2003 Dodge Sprinter problems

The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter is a light commercial vehicle (van) built by Mercedes-Benz Group AG of Stuttgart, Germany as a large van, chassis cab, minibus, and pickup truck. In the past, the Sprinter had been sold under the Mercedes-Benz, Dodge, and Freightliner nameplates. In the U.S., it was built from complete knock down (CKD) kits by Freightliner. Re-badged and re-engined Sprinters were also sold by Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles as the Volkswagen LT and the Volkswagen Crafter. They are now primarily marketed by Mercedes-Benz.

In the Mercedes-Benz van lineup, the Sprinter is the largest model offered, followed by the mid-size Vito (aka Viano, V-Class, and EQV) and small Citan.

First generation (1995–2006, T1N)

Europe

The first generation Sprinter was launched in Europe in 1995 to replace the famous but outdated T1 Transporter van dating from 1977. Compared to the T1, the Sprinter had reduced the aerodynamic drag and moved the engine 290 mm (11 in) further forward to increase cabin space. It was the first Mercedes-Benz product to carry a name rather than an alphanumeric designation. It was released with four-wheel disc brakes equipped with an antilock braking system and was driven by the most powerful diesel engine in its class, with a power output of 90 kW (120 hp). The Sprinter was voted International Van of the Year for 1995.

The styling was updated in 2000 and 2002, accompanied by technical changes that included standard electronic stability control (2002).

Common 2003 Dodge Sprinter problems

The Dodge Sprinter 2003, also known as the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, is a versatile and high-quality van that has gained popularity in recent years. However, like any vehicle, it can have certain issues that owners should be aware of. Here are some common problems with the Dodge Sprinter 2003, based on complaints from owners:

  • Glow Plug Failures: Glow plugs on T1N Sprinters can seize into the cylinder head, making replacement a major repair. The Engine Control Module (ECM) monitors the glow plugs, and can issue a fault for glow plug problems. However, glow plugs should not be replaced just upon the ECM fault codes, as these are often false.
  • Harmonic Balancer Issues: A very serious possible problem in 2001-2005 models, but hard to identify correctly, with many possible symptoms such as rough-running engine, lots of engine vibration which varies at different RPMs, damaged sensors, leaking crankshaft seals, etc.
  • Drive Shafts and Universals: Ensure that a mechanic checks the drive shafts and universal joints. Unlike many domestic vans, problems here can be fairly expensive.
  • Turbo Resonator: On heavily-loaded 2004-2006 Sprinter RV conversions, the plastic turbo resonators often failed, at least until the Q5 resonator (see sticker on resonator for model version). A new plastic OEM resonator is around $50.00, a Riordan aluminum replacement is about $140.00.
  • Rumble Strip Noise: The NAG1 automatic transmissions used in NAFTA T1N Sprinters commonly make some chattering like crossing a rumble strip. This may be worsened by incorrect tranny fluids (check your model year’s service manual for the correct specification number). A heavy shudder around 2000 RPM under load may mean that the transmission fluid should be changed. There is also now an aftermarket repair kit that may help resolve this.
  • Heater Fan: If the heater fan only works on high speed, the heater resistor has probably failed. The heater resistor is about $40, and you can easily replace this yourself.
  • Fuel Line Clips: Check the fuel line clips to make sure they are still holding the fuel lines in place. If the fuel lines are unclipped, they can wear through and begin leaking, and worn fuel lines can cause starting problems.
  • No Cold Air from the A/C: If the air conditioning won’t blow cold air, there might be a hole in the condenser. The condenser on T1N Sprinters is close to the ground, so this is a common issue with older T1N Sprinter vans.
  • Remote Door Locks: Make certain they are all in working order. You may just have to clean the door contact units.
  • Wiring Harness Wear: On some T1Ns using the OM647 engine, three bundles of wiring (the “loom”) cross a bracket next to the fuel filter and then are routed into the cabin. If the insulation on any of these bundles becomes worn through from rubbing across the bracket, it can cause random engine power loss or electrical problems.

It is important to note that these issues are not exclusive to the Dodge Sprinter 2003, and some of them may be found in other model years as well. Regular maintenance and inspections by a qualified mechanic can help prevent or detect these problems early on, potentially saving owners from major repairs.

