The Toyota Matrix, officially named Toyota Corolla Matrix, is a compact hatchback manufactured by Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada in Cambridge, Ontario and derived from the Corolla. Introduced in 2002 as a 2003 model, the Matrix was the result of a joint venture between Toyota and General Motors, with the GM version being the Pontiac Vibe, which was assembled by New United Motor Manufacturing, Inc. (NUMMI) in Fremont, California, United States.

The Matrix was positioned as a sporty hatchback counterpart of the North American Corolla and was counted as a variant of it in Toyota's sales figures.

Although identical mechanically, and nearly as much internally, the Matrix and Vibe had different sheetmetal and exterior trim designed by their respective brands. Both vehicles are narrow, tall station wagons styled in a quasi-SUV fashion (called a crossover utility vehicle or "CUV" by Toyota) and marketed to a fairly youthful market segment. This type of car is also commonly referred to as a sport wagon.

First sold in February 2002, the Matrix saw a minor facelift for the 2005 model year, and was redesigned completely in 2008 for the 2009 model year, following the tenth generation Corolla. Sales of the Matrix were discontinued in the United States in 2013 and in Canada in 2014.

    I'm so glad I found the Matrix when I was looking for a reliable car! I've owned it for over 6 years now and it's been great. I've only had to do regular maintenance like oil changes and tire rotations, so it's been really affordable to own. While it's not the fastest car out there, it gets me where I need to go without any problems and at a low cost. I also love that I can fold down all the seats and fit big items in the car. Overall, I'm really happy with my purchase and now that it's paid off, I couldn't be more satisfied!

    The car has some great features such as a cute and fun design, cool interior controls, and a rear bumper that can withstand an impact without breaking. However, there are some areas that could be improved. The fuel economy is not great at 14 city/23 hwy. Additionally, I have experienced some issues with the car such as rattling when driving above 55mph, the radio volume no longer being speed sensitive, and difficulty starting the car. The cloth seats are also prone to staining easily. Lastly, the back seatbelts are more suitable for children than adults. Overall, the car has its pros and cons, but with some improvements, it could be even better.

    During our vacation trip, we rented a brand new '06 Matrix with only 1K miles on it. It was a great opportunity to test it out for an extended period of time since we were considering buying one. The gas mileage was impressive, but we did notice that it lacked power and was quite loud when shifting into lower gears on hills, especially with two people and luggage. Additionally, the accelerator was very sensitive and the interior felt a bit cheap. Although the seats were comfortable for a few hours, they did start to sag after a while. However, we think it would be suitable for local commutes. The exterior shape is pleasing to the eye, but it did seem to be put together cheaply. We did hit a small pothole at low speed (5mph) and unfortunately, one side of the front air dam popped off. We later found out that it was held together by plastic screws when we tried to snap it back together. Overall, it was a good experience and we appreciate the opportunity to test it out.

    I was thrilled to purchase my 08 Matrix after driving my 01 Accord into the ground. Initially, the new car was amazing, but after driving it daily for almost a year, I have come to dislike it. As a born and raised Yooper girl, I have plenty of experience driving in poor conditions, so that's not the issue. However, my Honda Accord drove much better than this car. The wind easily takes the Matrix into other lanes and medians, making it difficult to handle. Snow is my worst enemy, and even with good tires and a fresh alignment, the car is light and squirrely, not to mention the road noise is loud. I miss my Honda every single day. The gas tank is small, although the mileage is good, as long as you don't have to go far. My only other cosmetic complaint is the wiper lever is in a bad spot, and I hit it constantly. However, the plastic backs to the seat provide ample space for my dogs in the back, and the hatchback is convenient. I love the option to open the glass door or the entire hatch. While I trust the Matrix's reliability, I wouldn't recommend it if you prefer a smooth ride. A 4Runner is in my future. Although I won't be buying another Matrix, I still love Toyota.

    A great commuter car. It's basic, simple, and reliable. The only work I've had done is caliper, disk, pad, and rear hub replacement due to salt and rust damage. Although I wish the brakes were stronger and that the car had more low-end torque, I still find it to be a good reliable car for the money. I have a manual transmission and there is a slight delay when pressing the accelerator from idle, but overall it's a comfortable ride. The only issue I have is that the clutch and brake pedals are too close together, which can be problematic when wearing boots.

    I recently traded in my 2004 Toyota Matrix. Despite the original A/C giving out four months ago, this car has been through it all and still managed to maintain a working power sunroof, power windows and locks, and an interior and exterior in good condition after 14 years and nearly 192K miles. It's a hearty and practical car that's comfortable to ride in and fun to drive. Although I did experience some issues with the alarm system not deactivating in certain areas with radio signals, apparently this is common with other Toyotas and Lexus vehicles. Overall, I must admit that Toyota cars and trucks really do last a long time, and this one definitely did. If I hadn't lost my A/C here in hot and humid Florida with rainy spring and steaming summer around the corner, I probably would have kept it to 200k miles and beyond. It's a great car!

    When I bought my Matrix, I was looking for a car that was good on gas and could fit my dog. I'm happy to say that I got both! I thought the front-wheel drive would make it great in the snow, but during a recent snowstorm, I didn't feel safe driving it. Despite that, this car is perfect for me, my husband, and our dog. The cargo area can hold all kinds of things even with the back seat still up! I even purchased a dog gate and it works great. Everyone who has seen or ridden in my car loves it and raves about it. However, I might consider buying a 4-wheel drive in the near future for safety reasons. Overall, I'm really happy with my purchase!
