Toyota Land cruiser problems

The Toyota Land Cruiser (Japanese: トヨタ・ランドクルーザー, Hepburn: Toyota Rando-Kurūzā) (also sometimes spelled as LandCruiser) is a series of four-wheel drive vehicles produced by the Japanese automobile manufacturer Toyota. It is Toyota's longest running series of models. As of 2019, the sales of the Land Cruiser totalled more than 10 million units worldwide.

Production of the first generation of the Land Cruiser began in 1951. The Land Cruiser has been produced in convertible, hardtop, station wagon and cab chassis body styles. The Land Cruiser's reliability and longevity have led to huge popularity, especially in Australia, where it is the best-selling body-on-frame, four-wheel drive vehicle. Toyota also extensively tests the Land Cruiser in the Australian outback – considered to be one of the toughest operating environments in both temperature and terrain. In Japan, the Land Cruiser was once exclusive to Toyota Japanese dealerships called Toyota Store.

Since 1990, the smaller variation of the Land Cruiser has been marketed as the Land Cruiser Prado. Described as a 'light-duty' version of the Land Cruiser by Toyota, it features a different design compared to the full-size model and, up until 2023, it remains the only comfort-oriented Land Cruiser available with a short-wheelbase 3-door version.

As of 2023, the full-size Land Cruiser was available in many markets. Exceptions include the United States (since 2021), Canada (since 1996), Malaysia (which receives the Lexus LX instead), Hong Kong, Macau, South Korea, Brazil, and most of Europe. In Europe, the only countries where the full-size Land Cruiser is officially sold are Gibraltar, Moldova, Russia, Belarus, and Ukraine. The Land Cruiser is hugely popular in the Middle East, Russia, and Australia, and also in Africa where it is used by farmers, the construction industry, non-governmental and humanitarian organizations, the United Nations, national armies (often the pickup version), and irregular armed groups who turn them into "technicals" by mounting machine guns in the rear. In August 2019, cumulative global sales of the Land Cruiser family surpassed 10 million units.

Common Toyota Land cruiser problems

The Toyota Land Cruiser is known for its reliability, with many owners reporting high mileage and minimal issues. However, certain model years have been identified as problematic, with specific issues affecting their performance and longevity.

The 1999 Toyota Land Cruiser is one such model year, with a high number of reported problems, particularly with the service brakes. Several owners have reported instances where the brakes suddenly stopped functioning, posing a significant safety risk.

The 2002 Toyota Land Cruiser also has a reputation for reliability issues, with 16 problems reported, including vehicle speed control, engine/engine cooling, and build quality concerns. Similar to the 1999 model, the 2002 Land Cruiser has experienced issues with vehicle speed control, with some drivers reporting sudden acceleration at low speeds. This can be a particularly dangerous situation, as it can lead to loss of control over the vehicle. Furthermore, engine cooling problems have been reported, with some owners experiencing sudden power loss and engine shutdown.

The 2008 Toyota Land Cruiser, while not plagued by major mechanical issues, has faced problems related to its air conditioning system and airbags. The faulty A/C system and airbags in the 2008 model have been linked to the notorious Takata airbag scandal, which affected tens of millions of vehicles. The defective airbags have the potential to explode during deployment, causing metal shards to be sprayed into the cabin, posing a severe safety risk.

In addition to these specific model year issues, the Toyota Land Cruiser has experienced common problems across various model years. These include rough shifting, particularly in the 2016 model, where the eight-speed automatic transmission tends to vibrate excessively when switching between gears. This issue affects both upshifting and downshifting and can manifest at high RPMs and low speeds.

Furthermore, the 2011 Toyota Land Cruiser has been known to leave passengers stranded due to unexpected engine failure. The engine is reported to give out while driving, with dealership technicians unable to identify the exact cause of the problem in many cases.

These common problems and specific model year issues highlight the importance of thorough research and inspection before purchasing a Toyota Land Cruiser. While the vehicle is generally reliable, certain model years and components may require extra attention and maintenance.

