2005 Volvo S80 problems

volvo logo

The Volvo S80 is an executive car produced by the Swedish manufacturer Volvo Cars from 1998 to 2016 across two generations. It took the place of the rear-wheel-drive S90 as Volvo's flagship sedan.

The first generation (1998–2006) was made available for the 1999 model year. It has since been built at the Torslanda Works in Gothenburg, Sweden, with a few 1999 model year cars for the North American market built at Volvo's Halifax Assembly plant. Unlike most Volvo models, it did not have a station wagon version for its first generation.

The second generation (2006–2016) was released in 2006 as a model year 2007 car. It has an estate version, the third generation of the Volvo V70. In June 2007, the S80 scored the highest "good" rating in the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) crash test performance for frontal, side, and rear impacts, earning it the IIHS Top Safety Pick.

The model was replaced by the second generation S90 in the later half of 2016.

Common 2005 Volvo S80 problems

The Volvo S80, produced from 1998 to 2006, is known for its solid build quality and reasonable reliability. However, as with any vehicle, there are common problems that owners have reported. Here are some of the most frequently mentioned issues with the 2005 Volvo S80, based on complaints from owners:

  • Transmission issues: The transmissions on P2 T6 S80s, including the 2005 model, were known to be unreliable and not long-lasting. This was due to the fact that the 4-speed gearboxes, manufactured by GM, were not robust enough to handle the high power output of the T6 engine (268hp). If you're considering a 2005 S80 with a T6 engine, be aware of potential transmission problems and consider having it inspected by a mechanic.
  • Fuel leaks: Some Volvo S80 owners have reported possible fuel leaks, which can be a major concern due to the risk of fire or other damage. If you're considering a used S80, it's important to have it inspected for any signs of fuel leaks, such as puddles under the car or a strong gasoline smell.
  • Suspension failures: Suspension failures have been reported by some S80 owners, which can affect the car's handling and safety. If you're considering a used S80, it's a good idea to have the suspension system inspected for any signs of wear or damage.
  • Seatbelt anchorage problems: Some S80 owners have reported issues with seatbelt anchorage, which can be a serious safety concern. If you're considering a used S80, it's important to have the seatbelts inspected to ensure that they are securely anchored and functioning properly.
  • Diesel engine problems: If you're considering a diesel-powered S80, be aware of potential issues with starting or black smoke under hard acceleration. These can be signs of more serious problems with the engine or fuel system, and should be inspected by a mechanic.
  • Exhaust heat shield issues: Some S80 owners have reported rattles caused by loose exhaust heat shields. While this is not a major safety concern, it can be annoying and may indicate other issues with the exhaust system.
  • Oil cooler leaks: Leaking oil coolers on automatic gearboxes have been reported by some S80 owners. These can be caused by damage from speed bumps or other road hazards, and should be inspected by a mechanic if you notice any signs of leaks or overheating.
  • Electrical system problems: Some S80 owners have reported issues with the car's electrical system, including problems with the CAN bus and engine control units. These can be difficult to diagnose and repair, and may require the assistance of a specialist .
  • Suspension repair costs: The suspension of the Volvo S80 is not known for its durability, and repairs can be quite expensive. If you're considering a used S80, be aware of potential suspension issues and factor in the cost of repairs when making your decision .
  • Onboard electronics: Some S80 owners have reported issues with the car's onboard electronics, including problems with the power windows, electric sunroof, seats, and steering wheel. These can be difficult to diagnose and repair, and may require the assistance of a specialist .