  • Summary: I PURCHASED A 2003 DODGE INTREPID IN NOVEMBER OF 2005 AND THE CAR RUNS FINE UP UNTIL ABOUT A MONTH AND A HALF AGO. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AND THE CAR WOULD GET STUCK IN ONE GEAR AND MY RPM WOULD GO UP INTO THE RED LINE UNLESS I PULLED OVER AND RESTARTED THE CAR. OTHER TIMES IT WOULD GET STUCK AND THEN JERK INTO THE NEXT GEAR. THEN ABOUT FOUR DAYS AGO I WAS ON THE FREEWAY AND THE WHOLE CAR JUST SHUT OFF. I COULD NOT MOVE IT AND TRAFFIC WAS SPEEDING PAST ME AND A FEW HAD TO SLAM ON BREAKS TO AVOID HITTING ME AND MY TEN MONTH OLD DAUGHTER. I HAD TO HAVE SOME PEOPLE HELP ME TO PUSH IT OFF THE FREEWAY SO THAT I COULD RESTART IT TO MAKE IT BACK HOME. I AM VERY FRIGHTENED TO DRIVE NOW ESPECIALLY WITH MY DAUGHTER IN THE CAR BECAUSE I AM AFRAID THIS MAY HAPPEN AGAIN. I HAD THE CODES READ ON THE CAR AND ABOUT SEVEN CAME UP ALL POINTING TO DIFFERENT THINGS. A MECHANIC SUGGESTED THE TRANSMISSION ECM. THE ESTIMATED COST OF FIXING THIS IF IT IS THE PROBLEM IS ABOUT 750.00 DOLLARS. *TR

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2005-05-19
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: WE OPERATE 2 2003 DODGE SPRINTER PASSENGER VANS IN OUR AIRPORT SHUTTLE BUSINESS. ON THURSDAY, MAY 19TH WE HAD A VEHICLE JUST QUIT AFTER START-UP WHEN THE DRIVER STEPPED ON THE GAS. SHE RE-STARTED, DROVE A BLOCK, IT QUITS AGAIN. WE HAD 6 PASSENGERS ONBAORD TO GO TO THE AIRPORT. SHE COULD NOT MAKE THE VEHICLE RUN MORE THAN A FEW BLOCKS AND IF SHE STEPPED ON THE GAS TO ACCELERATE IT WOULD QUIT. WE TOWED IT TO THE DEALER AND THE NEXT DAY IT WAS DETERMINED THAT A WIRE BUNDLE THAT RUNS FROM THE ECU TO THE ENGINE, WHICH IS TIED WRAPPED TO 2 OTHER WIRE BUNDLES HAD CHAFFED RIGHT THRU THE PROTECTIVE NYLON COVER AND WORN THRU 2 OR 3 WIRES IN THE BUNDLE AND COMPLETELY THUR THE INTERNAL WIRE. THESE WIRES WERE THOSE THAT PROVIDED VOLTAGE TO THE FUEL INJECTORS AND HENCE THE FAILURE OF POWER. THE DEALER WAS ABLE TO SPLICE THE WIRES AND PUT ON A HEAVY DUTY PLASTIC WIRE BUNDLE WRAP, SIMILAR TOTHOSE USED ELSEWHERE IN THE VEHICLE. THE PROBLEM IS THAT THIS BUNDLE IS TIED WRAPPED TO THE LOWER FRAME OF THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT AND IS PROBABLY THAT WAY IN EVERY SPRINTER. SINCE OUR SPRINTERS HAVE ABOUT 190,000 MILES IN ONLY A YEAR AND A HALF, WE'VE OBVIOUSLY HAVE MORE TIME AND VIBRATION AND CHAFFING THAN NEARLY ANY IN THE COUNTRY SO WE ARE SEEING HIGH MILEAGE ISSUES THAT A NORMAL CONSUMER WILL PROBABLY NEVER SEE. HOWEVER, THIS INSTANT FAILURE COLD HAVE BEEN A DISASTER WE IF HAD BEEN ON THE FREEWAY GOING 70 MPH INSTEAD OF IN A RESIDENTIAL AREA. WE INSPECTED OUR OTHER SPRINTER AND IT HAS THE SAME WIRING CONCEPT BUT FOR SOME REASON THIS MAIN WIRE BUNDLE WAS NOT TIE WRAPPED TO THE FRAME AND DOES NOT APPEAR TO BE CHAFFED. WE ARE HAVING OUR MAINTENANCE PERSON CHECK IT ON MONDAY THE 23RD. THIS IS A TRUE SAFETY ISSUE THAT SHOULD RESULT IN AT LEAST A RECALL FOR INSPECTION OF THE WIRE BUNDLE FOR CHAFFING. IT WAS ABOUT A 3-4 HOUR REPAIR.

