Toyota Matrix problems

The Toyota Matrix, officially named Toyota Corolla Matrix, is a compact hatchback manufactured by Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada in Cambridge, Ontario and derived from the Corolla. Introduced in 2002 as a 2003 model, the Matrix was the result of a joint venture between Toyota and General Motors, with the GM version being the Pontiac Vibe, which was assembled by New United Motor Manufacturing, Inc. (NUMMI) in Fremont, California, United States.
The Matrix was positioned as a sporty hatchback counterpart of the North American Corolla and was counted as a variant of it in Toyota's sales figures.
Although identical mechanically, and nearly as much internally, the Matrix and Vibe had different sheetmetal and exterior trim designed by their respective brands. Both vehicles are narrow, tall station wagons styled in a quasi-SUV fashion (called a crossover utility vehicle or "CUV" by Toyota) and marketed to a fairly youthful market segment. This type of car is also commonly referred to as a sport wagon.
First sold in February 2002, the Matrix saw a minor facelift for the 2005 model year, and was redesigned completely in 2008 for the 2009 model year, following the tenth generation Corolla. Sales of the Matrix were discontinued in the United States in 2013 and in Canada in 2014.

Common Toyota Matrix problems
The Toyota Matrix, known for its practicality and reliability, has had some issues throughout its production years. Here are some of the common problems based on complaints from owners:
- Transmission Failure: The 2004 Matrix has been reported to have transmission problems, particularly with manual models. These problems include loud grinding noises, hesitation while shifting, and no fifth gear.
- Excessive Oil Consumption: The 2009 Matrix has been reported to have excessive oil consumption, which can be a major issue if the engine components lose lubrication.
- Engine Stalling: Certain model years, particularly those with 1.8-liter and 2.4-liter engines, have been reported to have engine stalling problems. This can be caused by cracks at certain solder points in the 1.8-liter 1ZZ-FE engine or increased oil consumption in the 2.4-liter engine.
- Brake Problems: The 2009-2010 Matrix has been reported to have brake problems due to a reduced braking vacuum in colder weather. This can result in longer stopping distances and is a significant safety concern.
- Airbag Problems: The Matrix has had issues with airbags, including faulty SRS lights, internal circuit shorts, and airbag inflator explosions. These issues have led to recalls and are a significant safety concern.
- Windshield and Visibility Problems: Some Matrix owners have reported damaged windshield wipers and power window controls, which can affect visibility and safety.
- Water Pump Failure: A bad water pump can cause squealing and/or rattling noise coming from the engine compartment. The recommended repair involves replacing the drive belt tensioner with an updated part.
- Intake Manifold Gasket Leaks: A leaking intake manifold gasket can cause the Check Engine light to come on with certain codes. Replacing the intake manifold gasket may cost $120-$280 in a repair shop.
In general, the Matrix is a reliable car, but these issues are worth considering before purchasing a used one. The worst model years seem to be 2003, 2006, and 2009, which have the most complaints and severe issues.
What is the main problem with the Toyota Matrix?
One of its most severe issues is the engine problem. Many owners have noticed that the car consumed too much oil and heard ticking or rattling noises coming from the engine. Eventually, the Matrix engine just failed.
How long does a Toyota Matrix last?
Matrix owners have reported that they've driven 300,000 miles on their Matrix and the only maintenance it ever required were oil changes and tire rotation.
Is the Toyota Matrix a reliable car?
According to carparts.com, the Toyota Matrix has good reliability ratings, such as a four out of five or a reliability score of 81 out of 100. This could be attributed to the fact that the Matrix is basically a Toyota Corolla, just with a larger trunk.
Are Toyota Matrix expensive to fix?
The average total annual cost for repairs and maintenance on a Toyota Matrix is $396, compared to an average of $526 for compact cars and $652 for all vehicle models.

