Plymouth Voyager is a nameplate for a range of vans that were marketed by the Plymouth division of Chrysler. From 1974 until 1983, the Voyager was a full-size van, sold as the counterpart of Dodge Sportsman (later the Dodge Ram Wagon). Starting with the 1984 model year, the Voyager was marketed as one of the new Chrysler minivan, along with the Dodge Caravan. As a minivan, there were three generations of the Voyager from 1984 until 2000. Following the closure of the Plymouth division in 2000, the Voyager was marketed under the Chrysler brand as a lower-trim version of the Chrysler Town & Country through 2003.

From 1988 through 2016, Chrysler used the Chrysler Voyager name for export-market minivans; during the existence of the Plymouth brand, export-market Voyagers were produced with the body and trim of the Dodge Caravan. Including the Plymouth Voyager and Dodge Caravan with their rebadged Chrysler, Lancia, and Volkswagen variants, the Chrysler minivans collectively rank as the 13th best-selling automotive model line worldwide.

The Plymouth Voyager minivan was assembled by Chrysler at its Windsor Assembly facility in Windsor, Ontario, Canada; from 1987 to 2000, the Voyager was also assembled at Saint Louis Assembly in Fenton, Missouri (North plant from 1987 through 1995; South plant from 1996 until 2000).

The full-size Plymouth Voyager van was assembled from 1974 until 1983 at the Pillette Road Truck Assembly in Windsor, Ontario, Canada, and at the St. Louis North Assembly Plant in Fenton, Missouri.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-08-09
  • VIN: 1P4GH54R7NX
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 1992 PLYMOUTH GRAND VOYAGER. WHILE DRIVING VARIOUS SPEEDS, EXCESSIVE FORCE HAD TO BE APPLIED TO THE BRAKE PEDAL TO STOP THE VEHICLE. THE FAILURE OCCURRED WITHOUT WARNING. LODI CHRYSLER JEEP DODGE RAM (1255 BECKMAN RD, LODI, CA) DIAGNOSED THAT THE ABS PUMP MODULE ASSEMBLY AND BRAKE ACTUATOR ASSEMBLY FAILED. THE PARTS WERE INCLUDED IN A LIFETIME CHRYSLER CUSTOMER SATISFACTION CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 682; HOWEVER, THE PARTS WERE UNAVAILABLE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE AND REFUSED TO HONOR THE CAMPAIGN BECAUSE THEY NO LONGER MANUFACTURED THE PARTS FOR THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2014-10-30
  • VIN: 1P4GH54R4NX
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: THIS VAN IS AFFECTED BY THE 96V099000 NHTSA RECALL, HOWEVER WHEN INQUIRING ABOUT GETTING THE ABS MOTOR REPLACED AT A LOCAL DEALERSHIP I WAS TOLD THAT THE PARTS ARE NO LONGER MADE TO FIX THIS ISSUE. I BELIEVE THAT CHRYSLER HAS A DUTY TO FIX THE BRAKES ON THIS VEHICLE AS DIRECTED BY THE NHTSA, PARTS OBSOLESCENCE DOES NOT ABSOLVE THEM FROM RESPONSIBILITY OR THE NHTSA. IF THE PARTS ARE NO LONGER AVAILABLE I REQUEST THAT CHRYSLER PURCHASE THE VAN BACK FROM ME AND HAVE IT DESTROYED, FIX THE BRAKES ACCORDING TO THE RECALL OR CONVERT THE BRAKES TO THE NON-ABS TYPE. I DO NOT UNDERSTAND HOW CHRYSLER AND THE NHTSA COULD ALLOW BENDIX (THE MANUFACTURER OF THIS RATHER PROBLEMATIC BRAKE SYSTEM) TO STOP MAKING A LIFETIME REPLACEMENT PART. THIS ISSUE CAUSES THE POWER ASSIST TO STOP WORKING, CREATES A HARD PEDAL WHICH MAKES IT IMPOSSIBLE TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE SAFELY. THIS CREATES A CONDITION WORSE THAN A VEHICLE WITH ALL MANUAL BRAKES THAT HAVE NO POWER / VACUUM ASSIST TO BEGIN WITH, WHEN TEST DRIVING THE VEHICLE IT TAKES BOTH FEET PLANTED FIRMLY ON THE PEDAL TO STOP IT. AS I HAVE NOT GOTTEN A SATISFACTORY SOLUTION THAT WAS MANDATED AND ENFORCED BY THE NHTSA, I LOOK FORWARD TO YOUR PROMPT REPLY IN THIS MATTER. *TR

