2020 Bmw X1 problems

bmw logo

The BMW X1 is a line of cars produced by German marque BMW since 2009. It is in the subcompact luxury crossover class, and the first-generation X1 was based on the E90 3 Series and offered rear-wheel drive layout as standard. At its introduction in 2009, it was positioned as the smallest SUV in BMW line-up, below the X3 prior to the launch of the smaller X2. The X1 essentially is aiming a wider range of customers due to its smaller size, increased efficiency, and a lower price tag due to the all-wheel drive layout (xDrive) being optional.

The second-generation X1 marked the switch to a front-wheel-drive-based layout using the UKL2 platform shared with the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer and the Mini Countryman. Despite its name, it is now only the second smallest SUV produced by BMW since the introduction of the X2. The third and current generation was released in 2022.

First generation (E84; 2009)

The E84 X1 is the first-generation model and was originally presented as the BMW Concept X1 at the Paris Motor Show in 2008. Development of the vehicle started in 2006 when BMW identified the need for a smaller and more efficient model in its SUV line-up as petrol prices were increasing. Due to the urgent need to produce the vehicle, development and pre-production time was shortened by 40 percent compared to previous X Series models.

It is based on the same platform as the E90 3 Series and features the same 2,760 mm (108.7 in) wheelbase. The X1 is the first BMW X Series to be available in the sDrive trim (two-wheel drive). It was not introduced to the United States until 2012.

In 2013, the E84 X1 underwent a facelift, featuring restyled exterior and interior design elements, as well as the integration of BMW EfficientDynamics on all models. The original X1 sold 820,529 units.

Common 2020 Bmw X1 problems

The BMW X1, a subcompact luxury crossover manufactured by the German automaker, has been reported to have several common problems by its owners. While the X1 has been popular since its introduction in 2009, these issues have been noted across different model years.

  • Engine Problems: The passenger engine mount in the BMW X1 is prone to cracking, which can be a costly job to fix. This component is crucial for fixing the engine of the car firmly to the car frame, so any damage to it can affect the vehicle's performance and safety.
  • AC and Heater Problems: BMW has announced recalls for certain X1 models due to impurities in the high voltage batteries that may cause a short circuit, as well as possible undetected EGR system leaks.
  • Paint Issues: The BMW X1 has also been reported to have paint issues, although specific details about this problem are not provided in the search results.
  • Ride Quality: The BMW X1's suspension can be negatively affected by bumpy and uneven roads, leading to a jittery ride in some circumstances.
  • Infotainment System: The X1's infotainment system has been criticized for being confounding to control, which can detract from the overall driving experience.

These common problems with the BMW X1 can vary in severity and cost to repair, with some issues potentially leading to more extensive damage if not addressed promptly. While the BMW X1 has been praised for its reliability and safety features, these reported issues can impact the vehicle's performance and overall satisfaction for its owners.

POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,BACK OVER PREVENTION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-10
  • Fire: 1
  • VIN: WBXJG9C00L5
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,BACK OVER PREVENTION
  • Summary: I had a series of concerning incidents with my car. The trunk door was getting stuck halfway, but I was able to close it after turning on the engine. I also encountered a malfunction error on the backup camera, a Drive Train warning sign, and the car alarm going off by itself. The most alarming issue was when the car started smoking and then caught fire underneath the hood near the driver's side windshield. Thankfully, my father and I were able to put out the flames with a water hose before calling 911 to report the incident to the fire department. The car is considered a total per Geico Insurance.

SEAT BELTS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-11-09
  • VIN: WBXJG7C04L5
  • Components: SEAT BELTS
  • Summary: I got my BMW X1 in December of 2020 and currently has 21,000 miles. I've notice unusual wear and tear on the driver side seatbelt so I brought it into the dealer but all they said was that it needs to be replaced. I don't think this is a normal wear and tear because as I've said, I only drove this vehicle for 21,000 miles. The tear is expanding and I believe this can be a serious safety issue during an accident or sudden stops. I was concerned if this was an issue to similar vehicles or if it's just my vehicle.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-02-12
  • VIN: WBXJG9C01L5

  • Summary: Check Engine light checked at dealership revealed Fuel in the NVLD System! They had to replace the NVLD, Charcoal canister, and the Tank vent valve. They accused me of overfilling my fuel tank! I am 100% certain that I NEVER overfill fuel whatsoever. I am afraid this may cause other drivers to ignore the problem resulting in vehicle fires! Please investigate further or ask for repair frequency of this problem from BMW. I owned a BMW for almost 20 years and never experienced this problem! Thanks

