  • Summary: I took my truck to a garage for simple tire repair. I had a slow leak. In the process of trying to lift my truck, the technician hear 'crumbling sounds'. They stopped the lift immediately. Upon looking at the my chassis frame, the technicians saw major rust damage. One technician used flashlight to tap against the frame and he poked through it. The technician stated that this was not the first time seeing this problem on this truck model style. I contacted a local dealership. The individual I spoke with at the dealership also confirm rusting issues on the frame of my truck style model. I researched this on the internet to find out multiple complaints concerning the premature rusting of these frames due to poor quality steel and inadequate rust prevention coating. I reached out to my vehicle manufacture "care line". They stated they could not help me. My fear is my frame could break while driving and cause a vehicle accident. The worst frame damage is near the front wheels, both sides. The body, engine, transmission and all other safety components are solid and working well. Side Note: My dad owns a 1992 full size pickup truck (different manufacture). The frame is still solid. My truck is 10 years newer and the frame is falling apart due to manufacture using poor quality steel.

  • Summary: I have a 2004 Toyota Tundra SR5 that was part of the frame rust replacement campaign. It was brought into Bob Rohrman Toyota in Lafayette, IN and determined that it did not meet the criterion for replacement. I now have a sway bar bracket that rusted off of the frame. No mechanics or body shops will touch it and I was told there is nothing to even weld a new bracket to and the engine mounts are just a matter of time before rotting away. The truck only has 118k miles and zero body rust. I have lost value in this vehicle because I cannot sell it and the dealership and Toyota both refuse to remedy the situation.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-05-09
  • VIN: 5TBJN32104S
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: We had just provided a jump start from our Truck to a disabled older Honda Passport with a suspected low battery. This wasn't successful as it turns out it was a broken fuel pump causing the issue with the Honda. We had taken off the jumper cables, closed the hood and I pulled over to let my husband get into the vehicle. I was at idle, in drive with my foot on the brake when our Tundra started to accelerate rapidly. My husband wasn't even fully in the vehicle. We were on a one way street in a mixed residential/commercial neighborhood about 4 buildings down from a T intersection with a light. Luckily, the light was green in our favor as I had literally no control of the acceleration of the vehicle. I had my foot slammed on the brake with no response. We entered the intersection going roughly 25-35 miles an hour and careened left into the correct lane for our vehicle. Again, we were extremely lucky that there were no other cars in front of us nor any pedestrians. I was in a panic as the truck kept accelerating. I slammed on the emergency brake and threw the car from Drive into Park and only then did the truck slow it's crazy acceleration. We pulled over to the side of the road and I jumped out and wouldn't get into that truck again. My husband started the truck again and it seemed fine so he drove it the mile or so home with no incident. The next day he drove it 6 miles to a mechanic's shop , again with no incident. The mechanics performed tests on all the suspect parts and couldn't find anything defective. In the meantime, I came across stories on the internet about previous problems with some Toyota's Unintended Acceleration problems caused by faulty Electronic throttle systems so I have asked my mechanics to replace ours in our truck . We do not have a floor mat, so that clearly was not the issue.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-02-28
  • VIN: 5TBDT44184S
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: My truck was bought with no open recalls. I was recently informed my a mechanic while getting my brakes replaced, that the frame of the truck was rusted and cracked. He said the truck could literally break apart while driving. This truck is in great condition has zero rust on the body, has always been garage kept. The previous owner also kept it in the garage. It's 19 years old and only has 107,000 miles on it. The recall from Toyota for this problem was addressed per the records however the exact frame malfunction has occurred. Toyota says there is nothing they can do because the recall work was done. Even if the recall work wasn't done right or didn't fix the problem. My fear is there are other people in my position who have no choice but the drove the vehicle they already deemed unsafe. And the FIX Toyota came up with did not insure that this problem would not

STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-08-19
  • VIN: 5TBBT44184S
  • Components: STRUCTURE
  • Summary: I inherited my father’s Tundra which now only has 95,000 and almost flawless body. As part of the recall for Tundra frames, I took it to the dealer and they wanted nothing to do with the frame replacement and only put on undercoating. This has made it worse. On my last inspection (May) I was told that this truck frame is failing and I won’t be passing another inspection. I called a different dealer in the area and they said they cannot replace the frame now because of the other dealer’s coating. Would it be possible to have Toyota still replace the frame because it’s a safety issue? There is no reason to scrap the truck seeing as the rest of it is fine. Please advise and thank you for reading this!

STRUCTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-06-01
  • VIN: 5tbdt44144s
  • Components: STRUCTURE
  • Summary: I had my truck inspected for the frame recall a few years ago. My current mechanic says the frame should not look as bad as it does for the 125k miles it has on it. They have concerns that using a lift on it will damage the frame. This could make it nearly impossible to remove/change the tires. I look at other trucks from ford/Dodge/GM near the same age and I do not see anything similar on the frames. More of a surface rust then flake. The body and engine look great. Suspect while everything looks good the frame will be unable to perform as designed. I have reached out to Toyota and they want me to contact local dealer. I am concerned as recently a brake line failed and I am not sure if this will cascade into a large repair bill due to rusted components.

