1992 Volkswagen Corrado problems

volkswagen logo

The Volkswagen Corrado is a compact four passenger (2+2), three door, front-engine, front-wheel-drive liftback coupe marketed by Volkswagen from 1988 until 1995, and manufactured by Karmann in Osnabrück, Germany.

Designed by Herbert Schäfer, the Corrado overlapped and eventually superseded Volkswagen's Scirocco model. 97,521 Corrados were manufactured over the seven year production run; about 50,000 of them were sold in the United States.

Overview

The Corrado is a three-door hatchback/liftback with a 2+2 seating layout. The Corrado's floorpan is based on the A2 platform (i.e. Mark 2 Golf/Jetta) and, with the exception of VR6 models, all versions use the subframes, suspension, steering and braking components from the Volkswagen A2 platform model range. The body shell was built by Karmann and was partially zinc plated and galvanized, providing strong rust protection.

The VR6 uses suspension components from the A3 model range, including the rear axle assembly and some parts of the A3's 'plus' type front axle assembly. The subsequent wider front wheel track of the Corrado VR6 necessitated the fitting of new front wings with wider wheel arches and liners along with a new front bumper assembly. Together with a new raised-style bonnet to accommodate the VR6 engine, these body improvements were carried across the model range.

The Corrado is noted for its flush mounted windows and active rear spoiler – which raises automatically when the car exceeds 100 km/h (62 mph) (45 mph or 72 km/h in the North American market), automatically retracts at speeds below 25 km/h (15 mph) or can be manually controlled by the driver.

The name Corrado was derived from the Spanish verb "correr", meaning to run or sprint. Prototypes were named Taifun (German for "Typhoon") but the name was changed prior to release.

Common 1992 Volkswagen Corrado problems

The Volkswagen Corrado, produced from 1988 to 1995, is known for its handling and driving position. However, like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems.

One of the most prevalent issues is related to the engine, with oil leaks being a common complaint across various models, including the 1.8-liter 8V engine, 1.8-liter 16V engine, 2.0-liter 16V engine, and the VR6 engine. Oil leaks can be caused by various factors, such as worn-out gaskets or seals, and can lead to more severe problems if not addressed promptly.

Another engine-related issue is the timing belt failure, particularly in the 1.8-liter 16V engine and the VR6 engine. Timing belt failure can cause significant damage to the engine, including bent valves and damaged pistons, leading to expensive repairs.

Fuel pump failures are also common in the Volkswagen Corrado, particularly in the VR6 models. Fuel pump failures can lead to starting problems, stalling, and poor engine performance.

Ignition coil failures are another common problem, particularly in the VR6 models. Ignition coil failures can cause misfires, leading to poor engine performance and increased emissions.

Electrical system issues are also prevalent in the Volkswagen Corrado, including problems with the alternator, battery, and starter motor. Electrical problems can cause issues with the car's lights, radio, and other electronics, leading to inconvenience and safety concerns.

The Corrado's suspension can also be prone to issues, especially in the VR6 models. Problems with the suspension can cause the car to handle poorly and can even affect its safety on the road.

Interior issues are also common with the Corrado, particularly with the base model. Owners have reported problems with the seats, door handles, and dashboard.

The Corrado's air conditioning system is known to be problematic, with common issues including leaks and compressor failures.

Regular maintenance is key to keeping the Volkswagen Corrado running smoothly. This includes oil changes, spark plug replacements, and regular inspection of the brakes and suspension. Keeping up with maintenance can help prevent many of the common issues associated with the Corrado.

Negative 1992 Volkswagen Corrado car reviews

Hi there! I see that you've had your car for two months now and it's running great! However, I understand that you're not too happy with the fuel economy and the interior design. While the seats are good, the dash and controls could use some improvement. Thanks for sharing your thoughts with me!

Positive 1992 Volkswagen Corrado car reviews

  1. Brody Maggio 2024-10-11

This Corrado is my 6th VW and 3rd with a VR6. I've always dreamed of owning an SLC VR6 since I was a little girl, and I finally got my hands on this black on velour 1992. It has been great! The car is so solidly built that it doesn't even rattle when I drive it at 100 mph! The VR6 pulls strong, and yes, you're reading the mileage right: 263k! I love the sport seats (they're heated too), and it's fun to show people the speed-sensitive spoiler (which still works!). It's also great to own such a rare VW that has a lot of cachet and nostalgic value. Most people don't even know what a Corrado is or think it's a Scirocco, but those who know the Corrado know greatness! I'm looking forward to more good times with it.

  2. Hillard Bayer 2024-10-05

This is the best car I've ever owned. It's sporty, fast, and comfortable. It puts my V8 muscle/sports cars to shame. If you're looking for fuel economy in a sports car, you might want to rethink your idea of a sports car. Otherwise, it handles unbelievably, and it surprises even the most anti-VW people.

  3. Jordan Wyman 2024-08-12

Many people have asked me if my car is a current year model. I believe that the Corrado is one of the best unknown VW models out there. I have seen many new car owners, especially those who are new to VW, rubbernecking at my car. I can only imagine them thinking, 'Hey! How did I miss that VW on the lot? I would have bought it instead of this!' The ride is smooth, and I think the G60 is better balanced than the VR6 in later models. It is easy to upgrade, has timeless styling, and is good on gas (still getting 26mpg with mods when I stay off the gas). It also has neat features like the MFA computer, two-position sunroof, speed-activated spoiler (just like the Porsches), and BBS wheels. I could go on, but I must say that this is the best VW I have ever owned.

  4. Schuyler Dibbert 2024-03-03

Great car for being built in the early 90's! The overall performance and style are excellent. It's still the best sports car to come from VW today!

  5. Hazle Maggio 2024-02-08

You've got yourself the best car ever owned!
