1996 Toyota Land cruiser problems
The Toyota Land Cruiser (Japanese: トヨタ・ランドクルーザー, Hepburn: Toyota Rando-Kurūzā) (also sometimes spelled as LandCruiser) is a series of four-wheel drive vehicles produced by the Japanese automobile manufacturer Toyota. It is Toyota's longest running series of models. As of 2019, the sales of the Land Cruiser totalled more than 10 million units worldwide.
Production of the first generation of the Land Cruiser began in 1951. The Land Cruiser has been produced in convertible, hardtop, station wagon and cab chassis body styles. The Land Cruiser's reliability and longevity have led to huge popularity, especially in Australia, where it is the best-selling body-on-frame, four-wheel drive vehicle. Toyota also extensively tests the Land Cruiser in the Australian outback – considered to be one of the toughest operating environments in both temperature and terrain. In Japan, the Land Cruiser was once exclusive to Toyota Japanese dealerships called Toyota Store.
Since 1990, the smaller variation of the Land Cruiser has been marketed as the Land Cruiser Prado. Described as a 'light-duty' version of the Land Cruiser by Toyota, it features a different design compared to the full-size model and, up until 2023, it remains the only comfort-oriented Land Cruiser available with a short-wheelbase 3-door version.
As of 2023, the full-size Land Cruiser was available in many markets. Exceptions include the United States (since 2021), Canada (since 1996), Malaysia (which receives the Lexus LX instead), Hong Kong, Macau, South Korea, Brazil, and most of Europe. In Europe, the only countries where the full-size Land Cruiser is officially sold are Gibraltar, Moldova, Russia, Belarus, and Ukraine. The Land Cruiser is hugely popular in the Middle East, Russia, and Australia, and also in Africa where it is used by farmers, the construction industry, non-governmental and humanitarian organizations, the United Nations, national armies (often the pickup version), and irregular armed groups who turn them into "technicals" by mounting machine guns in the rear. In August 2019, cumulative global sales of the Land Cruiser family surpassed 10 million units.

After 9K miles in four months, I am still in awe of this vehicle. I picked this over brand new Envoy/TrailBlazer and Yukon/Tahoe and I am very happy with my choice. The extremely capable full time 4 wheel drive did not skip a beat during some fairly adverse winter driving conditions. I am already thinking in terms of the

I bought a 96' off ebay with 78000 miles 4 years ago and it has been overall very solid. While it does tend to burn oil at a rate of about a quart every 2000 miles, it is still very reliable. The only critique I have is that I'm only 5'10 and the seat doesn't go back far enough for my liking. However, I would buy one again and again. At 80000 miles, the catalytic converter went out, but the dealer replaced it for free. Although the mileage is terrible at 12 city and 16 hwy, you can buy parts online for cheaper. I changed my tires and pads myself for a very cheap $20 per axle with a lifetime warranty from Autozone. If you want to pull anything with it, I'd suggest getting heavy duty shocks.

This is definitely the best SUV I have ever had the pleasure of owning and driving. It is as solid as a rock and I feel confident that my family is very safe in it. I have put 175,000 miles on mine and have only had to do about $400 worth of repair work, in addition to the usual oil changes and a recent set of new tires.

I purchased my 1996 LC with 40000 miles in 2000 and it quickly became my primary luxury car. However, when my first child turned 16 in 2002, it had already accumulated 110000 miles and it was time to pass it on. My son and I added a brush guard to make it even more rugged and off he went. Over the years, as each of our three daughters turned 16, they too had the privilege of learning to drive in this marvelous, gas-guzzling, oil-devouring beast. Despite its age and mileage, the LC has proven to be a reliable and safe vehicle, having seen us through countless adventures and challenges. Even after 285000 miles and four teenagers, it still runs like a dream and recently proved its worth in the snow. Thank you, Toyota, for creating such a tough, comfortable, and dependable car.

I'm so glad to hear that you've had such a positive experience with your car! Although it may not have the best gas mileage and may eat through brakes, it's great to hear that it's been reliable for you. It's impressive that in over 100000 miles, the only repair needed was a blown head gasket. It sounds like you've got a real gem on your hands!

I am confident in stating that the maintenance costs of this vehicle are higher than expected. Despite purchasing the vehicle used at 78k miles, the catalytic converters had to be replaced at 86k miles, along with the front knuckle seals which cost a staggering $1200. Although the dealer covered the converters under warranty, the VSV valve is now faulty and will cost over $400 to repair.

I bought the Land Cruiser because I heard of its great reliability. It has been a good car, able to haul kids up skiing and having no trouble with snow. However, I have had some issues with maintenance. It goes through brake pads and rotors quite quickly, and I have had to replace the rotors twice in just 80,000 miles. Additionally, I had the head gasket blow out in Vail, which was extremely expensive. I have spent far more on maintenance for this car than any other I've owned, including my Fords. Despite these issues, I still leave it in the garage except to haul kids skiing. Overall, I have mixed feelings about my LC, but it has served its purpose well.
