Common 2000 Toyota Tundra problems

The Toyota Tundra, manufactured between 2000 and 2006, is known for its reliability, but it is not without common issues that owners have reported. Here are some of the most common problems with the Toyota Tundra 2000, based on complaints from owners:

  • Cracked Exhaust Manifolds or Broken Mounting Bolts: The mounting hardware, particularly the bolts, can rust and break over time, causing the exhaust manifolds to develop cracks. The most common symptom of this issue is a ticking noise that can be heard after a cold start, usually for the first 30 seconds or so. When replacing any of these parts, don’t forget also to swap out the gaskets.
  • Secondary Air Pump Failure: These components help heat up the catalytic converter faster when starting the engine, reducing emissions and improving fuel consumption on cold starts. Specifically, on the 4.7-liter V8, these pumps are prone to fail. One sign of this issue is a loud humming noise coming from the engine bay. Also, this can be followed by a check engine light on the vehicle’s dashboard and a small increase in fuel consumption.
  • Radiator Leaks on Automatic Transmission Models: The cooling hoses that run from the gearbox to the main radiator’s top tank can leak, causing the radiator to malfunction. This issue is more common in automatic transmission models and can lead to overheating and engine damage if not addressed promptly.
  • Timing Belt Failure: The timing belt is a crucial component of the engine that can fail over time, especially if not replaced at the recommended intervals. Failure of the timing belt can cause serious engine damage, so it is essential to replace it as recommended by Toyota .

It is important to note that while these issues are common, they do not affect all Toyota Tundra 2000 models. Regular maintenance and inspections can help prevent these issues and ensure the longevity of the vehicle.

STEERING,SUSPENSION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-09-21
  • VIN: 5TBRT3416YS
  • Components: STEERING,SUSPENSION
  • Summary: Lower ball joints must be replaced under a recall. Toyota has told me to contact you to look into it for me and to ask them to recall the part in question for my vehicle. My vehicle is a 2000 Tundra. Models from 2001-06 had a recall for lower ball joints. My truck has the exact same faulty part numbers as the later models. Part numbers are: 43340, 43330 for left and right. This part failing leads to catastrophic failures that causes the entire front end to fall to the ground and the wheels to smash into the fender wells. My truck has very low mileage and is starting to show signs of this failure. My biggest concern is safety especially with an older vehicle. A quick search on the internet will show you this happening to countless other 2000 tundras. This vehicle has been well cared for but this doesn’t fall under routine maintenance when the part has these known issues. My case number with Toyota is under my name [XXX] and the file number is [XXXXXXXX]. Thank you and feel free to reach out to me with more questions if you need to via email: [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

SUSPENSION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-03-21
  • VIN: 5TBBT4418YS
  • Components: SUSPENSION
  • Summary: I pulled out of my bank's parking lot driveway making a right turn and the lower left ball joint failed and broke off causing the left front wheel assembly to collapse. The truck slid to a stop and blocked both the driveway and roadway. Police arrived shortly afterwards and made a report. Truck was not able to move on it's own and had to be towed to a repair shop. Broken ball joint inspected and then replaced by my mechanic. Further damage occurred to the left front fender and drivers door from the wheel assembly slamming into the fender. Front fender damage caused the drivers door to jamb shut. The damaged fender had to be pried back to release the door so it could open. (fender and door not repaired) Fortunately I was alone and not injured if I had been driving at highway speeds I would have received serious injuries/death and possibly loosing control of vehicle causing possible injuries/death to others. No warning lights/messages were visible before or during the incident and the only symptom I observed was a slight creaking noise right before it happened.

Also found out that I should be thankful it didnt go off or I may have been injured by a discharge of schrapnel??Found several victims of that. My wife takes a blood thinner and often goes with me to town, but now shes not going to be able to safely ride in her own vehicle anymore?? This reminds me of how CPS drops the ball and just lets kids die before they ever do anything. I will be doing alot more with my pen as my sword my video as my witness,I loved my tundra but this is more way more dangerous than my 1990 truck with basic mechanics. If you have a tundra or other vehicle that is dangerous ,speak out about it,get an attorney,Save SOMEONES LIFE.These are dangerous airbags,no doubt in my mind. Ps Our truck is 100% unmodified other than tire changes. Now a death trap, until this is resolved

Negative 2000 Toyota Tundra car reviews

I have experienced brake problems with my second Toyota pickup since day one. Despite having three sets installed, Freehold Toyota claims that this is normal and was unable to provide me with the phone number for the zone rep. Additionally, I have heard a ticking noise when starting the vehicle in cold weather, which I believe to be a manifold problem. Although I contacted Toyota directly, they informed me that there are no recalls related to this issue. I am aware that other 2000 Tundra owners have experienced similar problems. While I am interested in purchasing a new Tundra, I am hesitant due to these issues. It is unfortunate that Toyota does not take responsibility for their mistakes. However, I remain confident in finding a solution to these problems.

