The Volkswagen Jetta is a compact car/small family car manufactured and marketed by Volkswagen since 1979. Positioned to fill a sedan niche above the firm's Golf hatchback, it has been marketed over seven generations, variously as the Atlantic, Vento, Bora, City Jetta, Jetta City, GLI, Jetta, Clasico, and Sagitar (in China).

The Jetta has been offered in two- and four-door saloon / sedan, and five-door wagon / estate versions – all as four- or five-seaters. Since the original version in 1980, the car has grown in size and power with each generation. By mid-2011, almost 10 million Jettas have been produced and sold all over the world. As of April 2014, Volkswagen marketed over 14 million, becoming its top selling model.

Nameplate etymology

Numerous sources note that the Jetta nameplate derives from the Atlantic 'jet stream' during a period when Volkswagen named its vehicles after prominent winds and currents (e.g., the Volkswagen Passat (after the German word for trade wind), Volkswagen Bora (after bora), and Volkswagen Scirocco (after sirocco).

A 2013 report by former VW advertising copywriter Bertel Schmitt, said that — after consulting VW sources including Dr. Carl Hahn, former Volkswagen of America Chief and W.P. Schmidt, former sales chief at Volkswagen — no evidence suggested Volkswagen employed a naming theme for its front-drive, water-cooled vehicles; nor was there evidence the names derived from a theme; nor that a naming system "was ever announced, either officially or confidentially."

Common 2011 Volkswagen Jetta sportwagen problems

The 2011 Volkswagen Jetta SportWagen has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from its owners. One of the most frequently mentioned issues is related to the power steering system, which can feel heavy or unresponsive, making it difficult to steer the vehicle. This problem is intermittent and can be hard to diagnose, but it has been reported by many 2011 Jetta owners.

Another significant problem area for the 2011 Jetta SportWagen is the fuel system, particularly in diesel models. The NHTSA received 317 complaints about the fuel system, with more than half of them related to diesel problems that caused the engine to stall or die. Many of these issues occurred when the car had less than 75,000 miles on it, indicating that the problem may be related to the design or manufacturing of the fuel system components.

The engine is another problem area for the 2011 Jetta SportWagen. The NHTSA received 215 engine problems, including issues with the timing chain system, stalling, hesitation, and even reports of the engine catching fire. These problems affected many cars with less than 75,000 miles on them, indicating that they may be related to the design or manufacturing of the engine components.

The high-pressure fuel pump is another component that has caused problems for the 2011 Jetta SportWagen. CarComplaints.com gave this model the badge of "Beware of the Clunker" due to the number of complaints submitted about the high-pressure fuel pump failure and sudden loss of power. This problem can be dangerous, especially if it occurs while driving at high speeds or in heavy traffic.

The interior accessories of the 2011 Jetta SportWagen have also been reported to have problems. For instance, 34 complaints were registered about the 2010 model year, out of which 12 were related to engine issues, 22 to electrical problems, and 8 to fuel system problems. Other problems are more of an assortment related to the transmission, brake system, and body and paint of the Jetta.

Despite these problems, the 2011 Jetta SportWagen is known for having few reported problems and is considered a dependable choice for any used car buyer. It has a roomy interior, expansive trunk, and exceptional fuel economy, making it a popular choice among car buyers. However, it is important to be aware of these common problems and have them checked and addressed by a qualified mechanic before purchasing a used 2011 Jetta SportWagen.

  • Date Of Incident: 2017-02-02
  • Number Of Injuries: 1
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: 3VW3L7AJ3BM
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: On February 2, 2017, My car was stop in an intersection. A car coming in my direction swerved into my lane and hit me head on. The air bag was deployed, it exploded so violently that both of my hands were severly injured. There was a fracture in my right wrist. There was a laceration to the base of the thumb and my thumb finger almost fell off and required several stiches for my forefinger to be attached. The bones in my right arm was shattered into pieces and it required major surgery. My left arm requires a total of 4 surgeries. I have to undergo an eighteen (18) months of Physical Therapy for both my left and right hand. There was so much pain in my left arm and the doctor had to perfom an operation called "Proximal row carpectomy (PRC)". Proximal row carpectomy (PRC) is a motion-preserving treatment for the degenerated wrist. Three (3) very important bones in Proximal row carpectomy (PRC)surgery was removed. This surgery is done to alleviate (reduced) the pain in my arm. I was still lucky, fortunate that the car hit me in front. If my car was hit from behind, my upper body especially my head will be thrown forward and the explosion of the air bag would explode in my face and the xplosion could have killed me or break my neck. The exlposion of the air bag was very similar to the beirut explosion that was caused by ammonium nitrate which was sometimes used in the defected airbag. Very explosive. The air bag was supposed to protect me but in this case it caused tremedous damage to my both my left and right arm. After more than 5 years both of my hands have not fully recovered. It still hurts lifting some heavy object which I could easily lifted before the accident. I trully believe that the airbag is my car has a problem and it could be a Takata air bag that also need to be recalled. My neighbor’s teenage daughter is also driving the same year and model of my car and it always worry me to think what if the air bag is defected.

Negative 2011 Volkswagen Jetta sportwagen car reviews

  1. Jabari Schaden 2024-11-09

The electronics in this car are designed in such a way that check light resets can only be done by a dealer, and replacing the radios can be quite expensive. When I purchased my car with 80,000 miles, the check engine light would come on every time I started it, and the reset would only last for 2 weeks. After taking it to the dealer, I found out that they have the only computer that can reset it. While I would consider selling it back to VW if they offered, I would be hesitant to purchase another one.