  • Summary: Fuel tank develops crack and leaks when filled more than 10 gallons approx 1/2 full. There is a specific point on the tank where it cracks on top. The metal is very thin at this point and possibly with newer Ethanol fuels the tank expands and contracts far more in hot weather? This problem is well documented on Toyota Land Cruiser websites, specifically IH8MUD.com. The website is telling owners to log complaints with NHTSA. I would think leaking gas is a major safety issue along with being an emissions violation. Yes the vehicle is available for inspection. Manufacturer gives no response. The FJ 60/62 Land Cruiser (model before, did have a recall on the fuel tank) No warning lamps or messages OBD2.

This has been present with the 80, 100, 200 series vehicles plus the Toyota Tundra, Lexus GX and Lexus LX. There are a frightening number complaints about this. Just google Landcruiser, Tundra, Lexus GX, Lexus LX and fuel boil. I'm not quite sure why so many people like Toyotas. Personally, I'm going to get a Tahoe this time. It has a better engine and I'd rather support an American company. I learned my lesson.

The Land Cruiser is a solid performer both on and off the road, with plenty of power and reliable braking. It would be great to have front console cup holder lighting for night time driving, as well as lit overhead spotlight buttons. I've been getting a combined 17.2 mpg in the city and on the highway using premium fuel. While the exterior sheet metal seems a little thin, the vehicle is still sturdy. I did experience a clunking noise from the rear when starting from a dead stop or coming to a stop, but after visiting my Toyota dealer, I found out that a (TSB) Technical Service Bulletin had been issued for this problem. The drive shaft was replaced under drivetrain warranty at no cost, and since then, I have had no further issues. Overall, I am very satisfied with the new Land Cruiser!

You won't believe the reliability of this Land Cruiser! It's the last one manufactured by Land Cruiser and it's held up incredibly well. Even after 188,000 miles, everything is still tight and looks great. I've only had to replace a power steering motor and window motors. The tires are also amazing - they don't wear out even after 100k miles and there's no side wear. Plus, the steering is true and solid.

Hi there! I wanted to share my thoughts on our trusty 94 Land Crusher. It has been an absolute gem and I can confidently say that it's the best investment I've ever made in a car, especially a used one. Despite the recent surge in fuel prices, my wife and I explored all our options and couldn't justify replacing a perfectly good vehicle. We're actually the second owners of this beauty, and the previous owner was a true soccer mom. In fact, they only drove it for 10,000 miles over two years! When we bought it, it had 104,000 miles on it and was in pristine condition with all the records. We mainly use it to haul boats, camping gear, and of course, our butts! We even put the largest tires on it that would fit, and it's still going strong with 135,000 miles on it. Thanks for letting me share!

I was considering between the Land-Cruiser and a Mercedes GL450. I have owned four Land-Cruisers before and was a bit nervous about the reliability of the Mercedes. Unfortunately, the Land-Cruiser turned out to be a disaster. The day I drove it home, I could tell there was an alignment issue and constant corrections were needed. I took it to my local shop and they confirmed that the rear axle was off almost a full degree. Toyota confirmed the issue and attempted to repair it using a 'come-a-long' strap to force the rear axle into alignment, which only created more problems. After getting the vehicle back, it had even worse alignment readings due to the excessive force that was placed on the rear suspension. I filed a complaint with Toyota and after a few weeks, they told me that no further repairs were needed. I was furious and received no support from Toyota or my dealer, Carson Toyota. However, I hired an attorney and he won my case, and I was awarded all my money back. It is important to note that this rear axle issue is a common known problem with the Land-Cruiser and Tundras. Therefore, I highly recommend getting it on an alignment rack before putting your money down on one of these.

