The Mazda CX-9 is a mid-size crossover SUV manufactured by Mazda in Japan since 2006 through two generations With three-row seating, it was Mazda's largest passenger vehicle until the arrival of the CX-90.

Despite being built in Japan at Mazda's Ujina #1 plant in Hiroshima Prefecture, the CX-9 was never offered in the Japanese domestic market. The shorter and narrower Mazda CX-8 was offered in Japan instead.

First generation (TB; 2006)

The first generation CX-9 was originally fitted with a 3.5 L Ford V6 engine, but, in 2008, the engine was changed to a 3.7 L unit producing 204 kW (274 hp) and 366 N⋅m (270 lb⋅ft) of torque. The updated engine was introduced in June 2007 and it was now built by Mazda themselves. This engine was coupled with a six speed automatic transmission. The first generation is based on the Ford CD3 platform that is shared with many Ford and Mazda models; the Ford Edge is its close mechanical sibling. It was launched at the 2006 New York International Auto Show.

Standard safety equipment included blind spot monitoring, backup camera, electronic stability control, traction control, roll stability control, front side impact airbags, and three row side curtain airbags.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-04-21
  • VIN: JM3TB3CV0B0
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: Driving kids to school a few months ago. Car started to smell like burning rubber. I thought it was the garbage truck ahead of us. As we turned the corner 2 blocks later, the car dead stopped and we all went flying forward. It jerked so hard, we are lucky our necks didn't snap. I put the car in park and turned it off. I waited a few minutes as I was too worked up, and started the car again. We got about 50ft before a very loud noise began, almost as if something was dragging underneath. I stopped, and had it towed home. I then had it towed to mechanic. They said bad TRANSFER CASE & DRIVE SHAFT. - TRANS PAN GASKET. I am a single mom with no money to afford to have it fixed in fear of it going bad again. They quoted me 3,500 here in PA.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-09-01
  • VIN: JM3TB3DA8B0
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: Braking trouble recent in weeks in 2011 Mazda CX-9 vehicle. Had mechanic (Euro Motorsports in Chagrin Falls OH) check it out. Turned out to be a faulty Brake Booster. Mechanic test drove car; braking failed and he almost rear-ended another vehicle. He found on line a Mazda service notice dating from April 4, 2014 called SSP93. Mazda issued an extended warranty of 7 years or 90,000 miles, whichever came first, to have defective part replaced by an improved part. But we were never informed by Mazda of Bedford, where we bought the vehicle. Currently, our vehicle has about 83,000 miles. Never knew there was a problem until recent trouble with the braking. There are thousands of CX-5, Cx-7, and Cx-9 vehicles in operation in U.S. right now; probably many owners have no idea there is a brake defect in their vehicles that could cause a serious accident, potentially fatal. Mazda should have done a recall in 2014, not an extended warranty. Although Brake Boosters are supposedly good for at least 150,000 miles of driving, our brake failure at around 83,000 miles proves otherwise. NHTSA should order Mazda to recall all vehicles with the defective brake part and replace them at Mazda's expense, probably hundreds of dollars each time. We do not want to have our brake booster replaced by our regular Euro Motosports mechanics because a recall must typically be repaired by the dealer. We already filed a complaint with State of Ohio Attorney General's office, but their people say the complaint must first go through BBB. No urgency on their part at all, even when informed potentially fatal flaw in the brakes. To avoid dangerous accidents, NHTSA should act more swiftly. Thanks.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-07-14
  • VIN: JM3TB3DA4B0
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: Defective water pump located inside the engine that when failure occurs can cause coolant to leak into engine causing complete engine failure. This is a major safety hazard due to the fact that these cars with defective water pumps can break down with very little warning in the middle of a freeway! I have contacted Mazda who refuses to do anything due to it being outside warranty but will not acknowledge the safety concern sudden engine failure can cause on a perfectly maintained car. In California there is currently a lawsuit against Mazda for this issue and hundreds of other Ford and Mazda owners who have been caught in very dangerous situations due to this water pump failure issue. The situation we were involved in could have gone very differently and that was my family in the vehicle that Mazda seems to care about a couple thousand dollars more then the value of life... is just ridiculous! Please do the research yourself so no one has to loose their life over this.