  2. Juston Metz 2024-11-06

Hello! I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to share my experience with a car I bought back in May 2011 in Wisconsin. Since then, I brought the car with me to Central Europe where I currently reside. I must say, the car has been very comfortable and has handled the many bad roads in our region with ease. However, I did encounter a small issue with the phone connection button on the steering wheel. It was poorly positioned and often pushed by accident, resulting in a blasting dial tone. Additionally, the rear gate and window collected dust and dirt quite easily. Despite these minor design flaws, I still enjoyed my time with the car. Unfortunately, I sold it 2 years ago at a significant loss, only to find out 3 months later about the Diesel Gate scandal. Needless to say, I was very disappointed with VW. Nonetheless, I hope this review helps you in your car search. Best regards!

  3. Baron Hagenes 2024-08-12

Although it was love at first sight, my experience with this car has been disappointing. Despite the fact that the ignition key becomes extremely hot and the info screen occasionally malfunctions, the dealership found nothing wrong with the ignition when I took it in for repairs. Additionally, the acceleration is sluggish. Overall, I am confident in my assessment of the car's issues and hope to find a resolution soon.

  4. Lawson Conn 2024-06-06

Hey there! If you're experiencing issues with your VW's CR injection system, you might want to look up HPFP failure. Unfortunately, it seems to be a common problem with 2010 and newer models. I had a bit of a scare when mine died on the road at only 23,000 miles, but after some persistence with VW of America and the dealership, they were able to fix it under warranty. It's frustrating to hear that some dealers are blaming owners for the issue, claiming they put gasoline in their engines instead of diesel. That's definitely not the case and it's important to hold them accountable for any engineering defects. Let me know if you have any questions or concerns!

  5. Maximo Effertz 2024-06-02

I sold the car to a Volkswagen enthusiast shortly after posting this review. The VW dealer offered a paltry buy-back amount, so I sold it for Edmund's suggested price. Since then, I bought a Subaru because I live in snow country. I have to admit, I miss having a peppy, manual transmission. However, the VW was not good in snow, and I still find it exploitative that they willingly misled the consumer. I have owned the car since 2011. I bought it for the mpg and low emissions. I had heard about the expense of maintaining a Volkswagen because of high repair costs but bought it anyway. Within a year, the door hinges started squeaking as if the car were 10 years old. After a year, I periodically noticed a diesel fumes smell when I started the car. It came and went. When I asked the dealer about it, they didn't understand the reason and said they never found it. Finally, a professor at SUNY Morrisville in the Auto Tech school identified that it may be some type of self-cleaning filter. There is no repair for it. It just happens. The road noise can hinder conversation. The car has needed more small things done in a shorter time than any other car I've owned. I've had 2 Subarus, Hondas, and Toyotas. The dashboard is an odd mix of basic, old-fashioned dials and updated, more technologically advanced controls. I didn't mind that at first. I figured that's how they kept costs down. If it ain't broken, don't fix it. But the first time I needed to adjust the heating system while driving, I changed my mind. The icons around the dial for heating and AC are small and not easily visible from the driver's seat. They are located at the bottom right of the control panel under the radio. The defrosters are not sturdy or efficient enough for the winter climate where I live, or even spring and summer foggy, humid rainy weather. Windows stay fogged for a long time, and the edges of the front windshield never fully clear of snow or slush. The back seat windows remain fogged.undefined

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my Jetta Sportwagen TDI. I bought it back in May 2011 and it has been a great ride so far! I've been very diligent in following the recommended servicing schedule for my car, and I've even changed the tires to Nitto Motivos which have been amazing! I also change my air filters myself, which has been a fun little project. It's worth noting that I'm still on the original ceramic brake pads, which is pretty impressive. Take care!

  2. Ari Marquardt 2024-09-09

20 years of Crown Victorias and I'm loving my Sportwagen. Mileage is awesome, plenty of power - fun to drive. Comfortable seats and best equipped for the price. I couldn't be happier with my choice. On fairly level ground with cruise at 75mph and A/C on I was at 47mpg average over four hours! Drops in the mountains but still beats a V8 gas engine. Great looking car too. Thanks VW!

  3. Darryl Langosh 2024-08-18

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share my experience with the car I bought this summer. I've really enjoyed it so far! It's not as sporty as my Audi convertible, but it still accelerates and drives well. The seat is really comfortable, and I'm getting between 30-31 mpg, which is great. I've also found that there's plenty of cabin space for my trips around town.

  4. Graham Haley 2024-07-19

I purchased my 2011 TDI Sportwagen 2 years ago as a second car. It has been incredibly reliable and fun to drive, not to mention super economical. In fact, I loved it so much that I ended up getting rid of my other car. I truly believe that this car is an undiscovered gem.

  5. Haleigh Willms 2024-07-08

Your new Sportwagen TDI sounds amazing! It's great to hear that you're enjoying it so much. The Tempest Blue DSG with the premium pkg and navigation sounds like a great choice. It's wonderful that everything is easy to use and that you can control your iPod feature on your iPhone through the touchscreen radio. Your son must love the panoramic sunroof! The DSG shifting smoothly and effortlessly is a great feature, and it's impressive that you're getting 38mpg driving mostly in the city. The 2.0TDI engine sounds powerful and capable of great passing on the highway. It's great to hear that the Bluetooth system is awesome and that you can control your entire phone through your steering wheel or radio. Thank you for sharing your positive experience!