STRUCTURE,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-04-11
  • VIN: 5TBDT48104S
  • Components: STRUCTURE,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: The frame on my newly purchased 2004 Toyota Tundra is rotted through. The consumer protections Toyota claims to have taken to correct this, in this instance, the application of water seal to the frame in 2014 has trapped moisture and caused extensive corrosion rendering the vehicle unsafe. I have visited multiple Toyota locations received the same message. Toyota claims no responsibility for this course of events leaving consumers in my position with no recourse and with an unsafe vehicle we cannot use and in my case have spent almost eleven thousand dollars on. Where is the responsibility to consumer safety?

This is to address a safety defect in the passenger side frontal air bag inflator which may produce excessive internal pressure causing the inflator to rupture upon deployment of the air bag. This recall addresses both the passenger side frontal air bags that were originally installed in the vehicles, as well as replacement air bags that may have been installed as replacement service parts. A replacement air bag may have been installed, as one example, if a vehicle had been in a crash necessitating the replacement of the passenger side frontal air bag.
  • Consequence: In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the passenger's frontal air bag, the inflator could rupture with metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants potentially resulting in serious injury or death.
  • Remedy: 2003-2004 Corolla and Corolla Matrix vehicles that are recalled under both 15V-043 and 15V-285 are under a Do Not Drive advisory. Owners of these vehicles are advised not to drive their vehicles until the recall remedy has been completed. Toyota will notify their owners. Pontiac Vibe owners will be notified by GM. Dealers will replace the front passenger air bag. The recall began on July 13, 2015. Toyota owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331. Pontiac owners may call 1-800-762-2737. NOTE: This recall supersedes recall 14V-312 in its entirety.

Negative 2004 Toyota Tundra car reviews

  1. Nathen Moore 2024-03-03

The vehicle's rear access is not to my liking and its performance could be improved. In comparison to the Chevrolet Colorado, I believe this 4x4 falls short. Additionally, the gas mileage is subpar.

Positive 2004 Toyota Tundra car reviews

  1. Kelton Padberg 2025-01-05

First, the bad news: this thing drinks plenty of gas! Now, the good news: I bought it brand new in 2004 and after 225,000 km, all it needed were fluid changes, brakes, a 3rd set of Michelins, and a pricey right front bushing sealed unit. That's it! It's reliable, good-looking, and has lots of space. I believe this truck will easily last another 10 years and another 225,000 km, and I'll bet it will be just as reliable. It's the nicest truck I've owned to date, and I've had plenty! I can't figure out why I would change to a new truck when this one owes me nothing, still looks fresh, and rides beautifully with 5 fully retracting windows, including a full rear window drop-down, and a nice-sized moonroof. The big 3 can't offer that in a new truck for 50, 60, even 70 thousand dollars.

I drove a Toyota truck for years and never had any problems as long as I maintained it. This truck is great! I've already put 30k miles on it and it has only been in the shop for oil changes. I traded it in for an Explorer that had 9 recalls and needed 4 major parts replaced in just 4 years. As a large guy, I find it comfortable and it has a good ride even on bumpy backroads. I've used it to haul numerous loads and it never lags. It's a great truck for me!

  3. Evan Effertz 2024-11-23

Overall, I have a positive opinion of the Tundra. While I have needed more repairs than expected from a Toyota, I have had numerous Toyota cars that ran over 200,000 miles with minimal repairs. Although the truck is 15 years old, it only has 78,000 miles on it. Recently, I had to replace the starter for the second time, which was a bit expensive. However, I am hopeful that this will be the last truck I buy since I only put about 5,500 miles on it annually. It's worth noting that the only rust on the vehicle is where it got scratched down to the metal, but I had it primed and repainted and hopefully it will last a while before it starts rusting there again. All in all, I am satisfied with my purchase.

  4. Jensen Dibbert 2024-11-10

The double cab is definitely the way to go! It offers plenty of leg and elbow space in both the front and back seats. I haven't had the chance to tow with it yet, but it seems to have plenty of power. The ride is incredibly smooth and quiet - it almost feels like you're riding on air! It also handles turns really nicely and smoothly. The only downside I've noticed is that the gas mileage isn't very good - I've been getting about 15 miles to the gallon. However, the four wheel drive is a fantastic feature to have, especially in the snow. Overall, I highly recommend this truck!

  5. Kristoffer Kuphal 2024-11-03

After looking at Dodge and Ford, we came to the conclusion that the Toyota Tundra would be the best option. Not only does it have great workmanship, resale value, size, comfort, amenities and visual appeal, but buying it one year used brought the price down to where it should be. I absolutely love the spacious interior, smooth ride and quiet cabin. Although it doesn't have the best turning radius, everything else is top notch. I plan on getting a lot of mileage out of this one, despite the initial cost.
