The Toyota Matrix, officially named Toyota Corolla Matrix, is a compact hatchback manufactured by Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada in Cambridge, Ontario and derived from the Corolla. Introduced in 2002 as a 2003 model, the Matrix was the result of a joint venture between Toyota and General Motors, with the GM version being the Pontiac Vibe, which was assembled by New United Motor Manufacturing, Inc. (NUMMI) in Fremont, California, United States.

The Matrix was positioned as a sporty hatchback counterpart of the North American Corolla and was counted as a variant of it in Toyota's sales figures.

Although identical mechanically, and nearly as much internally, the Matrix and Vibe had different sheetmetal and exterior trim designed by their respective brands. Both vehicles are narrow, tall station wagons styled in a quasi-SUV fashion (called a crossover utility vehicle or "CUV" by Toyota) and marketed to a fairly youthful market segment. This type of car is also commonly referred to as a sport wagon.

First sold in February 2002, the Matrix saw a minor facelift for the 2005 model year, and was redesigned completely in 2008 for the 2009 model year, following the tenth generation Corolla. Sales of the Matrix were discontinued in the United States in 2013 and in Canada in 2014.

  • Summary: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain model year 2008-2011 Scion xB and Lexus IS F, 2009-2011 Toyota Corolla and Corolla Matrix, 2006-2011 Toyota Yaris, Lexus IS250 and Lexus IS350, 2010-2011 Toyota 4Runner, Lexus IS250C, Lexus IS350C and Lexus GX460, 2011 Sienna, 2007-2011 Lexus ES350, and 2009-2010 Pontiac Vibe vehicles, originally sold, or ever registered, in Alabama, California, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, Texas, Puerto Rico, American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands (Saipan), and the U.S. Virgin Islands, or "Zone A." Additionally, unless included in "Zone A" above, Toyota is recalling certain model year 2008 Scion xB and Lexus IS F, 2007-2008 Toyota Yaris, 2006-2008 Lexus IS250 and Lexus IS350 and 2007-2008 Lexus ES350 vehicles, originally sold, or ever registered, in Arizona, Arkansas, Delaware, District of Columbia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia, or "Zone B." Vehicles of these model years and models that were not originally sold or ever registered in either Zones A or B are not subject to this safety recall. These vehicles are equipped with certain air bag inflators assembled as part of the passenger frontal air bag modules, and used as original equipment or replacement equipment. In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the front air bags, these inflators may rupture due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to absolute humidity and temperature cycling.
  • Consequence: An inflator rupture may result in metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
  • Remedy: Toyota will notify the Toyota and Lexus owners. General Motors will contact the Pontiac owners. Depending on the model, dealers will replace the passenger frontal air bag inflator or the air bag assembly, free of charge. The recall began on December 6, 2016. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331. Toyota's numbers for interim notification for this campaign are G1P (Toyota Zone A), G1R (Toyota Zone B), G2G (Lexus Zone A), and G2H (Lexus Zone B). Toyota's numbers for final remedy for this campaign are G0P (Toyota Zone A), G0R (Toyota Zone B), GLG (Lexus Zone A), and GLH (Lexus Zone B).

THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL CAN GET STUCK IN THE WIDE OPEN POSITION DUE TO ITS BEING TRAPPED BY AN UNSECURED OR INCOMPATIBLE DRIVER'S FLOOR MAT. THIS RECALL IS AN EXPANSION OF A CAMPAIGN OF 3.8 MILLION OTHER TOYOTA VEHICLES ANNOUNCED IN 2009 FOR THE SAME ISSUE (SEE 09V-388).
  • Consequence: A STUCK OPEN ACCELERATOR PEDAL MAY RESULT IN VERY HIGH VEHICLE SPEEDS AND MAKE IT DIFFICULT TO STOP THE VEHICLE, WHICH COULD CAUSE A CRASH, SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH.
  • Remedy: TOYOTA WILL MODIFY OR REPLACE THE ACCELERATOR PEDALS ON THE SUBJECT VEHICLES. FLOOR SURFACE MODIFICATIONS ARE ALSO BEING CONSIDERED AND WILL BE INCLUDED FOR ANY MODEL FOR WHICH IT IS DEEMED APPROPRIATE. INITIALLY, DEALERS WILL BE INSTRUCTED ON HOW TO RESHAPE THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL FOR THE REPAIR. AS REPLACEMENT PARTS WITH THE SAME SHAPE AS THE MODIFIED PEDAL BECOME AVAILABLE, THEY WILL BE MADE AVAILABLE TO THE DEALERS FOR THE REPAIR. In my opinion, the Toyota Matrix falls short in many ways. The car has a history of constant major repairs with very high replacement parts costs. The use of steel bolts into plastic has caused corrosion and breakage throughout the car. Additionally, the automatic transmission fluid leak from the trans oil cooler lines is a common issue that can result in a costly dealer bill. However, if you are innovative and have the tools and experience of a good backyard mechanic, this car can be a great option. Overall, I would not recommend the Toyota Matrix for those looking for a low-cost car to maintain and rely on a dealer. This car requires a hands-on approach to maintenance and repairs.Toyota's engineering and reliability have not met my expectations due to immature and poor engineering practices and a lack of focus on materials engineering disciplines.

    I originally bought this car to replace my old hatchback with something more reliable and fuel efficient. I opted for the 1.8L engine and initially, it met my expectations. However, I started experiencing issues once I hit the 50000 mile mark. Unfortunately, I have had to visit the dealership service center over 5 times for major repairs, all of which are documented in Service Bulletins. The latest issue affects all Matrix and Corollas with the 1.8L engine and will not be covered after the 60000 mile warranty runs out. The engine components of the crankshaft assembly need to be replaced, which is concerning. Overall, I am disappointed with the reliability of this car.

    I recently traded in my 2007 Yaris HB for the Matrix. While the Yaris was great for city driving, it didn't quite cut it as a roadmaster. During my search, I test drove a Rabbit, but it felt small compared to the Matrix, which has a more substantial feel. The car is very comfortable on long drives and I'm happy to report that I'm getting exactly the advertised 29.5 mpg on the highway and 20 mpg in the city. Overall, I feel that the Matrix offers great value for the money and I'm very pleased with my purchase. In comparison to the Yaris, the Matrix feels much more solid and safe.

    This car is fantastic! I absolutely love it! The only thing I could ask for is a bit more power, but that's just my love for V8 engines talking. I'm a bit confused when people say that the car has blind spots because I haven't experienced any. I did add on some little 1-inch bubble mirrors for extra help, but I usually add those to all my cars. The get-up-and-go is amazing, especially when you disengage the traction control and let the tires screech a bit. The ride in the XRS is a bit hard, but I think that's because of the stiff sports suspension. The car can be a bit loud on the road, but that's typical of Toyotas. If you add some dynamat from your local car audio shop, you'll enjoy the car even more. I'm 6'2

    I got this car over a year ago to replace my first car, an Oldsmobile that broke down at least once a month. As a young girl in college, I wanted something reliable that also looked nice. I absolutely love the unique look of the XRS, the interior is so comfy, and everything is super easy to use. I know some people aren't happy with the gas mileage in the 2.4L but it's fine for me, I get about 30mpg on the highway. I also LOVE how much space it has; I was even able to haul a full-size mattress in it! The only thing I would say is that it's a little cheaply made... the paint flakes off the hood way too easily and the interior scratches very easily. But other than that, I have no complaints. This car is just what I needed.

    I was on the hunt for a new car to give my 2001 Trooper a break during my work commute. I test drove a variety of cars, from BMW X3's to the Nissan Cube, but was feeling disappointed. Then, I had the pleasure of driving a 2009 Matrix XRS with only 10k miles on it... and WOW! Within just 5 minutes, I knew I had found the perfect car. It's comfortable for my 6-foot frame, sporty, fun to drive, relatively economical, and surprisingly practical for its exterior dimensions. It's been 3 months since the purchase, and my wife and I are still thrilled with the car. We have some long (400+ mile) trips coming up, and we're looking forward to them. Toyota did a great job with this one!