Due to the failure and the warning light, the contact had the vehicle towed to an independent mechanic. Upon inspection of the vehicle, the mechanic informed her that coolant had leaked into the oil cylinder and they referred her to a dealer for assistance. The contact then had the vehicle towed to the dealer where they diagnosed the vehicle with a defective water pump as well as engine failure. The manufacturer was also notified of the failure and stated that the failure was caused due to poor maintenance. No further assistance was provided. The vehicle had yet to be repaired and remained in the possession of the dealer. The failure mileage was approximately 144,000.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • VIN: JM3TB2DV8B0
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: BRAKES REALLY HARD TO PRESS. WIFE THOUGHT CAR WASN'T GOING TO STOP AND SHE WAS GOING TO REAR END CAR IN FRONT OF HER. SOMETIMES BRAKE PEDAL WOULD FEEL SPONGY. OVER LAST MONTH THERE WAS AN INTERMITTENT STRANGE NOISE SOMETIMES WHEN CAR WAS STARTED. MAZDA DEALERSHIP IDENTIFIED THE PROBLEM TO BE A DEFECTIVE BRAKE BOOSTER. I FOUND THAT NHTSA OPENED INVESTIGATION ON CX-9 BRAKE ISSUES PREVIOUSLY AND MAZDA IDENTIFIED PROBLEM TO BE BRAKE BOOSTER. MAZDA EXTENDED THE WARRANTY TO 7 YEARS OR 90,000 MILES AND NHTSA CLOSED INVESTIGATION. OUR BRAKE BOOSTER FAILED AT 9 YEARS WITH 79,388 MILES ON THE CAR. FROM WHAT I HAVE READ THE LIFE EXPECTANCY OF A BRAKE BOOSTER IS THE LIFE OF THE CAR. MAZDA NEVER INFORMED US ABOUT THIS POSSIBLE PROBLEM. OUR FAMILY COULD HAVE BEEN SERIOUSLY INJURED OR KILLED DUE TO THIS DEFECT. WHY DID THE NHTSA ACCEPT AN EXTENDED WARRANTY AS A SOLUTION?

  • Summary: THE TRANSFER CASE IN OUR 2011 MAZDA CX-9 FAILED AT 130,000 MILES. I UNDERSTAND THAT MAZDA KNOW ABOUT A DEFECT AS TO THE PROXIMITY OF THE TRANSFER CASE TO THE EXHAUST. THE HEATED TRANSFER CASE LUBRICANT BECOME SLUDGE-LIKE AND CAUSES THE CASE TO FAIL ALSO AFFECTING THE TRANSMISSION SPLINES. THE HEATED LUBRICANT ESCAPED AND DRIPS ON THE EXHAUST AND FILLS THE VEHICLE WITH A TOXIC SMELLING GAS AND APPARENTLY CAN LIGHT ON FIRE. THE TRANSFER CASE FAILED WHILE DRIVING MAKING GETTING OUT OF TRAFFIC DIFFICULT. MAZDA ISSUED A BULLETIN IN 2014 EXTENDING THE WARRANTY TO 7 YEARS OR 90,000 MILES BUT DIDN'T INFORM ANY OF THE CUSTOMERS OF THIS PROBLEM. THERE IS NO SERVICE SCHEDULE FOR THE TRANSFER CASE AS RECOMMENDED BY MAZDA. OR ANY WAY I UNDERSTAND TO CHANGE THE LUBRICANT IN THE TRANSFER CASE. WITHOUT INFORMING US OF THE ISSUE OR HAVING RECOMMENDED ANY PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE MAZA CAUSED A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION FOR MY FAMILY. I HAVE CONTACTED MAZDA USA AND THEY HAVE BEEN UNHELPFUL.

These vehicles are equipped with certain air bag inflators assembled as part of the passenger frontal air bag modules, and used as original equipment or replacement equipment. In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the front air bags, these inflators may rupture due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to absolute humidity and temperature cycling.
  • Consequence: An inflator rupture may result in metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
  • Remedy: Owners are advised not to drive their vehicles until the remedy is performed. Mazda will notify owners, and dealers will replace the passenger frontal air bag inflator with an alternate inflator, free of charge. The recall began on August 30, 2017. Owners may contact Mazda customer service at 1-800-222-5500. Mazda's number for this recall is 1317F. Note: This recall supersedes recall 16V356 and all vehicles that were not remedied under that campaign are now covered by this one.

  • Manufacturer: Mazda North American Operations
  • Components: SUSPENSION:FRONT:CONTROL ARM:LOWER BALL JOINT
  • Summary: Mazda North American Operations (Mazda) is recalling certain model year 2007-2014 CX-9 vehicles manufactured October 24, 2006, to December 28, 2013. The affected vehicles have front suspension ball joints that may corrode from water leaking into the fitting.
  • Consequence: Over time, the ball joint corrosion may result in the front lower control arm separating from the ball joint, causing a loss of steering control and increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Mazda will notify owners, and dealers will replace both the left and right lower control arms, free of charge. The recall began on September 14, 2015. The recall will begin with model year 2007-2009 vehicles registered in Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, Washington D.C., West Virginia, and Wisconsin. The second phase will be for model year 2010-2014 vehicles in the same states. Finally, all remaining vehicles will be remedied. Owners may contact Mazda customer service at 1-800-222-5500. Mazda's number for this recall is 8515G.

