1998 Chevrolet Malibu problems

The Chevrolet Malibu is a mid-size car manufactured and marketed by Chevrolet from model years 1964–1983 and since 1997. The Malibu began as a trim-level of the Chevrolet Chevelle, becoming its own model line in 1978. Originally a rear-wheel drive intermediate, GM revived the Malibu nameplate as a front-wheel-drive car in 1997.

Named after the coastal community of Malibu, California, the Malibu was marketed primarily in North America, with the eighth generation introduced globally. It is currently the only sedan offered by Chevrolet in the U.S.

First generation (Chevelle Malibu, 1964)

The first Malibu was a top-line subseries of the mid-sized Chevrolet Chevelle from 1964 to 1972. Malibus were generally available in a full range of bodystyles including a four-door sedan, two-door Sport Coupe hardtop, convertible and two-seat station wagon. Interiors were more lavish than lesser Chevelle 300 and 300 Deluxe models thanks to patterned cloth and vinyl upholstery (all-vinyl in convertibles and station wagons), deep-twist carpeting, deluxe steering wheel and other items. The Malibu SS performance package was available only as a two-door Sport Coupe hardtop or convertible and added bucket seats, center console (with optional four-speed manual or Powerglide transmissions), engine gauges and special wheelcovers, and offered with any six-cylinder or V8 engine offered in other Chevelles - with the top option being a 300 hp (224 kW; 304 PS) 327 cu in (5.4 L) in 1964.

For 1965, Malibus and other Chevelles received new grilles and revised tail sections and had the exhaust pipes replaced but carried over the same basic styling and bodystyles from 1964. The Malibu and Malibu SS models continued as before with the SS featuring a blacked-out grille and special wheelcovers. Top engine option was now a 350 hp (261 kW; 355 PS) 327 cu in (5.4 L) V8. 201 of the 1965 Malibu SS cars got Regular Production Option (RPO) Z16, which include a heavily modified chassis and Chevy's new 375 horsepower 396 cubic inch V8. All were hardtops, although rumors persist that one convertible was built.

The Malibu SS was replaced in 1966 by a new Chevelle SS-396 series that included a big-block 396 cu in (6.5 L) V8 engine (Canadian market did not receive the SS396 but marketed the former Malibu SS nameplate until January 1967 when it was phased out), heavy duty suspension and other performance equipment. Other SS-396 equipment was similar to Malibu Sport Coupes and convertibles including an all-vinyl bench seat. Bucket seats and console with floor shift were now optional on the SS and for 1966 with the SS now denoting a car with a big-block engine, the bucket seats became a new option on the regular Malibu Sport Coupe and convertible, upon which any six-cylinder or small-block V8 could be ordered. Also new for 1966 was the Chevelle Malibu four-door Sport Sedan hardtop. Styling revisions on all 1966 Chevelles including more rounded styling similar to the full-sized Chevrolets with sail panels and tunneled rear windows featured on two-door hardtop coupes.

For 1967, the same assortment of bodystyles were continued with styling changes similar to all other Chevelles including a new grille and revised tail section with taillights that wrapped around to the side. New this year was a Chevelle Malibu Concours station wagon with simulated woodgrain exterior side panel trim. Front disc brakes were a new option along with a stereo 8-track tape player. The same assortment of drivetrains carried over from 1966 with the top 327 cu in (5.4 L) V8 dropped from 350 to 325 hp (261 to 242 kW; 355 to 330 PS).

Common 1998 Chevrolet Malibu problems

The 1998 Chevrolet Malibu has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. One of the most common issues is transmission problems, which can cause the car to lose power or fail to shift gears smoothly. This issue can be caused by a faulty piston ring and may require a dealership visit to diagnose and repair.

Another common issue is electrical problems, including a failed passlock sensor, which can cause the car to lose power or fail to start. The passlock sensor is a security feature that prevents the car from starting if it detects an unauthorized key. When the passlock sensor fails, the car may not start at all or may start intermittently.

The 1998 Chevrolet Malibu has also been reported to have issues with the airbag deployment system. A recall was issued in 2013 due to a potential issue with the airbag deployment system, which can cause the airbags to deploy improperly. The recall affected approximately 44,000 vehicles.

In addition to these issues, the 1998 Chevrolet Malibu can also experience problems with the fuel pump, which can cause the car to stall or fail to start. This issue can be caused by a faulty fuel pump or a clogged fuel filter.

Finally, the 1998 Chevrolet Malibu can also experience issues with the wiper blades, which may not effectively clear the windshield. This issue can be caused by a worn-out wiper motor or bent wiper arms.

