1990 Volkswagen Corrado problems
The Volkswagen Corrado is a compact four passenger (2+2), three door, front-engine, front-wheel-drive liftback coupe marketed by Volkswagen from 1988 until 1995, and manufactured by Karmann in Osnabrück, Germany.
Designed by Herbert Schäfer, the Corrado overlapped and eventually superseded Volkswagen's Scirocco model. 97,521 Corrados were manufactured over the seven year production run; about 50,000 of them were sold in the United States.
Overview
The Corrado is a three-door hatchback/liftback with a 2+2 seating layout. The Corrado's floorpan is based on the A2 platform (i.e. Mark 2 Golf/Jetta) and, with the exception of VR6 models, all versions use the subframes, suspension, steering and braking components from the Volkswagen A2 platform model range. The body shell was built by Karmann and was partially zinc plated and galvanized, providing strong rust protection.
The VR6 uses suspension components from the A3 model range, including the rear axle assembly and some parts of the A3's 'plus' type front axle assembly. The subsequent wider front wheel track of the Corrado VR6 necessitated the fitting of new front wings with wider wheel arches and liners along with a new front bumper assembly. Together with a new raised-style bonnet to accommodate the VR6 engine, these body improvements were carried across the model range.
The Corrado is noted for its flush mounted windows and active rear spoiler – which raises automatically when the car exceeds 100 km/h (62 mph) (45 mph or 72 km/h in the North American market), automatically retracts at speeds below 25 km/h (15 mph) or can be manually controlled by the driver.
The name Corrado was derived from the Spanish verb "correr", meaning to run or sprint. Prototypes were named Taifun (German for "Typhoon") but the name was changed prior to release.

Common 1990 Volkswagen Corrado problems
The Volkswagen Corrado, produced in the early 1990s, is a rare and unique car that has garnered a cult following among car enthusiasts. However, like any vehicle, it is not without its common problems, particularly the 1990 model year. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues with the 1990 Volkswagen Corrado, based on complaints from owners:
- Engine issues: The 1990 Corrado was available with two engine options: the 2.0L 8v and the supercharged G60. Both engines have been reported to have problems, with the G60 being particularly notorious for its supercharger's tendency to grenade.
- Parts availability: Due to the car's age and rarity, finding replacement parts for the 1990 Corrado can be challenging and expensive. Many owners have reported swapping out the G60 engine for the more reliable VR6 engine, which is more readily available.
- ABS issues: The Corrado's anti-lock braking system (ABS) has been reported to have problems, particularly in the 1990 model year. These issues can range from minor glitches to complete system failures, making it difficult or impossible to stop the car safely.
- Maintenance requirements: As with any older car, the 1990 Corrado requires regular maintenance to keep it running smoothly. However, due to its age and complexity, this maintenance can be more involved and expensive than with other cars. For example, the car's seals and gaskets may need to be replaced, and the supercharger's belts and pulleys may need to be inspected and replaced regularly.
- Drivability issues: Some owners have reported that the 1990 Corrado can be difficult to drive, particularly in traffic or at low speeds. This is due in part to the car's heavy and complex drivetrain, which can make it feel sluggish and unresponsive.
In summary, the 1990 Volkswagen Corrado is a unique and rare car that has garnered a loyal following among enthusiasts. However, it is not without its common problems, particularly with the G60 engine and ABS system. Additionally, the car's age and rarity can make it challenging and expensive to maintain, particularly when it comes to finding replacement parts. As with any older car, potential buyers should be prepared for the possibility of significant maintenance and repair costs, as well as the challenges that come with owning a rare and unique vehicle.
Are Corrados reliable?
Volkswagen is famous for the durability of its engines and the Corrado's four- and six-cylinder units are no exception. Look after them, with regular servicing and cambelt or timing chain replacements, and they should go on to very high mileages.

This car has been the best car I have ever owned. It has never left me stranded or broke down for that matter. Even at 16 years old, it is still fast and handles great! It gets 25 MPG in the city and 30-33 on the highway. I highly recommend getting the G-Charger rebuilt every 100,000 miles. There are many clubs that keep the car young. It is just as great as it was when new. Five stars in my book for sure! *****

I owned a Corrado for three years, but unfortunately it was out of commission for more than a year. Despite this, I still regret selling it to this day. As a car enthusiast, I have yet to drive a car that has made me feel more connected to the road or happier than the Corrado. Currently, I have a Nissan Sentra SE-R, but it doesn't compare. I am excited to announce that by 2/15/03, I will be the proud owner of a new car. I have been searching for a car that embodies the spirit of the Corrado, and I have narrowed it down to the Golf 1.8 litre turbo, the Audi TT 180 H.P. FWD, and the Mini Cooper S. I am leaning towards the Audi, but I will take my time to make the right decision. Thank you for reading!

This VW Sports car is a real gem that often goes unnoticed. In the United States, it was available with either a supercharged 4-cylinder G60 or a 6-cylinder VR6. I personally loved my Corrado and often wish I still had it.

This is a really cool car! The design is just as impressive as its performance, and it's amazing how much attention it gets from people!
