Toyota Matrix problems

toyota logo

The Toyota Matrix, officially named Toyota Corolla Matrix, is a compact hatchback manufactured by Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada in Cambridge, Ontario and derived from the Corolla. Introduced in 2002 as a 2003 model, the Matrix was the result of a joint venture between Toyota and General Motors, with the GM version being the Pontiac Vibe, which was assembled by New United Motor Manufacturing, Inc. (NUMMI) in Fremont, California, United States.

The Matrix was positioned as a sporty hatchback counterpart of the North American Corolla and was counted as a variant of it in Toyota's sales figures.

Although identical mechanically, and nearly as much internally, the Matrix and Vibe had different sheetmetal and exterior trim designed by their respective brands. Both vehicles are narrow, tall station wagons styled in a quasi-SUV fashion (called a crossover utility vehicle or "CUV" by Toyota) and marketed to a fairly youthful market segment. This type of car is also commonly referred to as a sport wagon.

First sold in February 2002, the Matrix saw a minor facelift for the 2005 model year, and was redesigned completely in 2008 for the 2009 model year, following the tenth generation Corolla. Sales of the Matrix were discontinued in the United States in 2013 and in Canada in 2014.

Common Toyota Matrix problems

The Toyota Matrix, known for its practicality and reliability, has had some issues throughout its production years. Here are some of the common problems based on complaints from owners:

  • Transmission Failure: The 2004 Matrix has been reported to have transmission problems, particularly with manual models. These problems include loud grinding noises, hesitation while shifting, and no fifth gear.
  • Excessive Oil Consumption: The 2009 Matrix has been reported to have excessive oil consumption, which can be a major issue if the engine components lose lubrication.
  • Engine Stalling: Certain model years, particularly those with 1.8-liter and 2.4-liter engines, have been reported to have engine stalling problems. This can be caused by cracks at certain solder points in the 1.8-liter 1ZZ-FE engine or increased oil consumption in the 2.4-liter engine.
  • Brake Problems: The 2009-2010 Matrix has been reported to have brake problems due to a reduced braking vacuum in colder weather. This can result in longer stopping distances and is a significant safety concern.
  • Airbag Problems: The Matrix has had issues with airbags, including faulty SRS lights, internal circuit shorts, and airbag inflator explosions. These issues have led to recalls and are a significant safety concern.
  • Windshield and Visibility Problems: Some Matrix owners have reported damaged windshield wipers and power window controls, which can affect visibility and safety.
  • Water Pump Failure: A bad water pump can cause squealing and/or rattling noise coming from the engine compartment. The recommended repair involves replacing the drive belt tensioner with an updated part.
  • Intake Manifold Gasket Leaks: A leaking intake manifold gasket can cause the Check Engine light to come on with certain codes. Replacing the intake manifold gasket may cost $120-$280 in a repair shop.

In general, the Matrix is a reliable car, but these issues are worth considering before purchasing a used one. The worst model years seem to be 2003, 2006, and 2009, which have the most complaints and severe issues.

Toyota Matrix

What is the main problem with the Toyota Matrix?

One of its most severe issues is the engine problem. Many owners have noticed that the car consumed too much oil and heard ticking or rattling noises coming from the engine. Eventually, the Matrix engine just failed.

How long does a Toyota Matrix last?

Matrix owners have reported that they've driven 300,000 miles on their Matrix and the only maintenance it ever required were oil changes and tire rotation.

Is the Toyota Matrix a reliable car?

According to carparts.com, the Toyota Matrix has good reliability ratings, such as a four out of five or a reliability score of 81 out of 100. This could be attributed to the fact that the Matrix is basically a Toyota Corolla, just with a larger trunk.

Are Toyota Matrix expensive to fix?

The average total annual cost for repairs and maintenance on a Toyota Matrix is $396, compared to an average of $526 for compact cars and $652 for all vehicle models.

Great job on the updated styling! The XRS model comes with a 5-speed manual (Canadian) and a 158hp 2.4 liter 16-valve VVT-i engine, which is also used in the Camry, Venza, RAV4 and Scion xB/tC. It's pretty peppy and has good fuel economy. On our last long trip, we averaged 570kms (354mi) on a tankful of 89 oc gas (87 recommended). The interior trim is simple with lots of plastic, but it's well put together. The XRS Body kit/Rear spoiler gives it a bit of a performance look, but it's not too overpowering. The flat fold-down rear seats and folding front passenger seat are great for larger cargo items. The 18-inch rims give it a stiffer ride, but it's not jarring. The radio has AM/FM/CD/Sirius XM/USB/iPod functions, and the 115V and 12V power taps are a nice touch. The ABS/TCS/EBA safety features are standard. **Update - Apr 2016:** The XRS is still going strong. At 70,000kms, the engine has signs of oil burning as oil was missing about 500ml / 0.5 quart- on the last oil change. However, there's been no lack of power since we first got the car. Fuel mileage seems to be the same, although I find I get better mileage by using higher octane fuel. The engine sounds and performs better on synthetic oil vs ordinary dino oil (I just get whatever is on sale). While the fit and finish (as compared to my old 2001 Corolla S-5M) is not very good, there are still lots of great features. Toyota seems to have cheapened out on the interior as some parts do not mate well- Dash and A Pillars seems to rub and has loose-sounding clicking noise, especially when cold. I'm noticing LOTS of road noise. I switched from the stock 18Hi there! I noticed that there are a few things that could use some attention in your car. For example, there seems to be an issue with the driver seat creaking and clicking when cornering at normal speeds, which I understand can be frustrating. Additionally, the rear hatch damper has prematurely failed and the interior gadgetry can be a bit flaky at times. However, I'm glad to hear that mechanically, your car is as good as any Toyota and you plan on keeping it for a while. I do want to bring to your attention that there are a few things that may need some maintenance, such as the rusted interior part of the Moonroof Frame and the rear brake rotors that may need to be replaced soon. Overall, I hope you continue to enjoy your updated Corolla with all its additional gadgets and nannies. Let me know if there's anything else I can help you with!Hello! It's great to hear that your car is still running well after all these years. Although you've had a few minor issues, it's good to know that the brakes and EBD are working properly and that the engine is still running smoothly. It's also great that you're taking such good care of your car by changing the oil more frequently than recommended and using synthetic oil. Keep up the good work and happy driving!

