Common 2020 Toyota Tundra problems
Based on complaints from owners of the 2020 Toyota Tundra, several common problems have been reported:
- Rodents Eating Soy-Based Wiring: One of the most widespread complaints is rodents chewing through soy-based wiring in the Tundra, attracted by the smell. This can lead to electrical shorts and damage, with repair costs ranging from $30 to $3,000 depending on the severity of the damage. Owners are advised to take precautions to keep rodents out of the engine compartment.
- Paint Chipping on Front Bumper: Some owners have reported paint chipping on the front bumper within the first 10,000 miles of driving. To prevent this, some opt for paint protection film, costing around $550. Repairing the chipped bumper involves repainting, which can cost approximately $1,000.
- Excessive Front Brake Pad Wear: Tundra models used for towing heavy loads may experience excessive wear on the front brake pads. Replacing the front brake pads costs around $250, while new front rotors are approximately $400. This issue is common in trucks that frequently tow heavy trailers.
- Fuel Pump Recall: The 2020 Toyota Tundra is subject to five recalls, with one of the most serious being related to the fuel pump potentially failing. Toyota offers free replacement of the fuel pump assembly for affected models, ensuring safety and reliability.
- Infotainment System Malfunctions: Some owners have reported issues with the infotainment system, including malfunctions during calls on CarPlay, screen freezing or pixelation, and problems with connected services, remote start, and head unit functionality. These issues can impact the overall user experience and may require replacement of components.
These problems, although reported by some owners, are relatively minor compared to other full-size trucks. Regular maintenance and addressing these issues promptly can help ensure the longevity and reliability of the 2020 Toyota Tundra.

STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-14
- VIN: 5TFAY5F14LX
- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: The sunroof shattered while driving down the freeway. No vehicles near or overpasses near. The shade was closed so the glass fell on it not on my head or passengers that could have been present. Sounded like a loud pop. Then I heard wind noise. The glass is blown upward, not downward. I am 40 year auto technician and own my own shop. Its my personal truck I bought new. Has never had any issues at all. This is a defect of some sort. My thought is, since I never use it. The seals aroung the glass bound in the roof opening, thus binding it where it finally flexed and shattered.
FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-03-03
- VIN: 5TFEY5F17LX

The contact was able to pull to the shoulder of the roadway, where the vehicle failed to restart. The check engine and traction control warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer or an independent mechanic. The vehicle was not repaired. After investigating the failure, the contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 20V682000 (Fuel System, Gasoline) however, the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 34,000.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-12-06
- Crash: 1
- VIN: 5TFAY5F16LX
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: I was driving in a 25 MPH zone approaching a red light preparing to stop. I had increased the pressure on my brake pedal and then my foot slipped of the pedal just seconds before I ran into a truck that was stopped at the red light. After further investigation I found out that the brake pedal pad has been substituted by Toyota Manufacturing. My 2020 Tundra was purchased new and has 8,800 miles on it. The petal pad is made from a PVC plastic material as stated on the bottom of the pad. There are no part #s on the pad which is suspicious that this is not a Toyota pad. The PVC material is very slippery, especially if the surface was wet. Come to find out that my 2023 RX 350 has the same brake pad. Both of these pedal pads will be replaced immediately from Toyota. Please Note. I could not upload any of the documents that you had requested. Something is corrupted with the web page that asks for upload files??????
FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-02-25
- VIN: 5TFAY5F1XLX
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: NOTE: Toyota has confirmed this issue, but is unable to resolve this. When the SOS button is pressed, the DCM module is supposed to send the proper VIN number and location to the call center. The call center does not receive the proper VIN number and pulls up the wrong person / location. In my case, if an emergency occurred, they would send emergency assistance to a vehicle located in another state entirely. This is not because the wrong owner is assigned to their system. They can find my vehicle VIN with the proper owner information in their system. The issue is that the DCM module (or other system) is actually sending the wrong VIN to their system. The Toyota SOS call center says to see the dealer and the dealer says they are unable to fix this. If this is not isolated to just my vehicle, this could cause a loss of life if emergency assistance never arrives at the proper vehicle location.
SEATS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-02-09
- VIN: 5TFDY5F12LX
- Components: SEATS
- Summary: The headrests on the seats slip out of place very easily. It is available for inspection on request. In case of accident, the headrests may fly off the seat very easily, with failure to prevent whiplash injury. The problem has not been confirmed by a dealer or service center. The vehicle has not been inspected by anyone but me, the owner. There are no warning lamps, messages, or other symptoms of the problem. The problem was there when I bought the vehicle in 2022.