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-07-01
  • VIN: WBXJG7C07L5
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: On 7/1/22, my Vehicle Alert came on advising that the front brake pads need replacement and to schedule an appointment within 1,000 miles. I called the same day to schedule an appointment with my local dealer. However, the next available date was on 7/13/22. I specifically requested an earlier date, but that was the only available slot they had. I brought my vehicle in on 7/13/22 (alert now says schedule an appointment within 800 miles so i had driven 200 miles) and was given an estimate to replace the front brake pads. On the same day, i get a call from the dealer service advisor that the front rotors also needs replacement as they were damaged due to continued driving with worn down brake pads. They also advised the engine mount was cracked and leaking. My safety concern is that the alert should have came on sooner as I called to schedule an appointment the same day the alert came on but the only available time for almost two weeks later. There should have been a more urgent alert (i.e. replace within 50 miles) as I would have then made separate arrangements immediately. Alternatively, the alert should come on much earlier in the brake pads' wear detection. Instead, I was unknowingly driving my vehicle with dangerously damaged rotors due to the false sense of safety as the alert said schedule appointment within the next 1000 miles and I had only driven 200 miles. This put not only my safety at risk but others on the road as well should my brakes have failed. A crash would have been more dangerous in light of the cracked engine mount and leak. I understand brakes are wear and tear and customer pay but i feel that the alert system design and logic needs to be looked at as non-savvy drivers rely on them to make appointments accordingly.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-09-08
  • VIN: WBXJG9C06L5
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: On Sept 8, 2021, on I-5, North of Marysville, WA, a truck threw a rock through the lower radiator of our X1. We lost all coolant and car was hauled to BMW, Seattle on 9/9/21. On 9/10 service rep Josh Logan advised: "We confirmed that it does not come with a guard, but when you order a new part, that does come in conjunction." and that: "no warranty coverage, as it does not cover damages, so you would have to go through your insurance for that one." We did so and USAA covered the amount above the $1000 deductible. It is unacceptable that the need for the rock shield was clearly a known condition, yet when damage occurred due to it not being installed from new, that the replacement was not covered under warranty. Negative 2020 Bmw X1 car reviews

  1. Mikel Ruecker 2025-01-04

Although the author of this text has had a negative experience with their 2017 X1 sDrive28i, it is important to note that every car is different and experiences may vary. It is unfortunate that the author has had to spend a significant amount of time in the BMW service department, but it is important to remember that BMW has a strong reputation for quality and reliability. While the author has had issues with their brakes and tires, it is important to note that regular maintenance and care can help prevent these issues from occurring. Additionally, while the author has expressed dissatisfaction with the X1's front-wheel drive, it is important to note that the all-wheel drive version may provide a better driving experience. Overall, it is important to consider all factors when purchasing a car and to do thorough research before making a decision.

  2. Favian Wiza 2024-10-08

I recently purchased a brand new car with only 10,000 miles on it. Unfortunately, I had to replace the tires already, which was surprising since they were the Pirelli P7 CINTURATO P7 ALL SEASON RUN FLAT - SIZE: 225/50R17 that came from the factory and had no warranty. Additionally, the backup camera has been giving me some trouble, possibly due to compatibility issues with Apple Car Play. Despite the dealership's efforts, the issue persists. The ride can be a bit rough, but that's to be expected with a mini SUV. Overall, I wouldn't recommend this car as it has had too many issues for a brand new vehicle and the ride quality is not up to par.

  3. Kayley Prosacco 2024-08-26

I've had this car for a week now and I'm feeling a bit of buyer's remorse. During the test drive, I didn't get to drive it for long enough. Although it seemed fine on a short drive, the model I bought is quite stiff and hard to steer. Despite having 220 horsepower, it doesn't feel as powerful as I expected, as it's not very smooth or responsive. Maybe I should have waited for the new Audi Q3 coming out this fall. I wish I had shopped around more and not relied so much on the reviews.

  4. Tristin O'Connell 2024-07-09

This luxury SUV boasts poor AC and heating? Not on my watch. I've shopped twice for tailgate and battery problems, and I can confidently say that this vehicle is top-notch.
