1993 Volkswagen Corrado problems

volkswagen logo

The Volkswagen Corrado is a compact four passenger (2+2), three door, front-engine, front-wheel-drive liftback coupe marketed by Volkswagen from 1988 until 1995, and manufactured by Karmann in Osnabrück, Germany.

Designed by Herbert Schäfer, the Corrado overlapped and eventually superseded Volkswagen's Scirocco model. 97,521 Corrados were manufactured over the seven year production run; about 50,000 of them were sold in the United States.

Overview

The Corrado is a three-door hatchback/liftback with a 2+2 seating layout. The Corrado's floorpan is based on the A2 platform (i.e. Mark 2 Golf/Jetta) and, with the exception of VR6 models, all versions use the subframes, suspension, steering and braking components from the Volkswagen A2 platform model range. The body shell was built by Karmann and was partially zinc plated and galvanized, providing strong rust protection.

The VR6 uses suspension components from the A3 model range, including the rear axle assembly and some parts of the A3's 'plus' type front axle assembly. The subsequent wider front wheel track of the Corrado VR6 necessitated the fitting of new front wings with wider wheel arches and liners along with a new front bumper assembly. Together with a new raised-style bonnet to accommodate the VR6 engine, these body improvements were carried across the model range.

The Corrado is noted for its flush mounted windows and active rear spoiler – which raises automatically when the car exceeds 100 km/h (62 mph) (45 mph or 72 km/h in the North American market), automatically retracts at speeds below 25 km/h (15 mph) or can be manually controlled by the driver.

The name Corrado was derived from the Spanish verb "correr", meaning to run or sprint. Prototypes were named Taifun (German for "Typhoon") but the name was changed prior to release.

  • Summary: AS MY 11 YEAR OLD SON AND I WERE DRIVING SLOWLY, DURING INTERMITTENT COMMUTE TRAFFIC, IN THE SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA, MY 1993 VOLKSWAGEN CORRADO BLEW HOT STEAM AND MOISTURE OUT OF THE VENTING SYSTEM INSIDE THE VEHICLE. WINDOWS SUDDENLY FOGGED UP AND I COULD NOT SEE OUT OF THE WINDOWS UNTIL I WIPED THEM DOWN. AFTER WIPING THE WINDOWS DOWN (WHILE STUCK IN THE MIDDLE OF THE FREEWAY!) AND VENTING THE STEAM OUT OF THE VENTING SYSTEM AND CHECKING COOLANT SYSTEM, I MOVED OVER TO THE FREEWAY SHOULDER. ANY TIME I USE THE HEATER OR VENT FAN, THE VEHICLES WINDOWS FOG UP IMMEDIATELY. THIS LEAD ME TO BELIEVE THAT THERE MIGHT BE A RECALL IN PLACE OR THAT A RECALL COULD BE MADE BY STATING THIS INFORMATION. I HAVE NEVER SEEN ANYTHING LIKE THIS WITH ANY OTHER VEHICLE THAT I HAVE DRIVEN. MY VW CORRADO IS IN GREAT OVERALL CONDITION. IT IS TAKEN CARE OF QUITE WELL. IT DRIVES FINE, BUT I CAN NO LONGER USE THE HEATER OR VENT SYSTEM. I HAVE HEARD, THROUGH VW CLUBS, ETC. THAT RECALLS WERE INITIATED FOR THIS VEHICLE.*AK

Negative 1993 Volkswagen Corrado car reviews

  1. Evans White 2024-07-23

This is the car I always wanted in high school but couldn't afford. After some bad luck with my last car, I stumbled upon the Corrado. At first, I was hesitant because it's a compact car, but to my surprise, my 6'4

  2. Irwin Bruen 2024-01-08

It's important to ensure that door handles on a German Sports Car don't get stuck or break. Unfortunately, the radiator cooling fan failed and had to be replaced by the dealer. It's worth noting that the wiring harness is quite exposed when you open the hood, so there's a risk of it melting and catching fire. Perhaps more insulation could be added to address this issue. On the bright side, the sunroof was fixed, although it did break again later. It's worth keeping in mind that maintenance can be quite expensive, so it may be worth considering a BMW instead. Before making a purchase, it's always a good idea to check for any recalls on the car.

Positive 1993 Volkswagen Corrado car reviews

  1. Maximilian Goyette 2025-01-04

It's a fabulous car! Mine has been untouched by anything I've raced so far. I've got a 2.8 that's been modified to a 3.0 with high compression pistons, polished intake manifold and head, bigger valves, race cams, exhaust, power pulleys, and a chip tuned just to the car, and I get 35 mpg!

  2. Kody Conroy 2024-11-17

I'm a VW addict! I absolutely love the Corrado. Before this, I had a 98 GTI VR6, which was newer and felt a little more solid, but the Corrado has my heart. With TT wheels, H&R coilovers, exhaust, intake, chip, Oettinger body kit, etc., I can't drive anywhere without people taking double looks or pointing at my car. It's definitely a unique and fun car to drive, even if it isn't the fastest or the best value for money on the road.

  3. Braxton Kessler 2024-11-02

The VR6 SLC can be a thrilling ride when driven aggressively, but it's important to be aware of its quirks. Due to its nose-heavy design, it has a tendency to over-steer and swap ends when breaking hard into a turn. However, with a few upgrades such as Konis and Brembos, this car can easily handle its power output of over 220 bHp. Despite some spotty electrical issues and handling problems in its stock form, the VR6 SLC boasts superb fit and finish and a striking appearance. Overall, it's a great value for its price.

  4. Rosendo Hammes 2024-07-26

You'll love the sleek and sophisticated body and interior design, not to mention the beautiful leather interior. The clear and readable dash and upright body position also offer better visibility. Plus, the VR6 engine provides fast acceleration even at high speeds, with 178 torque horsepower. And let's not forget the supreme road handling!

  5. Peter Kreiger 2024-06-21

This is the best car I've ever owned. It's sporty, fast, and comfortable. It puts my V8 muscle/sports cars to shame. If you're looking for fuel economy in a sports car, you might want to rethink your idea of a sports car. Otherwise, it handles unbelievably, and it surprises even the most anti-VW people.