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2020-07-01
- VIN: 5tfdy5f19lx
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: Air conditioning compressor partially seizes if air conditioning is turned on while driving and when air conditioning knob is on at time engine is started. Makes very loud noise. When driving, and it occurs, truck will slow suddenly as if the brakes were applied until compressor engages. Dealer mechanic says it sounds like the compressor clutch engaging. Said nothing wrong. Have left truck with dealer several times and they say they cannot replicate the issue. I’ve recorded the sound several times and have played that to them. They hear it but say that they have to prove that is what is happening. They refuse to replace the compressor. Vehicle is not safe to drive when this happens. This has occurred since truck was purchased brand new.

- Summary: Vehicle stalled and lost power at approximately 45 mph. Warning lights activated and "Not ready to drive" message was displayed. Vehicle has had 3 other similar episodes all resulting in the vehicle losing power at high speed. Vehicle was towed to local Toyota service dept. where they said it generated a code for rough idling - low fuel. They did no repairs and offered no explanation. Three miles from the dealership the Tundra died in traffic. The safety of my family was certainly at stake and had my wife been driving the vehicle she likely couldn't have steered the vehicle to safety. These are not low speed failures, but rather high speeds.

STEERING,SUSPENSION,WHEELS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2020-12-01
- VIN: 5TFHY5F11LX
- Components: STEERING,SUSPENSION,WHEELS
- Summary: I bought a 2020 Tundra in mid year of 2020. By December 2020 I started to notice a strong vibration in the steering and from the front end between the low speeds of 20-30 mph and between 60-70 mph. The hotter the vehicle gets the more vibration occurs. Now my alignment seems off and curves to the left when trying to drive straight. I have taken it in to Alamo Toyota and Red McCombs in San Antonio on many occasions with similar problems but all they are doing is balancing and rotation of tires. I have sent the dealership videos of the vibration but they indicate it’s normal. This certainly does not appear normal and is now more of a safety issue. Not sure what else to do!