My family and I refer to this vehicle as 'the tank'. This is actually my second Land Cruiser, the first being a 1995 model that unfortunately had a bad head gasket and would overheat. Despite my attempts to repair it with my local technician, it was to no avail. However, I am now the proud owner of a used 2004 model and I definitely enjoy the fact that it does not hydroplane on slick roads of ice, snow, and water when compared to other SUVs such as the Mercedes G-Wagon, Tahoes, Suburbans, and Explorers (all 4x4). While it may not be the most fuel efficient SUV, in my 40 years of driving it has to be the best for overall activities of commuting, trips to the beach, and traveling through the mountains. The power and second added mode of transmission give it the extra boost for passing and climbing. Although the sound system needs to be replaced and the rear viewing camera is a bit cloudy, the rear AC and heating are a great service to my kids for added comfort. I have had to replace and/or repair a battery, wipers, air bag recall (free), hood supports, and tires (common wear and tear). It is a classy vehicle that still retains its appeal after 15 years. I did have to superglue my plastic covering over the luggage rack due to sun exposure. I would highly recommend replacing the front window rubber seal after years of replacing cracked windows. In my opinion, you cannot go wrong with this Land Cruiser if you want reliability, durability, and of course, safety!

I have owned my Landcruiser for 3 years now and I can confidently say that it has been flawless. The engine runs smoothly, the body quality is still excellent, and I have only had to change the brake pads, fuel filters, and oil, of course! If you are looking for a new Nissan or similar, I would highly recommend a used Landcruiser. It has a timing chain, so you can forget about the timing belt issues that come with other trucks. Although it could use more front legroom and cup holders, those are small prices to pay for everything else you get. Let me know if you have any questions!

The original running gear is powered by a very strong 4.7L V-8 engine. Regular maintenance includes periodic replacements of plugs, shocks, TB/WP three times, 4X4 bearing packs, front stabilizer bars, Toyota 84 month battery, fuel injectors, valve cover gaskets, fuel injector kit, radiator T-hose (which was quite an experience), power steering pressure hose, number 8 coil, brake pads and calipers, muffler, and engine cam seals. I may have missed a few things, but the major costs were just two: brakes master cylinder module (OEM $1600) and steering rack assembly ($1200). If you take care of it, it will take care of you. It's a daily driver that can take you to a movie on Tuesday and serious 4-wheeling on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. You get the idea, right?

I bought my Land Cruiser in pretty bad shape, but I had the engine gone through from every seal and hose, and everything in between. Although the initial investment to get it running right cost a lot, I could not be happier. In the time since then, I have added a new paint job, all original, new tires, battery, and went through the interior to replace missing parts. One modification I would recommend to everyone is to switch it to partial 4WD. This allows for 2WD during the summer or non-bad weather/roads. I bought my kit for the front differential and hubs from Australia for about $500, and the labor brought everything to under $1000.00. This has saved me tons of money. It's a great investment!

This is my second TLC and I must say, it's a huge improvement from the 2012 model. The adaptive cruise control is much better and not overly sensitive like the previous version. The lane departure warnings and driver alert warnings are very useful safety features. I even had an experience where the automatic brake system saved me from a potentially expensive accident! The car is super quiet on the highway and makes long drives very comfortable. Although I traded in a vehicle that had better fuel mileage, the ownership costs of a Toyota are among the best. I've had other SUVs like the Audi Q7 that required frequent service visits and brake jobs every 12000 miles, but the LandCruiser is expected to be both reliable and cheap to maintain. While it would be nice if the 3rd row folded flat into the floor, I'd rather have the toughness and reliability of the TLC. The split tailgate is also very useful in real life situations. The roof hardware is very sturdy and doesn't require any additional support brackets. Overall, this is the finest large SUV out there! People who appreciate quality and need an off-road capable, snow/ice capable, towing capable, night on the town capable, kid capable - large SUV will love their LandCruiser. Those who want the valet to park it out front will get a Range Rover. The only thing that could be improved is the addition of Wifi like American vehicles. It's been 10k more miles and everything is still the same. The leather on the seats could be a little richer feeling given the cost of the truck, but I have had no problems whatsoever from this high-quality SUV.undefined