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2012-05-25
  • VIN: 1P4GH54R1NX
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: EXPERIENCED HARD BRAKE PEDAL (LOSE OF BRAKING) AND BRAKE / ABS LIGHTS ILLUMINATED ON THE DASH BOARD. THIS WAS THE SECOND FAILURE IN THE LAST TWO YEARS AFTER APPROXIMATELY 14,000 MILES OF OPERATION SINCE THE LAST REPAIR AND FOR AT LEAST THE FOURTH TIME SINCE WE HAVE OWNED THIS VEHICLE (BOUGHT NEW). PREVIOUS REPAIR INVOLVED REPLACEMENT OF BRAKE ACCUMULATOR, DUAL PRESSURE SWITCH, BRAKE ACTUATOR PISTON ASSEMBLY, AND THE PUMP MOTOR ASSEMBLY, THE LAST TWO OF WHICH ARE SUBJECT TO A LIFETIME RECALL. DEALER REFUSES TO REPAIR/REPLACE WARRANTED PARTS WITHOUT AGREEMENT THAT OTHER PARTS ARE REPLACED AT A COST OF APPROXIMATELY $900. GIVEN THAT IT IS LIKELY THAT WARRANTED PART FAILURES ARE LEADING TO THE FAILURE OF THE OTHER COMPONENTS AND THAT THE LAST REPAIR ONLY LASTED FOR 14,000 MILE WE REQUESTED THAT CHRYSLER COVER THE ENTIRE REPAIR. CHRYSLER REFUSED. IN ADDITION, IT HAS BEEN OUR EXPERIENCE THAT EACH TIME WE HAVE HAD THE BRAKE SYSTEM FAIL, IT HAS INCLUDED THE NEED TO REPLACE OTHER BRAKE SYSTEM COMPONENTS BEYOND THE PARTS SUBJECT TO THE LIFETIME RECALL. THUS IT WOULD APPEAR THAT THE LIFETIME RECALL SHOULD HAVE BEEN EXPANDED TO COVER ALL OF THE COMPONENTS IMPACTED BY THE FAILURE OF THE WARRANTED COMPONENTS. *TR

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE,STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2011-04-12
  • VIN: 1P4GH54RXNX
  • Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE,STRUCTURE
  • Summary: TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 1992 PLYMOUTH GRAND VOYAGER. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 15 MPH, THERE WAS A LOUD NOISE COMING FROM THE VEHICLE. AFTER PULLING OVER SHE NOTICED THAT THE FUEL RAIL WAS FRACTURED AND PARTIALLY HANGING FROM THE VEHICLE. IN ADDITION, THE SLIDING PASSENGER SIDE DOOR WOULD SPORADICALLY COME OFF TRACK AND COULD NOT BE CLOSED PROPERLY. THE DOOR WAS CLOSED USING A CORD. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHERE THEY ADVISED HER THAT THEY WOULD HAVE TO TAKE THE DOOR APART FOR REALIGNMENT. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND THEY OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE, STATING THAT THERE WERE NO RECALLS ON THE VEHICLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 160,000.

  • Summary: TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 1992 PLYMOUTH GRAND VOYAGER. WHILE DRIVING AT 35 MPH, THE CONTACT ATTEMPTED TO USE THE BRAKES BUT THE VEHICLE DID NOT SLOW DOWN. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALERSHIP BUT NO REPAIRS WERE PERFORMED AT THE TIME OF THE COMPLAINT BECAUSE THE PARTS WERE NO LONGER AVAILABLE. AT THAT MOMENT THERE WAS NO HYDRAULIC BRAKE PRESSURE AND IT WAS VERY DIFFICULT TO CONTROL THE VAN. THE VAN WAS TOWED TO MY REGULAR, INDEPENDENT REPAIR SHOP AND THEY CHECKED THE CONDITION AND THEIR DIAGNOSTIC COMPUTER ISSUED A CODED ERROR. I DISCOVERED THAT THIS ABS BRAKE WAS COVERED UNDER AN EXTENDED WARRANTY BY CHRYSLER. I TOOK THE VAN TO A NEARBY CHRYSLER DEALER AND THEY CHECKED. THE ABS LIGHT AND BRAKE LIGHT WERE OUT AT THIS TIME AND THE DEALER CHARGED FOR ONE HOUR, GAVE ME LIST OF PARTS THEY CONSIDERED MAY NEED TO BE REPLACED AND VERBALLY SAID IT MAY COST ABOUT $400 OR MORE TO FIX. THEY DID NOT ASSURE ME THAT A WARRANTY WOULD APPLY. *TR

