Ford Explorer sport trac 2004 problems
The Ford Explorer Sport Trac (also shortened to Ford Sport Trac) is a pickup truck that was manufactured and marketed by Ford Motor Company for the North American market. The first mid-sized pickup truck produced by Ford, the Sport Trac was marketed from the 2001 to the 2010 model years (skipping the 2006 model year). Sized between the Ranger (whose crew cab variants were sold outside of North America) and the F-150, the Sport Trac largely competed against crew-cab variants of the midsize Chevrolet Colorado/GMC Canyon, Dodge Dakota, Nissan Frontier, and Toyota Tacoma.
Produced over two generations, the Ford Explorer Sport Trac shared its chassis and much of its body from the Ford Explorer SUV (with the pickup truck bed designed specifically for the model line). All production was sourced from the Louisville Assembly Plant in Louisville, Kentucky (taking the place of the Ford Ranger).
As Ford developed the fifth-generation Ford Explorer as a unibody crossover for the 2011 model year, the Sport Trac was phased out of the model line, with production ending in October 2010. Closely matching the Sport Trac in size, the fourth-generation Ford Ranger serves the same market function in its SuperCrew four-door crew cab configuration.

- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-05
- Number Of Injuries: 1
- VIN: 1FMDU77K64U
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: All four side curtain airbags deployed while I was driving my car in a parking lot. There was no collision and no reason whatsoever for the airbags to deploy. The airbags in the dash did not deploy. The airbag hit me in the side of the head and shrapnel from the airbag, hit me in the face and eyes and knocked me sideways toward the passenger seat. I was completely stunned and had piercing pain throughout my head and neck. I was able to pull into a parking spot and call police dispatch, and get the car towed. The car will be inspected tomorrow by the insurance company, but because there was no reason for the airbags to deploy, this could be a major problem! Imagine if I was driving on the freeway or in another situation and the airbags just deployed for no reason with no warning. Please take immediate action to get these unsafe airbags off the road. The car will be inspected by the insurance company in the morning and the service provider in the following days. If you would like those reports, I will be happy to send them to you.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2020-11-12
- VIN: 1FMDU74W64U
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE
- Summary: ENGINE DIES WHEN DRIVING WITH CRUISE CONTROL OPERATING AND HEADING DOWN SLIGHT HILL AT SPEED OF AROUND 35 MPH. CRUISE IS DESIGNED TO MAINTAIN DRIVING SPEED GOING DOWN THE HILL (UP OR DOWN HILL FOR THAT MATTER). THE TACHOMETER INDICATES A SLOWING OF ENGINE RPM. AT HIGHER SPEEDS, THE SLOWING OF RPM DOES NOT FALL TOO LOW. HOWEVER, AT THE SLOWER SPEED AROUND 35MPH, THE RPM DROPS BELOW 500 RPM AND THE ENGINE STALLS. I LOSE POWER STEERING AND BREAKS. I HAVE A DIFFICULT TIME STEERING AND BREAKING. THIS IS A SAFETY PROBLEM ON A CURVE OR IF A RED LIGHT IS AHEAD. I CAN'T STEER THE CAR ON THE CURVE. I MAY NOT BE ABLE TO STOP THE CAR AT THE TRAFFIC LIGHT AND END UP IN AN INTERSECTION AND BE HIT BY VEHICLES WITH A GREEN LIGHT. I MAY HIT A CAR IN FRONT OF ME THAT HAS STOPPED AT A LIGHT OR STOP SIGN. I MAY NOT BE ABLE TO STOP FOR A PEDESTRIAN CROSSING AT THE INTERSECTION (WITH THE LIGHT). I MAY NOT BE ABLE TO AVOID A CHILD ... WHO DARTS INTO THE ROADWAY. THIS IS A PROBLEM FOR MANY OWNERS OF THE 2004 EXPLORER. THERE ARE MANY COMPLAINTS ABOUT IT ON THE WEB. IT IS A PROBLEM THAT HAS BEEN NOTED FOR YEARS. I COMPLAINED ABOUT IT TO DEALERS SEVERAL TIMES. DEALERS DISMISSED IT AS NOTHING CAN BE FOUND, REPLICATED OR JUST NOT A PROBLEM. IT IS TIME TO RECALLL THE VEHICLE TO FIX THIS SAFETY PROBLEM. THIS IS AN ONGOING PROBLEM. I TRY TO AVOID USING CRUISE CONTROL CONTROL AT THE 35MPH RANGE. IT SEEMS OK AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. THE LAST OF MANY INSTANCES WAS IN NOVEMBER 2020. THE PROBLEM FIRST HAPPENED WHEN THERE ABOUT 30,000 MILES ON THE CAR.

