2003 Toyota Corolla problems
The Toyota Corolla (Japanese: トヨタ・カローラ, Hepburn: Toyota Karōra) is a series of compact cars (formerly subcompact) manufactured and marketed globally by the Japanese automaker Toyota Motor Corporation. Introduced in 1966, the Corolla was the best-selling car worldwide by 1974 and has been one of the best-selling cars in the world since then. In 1997, the Corolla became the best-selling nameplate in the world, surpassing the Volkswagen Beetle. Toyota reached the milestone of 50 million Corollas sold over twelve generations in 2021.
The name Corolla is part of Toyota's naming tradition of using names derived from the Toyota Crown for sedans, with "corolla" Latin for "small crown". The Corolla has always been exclusive in Japan to Toyota Corolla Store locations, and manufactured in Japan with a twin, called the Toyota Sprinter until 2000. From 2006 to 2018 in Japan and much of the world, and from 2018 to 2020 in Taiwan, the hatchback companion had been called the Toyota Auris.
Early models were mostly rear-wheel drive, while later models have been front-wheel drive. Four-wheel drive versions have also been produced, and it has undergone several major redesigns. The Corolla's traditional competitors have been the Nissan Sunny, introduced the same year as the Corolla in Japan and the later Nissan Sentra, Nissan Sylphy, Honda Civic and Mitsubishi Lancer. The Corolla's chassis designation code is "E", as described in Toyota's chassis and engine codes.

Common 2003 Toyota Corolla problems
The 2003 Toyota Corolla has been praised for its roomy interior, fuel-efficient performance, peppy acceleration, tight handling, and nimble body design. However, there are a few common problems that have been reported by owners of this car.
One of the most common problems with the 2003 Toyota Corolla is airbag-related issues. In fact, airbags have been the leading cause for concern in the 2003 Corolla, generating 355 complaints, nearly half of the total 756 on file with the NHTSA, and 8 recalls. The problem you're likely to run into is going to be a recall parts shortage. If your Corolla hasn't already been repaired, you might wind up on a waiting list.
Transmission problems are another issue that has been reported by some owners of the 2003 Toyota Corolla. Thankfully, transmission problems are scarce, with just 66 reports on file. However, a driver reported in 2014 that the transmission blew as they started to accelerate from a green light, and a few others have reported rattling noises.
A rare but seriously concerning issue sees the engine overheating as a result of coolant leak. This usually points to a cracked engine block, which will cost you more than the car itself to replace. All you can really do about this is keep an eye on the engine temperature during the test drive.
Despite these issues, the 2003 Toyota Corolla is known for its reliability. The most expensive repair you'll likely be covering will be a new exhaust pipe starting at $668.
In terms of technology, the 2003 Toyota Corolla's entertainment technology is outdated but satisfactory. The entry-level CE comes with a CD player, and safety technology is likewise outdated but solid for a car from 2003, featuring a then-cutting-edge passenger airbag and passenger restraint system.
Overall, while there are some common problems with the 2003 Toyota Corolla, it is still a reliable car that can last for many years with proper maintenance.

AIR BAGS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-07-11
- VIN: 2T1BR32E23C
- Components: AIR BAGS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: I received a recall notice, scheduled an appointment and then went to Bev Smith Toyota in Fort Pierce, FL. My appointment was for 9:30 AM. I decided that as long as I was there, I would get my oil changed (normally I do not use dealer oil changes because they are expensive, but since I was there anyway...). At 11:10, I was presented the bill for the oil change and told that they refused to service the airbag. There was some garbage on the floor of the passenger side that the service manager claimed rendered my vehicle unsafe to work on. I pointed out that no one asked me to clean out the front seat when I scheduled the appointment, that the items were there at 9:30 when received the car, and that the car apparently was safe enough for them to perform an overpriced oil change. I offered to remove the items (it later took me all of 3 minutes to clear the area). The service manager refused and refused to complete the recall work. He still demanded payment for the oil change and was unwilling to compensate me for my wasted time.

- Summary: My car is accelerating when my foot is off of the pedal and when in park, it is revving like I am pressing down on the gas pedal. I put it in reverse to test it to make sure I was experiencing what I just thought had happened. As soon as I put the gear in reverse, and released my foot from the break, the car spead down my driveway. I breaked, put gear in drive, and when I released my foot from the break pedal, again it sped up almost crashing into my house. When I put the car in park, the engine became louder as if I was pressing down on the gas pedal. I checked the pedals below. The rug or nothing else was near the pedal, as can happen at times. This morning I tested it out again on my way to work. It was a repeat of yesterday. The car is speeding up without me putting my foot on the drive pedal, by me simply lifting my foot of of the break. And when I park, it gets loud as if I am pressing on the gas pedal. This is very dangerous and I am afraid to drive my car until I can get it to a mechanic.

- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE
- Summary: I'VE TRIED TO REPORT BOTH ITEMS TO TYSONS TOYOTA IN THE PAST. THE DRIVER SIDE WINDOW HAS "EXPLODED" IN, ONCE WHILE I WAS IN THE CAR. I'M ON MY THIRD WINDOW AND IT RATTLES WHEN THE WINDOW IS PARTIALLY OPEN. I FEAR ANOTHER EXPLOSION. SECOND, THE PAINT ON THIS BLUE CAR HAS RUSTED AND PEELED ON THE ROOF AND TRUNK. WHEN I GOOGLED THE YEAR, MAKE, MODEL, AND COLOR, THERE ARE THOUSANDS OF 2003-04 CARS EXPERIENCING THE SAME DEFECT. DESPITE BEING AN OLDER CAR, THERE ARE MANY STILL ON THE ROAD. TOYOTA CLAIMS THERE WAS NO PROBLEM. HOWEVER, WITH SO MANY OCCURANCES, ONE WOULD THINK TOYOTA WOULD LOOK INTO THE QUALITY OF BLUE PAINT USED. IT WOULD COST OVER $900 JUST TO HAVE THE ROOF AND TRUNK REPAIRED AND REPAINTED. THE SIDE BACK PANELS ARE NOW BEGINNING TO RUST. I SAW WHERE SEQUOIA WHITE SUVS WERE AFFORDED FREE REPAINTING BECAUSE OF A SIMILAR ISSUE. (IF SOMEONE CAN AFFORD A SEQUOIA, THEY COULD PROBABLY AFFORD TO GET THEIR CARS REPAINTED!)

- Summary: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) notified the agency on May 13, 2015, that they are recalling 2005-2007 Lexus SC, Toyota Corolla, Corolla Matrix, Sequoia, and Pontiac Vibe, and 2005-2006 Toyota Tundra vehicles that were originally sold, or ever registered, in Florida, along the Gulf Coast, Puerto Rico, Hawaii, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, Saipan and American Samoa. On June 16, 2015 Toyota expanded the recall to cover an additional 769,055 vehicles, including certain model year 2002-2004 Lexus SC, Toyota Sequoia, 2003-2004 Toyota Corolla Matrix, Toyota Corolla, Pontiac Vibe, and Toyota Tundra vehicles, as well the vehicles covered by the May 13, 2015 notification in the portions of Georgia, Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas that were not previously included. The inflators in the front passenger air bags are susceptible to rupture in the event of a crash necessitating the deployment of the front passenger air bag.
- Consequence: In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the passenger's frontal air bag, the inflator could rupture with metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants potentially resulting in serious injury or death.
- Remedy: 2003-2004 Corolla and Corolla Matrix vehicles that are recalled under both 15V-043 and 15V-286 are under a Do Not Drive advisory. Owners of these vehicles are advised not to drive their vehicles until the recall remedy has been completed. Toyota will notify their owners. Pontiac Vibe owners will be notified by GM. Dealers will replace the passenger side front air bag, free of charge. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331. Toyota began the recall on July 13, 2015. - Manufacturer: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) notified the agency on May 13, 2015 that they are recalling certain model year 2004 Sequoia vehicles manufactured August 18, 2003, to August 19, 2004, and 2003-2004 Tundra vehicles manufactured March 18, 2003, to August 25, 2004. On June 16, 2015, Toyota expanded the recall to include an additional 1,270,468 vehicles, including model year 2002-2003 and 2005-2007 Sequoia, 2005-2006 Tundra, 2003-2007 Corolla, 2003-2007 Corolla Matrix, 2003-2007 Pontiac Vibe and 2002-2007 Lexus SC vehicles. This is to address a safety defect in the passenger side frontal air bag inflator which may produce excessive internal pressure causing the inflator to rupture upon deployment of the air bag. This recall addresses both the passenger side frontal air bags that were originally installed in the vehicles, as well as replacement air bags that may have been installed as replacement service parts. A replacement air bag may have been installed, as one example, if a vehicle had been in a crash necessitating the replacement of the passenger side frontal air bag.
- Consequence: In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the passenger's frontal air bag, the inflator could rupture with metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants potentially resulting in serious injury or death.
- Remedy: 2003-2004 Corolla and Corolla Matrix vehicles that are recalled under both 15V-043 and 15V-285 are under a Do Not Drive advisory. Owners of these vehicles are advised not to drive their vehicles until the recall remedy has been completed. Toyota will notify their owners. Pontiac Vibe owners will be notified by GM. Due to electrical noise, a component in the air bag control module may fail, causing the front air bags, side air bags, and/or seatbelt pretensioners to deploy inadvertently while the vehicle is being operated.
- Consequence: Inadvertent deployment of the air bags or the seat belt pretensioners increases the risk of an injury or crash.
- Remedy: Toyota will notify their owners. Pontiac Vibe owners will be notified by GM. Dealers will replace the air bag control module, free of charge. The recall began on August 24, 2015. Toyota owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331. GM issued an interim notification to owners on March 27, 2015. The recall began on August 24, 2015. Pontiac owners may call 1-800-620-7668. Note: This recall supersedes recalls 13V-029 and 14V-147. Vehicles that had a noise filter installed as the remedy for one of those campaigns need to have the air bag control module replaced under this campaign.
- Manufacturer: Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: Toyota is recalling certain model year 2003-2004 Corolla and Corolla Matrix vehicles and 2003-2004 Pontiac Vibe vehicles. The supplemental restraint system (SRS) circuits are susceptible to internal shorting. The electrical short may create an abnormal current flow and increased heat which can damage the circuits. This could result in an inadvertent deployment of the front airbags and/or seat belt pretensioners.
- Consequence: Inadvertent deployment of the airbags or the seat belt pretensioners may increase the risk of injury and the possibility of a vehicle crash.
- Remedy: Toyota will re-notify their owners who have already had their vehicles repaired with a noise filter, but did not receive a new airbag control module, and General Motors will re-notify theirs. Dealers previously installed a supplemental harness containing an electrical filter between the airbag control module and its wire harness, free of charge. Dealers will replace the airbag control module, free of charge. The recall began on March 13, 2013. The manufacturer has not yet provided a schedule for second notices. For more information, Toyota owners may call 1-800-331-4331 and Pontiac owners may call 1-800-620-7668.

