2005 Volvo S40 problems

volvo logo

The Volvo S40 is a series of subcompact executive cars marketed and produced by the Swedish manufacturer Volvo Cars from 1995 to 2012, offered as a more mainstream alternative to the compact executive Volvo S60 to compete in a lower pricing bracket. The S40 was more or less positioned against premium-leaning small family cars like the Volkswagen Jetta as well as some mass-market large family cars.

The first generation (1995–2004) was introduced in 1995 with the S40 (S from saloon) and V40 (V from versatility, estate) cars.

The second generation (2004–2012) was released in 2004, and the estate variant's name changed to V50.

The range was replaced by the Volvo V40 five door hatchback in 2012.

Common 2005 Volvo S40 problems

The Volvo S40, a dependable daily driver, has its fair share of problems that can affect its performance. Here are the most common issues reported by its owners, based on search results.

  1. Slipping Transmission: Many 2005 and 2011 S40s, specifically those equipped with a six-speed automatic transmission, have experienced slipping transmission issues. This problem is often caused by an overheated transmission, outdated software, a damaged valve body, or faulty shift solenoids. The vehicle may hesitate, jerk, or jolt into the next gear when this issue occurs.
  2. Failed Starter Control Module: Owners of many 2000 and 2003-2010 S40s have reported being unable to start their engines after several attempts due to a failed starter control module. This issue may be caused by insufficient or excessive voltage, disintegrated connections between modules, faulty sensors, extreme engine temperatures, or excessive vibration.
  3. Worn-Out Front Engine Mount: Some 2000-2008 S40s vibrate excessively at idle due to a worn-out front engine mount. The movements disappear once the engine warms up. This problem is caused by a weakened front engine mount, which can be replaced to resolve the issue.
  4. Leaking Fuel Pressure Regulator: Drivers of some 2000-2005 and 2008 Volvo S40s have had problems getting their engines to run due to a leaking fuel pressure regulator. This issue can cause the vehicle to stall a few moments after cranking the engine or hesitate during acceleration.
  5. Creaking Seats: The front seats in the Volvo S40 are known to creak excessively when you sit on them. This problem is caused by internal damage to the seats, not the runners, as is often assumed. The only remedy is to replace the seats with newer ones.
  6. Loose or Wobbly Key: The key feels loose or wobbly when in the ignition, which is a common problem with the S40. This issue is largely due to the chunky design of the plastic key and the unusually high placement on the dashboard. If your key is feeling loose, then you will need to replace the key and the ignition slot mechanism with the help of a mechanic.
  7. Instrument Panel Failure: The instrument panel is known to fail on these cars, most likely due to a poor connection between the information display and the ECU. The connection underneath the passenger side of the dashboard can come loose, causing the instrument panel to not function as it should. Refitting the connection should sort the problem.
  8. Poor Starting/Loss of Power: The MAF (mass air flow) sensor can get clogged up, causing poor starting and a loss of power during driving. The loss of power results in poor acceleration, particularly at higher speeds. Removing and cleaning the MAF sensor with some MAF sensor cleaner should resolve the issue.
  9. Headlight Switch Failure: The headlight switch on earlier models of the S40 is prone to failing. If it is not working, then you will need to replace the headlight switch to fix the problem.
  10. Oil Leak: There is a leak coming from the turbocharger return pipe seal. This issue is not as common but does happen occasionally. As with any oil leak, it's best to tackle the problem as quickly as you can so as not to damage the engine.
  11. Rotten Egg Smell: The smell of rotten eggs inside your car is almost certainly due to a catalytic converter failure. You will need to replace it, but the good news is that you can sell even badly damaged catalytic converters for quite a bit of cash, which will help to pay for a replacement.
  12. Long Braking Distance: The distance travelled when the brakes are applied is overly long, leading to potential collisions. This is a very well-known issue with the S40 and is all down to the brake rotors (brake discs). If your braking time has been getting worse, then you will need to buy and install new brake rotors.
  13. Leaking Sunroof: Water comes through the seams of the sunroof, which is very common and largely down to a design flaw. The problem is that there are two drainage channels on each side of the sunroof, and when they become blocked by dirt, heavy rain will go into your car rather than being channelled off correctly. This can be an easy fix though, and simply requires a good clean of the top of the car to unblock those drainage channels.
  14. Bumpy Driving: The drive is not smooth or consistent, which can be caused by various issues, including worn-out suspension components, uneven tire wear, or misaligned wheels. Regular maintenance and inspections can help identify and address these problems.

