2003 Toyota Matrix problems
The Toyota Matrix, officially named Toyota Corolla Matrix, is a compact hatchback manufactured by Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada in Cambridge, Ontario and derived from the Corolla. Introduced in 2002 as a 2003 model, the Matrix was the result of a joint venture between Toyota and General Motors, with the GM version being the Pontiac Vibe, which was assembled by New United Motor Manufacturing, Inc. (NUMMI) in Fremont, California, United States.
The Matrix was positioned as a sporty hatchback counterpart of the North American Corolla and was counted as a variant of it in Toyota's sales figures.
Although identical mechanically, and nearly as much internally, the Matrix and Vibe had different sheetmetal and exterior trim designed by their respective brands. Both vehicles are narrow, tall station wagons styled in a quasi-SUV fashion (called a crossover utility vehicle or "CUV" by Toyota) and marketed to a fairly youthful market segment. This type of car is also commonly referred to as a sport wagon.
First sold in February 2002, the Matrix saw a minor facelift for the 2005 model year, and was redesigned completely in 2008 for the 2009 model year, following the tenth generation Corolla. Sales of the Matrix were discontinued in the United States in 2013 and in Canada in 2014.

AFTER DOING SOME SEARCHING, I FOUND OUT THAT 1) MANY OTHER TOYOTA MATRIX AND COROLLA OWNERS HAVE HAD THIS ISSUE AND 2) THERE WAS A RECALL ON THIS PART FOR TOYOTAS OF A SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT MAKE, MODEL, AND YEAR. I BELIEVE THAT THIS PART IS DEFECTIVE, AND THAT TOYOTA SHOULD COVER THE REPLACEMENT COST, INCLUDING LABOR.

The XRS is a really stylish car with a lot of power for hills. The interior features are great. It's worth noting that this vehicle requires premium gas (octane > 91). The ride can be a bit choppy on the highway due to the 'sport tuned suspension', but overall it's a great car.
-
Hey there! I just wanted to share with you my amazing experience with the Matrix XRS. I bought it brand new back in April 2002 with zero miles on it, and now, in September 2015, it has an incredible 380,130 miles on it! Can you believe it? This car is an absolute beast! The original engine and six-speed transmission are still going strong, as well as the air conditioning, power steering, alternator, and radiator fan. Of course, I've had to replace a few major parts over the years, such as the starter, water pump, and catalytic converter, but it's still the best car I've ever owned. And the best part? It still gets 30 mpg! My goal is to hit 500,000 miles on it, even though the odometer will stop at 299,999 miles. To replace the odometer, it would cost about $850, but I just use my trip gauges to keep track of the mileage. The key to keeping this car running smoothly is to stay on top of the oil changes. Thanks for listening to my story!

Aug, '22 85,100 miles and another inspection passed without any issues. During the summer, I've been getting an average of 27-31 MPG, depending on how much I use the air conditioning. Despite being built in August '02, the car only seems to have one dash rattle. I expect the body will someday rot away before there's a serious mechanical issue. In Feb, '22, I took another trip to Tampa and back in the loaded down Matrix. I even threw in a side trip to the Villages and to Charleston, and my average MPG was down to 32. The only issue was that a heat shield had rotted away and was banging around under the car. I had it cut away and will probably find a substitute remedy when it gets warmer out. In Aug, '21, with 78,900 miles, I replaced the hatch lift struts and passed PA inspection with flying colors. The car still runs like a champ! In Feb, '21, I took the car from SE PA to Tampa, FL and back. With two people, two suitcases, two carry-ons, a vacuum, bicycle, two loaded backpacks, med-sized cooler, toolbox, and 5 reusable grocery bags (full), all of that was inside the car and I could've still fit more in if I wanted to sacrifice visibility out the back window. No issues with the car, and I averaged 35 miles per gallon. If you find a used Matrix in good mechanical shape, you might want to consider it if you need a reliable, used car. In June '20, with 74,500 miles, there were no mechanical issues. The original, driver's side, all-weather floor mats have cracked, but the AC cranks fine in the heatwave we're having. As reliable as ever! In Jan. '20, there were still no mechanical issues. A few rust In June 2016, my Matrix turned nearly 14 years old and it still shows no signs of rust. Although it is parked in a covered garage during weekdays, it is exposed to the elements in SE Pennsylvania the rest of the time. The factory CD player stopped working after 14 years, but I replaced it with a Bluetooth capable head unit. If you're looking to buy a used Matrix, don't expect Nav or Bluetooth. There is no touchscreen unless it's an aftermarket unit. In December 2016, I still had no issues with the car and only wanted to detail the MPG better. In the summer, it gets 28 city/30-35 highway (loaded), 35-40 highway (one driver/and bag). In the winter, it gets 25 city/32-40 highway. Admittedly, I probably waste gas in the winter by warming the car up and defrosting. In June 2017, I updated that it was still running as well as ever and still in great physical shape. I did resurface and seal the headlights, but if that lasts less than a year, I will replace the headlight assembly. In June 2018, the car had 68K miles and I replaced the headlight lenses in September 2018. Visibility is like it was off the dealer lot. New Michelin Premiers made it much quieter now too with much improved traction on wet roads over the previous set of BF Goodrich Traction TA's. Other than brakes, belts, tires, filters, radio antenna (vandalized?) and the head unit, everything is still original and none of it squeaks. The storage bin to the left of the steering wheel won't stay closed, but my sunglasses fit nicely in it. It even still has the original exhaust. I can't believe how durable this car has proven to be. In January 2019, Edmunds requested an update and I'm happy to report that there are still no issues at all. There is some road noise at highway speeds, but overall, my Matrix has been incredibly reliable. I bought it new in September '02 and have only put 52K miles on it. Despite its age, it still runs like a dream and the 5-speed manual transmission has been flawless. While I've considered upgrading to a more comfortable car, the Matrix's reliability, fuel efficiency, and versatility make it hard to justify the expense. I plan on driving it for at least another 14 years! The routine maintenance has been easy to keep up with and I've only had to replace the serpentine belt a few times and one brake light bulb. The cargo capacity is also a huge plus - I can fit dozens of bags of mulch or a week's worth of camping gear with ease. Even my 29-inch mountain bike fits in the back with the seats down (with the front wheel still on!). While the seating position can be a bit uncomfortable on long drives, bringing a small pillow can make all the difference. Plus, with an average MPG of 30 in the summer and 26 in the winter, I don't need to stop for gas often!

