The Toyota Land Cruiser (Japanese: トヨタ・ランドクルーザー, Hepburn: Toyota Rando-Kurūzā) (also sometimes spelled as LandCruiser) is a series of four-wheel drive vehicles produced by the Japanese automobile manufacturer Toyota. It is Toyota's longest running series of models. As of 2019, the sales of the Land Cruiser totalled more than 10 million units worldwide.

Production of the first generation of the Land Cruiser began in 1951. The Land Cruiser has been produced in convertible, hardtop, station wagon and cab chassis body styles. The Land Cruiser's reliability and longevity have led to huge popularity, especially in Australia, where it is the best-selling body-on-frame, four-wheel drive vehicle. Toyota also extensively tests the Land Cruiser in the Australian outback – considered to be one of the toughest operating environments in both temperature and terrain. In Japan, the Land Cruiser was once exclusive to Toyota Japanese dealerships called Toyota Store.

Since 1990, the smaller variation of the Land Cruiser has been marketed as the Land Cruiser Prado. Described as a 'light-duty' version of the Land Cruiser by Toyota, it features a different design compared to the full-size model and, up until 2023, it remains the only comfort-oriented Land Cruiser available with a short-wheelbase 3-door version.

As of 2023, the full-size Land Cruiser was available in many markets. Exceptions include the United States (since 2021), Canada (since 1996), Malaysia (which receives the Lexus LX instead), Hong Kong, Macau, South Korea, Brazil, and most of Europe. In Europe, the only countries where the full-size Land Cruiser is officially sold are Gibraltar, Moldova, Russia, Belarus, and Ukraine. The Land Cruiser is hugely popular in the Middle East, Russia, and Australia, and also in Africa where it is used by farmers, the construction industry, non-governmental and humanitarian organizations, the United Nations, national armies (often the pickup version), and irregular armed groups who turn them into "technicals" by mounting machine guns in the rear. In August 2019, cumulative global sales of the Land Cruiser family surpassed 10 million units.

Common 2006 Toyota Land cruiser problems

Based on complaints from owners of the Toyota Land Cruiser 2006, several common problems have been reported:

  • Power Steering Pump Failure:
    • Many older Toyota Land Cruisers, particularly those built between 1990-1998 and 2000, tend to experience power steering pump failure around 125,000-150,000 miles. A worn-out pump is prone to leaks, which can affect the Land Cruiser's power steering functionality.
  • Electrical Junction Block Failure:
    • Some Toyota Land Cruiser model years encounter issues with power windows and mirrors due to a failing electrical junction block. This block, responsible for distributing electricity to these components, may fail in older vehicles, causing inconvenience in adjusting these parts.
  • Rough Idle and Poor Performance (All Models Using AdBlue):
    • Land Cruiser models using AdBlue have reported rough idling, decreased driving performance, and an illuminated exhaust warning light. This issue is often linked to a malfunctioning EGR valve, hindering the N0x treatment system.
  • Automatic Gearbox Problems:
    • The Land Cruiser is known to have issues with the automatic gearbox, leading to difficulties in gear changes. This problem can be complex and may require professional attention, potentially involving the replacement of selectors.
  • Air Conditioning Problems:
    • Owners have faced air conditioning issues where the system fails to work on all settings, usually caused by a fractured pipe. Identifying and replacing the fractured pipe is necessary to resolve this problem.
  • Bonnet Strap Failure:
    • The bonnet straps in the Land Cruiser have been known to fail, particularly in instances where they are unable to support the weight of the bonnet when open. Replacing the bonnet straps is essential to address this issue.

These common problems reported by owners of the Toyota Land Cruiser 2006 highlight various mechanical and electrical issues that can impact the performance and functionality of this vehicle.

Negative 2006 Toyota Land cruiser car reviews

  1. Emory Carroll 2024-08-02

The navigation system has not been functioning since the purchase. Despite attempts by two separate dealerships to get it to operate, it has not been successful. It appears that the mechanics were not familiar with the system's operation. The instructions provided were found to be confusing and inadequate.

  2. Henri Langosh 2024-06-27

Overall, you have a nice car. However, you may find it difficult to access the CD changer and understand how to use the DVD player.

  3. Cecil Bauch 2024-04-22

Overall, I am pleased with this vehicle and I hope it lives up to its reputation for reliability. However, after driving it for a few months, I have noticed that it lacks some basic features that one would expect in a $60K luxury SUV. It feels a bit basic and outdated in comparison to other models on the market. I have nicknamed it the dinosaur, but I still appreciate its reliability.

Positive 2006 Toyota Land cruiser car reviews

  1. Jamir DuBuque 2025-01-07

This is definitely the most comfortable vehicle I have ever owned. Although I have owned Mercedes, Jeeps, Hondas and Toyotas in the past, I have never owned a Land Cruiser before. The other day, I was at an outdoor festival and we parked in the grass. It started to pour down rain and soaked everything. When we were leaving, there were lots of SUVs which were spinning their wheels in mud and grass, but we had no problem in the grassy field or going through the mud. The best part was that I didn't even have to switch to 4-wheel drive since it is in it full time. I absolutely love this vehicle.

  2. Keegan Okuneva 2024-11-03

We drove it all, but nothing came close to the fit and finish of the Land Cruiser. The ride and handling are superb, not to mention the reliability and durability. The Land Cruiser now boasts more horsepower at 275. This SUV is smooth, quiet, and solid. If you can afford it, go for it. Sure, other SUVs may have a little more room, but none can match the quality of the Land Cruiser.

  3. Haley Ratke 2024-10-25

Looking for a dependable and versatile SUV that can handle any terrain without any weaknesses? Look no further than the Land Cruiser! I've taken it off-road and it handled like a dream, while still providing a smooth ride on the road. Plus, I've had no significant reliability issues. While I considered Land Rover products, I had concerns about their reliability. The new V8 engine provides great acceleration for this class of vehicle.

  4. Elmore Fahey 2024-10-21

Refined, quite, smooth and powerful. Supberb fit and finish. The Cruiser is excellent on interstate or pot holes. Its confidence inspiring brakes and acceleration make it a joy to drive. As someone who has owned both a 4-wheel Ford Explorer and an all-time-4 Range Rover, I can say that while they may be technically superior today, I cannot imagine loving any vehicle like my Cruiser.

  5. Aidan Turcotte 2024-10-18

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my 2002 Landcruiser. I absolutely love it! I did try trading it in for a 2005 BMW X5, but unfortunately, it didn't work out. The fuel gauge never worked properly and it just stopped one day. However, Toyota came to the rescue and gave me a 2006 version. Even though it wasn't the right fit for me, I'm so happy to be back in my Landcruiser. It's great on long trips, handles like a dream, and I've had absolutely no problems with it. As a single female, reliability is number one for me. Thanks for listening!
