS FUEL PUMP PROBLEM HAS BEEN RECURRENT WITH THE VOLVO S SERIES SINCE AL LEAST 2002-03 AND THAT VOLVO KNOWS OF IT. MY WIFE ALSO LEARNED THAT THERE HAS BEEN A "SILENT RECALL" PROMPTED BY THIS PROBLEM--I.E., IF THE PROBLEM IS RECOGNIZED BY A VOLVO DEALER, VOLVO WILL FIX IT AT NO COST TO THE OWNER. NEITHER VOLVO NORTH SCOTTSDALE NOR POWELL VOLVO IDENTIFIED THE PROBLEM DESPITE MY WIFE'S REPEATED COMPLAINTS TO THEM. BY OCTOBER 4, 2007 LETTER AND ATTACHED COPY OF THE REPAIR INVOICE TO VOLVO CUSTOMER CARE CENTER, I REQUESTED REIMBURSEMENT. IN REPLY, VOLVO DENIED MY REQUEST, STATING THAT THERE HAD BEEN NO RECALL. THE DATE BELOW IS WHEN THE REPAIR WAS MADE. *TR

  • VIN: YV1CZ91H831
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: 1. THERE IS A WHOOPING CRANE SOUND WHEN I STEP ON THE FOOT FEED AND THEN RELEASE. THE DEALER SAID IT WAS REPAIRED AND THEN WHEN I DROVE IT HOME IT WAS STILL MAKING THE NOISE. AFTER NO RESPONSE FROM MY COMPLAINT TO THEM I STOPPED THE PAYMENT VIA AE AND HAVE STILL HEARD NOTHING. I THINK I PUT THE WRONG YEAR OF MY VEHICLE IN THE BEGINNING AND IF I TRY TO GO BACK I LOOSE EVERYTHING. IT IS A 2003 XC90 PURCHASED IN 12/02. THANK YOU FOR ANY HELP YOU CAN GIVE. IF YOU CAN'T HELP, PLEASE AT LEAST SEND ME AN EMAIL AND TELL ME SO. THANKS. 2. ANOTHER PROBLEM THAT STARTED IN JULY 2006 IS A KNOCKING NOISE COMING FROM UNDERNEATH THE VEHICLE. AFTER NUMEROUS TRIPS TO THE DEALER I WAS TOLD A NEW BOX FOR THAT PARTICULAR ITEM AND IT WOULD COST $2800.00 TO REPAIR. BUT THEY COULD NOT GUARANTEE THAT WOULD FIX THE PROBLEM. MY XC90 HAD A 4 YR OR 50,000 WARRANTY. THIS PROBLEM STARTED IN JULY 2006 WITH 41800 MILES. I TOOK POSSESSION OF THE CAR IN 12/02 SO MY MATH SAYS THE WARRANTY EXPIRED 12/06 AND THAT MEANS IT WAS STILL UNDER WARRANTY WHEN THIS WAS FIRST NOTICED. I HAVE HAD THE VEHICLE IN AT LEAST EVERY 4 MONTHS FOR SERVICE AND EACH TIME COMPLAINED ABOUT IT. ALSO I HAD IT IN AT LEAST 5 TIMES FROM JUNE THRU JULY 2007 WITH NO SATISFACTION. NOW THEY DON'T EVEN ANSWER MY EMAILS OR RETURN MY PHONE CALLS. I HAVE CONTACTED THE CONSUMER COMPLAINT DEPARTMENT OF VOLVO AND THEY HAVE NEVER ANSWERED ME. I AM AT A LOSS AS TO WHAT TO DO. THIS CAR WAS PURCHASED AT POWER VOLVO OF CERRITOS (THEN IT WAS CALLED VOLVO OF CERRITOS) PLEASE HELP ME! *TR

Negative 2003 Volvo S80 car reviews

  1. Blaze Hane 2024-11-12

I purchased this car primarily for its safety features, but unfortunately, it has not met my expectations. Over the course of a year, I have had to make several fixes, including replacing the driver's seat and addressing issues with the sound system. The car tends to be noisy at low speeds and lacks the power needed to accelerate into traffic. Additionally, my wife finds the steering wheel to be too heavy, and the metal sheet on the rear doors tends to bounce when closing. While I am considering switching to a different car, I do hope that the designers and engineers take note of these issues and make improvements for future models.

