Common 1993 Volvo V90 problems

The Volvo V90, introduced in 1993, is known for its reliability and durability. However, like any vehicle, it can experience certain common problems. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues with the 1993 Volvo V90, based on owner complaints and expert analysis:

  1. Tailgate Interior Panel Failure: The interior tailgate panel on many Volvo wagon models, including the V90, can break away from the tailgate, leading to a loose panel that interferes with the tailgate lock/latch function. This issue can be resolved with a $8.95 kit and about 30 minutes of time, which is significantly cheaper than the $200+ replacement cost from a dealership.
  2. Engine Oil Leaks: The large rubber washer under the oil filler cap can harden and fail over time, causing oil leaks. This issue can be prevented by replacing the oil cap seal at every other oil change, which costs only 80 cents.
  3. Odometer Gear Failure: The small plastic gear that drives the odometer and trip meter functions on 1993-1997 850 models can crack and fail, resulting in intermittent or complete loss of odometer/trip meter function. Replacing this gear can cost over $1000 at a dealership, but a kit is available for under $50 for DIY installation.
  4. Fuel Door Hinge Failure: The plastic gas cap door hinge on many Volvo models, including the V90, can fail at around 60,000 miles, leaving the gas door hanging from the side of the vehicle. An upgrade version is available for less than the original Volvo replacement, and can be easily installed with common hand tools.
  5. ABS Control Module Failure: The ABS control module on many 1993-2000 850, S70, C70, and V70 models can fail, causing the ABS warning lamp to illuminate. This issue can be caused by an internal failure of the module, and can be resolved with a rebuilt ABS Control Module that is a fraction of the price of a new one.
  6. Upper Engine Mount Failure: Beginning with the 1993 850, the upper engine mount can fail, causing excessive engine movement and noise. This issue can be resolved by replacing the mount with an updated design that is less prone to failure.
  7. Coolant Leaks: The engine block on many Volvo models, including the V90, can develop coolant leaks due to porosity or failure to change the coolant regularly. This issue can be resolved by replacing the engine with a remanufactured or rebuilt unit.
  8. Transmission Problems: The automatic transmission on many Volvo models, including the V90, can experience overheating and failure due to a lack of cooling or other issues. This issue can be resolved by replacing the transmission with an updated or remanufactured unit.
  9. Infotainment and Electrical Issues: Many newer Volvo models, including the V90, can experience software problems and other electrical issues that can affect the infotainment system and other vehicle functions. These issues can be resolved with software updates and other fixes.
  10. Brake Issues: Many Volvo models, including the V90, can experience brake squealing and other issues due to wear or other problems. These issues can be resolved by replacing the brake pads, rotors, or other components as needed.

It's important to note that while these issues are common, they do not necessarily affect all Volvo V90 models. Regular maintenance and inspections can help prevent many of these problems, and many of them can be resolved with relatively simple repairs or replacements.

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,EQUIPMENT PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2010-05-20
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING,EQUIPMENT
  • Summary: TWO YEARS AGO, I REPLACED MY 1993 VOLVO V90 RADIATOR WITH A NEW VOLVO RADIATOR. IT STARTED LEAKING AT THE SEAM A MONTH AGO. THE RADIATOR IS OUT OF WARRANTY SINCE IT IS OVER 12 MONTHS. I WENT TO THE DEALER TO COMPLAIN. THEY SAID THAT THEY SEE THIS PARTICULAR PROBLEM WITH MANY VOLVOS. I WILL EVENTUALLY HAVE TO REPLACE THE RADIATOR. FOR NOW IT LEAKS ONLY A LITTLE BIT OF WATER BUT EVENTUALLY IT COULD HAVE A LARGER LEAK AND THUS OVERHEAT AND DESTROY MY CAR'S ENGINE. *TR
