Common 1999 Toyota Tundra problems

The Toyota Tundra, introduced in 1999, is a popular pickup truck known for its ample cargo space, comfortable ride, and reliability. However, like any vehicle, it has its share of problems. Here are some common issues found in the first-generation Toyota Tundra (1999-2006):

  • Faulty Fuel Pump: The 4.7-liter V8 engine in the Tundra is prone to having fuel pump issues. Symptoms include a loud humming noise coming from the engine bay, a check engine light on the dashboard, and a small increase in fuel consumption. If not addressed promptly, this issue can lead to more severe engine problems.
  • Radiator Coolant Mixing with Oil: In some cases, a failing radiator can cause coolant to penetrate the engine's oil circuit, leading to the gearbox failing. Symptoms include gear slip and a pink foam on the transmission oil dipstick. If detected in time, a radiator swap, along with a complete cooling system and transmission oil replacement, can solve the problem. However, if the truck is driven for an extended period with coolant mixing with oil, extensive damage can occur, requiring a complete gearbox rebuild or replacement.
  • Transmission Issues: The Tundra's transmission can experience problems, especially in the 2006 model. The shift solenoid might go bad, causing the vehicle to shift erratically, stop shifting, or stop driving altogether. Replacing this part should cost under $400. However, there is a more serious problem with the vehicle’s engine that can lead to unexpected acceleration. At least six car crashes have been linked to this issue, which has no obvious identified cause. This is a major safety hazard and requires close inspection from drivers.
  • Rusting Problems: Rusting is a common issue in the Tundra, affecting the undercarriage and paint. In some cases, it can lead to structural integrity issues, causing parts to fall out of place. If there's frame damage, drivers may need to replace the vehicle entirely.
  • Air Pump Failure: The 2007 model has a problem with the air pumps in the fuel system. Poorly performing pumps negatively impact the engine’s performance. The cost of swapping out the pumps typically falls somewhere between $1,000 and $3,000.
  • Electrical Problems: Some Tundra models, especially the 2008 and 2016 models, have reported electrical issues, such as malfunctioning radios and problems with the starter and alternator. These issues can be expensive to fix, with each replacement typically costing between $800 and $1,000.
  • Steering Problems: The 2011 model has steering problems related to failing racks and pinions. This can affect the power steering, causing difficulty turning the wheel or a grinding noise when you do turn it. Unfortunately, it can cost close to $3,000 to replace this part.
  • Excessive Oil Consumption: The 2011 model also has an engine problem where it consumes oil excessively, requiring Tundra owners to replace their oil far more often than is necessary. Although individual oil changes aren’t very pricey, repeated refills can add up fast.

It is essential to address these issues promptly to prevent further damage and ensure the safety of the vehicle. Regular maintenance and inspections can help identify these problems early on and save owners from costly repairs.

  • Components: TRAILER HITCHES
  • Summary: EQUIPMENT DESCRIPTION: THIS RECALL IS FOR TRAILER TOWING WIRE HARNESS CONVERTERS INSTALLED BY DEALERS OR FOR INSTALLATION ON 1999-2000 TOYOTA TUNDRA AND TACOMA VEHICLES. THE CONNECTORS INTEGRATE THE VEHICLE'S TAIL LIGHTS, BRAKE LIGHTS, AND TURN SIGNAL LIGHTS WITH THOSE EQUIPPED ON THE TRAILER, ARE DEFECTIVE. AFFECTED PART NUMBERS ARE: PT207-34000, PT207-34002, PT207-04981, AND PT214-04985. IN THE TUNDRA VEHICLES, THE CIRCUITRY UTILIZED IN THE CONVERTER WAS INADEQUATE TO PROPERLY MANAGE VEHICLE AND/OR TRAILER-SIDE VOLTAGE SPIKES. IF THE CONVERTER IS EXPOSED TO A VOLTAGE SPIKE, IT MAY CAUSE AN ELECTRICAL SHORT OR OPEN CIRCUIT WITHIN THE CONVERTER. IN THE TACOMA VEHICLES, DUE TO DEFICIENT WATERPROOFING AND IMPROPER INSTALLATION LOCATION OF THE CONVERTER, WHICH IS MOUNTED IN THE LOWER PORTION OF THE TAILGATE CAVITY OF THE VEHICLE, AN ELECTRICAL SHORT CIRCUIT WILL OCCUR IF WATER ENTERS THE CONVERTER HOUSING.
  • Consequence: AN ELECTRICAL SHORT OR OPEN CIRCUIT CAN CAUSE A FAULT IN THE CONVERTER AND A NON-OPERATIONAL CONDITION OF THE TRAILER LIGHTS. IF THE VEHICLE IS DRIVEN WITHOUT TRAILER LIGHTS, IT MAY BE DIFFICULT FOR OTHER DRIVERS TO SEE THE TRAILER, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL NOTIFY THE CUSTOMERS AND INSTALL A REDESIGNED TRAILER TOWING WIRE HARNESS CONVERTER FREE OF CHARGE. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN AUGUST 27, 2001. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT TOYOTA AT 1-800-331-4331.
