2005 Toyota Celica problems

The Toyota Celica (/ˈsɛlɪkə/ or /sɛˈliːkə/) (Japanese: トヨタ・セリカ, Hepburn: Toyota Serika) is an automobile produced by Toyota from 1970 until 2006. The Celica name derives from the Latin word coelica meaning heavenly or celestial. In Japan, the Celica was exclusive to the Toyota Corolla Store dealer chain. Produced across seven generations, the Celica was powered by various four-cylinder engines, and bodystyles included convertibles, liftbacks, coupés and notchback coupés.

In 1973, Toyota coined the term liftback to describe the Celica fastback hatchback, and used the name Liftback GT for the North American market. Like the Ford Mustang, the Celica concept was to attach a coupe body to the chassis and mechanicals from a high volume sedan, in this case the Toyota Carina. Some journalists thought it was based on the Corona due to some shared mechanical parts.

The first three generations of North American market Celicas were powered by variants of Toyota's R series engine. In August 1985, the car's drive layout was changed from rear-wheel drive to front-wheel drive, and all-wheel drive turbocharged models were offered from 1986 to 1999. Variable valve timing came in certain Japanese models starting from December 1997 and became standard in all models from the 2000 model year. In 1986, the six-cylinder Celica Supra variant was spun off as a separate model, becoming simply the Supra. Lightly altered versions of the Celica were also sold through as the Corona Coupé through the Toyopet dealer network in the 1980s and as the Toyota Curren through the Vista network in the 1990s.

The Toyota Celica Liftback GT won Motor Trend Car of the Year (Imported Vehicle) in 1976.

Common 2005 Toyota Celica problems

The Toyota Celica 2005 has several common problems that have been reported by owners of this car.

Another common problem with the 2005 Toyota Celica is rough idling and misfires, which can be caused by a well-known problem with valve performance. The 1.8-ltr models of the Celica have a soft valve seat that can wear down quickly, leading to misfires, backfires, and stalling. The solution to this problem is to remove the cylinder head and rebuild it using the valves that can be ordered from BreakerYard. This is a big job, but there are many walkthrough guides available to help with the process.

The ABS warning light may also be illuminated, indicating a problem with the car's anti-lock braking system. This problem is caused by a worn-out wheel speed sensor, which can be resolved by ordering a replacement and cleaning any rust or debris from the mounting area. It is essential to check that the front wheel bearings are not rubbing against the ABS trigger rings, or the problem may persist.

Incorrect gear changes are a common problem with automatic transmissions in the 2005 Toyota Celica, particularly at high mileages. This problem can be caused by a throttle position sensor that is out of adjustment or a broken shift solenoid. The throttle position sensor can be moved to the correct position, but if this does not resolve the problem, a broken shift solenoid may need to be replaced.

A high-pitched chirping sound can be heard on cold mornings when the car is first started and idling. This problem is caused by tensioner pulleys that are close to breaking. The solution to this problem is to find new tensioner pulleys on the parts pages and replace any faulty ones.

Braking issues can also be a problem with the 2005 Toyota Celica, particularly if the car has long periods of inactivity. The brake discs can rust quickly, leading to the brake pads wearing out more quickly and causing metal grinding on the rusted discs. The solution to this problem is to order new brake discs and pads from the parts list and install them.

A sluggish engine can be caused by a dirty fuel filter, which can be resolved by removing the filter and cleaning it thoroughly. In some cases, the filter may be too blocked, and a replacement may be necessary.

In summary, the 2005 Toyota Celica has several common problems, including engine failure, rough idling and misfires, ABS warning light issues, incorrect gear changes, high-pitched chirping sounds, braking issues, and sluggish engine performance. Owners of this car should be aware of these issues and take appropriate action to resolve them.

Positive 2005 Toyota Celica car reviews

We purchased this vehicle in December 2000 and it has been an absolute joy to drive. We live in the mountains of Southern California and work in the lower desert, and it has been perfect for driving in the areas we frequent. It has required very little maintenance, although now, with over 100,000 miles, we are investing in some electronic and transmission repairs. We test drove the new Matrix, but we believe that the Celica is a better-built car. Therefore, if we decide to trade in, we will likely choose another Celica.

Here it is 2021 and my 2005 red Toyota Celica, Sweet Red, is still going strong. I bought her new and we’ve always made a great team. We may be oldies, but we're definitely goodies!

Just wanted to say that your car is absolutely wonderful! It looks amazing and it's so reliable. You can really feel the road when you're driving it. And of course, being a Toyota, it's definitely one of the best brands out there. Thanks for sharing your experience with us!

  4. Reid Dietrich 2024-09-29

This is such a great car! I've had an amazing time driving it up and down California's famous Highway 1 (aka the Pacific Coast Highway). It's also my daily commuter, with a manual transmission, and it always turns heads, even after owning it for a while. The design is unique and cohesive; some sporty cars look like they've been pieced together from different designs, but the Celica looks like one car from front to back. If you're a driving enthusiast, you'll absolutely adore this car!

  5. Jett Haag 2024-09-17

The car's precision handling makes for a very comfortable and smooth ride. The engine is powerful and quiet, but also refined when driving at normal speeds. It sounds great when you floor it too! The car has plenty of leg room and the steering wheel is in a comfortable position. As someone who is 6ft tall, I find it remarkably comfortable. The boot is a decent size and the seats fold flat, making it practical for a sports coupe. It's such an amazing car that I honestly don't know what I would replace it with. This is my 4th Celica now and all of them have been amazing cars for lots of reasons.
