STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-04-30
  • VIN: 5TBBT44103S
  • Components: STRUCTURE
  • Summary: In October 2024, my truck's frame exhibited significant rust, a defect that aligns precisely with a previous recall on this model. The rust has spread to critical parts, making the vehicle unsafe to drive. This directly threatens the safety of my son, who relies on this truck for transportation. The rust compromises the frame's integrity, risking structural failure and potential loss of vehicle control. This defect was not previously flagged by warning lamps or messages and was only recently discovered through visual inspection. This issue has been documented in the past and is consistent with a recall initiated a year ago. This recall specifically cited frame rust as a critical defect, and my vehicle is one of those affected models. Given the safety concerns, the severity of frame rust, and the recall history, the frame needs immediate replacement. This action is crucial to ensure my son's safety and prevent potentially life-threatening incidents on the road.

  • Summary: On 4/19/2024 I arrived for an appointment at Corwin Toyota of Bellvue, Nebraska for inspection of my vehicles known recall of the frame due to excessive rust and potential failure due to a faulty manufacturing process. My vehicle is a 2003 Toyota Tundra SR5, Access Cab. Upon arrival, the service representative, and later corroborated by his manager, refused to inspect my vehicle stating "work had already been done on my frame". That is not true. I am the original owner of said vehicle and had it inspected in approximately 2010 after being informed of the recall, likely at a dealership in Denver Colorado where i was residing at the time. At that time was informed vehicle frame did not have excessive rust and NO work was done. The vehicle was purchased in Colorado Springs from Corwin Toyota (same dealership franchise company?), in 2003. Since then, the vehicle has lived in Nebraska and Iowa for most of its existence where salt is used on roads extensively in the winter. I was informed by the service representative at the dealership they will not look at it as they show it has already had repairs done to the frame as I stated. This is false. No work has been done on my vehicles frame at any point and is now experiencing significant frame rust. At some point, maybe at inspection in 2010, maybe later, that some work had been done making the frame ineligible for future inspection or repair or replacement. I am sure Toyota and its agents, Toyota dealerships, are highly motivated to exclude as many vehicles associated with this frame recall as possible. I am certain I am not the only one experiencing this fraud on the consumer. Please investigate whom allegedly did work on my frame, when, and what specifically. I expect the ability to have my frame legitimately inspected and actual repairs or replacement of effected part(s) as resolution. I will be contacting the manufacturer but expect the same run around without your direct involvement. Thank you in advance.

SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-06-23
  • VIN: 5TBJN32153S
  • Components: SUSPENSION,STRUCTURE
  • Summary: The frame on this truck is completely rusted. There are several holes and cracks in the frame. You can pull chunks of the rusted frame off with your fingers. It is unsafe to drive and is a hazard to other drivers There are many photos online of this model of truck that have broken in half when the frame has failed. There are stories of people who are driving this vehicle and it breaks in half while on the highway causing injury. I took it to our local mechanic in June who said this truck is unsafe. I contacted the Iowa Attorney General's office and made a complaint. They put me in contact with Toyota's corporate office who referred me to their Brand Experience Center. They said it had to be evaluated by a Toyota dealer. I took it to the original dealer who sold this vehicle - Wilson Toyota in Ames Iowa- on September 27, 2022. Their service center says the frame needs replaced. They said they would not pay for any repairs. They said this truck had two safety recalls to replace the frame but they said they expired in 2012. I spoke to Toyota's Brand Experience Center again on the 27th and was told that my truck did not have any rust on it when it was taken in for the recall. Nothing was done to this vehicle when it was taken in for the recall repairs. There are many posts on Toyota forums that describe the same thing happening to other owners of this truck. - They are unaware of this condition of their truck frames until they bring it in to a reputable mechanic. The attached photos of this truck show the upper body is in good shape. But the frame is falling apart.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-09-24
  • VIN: 5tbbt44153s
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: I just bought a 2003 toyota tundra 4wd v8 in Feb 2022 totally unaware of any recalls or frame rust or anything even closely related! After 6 months of owing this vehicle I had the wheel bearings replaced n mechanic told me my frame has so much damage due to rust n corrosion that it is eating through parts of my frame, he mentioned that toyota did recalls etc on this n I immediately called Toyota and told them along with doing research on this matter, I was told everything expired etc n nothing can be done! Well previous owner had took it in 2012 to have rust proofing done underneath n entire frame, that was just 10 years ago! Well toyota ways recall was done, apparently the remedy didnt work or my frame wouldn't look this bad 10 years later !so I believe that is a defective remedy and since I bought the vehicle knowing nothing, and do to the safety issues related too this as serious injury and or death can occur, I believe that they should replace my frame as they admitted to using inferior metal to build these and therefore leading too all these issues! Using inferior metal should make the part (frame) a defective part as well! Bottom line is iam driving a vehicle that can cause me n my family along with everyone on the road serious injury or death! They tried to fix the problem with rust proofing n by doing that in 2012 there is no way my frame should be in this.condition , therefore I should be entitled to a new remedy related to recall since the remedy the used was insufficient n defective regardless I'd it expired or anything! I also have alot of pictures of frame n the amount of rust n corrosion! Can you please let know a way too send these pictures to you from my phone! Thank you