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC,EQUIPMENT PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2003-07-03
  • VIN: 1P4GH54R3NX
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC,EQUIPMENT
  • Summary: MY 1992 PLYMOUTH GRAND VOYAGER MINIVAN HAS EXPERIENCED RECURRING FAILURE OF THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKING SYSTEM. THE BRAKE SYSTEM WARNING LIGHT AND ABS WARNING LIGHT BOTH ILLUMINATED. ON OCCASION THE SYSTEM RESUMED OPERATION IF THE VEHICLE WAS TURNED OFF OR NOT DRIVEN FOR 2 OR MORE HOURS. IN MARCH OF 2003 A LOCAL GARAGE DIAGNOSED THE ABS RELAY WAS NOT PROVIDING POWER TO THE ABS PUMP. THE RELAY WAS REPLACED - COST $100. DAYS LATER THE SYSTEM FAILED AGAIN. THE PUMP WOULD ONLY OPERATE IF CONNECTED TO DIRECT BATTERY VOLTAGE TO START IT RUNNING. IN LATE APRIL THE ABS PUMP WAS REPLACED BY ANOTHER LOCAL GARAGE COST OVER $500. THE SYSTEM OPERATED ANOTHER 3 WEEKS, AND THEN FAILED AGAIN, COMPLETELY FAILING DURING IN MID-JUNE. THE VAN WAS TOWED TO THE SAME GARAGE. THE TECHNICIAN IDENTIFIED THAT THE ABS RELAY COIL HAD FAILED. THE VAN IS UN-DRIVABLE BECAUSE THE ABS PUMP ALSO SUPPLIES POWER BRAKE PRESSURE. THE VAN WAS TOWED TO CHRIS LEITH DODGE IN WAKE FOREST, NC ON JULY 3, 2003 AND INSPECTED. ON JULY 11, 2003 THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT LET ME KNOW THAT THEY NEEDED THE DISTRICT MANAGER TO MAKE DETERMINATION OF RECALL WARRANTY REPAIR OF THE SYSTEM. JULY 15, 2003, THE SERVICE MANAGER AND DISTRICT MANAGER DETERMINED THAT THE PART THE TECHNICIAN IDENTIFIED AS MALFUNCTIONING (HYDRAULIC ASSEMBLY R-4683398) WAS NOT A PART OF RECALL 96V-099 # 685. THE ABS PUMP IS PART OF THE RECALL AND WAS TO BE WARRANTED FOR LIFE. THE RECALL ALSO STATES THAT REPAIRS DONE EARLIER TO THIS PART WERE TO BE REIMBURSED AS A PART OF THIS RECALL. I AWAIT INFORMATION ON HOW LONG IT WILL TAKE TO OBTAIN AND INSTALL REPAIR PARTS. THE REPAIR ESTIMATE IS $999.84. THE VAN WAS PURCHASED USED FOR $1800. REPAIRS ARE NEARING THAT VALUE. ACCORDING TO COMPLAINTS AND THE ENGINEERING EVALUATION THIS IS A RECURRING PROBLEM. I KNOW THE VAN IS NOT NEW, BUT AT LEAST IT CAN BE SAFE, OR THE PUBLIC SHOULD BE WARNED NOT TO KEEP THESE VEHICLES IN OPERATION IF CHRYSLER WILL NOT HONOR THE TERMS AND SPIRIT OF THE RECALL.

We love using our Voyager as our non-sport utility vehicle! It's perfect for hauling antiques, yard materials, home improvement supplies, and donations to goodwill. When we bought it, the dealer put in a new transmission for free, and since then, the engine and transmission have been working just fine. While it may not be as reliable as a Lexus, Honda, or Toyota, it's still acceptable. The seating is incredibly comfortable, especially with the four captain's chairs, and I love all the cool gauges and features!

Van has been incredibly dependable with very few repairs needed. The most expensive repair was the replacement of the intank fuel pump which cost $525. While I was a little disappointed with the fuel mileage, getting around 20MPG on the road and 17 in town, I have been very pleased with the vehicle overall. The white paint is beginning to peel at the roof area, but there has been no oil consumption at 200,000 miles thanks to regular oil and filter changes every 3-5,000 miles.

I have extensive experience with older vehicles, and I can confidently say that this van is one of the worst I have encountered. It has suffered from engine failure, unfixable ABS issues by Chrysler, abysmal mileage, and transmission noise (even after replacing the transmission). As a result, I cannot recommend this van for any trip over 30 km (20 miles).

We bought this van as a replacement for a Mercury Villager that we really didn't like and had only owned for three months. Despite having over 230,000 miles on the clock (we bought it with around 68,000), we've only had to replace the water pump, brakes, hoses, tailpipe, and one transmission. Regular maintenance and fluid changes have kept this baby running smoothly. It still looks pretty good considering its age and mileage, and unlike many old cars, it doesn't have any broken door locks or knobs. It cleans up nicely.

Hi there! I'm so glad to hear that you've been enjoying your car for 11 years! It sounds like it's been a reliable vehicle that hasn't required too much maintenance. Although the transmission and A/C had some issues, it's great to hear that the van keeps on running year after year. Plus, the spacious interior, smooth drive, and powerful engine make it a joy to drive. Thanks for sharing your experience with us!