Your parents bought this car new and when you turned 16 in 2008, they turned it over to you. Before you had it, your brother drove it and got in a wreck with a large SUV and it survived with just a large dent in the front end. Since then, you have put this car through the wringer. As a rock climber, you are constantly travelling and the storage capacity is amazing with the folding back seats. This is your go-to road trip car. It's now 11 years old and you just took it up through the Adirondaks, White Mountains and to Maine and back to Ohio. It has a little over 150K and it's still running strong. You are actually planning a trip across the country to visit your brother in Portland, OR from Ohio.

Congratulations on your purchase! The 2003 XRS with 190k miles for $3k sounds like a great deal. It's wonderful to hear that you find it fuel efficient and an absolute blast to drive. The exceptional ride and build quality are definitely a plus. It's amazing that the vehicle saved your life during the accident, and the 5-star frontal and rear crash ratings are a testament to its safety features. The sporty look and practical storage options make it a great overall car. The only drawback is that the engine requires premium gasoline, but with nearly 30 mpg, it's not a big deal. It's definitely a true driver enthusiast's car!

The Matrix and its sister car, the Pontiac Vibe, are based on the Corolla platform. While it's true that this car, in all trims but the XRS, may be underpowered, particularly with the automatic, which is the only transmission available with AWD versions, it still has some great features. For example, it has a spacious interior that can fit lots of stuff, and it gets decent fuel economy. When considering your next vehicle, it's important to keep in mind that reliability is a key part of quality of life, but you should also consider comfort and usability. Thanks for reading!

This car has not met my expectations. Despite taking good care of it and doing all the oil changes, the drawers and panels fall off all the time, the chrome has fallen off, and the AC has broken 3 times. Unfortunately, the engine and transmission have a serious problem and the dealership won't fix it due to the expired warranty. As a loyal Toyota customer, I expected more from this car and I am disappointed that it did not last longer than 3 years.

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with my Matrix that I bought about two months ago. I use it for my daily 400 mile courier route and it's been amazing so far! Even with 175,000 miles on it, the car rides great, runs smooth, and shifts easily. I'm happy to report that I'm getting almost 33 mpg across the entire route, which is better than I expected. It's been an absolute pleasure to drive!

Hi there! I'm currently dealing with a bit of a nightmare with my 2003 AWD Matrix, but thankfully I do have a warranty. I'm looking into my rights under the lemon law, as it seems like these cars are having the same transmission problems. I've noticed that the transmission in the AWD version is different from other Matrix models, and it's causing some issues. I believe that Toyota should take responsibility for this. If anyone else feels the same way or has any advice for me, please post on this forum. I'll be keeping an eye out. Thanks so much!

Beware of purchasing a used 2003 or 2004 manual transmission Matrix as it has been proven to have a faulty bearing. Many owners have reported issues with the transmission falling apart just after the warranty period. Toyota has not taken responsibility for this issue. As a former Toyota owner from 1990-2007, I cannot recommend purchasing another Toyota in the future.