The car has some great features such as a cute and fun design, cool interior controls, and a rear bumper that can withstand an impact without breaking. However, there are some areas that could be improved. The fuel economy is not great at 14 city/23 hwy. Additionally, I have experienced some issues with the car such as rattling when driving above 55mph, the radio volume no longer being speed sensitive, and difficulty starting the car. The cloth seats are also prone to staining easily. Lastly, the back seatbelts are more suitable for children than adults. Overall, the car has its pros and cons, but with some improvements, it could be even better.

The Toyota is a reliable car, but it has an average appearance and overly sensitive pedals. However, it is certainly functional and has lots of hatchback space for groceries or even a large dog. The gas consumption is not great, even by 2010 model year standards. The interior space is used effectively with standard materials for the price point. The seats are not my favorite, but the overall design is good. The car has no issues in two years/45,000km. While I don't enjoy driving it too much, it is a solid build and very functional. Overall, it could be better, but it could also be worse.

I recently totaled my '02 Pathfinder and settled on the Matrix. While I like the seats, I found that the door's armrest does not accommodate my long arms. However, after considering a lot of other vehicles, I found that the Matrix was the best overall purchase for the money.

I originally bought this car to replace my old hatchback with something more reliable and fuel efficient. I opted for the 1.8L engine and initially, it met my expectations. However, I started experiencing issues once I hit the 50000 mile mark. Unfortunately, I have had to visit the dealership service center over 5 times for major repairs, all of which are documented in Service Bulletins. The latest issue affects all Matrix and Corollas with the 1.8L engine and will not be covered after the 60000 mile warranty runs out. The engine components of the crankshaft assembly need to be replaced, which is concerning. Overall, I am disappointed with the reliability of this car.

I bought a 2012 Matrix 4-speed auto/1.8L brand new and have driven 1,600 miles so far. I really like it! The ride is firm but pleasant, and the cargo room is excellent with the rear seats folded down. The acceleration is decent, and it's smooth, stable, and quieter than I expected on the freeway. While the steering doesn't provide as much road feel as I would like, it's still quite acceptable. On the first tank of gas, I got 28.7 MPG (US) [8.2 L/100Km] driving around the suburbs. The only complaint I have so far is an occasional buzzing sound from the interior trim close to the passenger A-pillar, but with the cooler fall weather, the sound is hardly noticeable. I would definitely buy this car again!

I live in the Berkshire Mountains, which means dealing with a lot of snow and ice. However, this car with its all-season radials, was able to drive out of the snow like it was a summer day. It was truly a delight! Not only that, but it also has great gas mileage, plenty of space for luggage and even my huge German Shepherd. It has all the bells and whistles one could want, including auto key, air conditioning, cruise control, and more. And the best part? It's all for under $19,000! I did my homework and couldn't find a better car on the road for reliability and long-term value. Who could ask for more? And to top it off, it's a Toyota!

I've had my Toyota Matrix for over 12 years now, since I bought it brand new back in the summer of 2005, and it has been one of the best cars I've ever owned. It has been extremely reliable overall, with only the usual periodic maintenance required. I've been consistent with changing the oil and fluids approximately every 5,000 miles, which has definitely helped. This car has also been very fuel efficient for both highway and city driving, often getting over 300 miles on a full tank. The only downside is that it doesn't have a lot of power or acceleration, but that's to be expected with this type of car. You're not buying a car like this to win any street races. The best feature is the amount of cargo space. If you fold down the back seats and the front passenger seat, you can fit an incredible amount of stuff in here. This makes it an ideal car for long road trips or even moving day. The Toyota Matrix is a solid, dependable, versatile and economical car that, if taken care of, will serve you well for many years.

After driving an Aurora and spending thousands of dollars on gas and repairs, I decided to buy a Toyota car. Although my first choice, the Prius, was a little over my budget, I decided to go with the Matrix. I am very happy with my choice. The car is easy to drive, has a lot of cargo space, and I spend much less time at the gas pump.

This is my second Matrix and I absolutely love it! It's incredibly spacious and can fit almost anything, from a dining room set to a recliner - I know from experience! Plus, the gas mileage is fantastic, even in town. Highly recommend!