Negative 2011 Mazda Cx-9 car reviews

We have had our CX-9 GT AWD for six months now and while it comes with a lot of extras for the price, we have had some mixed experiences. Unfortunately, we have encountered some issues such as poor mileage, wind and road noise, and some new squeaks and rattles after six months. Additionally, the navigation system has not met our expectations. However, we do appreciate the Bose sound system, and the interior leather looks great and appears to be holding up well. Overall, we have had some ups and downs with our CX-9 GT AWD, but we remain hopeful that it will continue to improve over time.

I strongly advise against purchasing the CR9 due to the two recalls it has already had. The dealership's response to the first recall was unsatisfactory, and the second recall was only notified through a letter. Despite spending $700 to fix the brake problem that arose three years later, I only received a partial refund of $380 after submitting the work order and proof of payment. Mazda's declining quality and lack of support for their products have left me with no desire to own one again.

It is evident that Mazda CX9 has a recurring issue with the transfer case, as many other owners have reported similar problems. Despite our car having only 17k miles on it, my wife experienced a clunking noise while reversing and a grinding noise at low speeds during a road trip with our two daughters. After having it towed to a dealership, they discovered that mice had nested near the bell housing. Although the dealership attempted to fix the issue, the mechanic called to inform us that the transfer case had cracked while trying to back it up. It is disappointing that Mazda has not yet issued a recall for this issue. However, we are confident that the dealership will fix the problem and we will have our car back in 2-3 weeks.

A few items could be improved: 1. The power rear lift gate can only be opened using the remote or the switch inside the car, rather than by squeezing the handle. 2. The memory seats do not include side mirrors. 3. It is not possible to enter a single contact in the Bluetooth phone book. 4. There are no audible sensors with the backup camera. 5. The GPS does not display freeway speed limits. It would be great if these features were included in a car marketed as a 'Grand Touring' model.

Mazda makes an amazing family SUV that I would definitely buy again. I'm actually trading this one in for a new one with AWD so I can tow my boat. :)

I come from a family of car enthusiasts, with my father being an ASE certified mechanic and my husband working as a tow truck driver. As a result, I have a good understanding of cars and did a lot of research before purchasing my 2011 Mazda CX-9. Despite having specific criteria, I was able to find the perfect car for me. However, after driving it for a month, I have noticed a few things that I am not particularly fond of. Firstly, I find the shifting between gears to be quite noticeable, which can be a bit frustrating. Secondly, the gas mileage is not as good as I had hoped, with the car averaging 17.7 mpg despite my careful driving. Thirdly, the cargo space is smaller than my previous car, which can be a bit of a challenge when carrying a lot of shopping bags or transporting six passengers. Fourthly, the black leather seats can be uncomfortably hot in the southern heat. Finally, the A/C takes a while to cool down the car. Despite these issues, there are many positives to the car, including its ability to accelerate quickly, the third row seat, and its sleek design both inside and out.And I really like the updates that my '03 Envoy didn't have, such as an AUX port and an in-console 12v port (I guess it's no longer called a

Just picked up my CX-9 GT. This car is awesome! I know it's new, so I'll return after a while and update everyone. I paid well below TMV price! You can trust TMV!

We purchased our CX-9 in 2015 with 60k miles on the odometer. Since then, we have driven it for nearly 100k more miles. Although it was a salvage title due to flood damage when it had less than 10 miles on it, we decided to take a chance on it since the previous owner had it for so long after the flood. They replaced the alternator and wheel bearings and checked the wiring. We have used this vehicle to pull a 10' enclosed trailer, travel all over the country, and for lots of around-town use. It has been a reliable and solid vehicle for us. We have owned it for almost a decade now and have only had to replace the transfer case for the AWD, which was a pricey fix at around $2,000. We also had a window motor go out, but we were able to fix it ourselves for only $70 thanks to rockauto.com and a helpful YouTube video. Most of the work we have done has been regular maintenance such as oil changes, brakes, air and cabin filters, brake fluid purge (once), transmission fluid drain and fill, and light bulbs. The car is not high-tech, but the Bluetooth phone connection is clear and the radio sounds decent. It runs great and has excellent ride quality. We are very happy with our first Mazda and look forward to owning more in the future!