These common problems with the Volvo S40 2005 model can be addressed with proper maintenance, timely repairs, and replacement of faulty parts. Regular inspections by a certified mechanic can help ensure the longevity and reliability of the vehicle.

Negative 2005 Volvo S40 car reviews

  1. Agustin Jacobson 2024-11-12

I purchased the S40T5 after my TSX was totaled. Unfortunately, I have had a few issues with it, including a failed oxygen sensor, a failed engine computer (which required flatbed towing and a week-long wait for the part), check engine lights, a failed fuel pump sensor, and a loose part in the driver's door. Additionally, the stereo stops working at random times, requiring a restart, and the auto transmission shifts are so jerky in manumatic mode that I have to leave it in D. There are also some rattles that the dealer has yet to acknowledge. Despite these issues, I find it seriously fun to drive when it works. However, I have had some disappointing experiences with the local dealer service.

  2. Jack Kozey 2024-09-07

It's a shame to hear that you've had some issues with your Volvo. It sounds like you've had some trouble with the A/C and heater, which can be frustrating. It's understandable that you wouldn't recommend this car after the past month, especially with it breaking down multiple times. Thank you for sharing your experience with us.

I bought my '05 S40 brand new in November. Unfortunately, after hitting 3,000 miles, I started experiencing issues with the car. I had to take it in for repairs more often than I was able to drive it. Over the course of 6 months, it spent 45 days in the service department during 7 separate visits. Despite the numerous repairs, most of the problems remained unresolved. It was a frustrating experience, and I decided to take legal action against Volvo. Thankfully, with the help of an attorney, I was able to file a lawsuit and Volvo was forced to purchase the car back. This experience has made me hesitant to buy another Volvo in the future.

During the first 24 hours, the car had to be towed back to the dealer due to software issues. Two months later, I experienced problems with the key and was unable to start the car. Unfortunately, the service I received was not up to par and I was left feeling frustrated. Despite my attempts to resolve the issue with the dealer, Volvo, and Ford, no one has taken responsibility for the car. If I had the opportunity to sell it, I would. Currently, the car is parked at the dealer station and I have been in contact with local authorities for the past two months. I appreciate your understanding and assistance in resolving this matter.

Although the experience with my S40 has been challenging, I am confident that the issue will be resolved. The dealership has been working diligently to identify and fix the problems, and I trust that they will succeed. While my previous car, a Honda Civic, was reliable, I am excited to explore the features and capabilities of my S40 once it is fully operational.

I've always been interested in the S40's. I was lucky enough to purchase one that the dealer had bought just for show. This car has every option imaginable, including the sports package, making it truly unique. It has great acceleration and handling, although there is a minor issue with the radio occasionally cutting out and needing to be reset. It's always fun to pull up to a Mustang GT at a light and show them that there are other great cars out there besides Fords in Texas!

Purchased this vehicle in May of 2004 - the new body style. Nice styling, interior, and ride. In my opinion, reliability has been poor. The car has less than 23K miles and has had problems with brakes (bad rotors) and engine (all intake valves replaced). Thankfully the vehicle was covered under the warranty. I would not recommend this car.

I've had my S40 since June of this year, and am so happy with it. I love the way it looks, it has a great ride, and great performance. I can't wait to see how it does in the New England snow this winter, as I mainly wanted this car because of its AWD. I went with the Select Package, which includes the sunroof, larger wheels, and upgraded stereo. The sound is awesome; everyone comments on how nice the stereo is. Can't wait until the C70 convertible, based on the S40 platform, comes out next year.

I'm so glad to hear that you're enjoying your Volvo S40! The T5 performance is truly incredible, and it's great to hear that you're getting such good mileage. The new style with chrome wheels really sets off the fire-engine red body, doesn't it? Based on your experience, I would highly recommend this vehicle to anyone looking for a great car.

The Volvo S40-T5 is a fantastic compact family car that offers the driving characteristics of a sports car. Even for taller individuals like myself, the adjustability of the driver's seat and steering column make it easy to find a comfortable driving position. While the acceleration is impressive, it won't break any track records. However, the car is incredibly sturdy and built to last, which is why I was drawn to Volvo's excellent reputation for safety when I purchased the S40-T5. If you're someone who keeps their vehicles for a long time (8-10 years), then a Volvo is definitely worth considering.
