Volkswagen Corrado problems
The Volkswagen Corrado is a compact four passenger (2+2), three door, front-engine, front-wheel-drive liftback coupe marketed by Volkswagen from 1988 until 1995, and manufactured by Karmann in Osnabrück, Germany.
Designed by Herbert Schäfer, the Corrado overlapped and eventually superseded Volkswagen's Scirocco model. 97,521 Corrados were manufactured over the seven year production run; about 50,000 of them were sold in the United States.
Overview
The Corrado is a three-door hatchback/liftback with a 2+2 seating layout. The Corrado's floorpan is based on the A2 platform (i.e. Mark 2 Golf/Jetta) and, with the exception of VR6 models, all versions use the subframes, suspension, steering and braking components from the Volkswagen A2 platform model range. The body shell was built by Karmann and was partially zinc plated and galvanized, providing strong rust protection.
The VR6 uses suspension components from the A3 model range, including the rear axle assembly and some parts of the A3's 'plus' type front axle assembly. The subsequent wider front wheel track of the Corrado VR6 necessitated the fitting of new front wings with wider wheel arches and liners along with a new front bumper assembly. Together with a new raised-style bonnet to accommodate the VR6 engine, these body improvements were carried across the model range.
The Corrado is noted for its flush mounted windows and active rear spoiler – which raises automatically when the car exceeds 100 km/h (62 mph) (45 mph or 72 km/h in the North American market), automatically retracts at speeds below 25 km/h (15 mph) or can be manually controlled by the driver.
The name Corrado was derived from the Spanish verb "correr", meaning to run or sprint. Prototypes were named Taifun (German for "Typhoon") but the name was changed prior to release.

Common Volkswagen Corrado problems
The Volkswagen Corrado, produced from 1988 to 1995, has received praise for its sporty design and handling. However, like any car, it has had its share of common problems reported by owners. Here are some of the most frequently mentioned issues:
- Engine Coolant System Failure: Many Corrado owners have reported issues with the engine coolant system, including leaks, blown head gaskets, and cracked cylinder heads. These problems are often caused by the car's complex and somewhat fragile coolant system design. Regular maintenance and inspections can help prevent these issues, but they can still be costly to repair.
- Electrical Issues: The Corrado's electrical system has also been a source of frustration for many owners. Common problems include faulty sensors, blown fuses, and malfunctioning climate control systems. These issues can often be intermittent and difficult to diagnose, making them particularly frustrating for owners.
- Suspension and Steering Components: The Corrado's sporty handling comes at a cost, as many owners have reported issues with suspension and steering components. These include worn out bushings, leaking struts, and broken tie rods. These issues can affect the car's handling and safety, and can be expensive to repair.
- Transmission Problems: Some Corrado owners have reported issues with the car's transmission, including slipping, jerking, and difficulty shifting. These problems can often be traced back to worn out synchronizers, clutches, or other transmission components.
- Interior Quality Issues: The Corrado's interior has been praised for its design and functionality, but some owners have reported issues with the quality of the materials used. These include worn out seat upholstery, cracked dashboards, and rattling interior panels.
- Rust and Corrosion: Like many cars of its era, the Corrado is susceptible to rust and corrosion, particularly in areas like the wheel wells, rocker panels, and door sills. Regular washing and waxing can help prevent rust, but once it sets in, it can be difficult and expensive to repair.
These are just a few of the common problems reported by Volkswagen Corrado owners. While these issues can be frustrating, they are not uncommon for cars of this era and can often be addressed with regular maintenance and repairs.
Is the VW Corrado a good car?
Widely lauded as one of VW's best driver's cars for its handling and driving position, the Corrado is well on the way to classic status, aided by the exclusivity of a relatively high price when it was new, thanks to its specialist construction by Karmann.
How rare is a VW Corrado?
Designed by Herbert Schäfer, the Corrado overlapped and eventually superseded Volkswagen's Scirocco model. 97,521 Corrados were manufactured over the seven year production run; about 50,000 of them were sold in the United States.
Is the VW Corrado a classic?
Without a doubt the VW Corrado is a classic of the future especially in South Africa as there is less than 10 in the country. The car makes a great sound and is fast. Even though the ride is not the best it is still a great car and a head turner.
How many miles per gallon does a Corrado VR6 get?
Its fuel economy measured under the previous test system was 27 - 35 mpg.

I'm a VW addict! I absolutely love the Corrado. Before this, I had a 98 GTI VR6, which was newer and felt a little more solid, but the Corrado has my heart. With TT wheels, H&R coilovers, exhaust, intake, chip, Oettinger body kit, etc., I can't drive anywhere without people taking double looks or pointing at my car. It's definitely a unique and fun car to drive, even if it isn't the fastest or the best value for money on the road.

It's 100% fun to drive! The options are way ahead of their time and the body lines look like they belong to a 2000 vehicle. If you're considering buying one, I say go for it!

The VR6 SLC can be a thrilling ride when driven aggressively, but it's important to be aware of its quirks. Due to its nose-heavy design, it has a tendency to over-steer and swap ends when breaking hard into a turn. However, with a few upgrades such as Konis and Brembos, this car can easily handle its power output of over 220 bHp. Despite some spotty electrical issues and handling problems in its stock form, the VR6 SLC boasts superb fit and finish and a striking appearance. Overall, it's a great value for its price.

This Corrado is my 6th VW and 3rd with a VR6. I've always dreamed of owning an SLC VR6 since I was a little girl, and I finally got my hands on this black on velour 1992. It has been great! The car is so solidly built that it doesn't even rattle when I drive it at 100 mph! The VR6 pulls strong, and yes, you're reading the mileage right: 263k! I love the sport seats (they're heated too), and it's fun to show people the speed-sensitive spoiler (which still works!). It's also great to own such a rare VW that has a lot of cachet and nostalgic value. Most people don't even know what a Corrado is or think it's a Scirocco, but those who know the Corrado know greatness! I'm looking forward to more good times with it.

This is the best car I've ever owned. It's sporty, fast, and comfortable. It puts my V8 muscle/sports cars to shame. If you're looking for fuel economy in a sports car, you might want to rethink your idea of a sports car. Otherwise, it handles unbelievably, and it surprises even the most anti-VW people.

Hi there! I see that you've had your car for two months now and it's running great! However, I understand that you're not too happy with the fuel economy and the interior design. While the seats are good, the dash and controls could use some improvement. Thanks for sharing your thoughts with me!

It's important to ensure that door handles on a German Sports Car don't get stuck or break. Unfortunately, the radiator cooling fan failed and had to be replaced by the dealer. It's worth noting that the wiring harness is quite exposed when you open the hood, so there's a risk of it melting and catching fire. Perhaps more insulation could be added to address this issue. On the bright side, the sunroof was fixed, although it did break again later. It's worth keeping in mind that maintenance can be quite expensive, so it may be worth considering a BMW instead. Before making a purchase, it's always a good idea to check for any recalls on the car.