- Summary: THIS PAST WEEKEND I WAS DRIVING AN 04 FORD EXPLORER WHEN BOTH SIDE AIRBAGS SPONTANEOUSLY DEPLOYED. I WAS NOT IN AN ACCIDENT. I WAS DRIVING DOWN A TWO-LANE ROAD AT LESS THAN 35 MILES PER HOUR WHEN THE AIRBAGS DEPLOYED. I WAS ABLE TO PULL OVER BUT NOT BEFORE SUSTAINING AN INJURY TO MY EAR AND NOT BEFORE THE PASSENGER SUSTAINED AN INJURY TO HER RIGHT ARM. I REPORTED THIS TO FORD, WHICH ADVISED TO CARRY THE VEHICLE TO A DEALERSHIP. TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP, WHERE THE SERVICE MANAGER WAS UNCONCERNED WITH THE FACT THAT THE AIRBAGS SPONTANEOUSLY DEPLOYED. HE LOOKED AT THE VEHICLE FOR TWO DAYS ONLY TO REPORT HE WAS NOT AWARE OF WHY THE AIRBAGS DEPLOYED AND STATED THERE WAS NOTHING HE COULD DO ABOUT IT. I REPEAT, I WAS NOT IN AN ACCIDENT AND THE AIRBAGS DEPLOYED WHILE DRIVING. THIS IS OF COURSE QUITE CONCERNING TO ME BUT FORD DOES NOT SEEM TO CARE. PLEASE FOLLOW-UP ON THE SAFETY OF FORD'S VEHICLES.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-09-24
- VIN: 1FMZU63K94U
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: MY 2004 FORD EXPLORER HAS RECENTLY AND QUICKLY BEGAN SHIFTING VERY BADLY. I ALWAYS COME TO A COMPLETE STOP AND SHIFT INTO NEUTRAL BEFORE SHIFTING INTO REVERSE OR DRIVE BECAUSE WHEN SHIFTING INTO REVERSE FROM P OR D, IT ALWAYS TAKES A WHILE, THEN CLUNKS AGGRESSIVELY INTO PLACE. WHILE DRIVING SOMETIMES DOWNSHIFTING WILL ALSO CLUNK INTO PLACE. THIS ISSUE HAS BEEN REPORTED BY COUNTLESS OTHER DRIVERS AND HAS CAUSED MANY POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS SITUATIONS. FROM ACCELERATING SLOWLY THEN BANGING GEARS AND TAKING OFF, TO STUTTERING WHILE TRYING TO ACCELERATE, OR EVEN SWITCHING INTO REVERSE WHILE PARKING, AND HAVING THE CAR TRY TO JUMP BACK A FEW INCHES IS ONLY A FEW ISSUES THIS PROBLEM HAS CAUSED MYSELF AND COUNTLESS OTHERS. PEOPLE ARE REPLACING TRANSMISSIONS LEFT AND RIGHT TO NO AVAIL, ONLY A FEW 10 THOUSAND MILES AFTER INSTALLING NEW TRANSMISSIONS, THEIR CAR STARTS TO EXPERIENCE THE SAME ISSUES AS BEFORE. AT LOW SPEEDS AND IN PARKING LOTS THIS BECOMES A GAME OF LUCK AS YOU ACCELERATE MORE THAN NECESSARY TO TRY TO GET GOING, THEN STOPPING AND WAITING A FEW SECONDS WHILE YOU SHIFT TO NEUTRAL BEFORE SHIFTING TO REVERSE AS FEAR OF IT BANGING INTO GEAR AS YOU TRY TO MANEUVER YOUR CAR AROUND PEOPLE AND OTHER PARKED CARS BECOMES A MORE DANGEROUS TASK THAN IT SHOULD BE. IN SUM, WHILE STATIONARY, SLOW SPEED, OR JUST CRUISING, THE TRANSMISSION WHILE SHIFTING GEARS, OR SHIFTING INTO REVERSE/DRIVE, SOMETIMES WANTS TO BANG INTO GEAR OR LOSE POWER, OR DELAY SHIFTING ONLY TO BANG INTO GEAR MOMENTS LATER. SOME ISSUES WHEN TAKING CARS INTO REPAIR IS FINDING METAL TRANSMISSION SHAVINGS WHERE THEY SHOULDNT BE! FINALLY, THE EXCESSIVE BANGING CAN ALSO DAMAGE THE ENGINE OVER TIME IN ADDITION TO THE TRANSMISSION. PLEASE REFERENCE THE FOLLOWING LINK TO GET A BETTER IDEA OF THE ISSUES: HTTPS://WWW.CARCOMPLAINTS.COM/FORD/EXPLORER/2004/TRANSMISSION/TRANSMISSION_SLIPPING_SHIFTS_HARD.SHTML THANKYOU