Congratulations on your new 2004 Impulse Red CE! It's great to hear that you are very happy with your decision. The exterior styling is fantastic and the interior is luxurious, making it a step up from the Honda Civic. The Corolla beats the Honda in both interior and exterior dimensions, making it a clear winner. The car feels fast and has brisk acceleration without going above 3,000 rpm. It cruises at 70 mph at a low 2,300 rpm, making it a smooth ride. I can understand why you chose it over the other 10 or so cars in its class, as it looks amazing. The build quality and paint are really good too. Enjoy your new car!

We've had this car since 2003 and it has been absolutely wonderful. We gave it to my son when he started driving and it has certainly taken a beating, but it has kept on ticking!

You've covered 17,600 miles in just 8 months! I'm glad to hear that your fuel mileage has improved after accumulating 12,000 miles. It's impressive that you can get 41 mpg fairly often by keeping your speed between 60-70 mph. The automatic transmission sounds like it has some great features, like the 'grade logic' that senses when you're gaining speed down a hill and downshifts to 3rd to assist braking. Passing performance is quite good, especially when you have the engine above 3,500 rpm.

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with my 2003 Corolla LE. I've had it since it was brand new and it's been an amazing car for me. Even with 135k miles, it's still going strong! I have a special connection to Corollas because my mom owned a 1992 Corolla that she loved until the rust ate through it. Do you have any fond memories of your first car?

I'm so glad to hear about your positive experience with your Corolla! It's amazing that you've been able to drive it for 186,000 miles trouble-free. The fact that you were able to fix the headlight bulbs yourself for only $10 is impressive. It sounds like you take great care of your car and it's paying off with great gas mileage and reliability. Thanks for sharing your story!

I recently bought this car and have had to replace the timing chain and catalytic converter. Despite these issues, the car has great gas mileage at 30 miles per gallon, and the seats are quite comfortable. Additionally, it sits higher off the ground than other sedans of this era. However, the paint is peeling off and the engine could use some work. If you're looking for a car with good gas mileage for your daily commute and don't mind occasional repairs, this car could be a good fit for you.

I had a disappointing experience with this car due to some minor flaws that eventually led to major issues. Unfortunately, the air button broke and when it was repaired by Toyota, the dash became scratched due to poor quality plastic. Additionally, the car tends to sway on mildly windy days and ABS was not available on any Corolla model in my area at the time of purchase. My worst issue is the unpleasant smell of rotten eggs that comes out of the interior air vents whenever I turn on the heat. This has been happening since 1000 miles. Lastly, I have noticed that my brakes tend to slip at red lights and brief stops. Despite numerous attempts by Toyota to fix these issues, they have not been resolved yet.

I bought this car last year and it had 64,000 miles on it. Now it has 72,000 miles and I haven't had a single issue with it. Despite being 28 years old with 5 speeding tickets, I tend to run my cars into the ground, but this car has really impressed me!

I made a bad decision buying this car. Over the past 11 months, I've had a lot of problems with it, including a failed driver power window actuator, a persistent rotten egg smell, and difficulty driving on windy days. The emergency braking is also quite squirmy, and the idle is erratic. Additionally, the car has numerous rattles and dings too easily. My 2001 Corolla was much better, but it's too late to do anything about that now. I plan to sell this car after two years to at least pay off the interest on the car loan.

I had no trouble with this car and felt it was highly reliable, like the Toyota reputation suggested. Although, at 59,000 miles, the transmission completely failed, I am confident that I took good care of the car and followed the maintenance schedule. Despite the unfortunate incident, I believe that Toyota produces high-quality vehicles and I would consider buying from them again in the future.