  • Summary: Frame is rotten. Recently purchased truck from a private party. Did not notice frame rust at time of purchase. It is bad. Can fit more than a marble through the hole in picture. Read up on it online. Common problem. Upon going underneath truck all frame is decaying. It appears it may have previously been sealed. Which may have cracked away and trapped moisture in just making problems worse. On top of that one thread I read stated guy took his truck to dealer and they told him by law they could not let him leave due to rust issue. Mine is an 2003 Toyota Tundra sr5 access cab 2wd terminator edition. Please help. I was also able to look up on Toyota website under owners and found a shop stated not safe to drive or even lift in November of 2020. And since then truck has only had about 700 miles put on. 120 miles was from guy driving it to me to sell to me. I’m now worried if I drive this in it’s current state that at any time it could break and cause an accident.

  • Manufacturer: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing
  • Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:PASSENGER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE
  • Summary: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2010-2016 4Runner, 2003-2006 Tundra, 2003-2013 Corolla, 2009-2010 Corolla Matrix, 2004-2005 RAV4, 2002-2007 Sequoia, 2011-2013 Sienna, 2008-2012 Scion xB, 2008-2009 Lexus IS-F, 2007-2012 Yaris and Lexus ES350, 2010-2017 Lexus GX460, 2002-2010 Lexus SC430, 2006-2012 Lexus IS250 and IS350 and 2010-2015 Lexus IS250C and IS350C vehicles. These vehicles had their driver or passenger frontal air bag inflators previously replaced under a prior recall using inflators of the same design. The inflators may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to high absolute humidity, temperature and temperature cycling.
  • Consequence: An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
  • Remedy: Toyota will notify owners. Depending on the vehicle model, dealers will replace the front driver inflator, front passenger airbag inflator, the airbag assembly, or the front passenger airbag sub-assembly and inflator. The recall began November 20, 2019. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-888-270-9371 or Lexus customer service at 1-800-255-3987. Toyota's numbers for this recall are J0A, J0B, and J0C. Lexus' numbers for this recall are JLI, JLJ, and JLK.
2018-12-12
  • Manufacturer: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing
  • Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:PASSENGER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE
  • Summary: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2002-2005 Lexus SC and Toyota Sequoia, 2003-2005 Toyota Corolla and Tundra, and 2003-2007 Pontiac Vibe vehicles. These vehicles are equipped with certain air bag inflators assembled as part of the passenger frontal air bag modules used as original equipment or replacement equipment. In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the passenger frontal air bag, these inflators may explode due to propellant degradation.
  • Consequence: An inflator explosion may result in sharp metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
  • Remedy: Toyota will notify the Toyota and Lexus owners. General Motors will notify the Pontiac Vibe owners. Depending on the vehicle model, dealers will replace the front passenger air bag inflator with an alternate inflator, or replace the air bag assembly that includes an alternate inflator, free of charge. The recall began January 23, 2019. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-888-270-9371, Lexus customer service at 1-800-255-3987 or Pontiac customer service at 1-800-762-2737. Toyota's numbers for these recalls are J0A (Zone A Toyota), J0B (Zone B Toyota), J0C (Zone C Toyota), JLI (Zone A Lexus), JLJ (Zone B Lexus), and JLK (Zone C Lexus). Note: This recall includes vehicles that have had their air bag previously replaced under an earlier air bag campaign.
2015-05-13
  • Manufacturer: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) notified the agency on May 13, 2015 that they are recalling certain model year 2004 Sequoia vehicles manufactured August 18, 2003, to August 19, 2004, and 2003-2004 Tundra vehicles manufactured March 18, 2003, to August 25, 2004. On June 16, 2015, Toyota expanded the recall to include an additional 1,270,468 vehicles, including model year 2002-2003 and 2005-2007 Sequoia, 2005-2006 Tundra, 2003-2007 Corolla, 2003-2007 Corolla Matrix, 2003-2007 Pontiac Vibe and 2002-2007 Lexus SC vehicles. This is to address a safety defect in the passenger side frontal air bag inflator which may produce excessive internal pressure causing the inflator to rupture upon deployment of the air bag. This recall addresses both the passenger side frontal air bags that were originally installed in the vehicles, as well as replacement air bags that may have been installed as replacement service parts. A replacement air bag may have been installed, as one example, if a vehicle had been in a crash necessitating the replacement of the passenger side frontal air bag.
  • Consequence: In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the passenger's frontal air bag, the inflator could rupture with metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants potentially resulting in serious injury or death.
  • Remedy: 2003-2004 Corolla and Corolla Matrix vehicles that are recalled under both 15V-043 and 15V-285 are under a Do Not Drive advisory. Owners of these vehicles are advised not to drive their vehicles until the recall remedy has been completed. Toyota will notify their owners. Pontiac Vibe owners will be notified by GM. Dealers will replace the front passenger air bag. The recall began on July 13, 2015. Toyota owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331. Pontiac owners may call 1-800-762-2737. The inflators in the front passenger air bags are susceptible to rupture in the event of a crash necessitating the deployment of the front passenger air bag.
  • Consequence: In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the passenger's frontal air bag, the inflator could rupture with metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants potentially resulting in serious injury or death.
  • Remedy: 2003-2004 Corolla and Corolla Matrix vehicles that are recalled under both 15V-043 and 15V-286 are under a Do Not Drive advisory. Owners of these vehicles are advised not to drive their vehicles until the recall remedy has been completed. Toyota will notify their owners. Pontiac Vibe owners will be notified by GM. Dealers will replace the passenger side front air bag, free of charge. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331. Toyota began the recall on July 13, 2015. Pontiac Vibe owners may contact GM at 1-800-762-2737. GM began the recall on June 29, 2015. NOTE: This recacll supersedes recall 14V-655 in its entirety. For vehicles located in the U.S. states not listed above, please see Toyota recall 15V-285 which covers all other U.S. states.