After driving about 6000 miles, my truck started shaking whenever I stopped. I took it back to the dealer who did a complete brake job. It drove great for another 8000 miles, but then the shaking started again. I have had 3 new rotors, 2 new drums, and 2 new front calipers, including the last time when they installed the updated brakes, just before the warranty ran out. Unfortunately, it still shakes when I stop. The dealer tells me that there is nothing they can do since it has all the latest updates for the brakes. Additionally, I have had issues with the exhaust manifold leaking, and the check engine light has come on 4 separate times for various emission problems that have cost me over $900 in total.

Although the first model year had some shortcomings, Toyota has been working hard to improve the quality of this truck. The interior and suspension have been updated to reduce squeaks and rattles. The rear end spider gears have been reinforced to prevent teeth from breaking off, and the axle seals have been improved. The transmission has also been adjusted to shift more smoothly. While the fuel mileage and cruising range may not be the best in its class, Toyota has been making strides to improve these areas as well. The brake problem has been a challenge, but Toyota is committed to finding a solution. Overall, this truck has a lot of potential and I am confident that Toyota will continue to make improvements to make it a reliable and high-quality vehicle.

The 2000 Tundra did not meet my expectations in terms of reliability and quality. Despite having to undergo frequent brake work and spending thousands of dollars on other repairs, I had to pay an additional $1,600 to replace the cracked exhaust manifolds at only 60,000 miles. It appears that there may have been an issue with the engineering, manufacturing, or installation of the vehicle. Although the manufacturer only offered to comp the parts, I ultimately decided to sell the Tundra and purchase a higher quality truck, a GMC.

  5. Geoffrey Barrows 2024-07-03

I purchased this truck brand new, but unfortunately experienced some issues within the first year. The wiring harness located under the spare tire burned off, and the front drive housing was not properly tightened, causing the threads to strip and requiring the 4WD to be replaced. Despite the dealership's attempt to fix the issue, it occurred again, leading me to seek the help of a back yard mechanic who was able to successfully replace the front drive once more. Additionally, I encountered some trouble with cracked manifolds. It may be worth checking the rear bumper, as it could potentially be rusted off. Overall, while I have had some difficulties with this Toyota, I remain confident in its capabilities and look forward to addressing any future issues that may arise.

Positive 2000 Toyota Tundra car reviews

  1. Janick Ritchie 2025-01-09

Before purchasing my Tundra, I owned a Ford 150 and paid approximately $3000 less than what I paid for the Tundra. However, over the long term, the Tundra outperformed the Ford 150 in every aspect. I am thoroughly enjoying the performance of my Tundra and have had to spend very little money on repair bills over the past seven years. I have made sure to follow all the mileage requirements and as a result, my truck looks and runs as well as it did on the day I drove it off the lot. I plan on keeping this truck for another seven years.

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to let you know that I bought the car with 30k miles and now it has 60k. I'm happy to report that it's been running great! The only issues I've had are with the CD player skipping and the brake pedal squeaking when depressed. Other than that, it runs smoothly, just like when I first bought it.

  3. Noah Wyman 2024-10-19

You've got yourself a very reliable and stable vehicle with excellent towing capacity and great vision. I'm glad to hear that you haven't had any mechanical problems and that the vehicle is still tight.

  4. Kristoffer Lowe 2024-10-15

Wow, it's amazing to hear that your truck has over 130k miles and still runs like a champ! It's great to know that you haven't had any problems with it, even after beating it up. Your loyalty to the Tundra is admirable and it's clear that you take good care of your vehicle. I noticed that you made some minor changes to improve its performance and appearance, which is really cool. Thanks for sharing your experience with us!

  5. Pietro Konopelski 2024-09-18

I've owned several pickup trucks from different brands including Chevy, Ford, Dodge, and Toyota. In my experience, the Tundra is the best option for light-medium duty use. While it may not have as much rear seat room as some other trucks, it excels in virtually every other category. Additionally, it has proven to be more reliable than other trucks I've owned. It's important to be aware of biased opinions from pro-domestic truck fans who may unfairly criticize the Tundra. As an objective owner of both a Tundra and a 2002 Silverado, I can confidently say that the Tundra is easier to drive and feels more in control. Unfortunately, my Silverado has already had two major issues.