A good truck for those not needing lots of bed space. The interior offers lots of room and a comfortable ride. Heat and A/C controls in the back seat are a plus, as is the roll-down rear window. I have been very pleased with it, and as a mechanic, I have not seen many problems with this model.
-
This is the best truck that you'll ever have! You can fit five passengers in it and still have room to put 4 golf bags in the back without a problem. It has a nice stiff ride and the 4.0L V6 has got really nice pick-up. You can get a lot of truck for your money. You won't be disappointed. It's a great buy!

This has been a great vehicle so far! As long as you keep up with the routine maintenance, it should last a long time. I have noticed a few things inside that haven't held up as well, such as the paint around the stereo console being a bit cheap, the air vents not always staying open, and the steering wheel cover being quite worn. But overall, I'm still really happy with it!

Outstanding performance. Just as comfortable on mountain trails as riding around town. Well worth it.

I got this car for my 16th birthday a year ago and it has been a great ride ever since. All I have had to do is change the oil and wiper blades. It's perfect for me as a piano player who needs to carry around people and keyboards, as well as my two seadoos. It can carry everything with ease and I would highly recommend it to anyone who needs a truck but prefers the interior of an SUV. In fact, I even had to pull my friend's Jeep out of the mud with it! It knows no boundaries.

The 04 Ford Sport TRX I owned had 143,000 miles on it when it suddenly jumped time and cut off in my driveway. I have since learned that the 4.0 V6 engine is known for having a lot of problems with jumping time. It is unfortunate that there was no recall for this issue. In my opinion, replacing the engine with a 302 would be a better option. I am currently unable to fix this problem due to PC restrictions.

The SUV/truck looks good and drives okay when going straight. However, when it comes to turning, it wobbles like a duck. If you're looking for something unique, this vehicle might be just what you need. It's not too big or too small, and it's sure to turn heads.

Bought in 2007 with only 25,000 miles, this XLT Premium is like new and I saved a bunch! I also looked at a new Jeep four door, but there was too much metal showing, and a Dakota four door, which was noisier and more truck-like. I'm well pleased with this compromise design - it's good looking, solid, and quiet. It fits perfectly in my garage. I've even added a K&N air filter, removed the resonator, and changed to a flow-through muffler. I'm getting 16 mpg in suburban driving.