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2020-10-07
- VIN: 5TFAY5F19LX
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: I ACCELERATED FROM A STOP MAKING A RIGHT TURN IN A NORMAL MANNER TO KEEP SAFELY IN FRONT OF ONCOMING TRAFFIC, I HAD NO POWER ALTHOUGH I KEPT PUSHING THE ACCELERATOR. MULTIPLE LIGHTS FLASHED ON THE DASH. I COASTED TO THE SHOULDER OF THE ROAD. AFTER I STOPPED, ALL THE LIGHTS ON THE DASH HAD GONE OUT BUT THE ENGINE WAS STILL RUNNING. IT RESPONDED NORMALLY AFTER THAT. DEALERSHIP SAID A COMMUNICATION CODE SHOWED BUT WAS NOT RELATED TO MY ISSUE. I HAD THREE OTHER "LOSS OF POWER INCIDENTS" SINCE ALL AT LOW SPEED, EITHER STARTING FROM A STOP OR ATTEMPTING ACCELERATION AFTER A TURN. THE YELLOW TRIANGLE FLASHED THOSE TIMES BUT TRAFFIC DID NOT ALLOW ME TO KEEP PUSHING ON ACCELERATOR. AFTER A SHORT COAST POWER RETURNED. DEALERSHIP REPORTED NO CODE. EXPERIENCE SIMILAR TO DESCRIPTION OF BEHAVIOR OF VEHICLES IN TOYOTA FUEL PUMP RECALL. I BELIEVE IT IS THE FUEL PUMP. DEALERSHIP AND TOYOTA CUSTOMER SERVICE TELL ME I MUST DRIVE IT UNTIL IT "FAILS" AND SHOWS A CODE. SAFETY ISSUE, ACCIDENT WAITING TO HAPPEN.
STEERING,SUSPENSION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-12-29
- VIN: 5TFUY5F19LX
- Components: STEERING,SUSPENSION
- Summary: WE PURCHASED A BRAND NEW TUNDRA AND FROM THE MINUTE WE DROVE HOME THERE SEEMED TO BE A BOUNCE OR VIBRATION LIKE RUNNING OVER RUMBLE STRIPS IN THE FRONT END. WE THEN NOTICED THE BED WAS MOUNTED TO THE PASSENGER SIDE BY ABOUT A HALF AN INCH WHICH TO ME TELLS THEY DIDN'T DO A VERY GOOD FINAL CHECK BEFORE IT LEFT THE FACTORY. WE TOOK IT TO THE SHOP AND THEY TRIED FOUR DIFFERENT TIRES AND THE MECHANIC STATED IT ACTUALLY MADE THE VIBRATION WORSE. EACH OF THREE TIMES IT WAS IN THE SHOP THAT THEY TRIED TO RECTIFY THE SITUATION THEY RE ALIGNED THE TRUCK. I WONDERED WHY EACH TIME WITHOUT MUCH DRIVING AND NO OFF ROAD DIVING IT WAS OUT OF ALIGNMENT THREE TIMES WITHIN ONE OR TWO MONTHS. AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC I HAD A CASUAL CONVERSATION WITH SAID IF THEY DON'T FIND AND FIX THE ACTUAL MECHANICAL PROBLEM SUCH AS A BAD CV JOINT IT WILL GO OUT OF ALIGNMENT AS SOON AS YOU DRIVE OUT OF THE SHOP. THE SAFETY ISSUE THAT MAKES IT VERY SCARY TO DRIVE IS THE TRUCK WANDERS OR FLOATS TO THE RIGHT WHILE DRIVING OR BRAKING AND AT TIMES WHEN BRAKING THE STEERING WHEEL TURNS RIGHT SEVERELY BY ITSELF WHILE THE TRUCK CONTINUES TO TRAVEL STRAIGHT. THE MORE YOU DRIVE AND THE WARMER EVERYTHING GETS THE WORSE IT GETS. IT WILL EVEN DRIFT RIGHT FROM THE WRONG SIDE OF THE ROAD PROVING IT IS NOT DUE TO THE CROWN OF THE ROAD. IT WILL TRAVEL COMPLETELY RIGHT FROM THE FARTHEST POINT LEFT. THE SERVICE MANAGER STATED HE FELT WHAT WE WERE DESCRIBING BUT THAT IT MIGHT BE A CHARACTERISTIC OF THAT TRUCK AND WANTED SPECIALISTS FROM TOYOTA TO COME TO THE SHOP TO TRY TO LOCATE THE EXACT CAUSE RATHER THAN THROWING PARTS AT IT AND NEVER LOCATING THE ACTUAL PROBLEM. TOYOTA HAS NOT OFFERED ANY ASSISTANCE TO HIM OR US AS OF YET. WE CAN NOT DRIVE THIS TRUCK WITHOUT FEELING WE ARE IN DANGER. WE OWNED A 2015 TUNDRA PRIOR THAT HAD NO PROBLEMS AT ALL. UPON RESEARCHING WE ARE NOT THE ONLY PEOPLE EXPERIENCING THESE EXACT ISSUES.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2020-07-07
- VIN: 5TFDY5F1XLX
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: WHEN WEATHER GETS WARM (100F+), IT WILL OFTEN TAKE A FEW SECONDS TO START THE CAR. IT CRANKS OVER, BUT WON'T CATCH. WHEN WEATHER GETS TO 110F, IT WOULD FAIL TO START AFTER IT HAS BEEN DRIVEN, THEN PARKED. WAIT 90 MINUTES, AND IT WOULD STARTS AGAIN. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE, BECAUSE WHEN WEATHER IS 110F+, IT IS VERY VERY UNCOMFORTABLE WAITING FOR A TOW TRUCK (THEY ARE USUALLY SUPER BUSY ON A HOT DAY) OR WAIT 90 MINUTES PLUS IN 110F+ WEATHER. TOYOTA HAS REFUSED TO FIX IT, AS THEY SAY THEY NEED TO WAIT FOR A 110F+ DAY TO DUPLICATE THE ISSUE,