I can confidently say that this car was a beautiful and fun ride, even after spending about 3,000$ on repairs. However, after owning it for approximately two months, the car caught on fire while I was driving, which unfortunately resulted in the total loss of the front compartment and the car itself. Although the cause of the fire could not be determined by fire rescue, I would advise caution when driving this car.

  3. Kay Wuckert 2024-09-20

Overall, the car has some good features, but there are some notable problems. Unfortunately, the car failed to start when it was almost brand new, and the dealer asked if I had another set of Volvo keys on the same keychain! It appears that their keys contain a microchip that has caused starting problems if together. Although this was not the problem in my case, they couldn't diagnose the cause. The dealer never mentioned this problem when I bought the car. Additionally, the windshield wipers are weak, and the car is not as good as my old 1997 Saab 9000 in the snow. I have had difficulty making it up some very low inclines with very little snow on the ground. However, the seating is comfortable both in the front and back.

I've been experiencing a lot of issues with my car lately. However, I still love driving it because it handles and brakes great. Unfortunately, I've had to replace the bulbs in my headlights multiple times, my starter is going out, and my motor fan won't shut off, which drains my battery unless I unplug it. Additionally, my driver's window won't roll up and down, the front passenger side seatbelt is locked and I can't get it unlocked, and the lining on the interior is coming off. On top of all that, my engine light is on because of something related to my gas tank cover. Despite all these problems, I still love the look and the way it drives. It's a very clean car that has been well taken care of. I'm not hard on my cars and I don't understand why all these things are happening. Unfortunately, all these issues have occurred within the past 3 1/2 months. It's a bummer that once I get everything fixed, I won't get the money I put into it back. However, I still plan on keeping it. In the future, I would like to get a car with fewer problems that I can afford to fix, as everything on my current car costs a fortune.

Positive 2003 Volvo S80 car reviews

  1. Kennedi Murazik 2025-01-20

This automobile is fantastic and a real surprise. It follows the European sedan tradition of using space efficiently. Despite costing $15-20K less than comparable sedans, it performs just as well. Who would have thought a Volvo could outpace a Honda? The car handles corners with ease and comfort. As a long-time Volvo owner, this is my favorite car yet. We've only driven 3,000 miles so far, but we haven't encountered any issues. I'm a big fan of Volvo and this car is my reward. It's an absolute pleasure to drive!

  2. Jovany Rutherford 2024-11-29

I looked and test drove many cars in the s80 class. It's clear that this car offers more value for your money than the others. The lease specials in Feb '03 are fantastic!

  3. Delaney Haag 2024-11-11

Besides the class-leading safety in this model, Volvo has perfectly balanced performance and comfort in the T6. This car is not only roomier than the BMW 5-series cars, but also has a spacious cabin and trunk. I am thrilled to say that this is my 4th Turbocharged Volvo, and it is the best one yet! I was pleasantly surprised at how reasonable the cost was after all incentives were applied.

  4. Austen Ebert 2024-10-18

After 7 months, I must say I am thoroughly impressed by this car. It is incredibly comfortable to drive and the exterior design really sets it apart from other cars on the road. The interior is also very well laid out and the seats are comfortable even on long drives.

  5. Adrain Harber 2024-08-22

The car is quite comfortable and roomy, with good features for its price. While the base 194 horsepower engine could benefit from more power and torque, it still offers pretty decent gas mileage, which is wonderful. It would be great if the car had standard leather and sunroof, instead of them being optional. Additionally, the wheels and tires should be standard 17 inches, not 16 inches. The suspension is good for comfort, but could use more sportiness and accuracy, like the BMW 5 series. It would also be nice if the car had standard xenon lights, and the interior could use more wood. The instrument panel is too plain and could use some tips from Lexus, BMW, or Audi.