POWER TRAIN,TIRES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2004-08-06
  • VIN: WD5WD642535
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,TIRES
  • Summary: THIS STUFF IS DANGEROUS. I'VE LOST THREE TIRE VALVES IN LESS THAN 1000 MILES AND THE LAST WAS SUDDEN AND VIOLENT. HONESTLY, I THOUGHT I'D DONE SOMETHING WRONG, BUT I'VE USED ONLY MR. CLEAN WASH SYSTEM AND A VERY DILUTE DEGREASER ON THE WHEELS. IT WAS DIFFICULT TO TRY TO REMOVE THE STEMS WITHOUT FURTHER DAMAGING THE VALVES AT DISCOUNT BUT WE PERFOMRED A LITTLE EXPERIMENT BEFORE DISSEMBLING THE TIRE. WE RAN THE PSI UP TO 80 OFF THE VEHICLE AND WATCHED WHERE THE AIR ESCAPED THE VALVE. THERE IS A RUBBER COLLER THAT RUNS ABOUT 1/2 UP THE METAL VALVE STEM. THE AIR LEAKS FROM THE CIRCUMFERENCE OF THE SEAL WHERE THE RUBBER ENDS AND METAL BEGINS. HOWEVER, ANY SLIGHT PRESSURE OFF-CENTER RESULTS IN AIRFLOW FROM THE JUNCTION OF THE VALVE AND RIM. FURTHER PRESSURE EMPTIES THE TIRE PRETTY QUICK. THE FIRST TWO LEAKS WERE DISCOVERED HISSING IN PARKING LOTS AFTER A TRIP INTO A STORE. THE LAST, I LEFT MY DRIVEWAY, ALL WELL AND GOT ABOUT 1/16 MILE FROM THE HOUSE. THE VAN STARTED SHUDDERING AND WAS DIFFICULT TO CONTOL. I CALLED HOKE AND ASKED MY WIFE TO LOOK IN THE DRIVEWAY. I THOUGHT THAT I'D LOST ALL THE TRANSMISSION FLUID. THE TRUCK WAS REALLY FIGHTING. I NURSED THE VAN ALONG FOR APPROXIMATELY 100 FEET AND TURNED INTO A AUTO PARTS STORE. I GOT OUT, POPPPED THE HOOD AND LOOKED UNDER THE TRUCK FOR A LEAK. I WAS ON THE WAY INTO THE STORE BEFORE I NOTICED THAT DRIVER'S SIDE TIRE WAS COMPLETELY FLAT. I LAUGHED.*AK I NOW THINK THAT THE MB TRACTION CONTROL HAS NO IDEA WHAT TO DO WITH A FLAT AND MASKS THE PROBLEM, CONVERTING IT INTO A BIZARRE TRANNY TYPE PROBLEM. IT SOUND MORONIC TO NOT RELALIZE THAT YOU HAVE A FLAT ESPECIALLY AFTER YOU JUST HAD TWO IN THE FRONT, BUT THE REAR IS TOTALLY DIFFERENT. THE ONLY EXPLANATION IS THE TRACTION CONTROL. AND NOW I FIND OUT THAT THERE ARE MANY THAT HAVE HAD THE SAME EXPERIENCE...THIS IS SCARY. HOW MANY HAVE REPLACED THE VALVES? JP PE04066_CAT

Positive 2003 Dodge Sprinter car reviews

  1. Devante Douglas 2024-07-17

I own a medical transportation company and this van is just what my business needed. It starts at 30 below zero and has everything you would want. I can carry up to two wheelchairs at one time or one wheelchair and 6 passengers, not including myself, the driver. It is very easy to drive and the view is great. My clients just love this vehicle for the way it handles, not spongy like a regular van but real beefy. This is a vehicle for any business and is one I would recommend you looking at.

  2. Paolo Strosin 2024-06-20

Not only is this a great van for my construction business, but it's also a fantastic advertising tool since I'm the only one in my market with one! It's been working flawlessly so far and with 23+ MPG, it's much more cost-effective than a pickup truck outfitted for tools. I've turned it into my 'advervan' and business has picked up even in this down economy.

  3. Amir Weber 2024-02-17

I was looking for a vehicle that could last for at least a quarter million miles and offer 20+ MPG, and this was the only one I could find. Despite expecting some negative comments, I've received positive reactions from guys making gutteral Tim Allen sounds and carpool moms admiring the spaciousness. The bottom line is that I need a reliable car to be an integral part of my kids' lives for the next seven years, whether it's for carpooling, school trips, mission trips, sports team trips, and more. My wife is also confident that I didn't buy this large vehicle to 'pick up chicks'.