In conclusion, while the 1998 Chevrolet Malibu is generally a reliable car, it is prone to several common problems, including transmission failure, electrical issues, fuel pump failures, and airbag deployment problems. If you are a Chevrolet Malibu owner, it is important to be aware of these issues and to take your vehicle to a dealership to have any open recalls or TSBs resolved. Proper maintenance and care can help prevent these issues from occurring or becoming more serious.

SEAT BELTS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-10-10
  • Number Of Injuries: 1
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: 1G1NE52M3W6
  • Components: SEAT BELTS
  • Summary: Front seat belts come unbuckled while driving. My wife commuted to work in this car for about 12 months (37 miles one way) and mentioned that sometimes the seatbelt would come unbuckled. I suspected that she was not getting it latched in properly and did not think much of it as when I looked at the seatbelt it functioned properly. However our daughter started driving this car to and from school and also mentioned issues with the seatbelt occasionally coming unbuckled, unfortunately she was involved in a collision. When we learned that she did not have her seatbelt on it surprised us. When my aunt and uncle who owned the car visited in the hospital, my aunt mentioned that she also has had the seatbelt randomly come unbuckled multiple times in that car. I purchased seatbelts from cars of the same age and platform (1997-2004 GM N body) and have inspected them. I believe there is a design flaw that allows the seatbelt to latch in and feel secure when it is actually not locked in. In my pictures note the scratches on the release button. It is my feeling that normal debris (hair, lint, ect) may be causing the release button to partially stick down (1/8" or so). When the release button is stuck partially down the belt side can be inserted into the buckle and it will latch with a click sound, however the white plastic lock tab will not drop under the lock rod. In this latched but not locked situation the belt can be pulled on with a fair amount of force and still stay latched. When compared to other seat belt styles from other models of cars, I notice that the release button or cover have a smaller "slide surface area". Also on the other seat belt styles if the release button is stuck partially down the belt will not latch into the buckle.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2016-01-04
  • VIN: 1G1ND52T2W6
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: WHILE BACKING OUT OF MY DRIVE WAY TO THE RIGHT I HEARD LOUD CLUNKING AND THEN FINALLY A POP AS I TURNED THE STEERING TO THE LEFT. IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWING, WHILE DRIVING IN RESIDENTIAL AREA LEFT TURNS BECAME EXTREMELY DIFFICULT TO MAKE, AND I NOTICED THE STEERING WHEEL SEEMED TO BE OFF CENTER. I DECIDED TO MAKE A 3-POINT TURN TO RETURN HOME, AND WHILE BACKING TO THE LEFT THERE SEEMED TO BE LITTLE ACTUAL MOVEMENT BEFORE I FELT AS IF THE FRONT END OF THE CAR RAISED A BIT FOLLOWED BY ANOTHER LOUT POP. RETURNING THE WHEELS RIGHT SAW LITTLE MOVEMENT AT FIRST BEFORE TURNING AS NORMAL. LEFT TURNS THE REST OF THE WAY HOME DIFFICULT, WHILE RIGHT TURNS ARE MADE WITH EASE. UPON INSPECTION WHEN GETTING TO MY GARAGE RACK AND PINION MOUNT ON PASSENGER SIDE THAT APPEARS TO BE WELDED HAD BROKEN. PERHAPS RUSTED? I LIVE IN CA, SO I DIDN'T EXPECT RUSTED PARTS TO BE AN ISSUE.I HAVE RESEARCHED OTHER MALIBUS THAT HAVE EXPERIENCED INCREDIBLY SIMILAR BEHAVIOR, AND THERE IS EVEN A RECALL REGARDING THE RACK AND PINION IN MY MY MALIBU, HOWEVER MINE IS NOT INCLUDED DUE TO VIN. I FIND THIS TO BE ABSOLUTELY APPALLING THAT GM CAN RECEIVE SO MANY COMPLAINTS FOR THIS ISSUE, AND REQUEST FOR A FIX, AND SO BOLDLY TELL THESE CUSTOMERS THAT THEY WILL NOT SERVICE THEIR VEHICLES WHEN THIS IS CLEARLY A MANUFACTURER DEFECT.