In general, the Volvo S80 is known for its solid build quality and reasonable reliability. However, as with any vehicle, there are potential issues that owners should be aware of. If you're considering a used S80, it's important to have the car inspected by a mechanic and to be aware of any potential issues that may arise.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-07-11
  • VIN: YV1TR911951
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: When I was closing the passenger door, it did not close tight. So I opened it again and shut it a bit harder. When I shut it harder, the passenger side seat airbag and the top passenger side airbag deployed. If I had been sitting inside the car at the time, I could have been injured as small things exploded inside the car and it filled with a smoky powder. We took it to a Volvo dealership and they inspected it but have not relayed thier findings to me. Even tho I have called several times to find out. They never return my calls. Their was no warning or lights on prior to the incident. I know about the drivers side airbag recall but was wondering if their were other airbag issues they have not told us about? It will cost about $1500 to have the airbags replaced and from what I understand, none of the airbags will work now untill the deployed ones have been replaced. And I think it is a manufacturing issue that has made this problem. I just want to kmow if this has happened to other volvo owners? And if Volvo should be required to fix our airbags.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2013-02-27
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: FUEL LEAK AT TOP OF PUMP UNDER RECALL, INSPECTION AND REPAIR AT NO COST REFUSED BY VOLVO. MY VOLVO S80, 2005 WAS PURCHASED AS A USED VEHICLE IN SAN DIEGO CA FROM THE VOLVO DEALER ABOUT 2 YEARS AGO. THE FUEL LEAK LOCATION WAS DIAGNOSED BY INDEPENDENT SHOP AND THEY CONFIRMED THE PUMP WAS UNDER RECALL. THE INDEPENDENT SHOP RECOMMEND TAKING THE CAR TO THE LOCAL DEALER FOR REPLACEMENT AT NO CHARGE UNDER THE NHTSA RECALL NOTICE. WHEN THE CAR WAS TAKEN TO THE LOCAL DEALER NO INSPECTION WAS PERFORMED AND I WAS TOLD THE RECALL NOTICE DID NOT APPLY TO MY VIN. I REQUESTED THE DEFECTIVE PART RETURNED TO ME AND ONLY THEN VOLVO DISTRICT SAID THEY WOULD PROVIDE THE PART (APPROX $500) BUT WANTED ME TO PAY FOR LABOR (APPROX $250). THEY ALSO WANTED THE DEFECTIVE PUMP RETURNED TO THEM. I REFUSED VOLVO'S OFFER, TOOK PICTURES OF THE DEFECTIVE PUMP AND CONFIRMED IT MATCHED DESCRIPTION IN THE NHTSA RECALL NOTICE AND THE INDEPENDENT SHOP DIAGNOSES. THE PUMP FUEL LEAK IS UNDER THE REAR SEAT WHERE CHILDREN IN SAFETY SEATS ARE EXPOSED TO INTENSE FUMES. EVERYBODY IN THE CABIN IS EXPOSED TO HIGH LEVELS OF FUMES FROM RESIDUE FUEL AT ALL TIMES FROM WHEN THE ENGINE WAS LAST OPERATED. THE DEALER FAILED TO FOLLOW THE RECALL NOTICE PROCEDURE FOR INSPECTION. THE NOTICE DOES NOT LIST A VIN RANGE. IF MY VIN AND/OR PUMP MODEL IS NOT INCLUDED IN THE ORIGINAL RECALL IT SHOULD BE! IT APPEARS VOLVO IS LIMITING THE RECALL SCOPE OR DENYING LEGITIMATE CLAIMS FOR A SERIOUS SAFETY RECALLED ITEM. I HAVE REQUESTED THE DEALER RETAIN ALL PARTS, RECORDS AND DOCUMENT THE ISSUE OF THE FUEL LEAK ON MY VEHICLE. I PLAN ON PICKING UP THE CAR NO LATER THAN MARCH 6 2013 REPAIRED BY VOLVO AT NO COST OR NOT. *TR

  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT AND INCREASE DISTANCE BETWEEN THE B+TERMINAL AND THE STARTER MOTOR SOLENOID BY ADJUSTING THE TERMINAL. THE RECALL BEGAN ON JANUARY 31, 2006. OWNERS MAY CONTACT VOLVO AT 1-800-458-1552.

Negative 2005 Volvo S80 car reviews

  1. Jordy Mante 2025-01-04

At 79,000 miles, this car has unfortunately had some issues. It has required three transmissions and the front struts have broken through normal driving. Additionally, there have been two leaks of transmission fluid, with the second leak requiring the radiator to be removed to replace a hose. The interior design could be improved to make it easier to see traffic behind you. We have owned three Volvos, but unfortunately, this will be our last. Repairs this year alone came to over $4000.

In my experience, the Volvo has not lived up to its reputation for reliability. Despite my initial preference for its exterior style over a Lexus, the car has had major electronic failures every 4-6 months, requiring multiple trips to the dealership and even a visit from a company representative. Unfortunately, it has not been the reliable vehicle we were hoping for on road trips. I have found my older Subaru and Toyota to be more dependable options. It is important to carefully consider all options before making a purchase to ensure satisfaction in the long run.

After conducting thorough research, we decided to purchase the 2004 Volvo S80 due to its reputation for reliability and comfort, which was especially important for me as I am 6'6

  4. Marcos Ward 2024-04-09

I bought my Volvo 8 years ago. Since then, I have had to fix it multiple times. The windows stopped working three times, the motor mount broke, the throttle body needed cleaning, and the lights quit working. In contrast, I have owned three different Toyota vehicles and put over 150,000 miles on each of them without encountering similar issues. Based on my experience, I would not consider buying another Volvo.

Positive 2005 Volvo S80 car reviews

  1. Mavis Ebert 2025-01-05

Overall, I must say that this is the best car I have ever owned. I bought it for Volvo's safety and durability, and it has not disappointed me. It handles very well, and driving it is both easy and fun. Additionally, it is incredibly comfortable.

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with you. A few months ago, I leased a new S80 and I was pleasantly surprised with the deal I got. I had leased an S80 before this one for $500 a month, but this time I was able to get a new one for only $390 a month! I had considered other options like the Acura RL, Lexus GS, and Audi A6, but I found that the Volvo offered the best value for my money. The T6 engine is amazing and the car is incredibly comfortable. Although I didn't think it was worth the extra $150 a month. Thanks for listening!

  3. Hudson Koepp 2024-11-25

This is our second Volvo and we're sold. We love the safety features, fuel economy, 'green' exhaust system, overall comfort and handling, styling, and most of all, the dealer's attention and courtesy.

  4. Gayle VonRueden 2024-11-24

The 6 cyl (non-turbo) moves this full-sized car very well. You'll find yourself looking for excuses to go for drives (or steal it away from your wife & take it to work!). The trunk is also very roomy. Additionally, the safety features are and have always been one of the primary hallmarks of Volvo - they don't come much higher rated.

  5. Federico Klocko 2024-10-27

Exceptional vehicle! It surpassed my expectations. This car has excellent features, along with an outstanding safety system. Everyone should own one.