Negative 2003 Toyota Tundra car reviews

Hey there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to address some of the concerns that Edmounds brought up. It's true that the interior trimmings can come across as a bit chintzy, and the front seat may not be the most comfortable. Additionally, the rear cab room is a bit limited. However, I still believe that this is a great car overall and definitely worth considering. Let me know if you have any questions!

  2. Jerrod Ferry 2024-07-10

I purchased my truck back in July 2003 and have had a few issues with it since then. Firstly, I had to get the rear seals on the back of the X-tra cab fixed due to rain water entering the cab. Secondly, the fuel filler tube had to be replaced because the Check Engine light kept coming on. Thirdly, the paint on the driver's side door wore away and I had the entire door and front of the X-tra cab repainted at a local body shop. The dealer kindly offered to pay for half of the repair, but I declined as I suspect there may be future problems with it. Unfortunately, the other paint (salsa red pearl) is peeling off of the truck. Fourthly, the factory Dunlop tires were horrible. Lastly, I found the X-tra cab to be uncomfortable and not up to the standard for a Toyota. However, the drivetrain has been excellent so far. Overall, it has been a bit of a bumpy ride, but I'm still happy with my truck.

  3. Carleton Bahringer 2024-06-24

The steel wheels are rusting at 3000 miles, despite the truck not being used in adverse conditions. Additionally, there is a major cabin vibration at 70mph that the dealership has been unable to fix, despite changing the drive shaft, one rim, one tire, and offset balance of tires three times. As a customer who paid extra for the Toyota name, I expected a higher level of quality. However, I am confident that a solution can be found to address these issues.

Wouldn't it be great if Lexus made trucks that were affordable? Well, you're in luck! Check out this option for only 28K...

If you're looking for a full-size truck for off-roading, this is the one to get. I've taken it off-road several times and the build quality really shines through - it's incredibly sure-footed, even in the loosest sand in the Arizona sand washes. Mine is a 4x4/TRD and I highly recommend it. After a long day trip on the highway, I had no complaints about the seating - my back and butt felt just fine. I've had no problem carrying my dirt-bike up hills either. While the transmission was a bit jerky at first, it's starting to loosen up as expected.

I never thought we could love a truck this much. Every day, my wife and I fight over who gets to drive it. It's the most practical, reliable, and all-around smart truck we've ever owned - the best one yet!

  4. Raul Christiansen 2024-11-07

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my Tundra Access Cab with the LTD trim package and the leather seats that I purchased new in 2003. It's been 12 years and the truck has 130,000 miles on it, but it's still going strong! It's comfortable, reliable, and runs like new. I've used it to carry and tow all sorts of things without any problems. I did have to change out the timing belt and water pump at 90,000 miles, but that was just because Toyota's maintenance schedule recommended it - there were no issues. I'm confident that this truck will last me another decade at least!

  5. Bobbie Reichel 2024-11-06

This truck has been 100% reliable. It's been used and abused, but still runs like new. Although the back seat was probably designed for someone 4 feet short, it's perfect for my dogs. If you don't have a big family, it's a great option. I'm looking forward to many more years of driving this truck!