STEERING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2015-10-05
  • VIN: 1G1NE52M9W6
  • Components: STEERING
  • Summary: I PURCHASED NEW TIRES TODAY AND THE TECHNICIANS NOTICED THERE WAS EXCESSIVE PLAY IN THE STEERING LINK VIA THE RACK AND PINION. UPON FURTHER INVESTIGATION IT WAS DISCOVERED THAT THE WELDS (WHICH ARE BOTH FACTORY AND MOST LIKELY ROBOTIC) HOLDING THE NUT THROUGH THE RACK AND PINION HAVE FAILED. THESE WELDS ARE NOT A CONSUMABLE OR AN OTHERWISE REPLACEABLE PART OF THE CAR AND UNACCEPTABLE FOR THEM TO FAIL. CURRENTLY IF THE NUT THAT WAS ORIGINALLY WELDED IN PLACE COMES OFF I WILL COMPLETELY LOSE STEERING ON THE DRIVERS SIDE. AT EVEN SLOW SPEEDS THIS COULD BE FATAL TO THE DRIVER AND OCCUPANTS. THE CAR HAS BEEN OWNED BY ONE FAMILY FOR THE LIFE OF THE VEHICLE AND IMMACULATELY MAINTAINED. FOR CHEVROLET TO DESIGN AND MANUFACTURE SUCH A CRITICAL PIECE IN THIS FASHION IS APPALLING. I AM TRYING TO GET IN TOUCH WITH CHEVROLET RECALLS DEPARTMENT AND SAFETY BUT NO ONE WILL RETURN MY CALLS. THE ONE PERSON THAT ANSWERED AT A DEALERSHIP SAID THEY WOULD ABSOLUTELY FIX IT IF AS A FAILED WELD SIGNALS A FABRICATION DEFECT. I GAVE THEM MY NUMBER SO THEY COULD CALL TO SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT BUT NO ONE HAS CALLED!

1998 Chevrolet Malibu recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 5 recalls for different components of the 1998 Chevrolet Malibu.

2014-07-03
  • Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION
  • Summary: This defect can affect the safe operation of the airbag system. Until this recall is performed, customers should remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the ignition key. The key fob (if applicable), should also be removed from the key ring. General Motors LLC (GM) notified the agency on July 3, 2014, that they are recalling 5,877,718 model year 2000-2005 Chevrolet Impala and Monte Carlo, 1997-2003 Chevrolet Malibu, 2004-2005 Malibu Classic, 1999-2004 Oldsmobile Alero, 1998-2002 Oldsmobile Intrigue, 1999-2005 Pontiac Grand Am and 2004-2008 Pontiac Grand Prix vehicles. In these models, the weight on the key ring and/or road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position, turning off the engine.
  • Consequence: If the key is not in the run position, the air bags may not deploy if the vehicle is involved in a crash, increasing the risk of injury.
  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will install two key rings and an insert in the key slot or a cover over the key head on all ignition keys, free of charge. The recall began on September 9, 2014. GM's number for this recall is 14350.

  • Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
  • Components: STEERING:RACK AND PINION
  • Summary: CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES HAVE LOWER PINION BEARINGS IN THE POWER RACK AND PINION ASSEMBLY IN WHICH THE RETAINER TABS WERE NOT CRIMPED PROPERLY. THESE RETAINERS COULD FAIL AND PERMIT THE BALL BEARINGS TO ESCAPE.
  • Consequence: IF THIS OCCURS, THE PINION SHAFT CAN BE FORCED UPWARD DURING LEFT TURNS AND BACK DOWN AS THE STEERING WHEEL IS MOVED BACK AND TO THE RIGHT. IF THE PINION SHAFT MOVES FURTHER, THE DRIVER WILL NEED TO EXERT MORE EFFORT TO TURN THE STEERING WHEEL, SIMILAR TO A VEHICLE WITHOUT POWER ASSISTED STEERING. IF THE PINION SHAFT MOVES EVEN FURTHER, THE DRIVER WILL REQUIRE MUCH HIGHER EFFORT TO TURN LEFT AND MAY NOT BE ABLE TO TURN THE WHEEL AS MUCH AS INTENDED. WITH THE MAXIMUM PINION SHAFT MOVEMENT, WHICH REQUIRES INTERNAL GEAR COMPONENT DAMAGE, THE DRIVER CAN ENCOUNTER HIGH RESISTANCE TO TURNING LEFT, FOLLOWED BY UNINTENDED POWER ASSIST TO THE RIGHT. IN ANY OF THESE CONDITIONS, A CRASH COULD OCCUR.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL A NEW LOWER PINION BEARING UNLESS INSPECT OF THE EXISTING BEARING INDICATES THAT REPLACEMENT OF THE GEAR ASSEMBLY IS NECESSARY. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN ON FEBRUARY 5, 2004. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT BUICK AT 1-866-608-8080; CHEVROLET AT 1-800-630-2438; OLDSMOBILE AT 1-800-630-6537; OR PONTIAC AT 1-800-620-7668.