Vehicle year: 2006
You have a 2006 Toyota Matrix XRS, which is a rare trim of Matrix with not many built. It's one of the best cars you've ever owned, especially with the 6-speed manual, which makes driving the XRS more fun. You've even managed to do 0-60 m.p.h. in 6.5 seconds, which is crazy fast for this kind of car! The front seats are amazing, but the rear seat cushion comfort could be better. It's not bad, but it's not the best. Have you considered a leather option? Overall, it's a great car!!

Vehicle year: 2003
The Matrix I purchased has been a joy to own. I haven't had any problems with it at all, except for bottoming out in a pothole and messing up my front bumper. Overall, I would definitely buy another one, unless they made changes that I didn't like.

Vehicle year: 2005
I've had my Matrix for almost 6 years now, since March 2011. I bought it specifically for the all-wheel drive needed for New England winters. I'm happy to say that the Matrix has never gotten stuck in the snow, although the standard tires can be a bit slippery. You just have to drive slowly to keep from skidding in turns and make sure not to stop too suddenly. It's possible that getting standard all-season tires instead of the sportier ones will remedy that. I absolutely LOVE driving my Matrix on beaches, sand dunes, and any off-roading I can get. It's so much fun! The Matrix holds its own with any 4X4 truck for any typical rugged fun. Recently, I got into an accident in the snow on an unplowed road, at a sharp curve, going down a steep hill. But thanks to my Matrix, I was kept safe and sound!

It's great to hear about your experience with your XRS! It's impressive that you've driven it all over the east coast without any issues. It sounds like you and your wife take great care of it. It's understandable that after so many miles, you've had some minor issues with the plastics and clutch, but it's great that you're investing in a heavy duty clutch this time. It's also good to know that you're looking for another '03 to '05 Matrix, they really are great cars! Thank you for sharing your story with us.

Vehicle year: 2003
We've owned the matrix for 5 years now and it has over 100,000 miles. Only routine maintenance. We bought it for the interior flexibility since we have 2 dogs. Although we would have preferred the V6 for a little more pep, we have had a very good experience with it and plan to drive this car for another 100,000 miles!

This is my wife's car. She bought it for its great gas mileage. However, in terms of driving and comfort, it may not be the best fit for everyone. For instance, as someone who is 6'2 with long legs, I find it a bit challenging to drive. Nevertheless, it could be a perfect first car for a teenager. One thing to note is that backing up can be difficult due to limited visibility out the back. If you're not familiar with using mirrors to back up, it could be a bit tricky.

I replaced my previous vehicle with this one, but unfortunately, it has not met my expectations. Despite being satisfied with my purchase initially, I have experienced multiple issues with the brakes and the ride quality. These issues have persisted even after multiple visits to the repair shop. As a result, I have lost confidence in Toyota's manufacturing standards and will not consider purchasing another vehicle from them in the future.

This car has not met my expectations. Despite taking good care of it and doing all the oil changes, the drawers and panels fall off all the time, the chrome has fallen off, and the AC has broken 3 times. Unfortunately, the engine and transmission have a serious problem and the dealership won't fix it due to the expired warranty. As a loyal Toyota customer, I expected more from this car and I am disappointed that it did not last longer than 3 years.

While the handling may not be the most enjoyable, the car is certainly peppy for a 4 cylinder! If you're considering purchasing, I would recommend opting for a model with basic safety features such as ABS and side curtain airbags. On the plus side, the car is super cute on the outside and has plenty of room in the backseat. The only downside is that the front cup holders are a bit too skinny for most drinks. Overall, it's a great car with a lot of potential!

The electric windows were rattling, grinding and popping, which eventually led to one of the windows falling out. Despite seeking assistance from the dealer, the issue was not resolved. Additionally, the engine was surging while stopped at lights or in traffic, which was also not addressed by the dealer. The door handles had a metallic finish that was peeling away, causing occupants to cut their fingers on the sharp edges. The issue worsened to the point where the white plastic handle underneath was visible. I took it upon myself to remove the remaining sharp edges and caution occupants. Although the dealer offered to repair the issue at my expense, I contacted the Toyota Customer Service Experience Center and was referred back to a dealer.