Hey there! Why don't you take a look around?
-
I'm so glad to hear that you had a great experience and that you're greatly satisfied with the truck!
-
You'll love the V8 sound and the roomy, comfortable seats. Plus, the towing capability and 4 wheel drive capability make it a reliable choice. On the downside, the V8 fuel efficiency could be better and it lacks built-in generator/110 outlets. Additionally, the infotainment system has had some minor issues.
-
I really like everything about this vehicle, but unfortunately it doesn't have the best mileage and it's not able to tow a 3 horse slant trailer. When I tried to tow my trailer, the back of the vehicle squatted down quite a bit. I made sure to let the salesman know that I needed to be able to pull my horse trailer, but unfortunately it required an extra expense to get an air bag. I'm a bit disappointed about that.
-
I love it!

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share some feedback on the new truck. I've noticed that it doesn't drive as straight as some of the other trucks out there, like the F150, Chevy, or Ram. Even the Honda Ridgeline seems to drive straighter without constant fine tuning. I've had to make constant micro adjustments while driving, and even after getting a replacement truck, I'm still experiencing the same issues. If you've driven an F150, you'll definitely notice the difference in the Tundra. Other RV tow people or those who take long highway drives will know what I'm talking about. It may not be as noticeable in the city, but on long drives, it's very apparent. Thanks for listening!

I can understand your frustration with the fuel economy of the Toyota Tundra. It seems like every other pickup truck on the road gets substantially better fuel economy. While the Tundra does have a tried and true engine, I agree that with all the technology we have, something could be done to improve its fuel efficiency.

Hey there! First of all, I want to mention that I'm not particularly loyal to any brand. I usually go for the one that offers the best value for money in terms of features and reliability. So, I decided to lease a 2020 Tundra SR5 CrewMax with the TRD package to see if it was the right fit for me before investing almost $40k in a new truck. The test drive went well, and I was impressed by the power and smooth ride. The back seat is incredibly spacious, although it might be a bit too much for my needs. I ended up going for a 27-month, 27k mile lease due to the almost $4,000 in rebates they had going on at the time. Before making my decision, I did some research on the Tundra, and unfortunately, I have to agree with some of the negative reviews I read. Let me start with the interior. It's not the best, especially for a truck that costs almost $40,000 US. The door cards are thin, the seats are boxy and uncomfortable over extended periods of time, and the shifter is the same as the Camry's, Corolla's, and 4Runners that Toyota has been using for over two decades. However, the big touch screen radio is a nice feature, although the navigation and Apple CarPlay apps never seem to work correctly, and you're constantly required to install updates. On a positive note, I was happy to find out that Toyota now offers remote start for every vehicle. Unfortunately, this feature is controlled through an app that they charge you $10 a month for after the first year of use. The app doesn't work 70% of the time to remote start my truck, and the mileage and distance to empty features are always off. The app also crashes constantly. In my opinion, Toyota should go back to the drawing board if they want their customers to dish out $120 a year for remote start. The truck currently uses an older 6-speed transmission, which shifts smoothly without any issues. However, this does come at a cost of an average of 14.2 mpg. Personally, I drive 54 miles a day to work and back at an average highway speed of 76 mph, and I have yet to see close to 15 mpg. This is disappointing, especially when compared to Chevy, Ford, and Ram's 1/2 ton pick up trucks, which are starting to see well over 20 mpg. It would be great if Toyota could step up to the plate and invest in improving their outdated technology. If Toyota offered better fuel economy, a 6.5' bed option with a few inches taken out of the crewmax, and higher-end interior finishes, I would definitely consider purchasing a Tundra for the long haul. Until then, my money will be better spent exploring the tried and true 6-speed 5.3L Silverado or the bulletproof 5.0L Ford F150.