IF A BUILDUP OF SNOW OR ICE RESTRICTS THE MOVEMENT OF THE PASSENGER SIDE WINDSHIELD WIPER ARM, THE PIVOT HOUSING CAN CRACK AND THE WIPERS WILL NOT OPERATE.

Negative 1998 Chevrolet Malibu car reviews

  1. Rollin Ferry 2025-01-03

Despite some initial issues with the car, Swope Mitsubishi offered us a new and improved Galant with more trade-in value. The Malibu's recurring problems, such as the tail lights, AC switch, ignition switch, alternator, creaking sounds, squeaky brakes, and cracked fly wheels, were all resolved with the new car. We appreciate Swope Mitsubishi's commitment to customer satisfaction and are now enjoying a much nicer vehicle.

Our Malibu has had several issues since we purchased it with 18000 miles. However, we have identified some common problems with the model, such as electrical issues with the taillights and brake lights. We have also experienced problems with the A/C switch. Despite these challenges, we have been proactive in addressing them and have made necessary repairs. While the ride can be noisy, we have found the car to be reliable overall. We have taken steps to address engine leaks and have found the seats to be comfortable enough for our needs. Although the interior space is somewhat limited, we have found the car to be a good fit for our lifestyle.

I bought this car brand new for my wife in 1998 with a V6 engine. So far, at 103,000 miles, the engine has performed well. Although there have been a few issues with the A/C switch, ABS, front brakes, alternator, and a squeaky noise, I would still recommend it if not for these problems. This is my second American-made car, and while I am a little hesitant to buy another one, I am still open to the idea.

  4. Randal Barton 2024-09-14

This car has had a lot of issues since 11/98, including three brake jobs, four AC repairs, power seat and window repairs, and multiple replacements of the stereo, cassette deck, batteries, alternator, and water pump. Unfortunately, the AC has gone out again. We are grateful that we purchased the extended warranty, as it has saved us a lot of money. We recommend avoiding Chevrolet based on our experience.

Of course! It all happened after 37,000 miles. The breaks, rotors, AC electrical (twice), rear light circuits, and front lights all needed fixing, which cost a total of $1600. The dealer did not think this was unusual or unexpected. Additionally, the rear right panel was loose for no reason, and the power steering hoses wore out, costing $250. It's disappointing to see such a lack of quality here, especially with the foaming falling from the dash, blocking vents, shift being loose, and lots of rattles.

No worries at all for the past five years, just remember to change the oil every three months. I'm still using the original brakes and tires, and the car has never let me down.

  2. Dave Cummerata 2024-08-24

This car was a joy to own and drive for the first 55000 miles. It was comfortable and always got 30 miles per gallon, which was great for my mostly highway driving. However, when I started using it more around town, I did experience some issues. The brakes wore out faster than expected at 12-15k miles, and there were some other minor issues like a leaky intake manifold gasket and a broken ignition switch. The windshield wipers also broke, but fortunately, they were recalled. While the brakes may not be the perfect fit for this car, overall, it's been a reliable and enjoyable vehicle to own.

  3. Jacey Schmeler 2024-07-24

I bought the car at a certified dealer with 35,000 miles and an extended 3-year bumper-to-bumper warranty. We absolutely love the way it drives and the standard features are fantastic, not to mention the powerful V6 engine. Best of all, my children adore it! I would highly recommend this car to any average American buyer.

  4. Oda Gutkowski 2024-07-06

You've got yourself a great car! It's got lots of power and there are no problems to worry about. Plus, there's plenty of room for the whole family and the trunk is absolutely cavernous!

  5. Faustino Rohan 2024-06-24

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with this car that I bought about 6 months ago. It had 70,000 miles on it when I got it, and I've put about 4,000 miles on it since then. Overall, it's been pretty reliable, except for a faulty A/C switch, which I've heard is a common issue with this type of vehicle. On the plus side, it has lots of space, a big trunk, and plenty of little storage spaces up front for all your odds and ends. The interior is also nicely designed and ergonomic. I got this car for a really good price, so I wasn't expecting it to be as reliable as a Honda Accord, which cost over $5000 more for a similar '98 model. But for the small amount of money I spent, I'm pretty satisfied with it, even with a few minor problems here and there. Thanks for listening!
