1999 Dodge Neon problems
The Neon is a compact car that was built from in January 1994 until 2005 by the American Chrysler Corporation over two generations. It has a front-engine, front-wheel-drive layout and came in two-door and four-door sedan body styles. In the United States it was sold as either a Dodge or a Plymouth, while in Europe, Mexico, Canada, Japan, South Korea, Egypt, Australia, South Africa, and South America it was branded as a Chrysler, the Neon was offered in multiple versions and configurations over its production life, which lasted from the 1995 model year until 2005. The Neon nameplate was subsequently resurrected in 2016 for the Dodge Neon, a rebadged variant of Fiat Tipo sedan for the Mexican market.
1991 concept car
The Neon nameplate first appeared as a concept car in 1991 under the Dodge brand. Although radically styled and clearly not production-ready featuring sliding suicide doors, the Neon concept resembled the future production vehicle.
The Neon concept was designed by Chrysler designers who had joined the company from Chrysler's buyout of American Motors Corporation (AMC) in 1987.

Common 1999 Dodge Neon problems
The Dodge Neon, a front-wheel drive compact sedan produced from 1995 to 2005, has mixed reliability reviews. Some owners have reported issues that commonly fail in this vehicle. This article will discuss the top three problems reported by Dodge Neon owners, focusing on the 1999 model.
- Malfunctioning Cooling Fan: The Dodge Neon's cooling fan is responsible for maintaining optimal engine temperature. However, it has been reported to fail, which can lead to overheating and potential engine damage. This issue can be particularly problematic during hot weather or when driving in heavy traffic, where the engine is under constant load. To address this issue, regular inspection and maintenance of the cooling fan and associated components are essential.
- Failure in Spark Plug Tube Seals: Another common problem reported by Dodge Neon owners is the failure of spark plug tube seals, which can cause oil to enter the spark plug tubes. This issue can lead to engine misfires and poor fuel economy, affecting the vehicle's overall performance and efficiency. Regular inspection and replacement of worn-out or damaged spark plug tube seals can help prevent this problem.
- Musty Smell from the HVAC System: Some Dodge Neon owners have reported a musty smell emanating from the vehicle's heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system. This issue can be caused by mold or mildew growth within the system, which can be particularly problematic for individuals with allergies or respiratory issues. Regular cleaning and maintenance of the HVAC system, including replacing air filters and checking for mold or mildew growth, can help address this issue.
In conclusion, the Dodge Neon, like any vehicle, can experience common problems that may affect its reliability and performance. Regular inspection and maintenance of key components, such as the cooling fan, spark plug tube seals, and HVAC system, can help prevent these issues and ensure the vehicle remains in good working condition.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2018-02-14
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: RECENTLY BOUGHT A 99 DODGE NEON. THE INSTRUMENT PANEL AS WHOLE WORKS INTERMITTENTLY AND OFTENTIMES THE SPEEDOMETER DOESN'T WORK EVEN WHEN EVERYTHING ELSE. AFTER DOING SOME RESEARCH I HAVE FOUND THE THE COLD SODERS ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL ARE TO BLAME, AND ARE BAD ON MOST CHRYSLER VEHICLES FROM THIS ERROR. I FEEL THIS SHOULD BE FIXED BY THE MANUFACTURER.

STRUCTURE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2014-05-06
- Components: STRUCTURE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: ON 5/614, I NOTICED A SHREDDED PIECE OF PLASTIC FROM A BLUE TARP WAS UNDER MY 1999 DODGE NEON. APPARENTLY IT HAD BLOWN UNDER THE CAR BY THE WIND. I PULLED THE PLASTIC PIECE OUT FROM UNDER MY CAR, AND IN SO DOING I HEARD A DISTINCT "TWANG" NOISE. CURIOUS, I KNELT DOWN AND PEERED UNDER THE CAR AND WAS HORRIFIED TO SEE ONE OF THE METAL STRAPS THAT HOLDS THE FUEL TANK UP WAS BROKEN DUE TO CORROSION. ONE SECTION WAS HANGING DOWN SEVERAL INCHES, BUT NOT LONG ENOUGH TO REACH THE GROUND. THERE ARE TWO STRAPS THAT HOLD THE TANK IN PLACE, THE SECOND STRAP IS ALSO SIGNIFICANTLY RUSTED BUT STILL APPEARS TO BE INTACT WITH NO APPARENT VISIBLE RUST-THROUGH. I CONSIDER THIS TO BE A SERIOUS ISSUE. IF BOTH STRAPS LET GO THERE IS NOTHING TO HOLD THE TANK UP WHICH WOULD RESULT IN THE TANK DROPPING TO THE ROAD WITH THE END RESULT BEING AN ABSOLUTE DISASTER. IF IT WASN'T FOR A WIND BLOWN, 3 FOOT LONG PIECE OF SHREDDED PLASTIC GETTING SNAGGED ON MY FUEL TANK STRAP, I MOST LIKELY WOULD NEVER HAVE KNOWN THERE TO BE A PROBLEM. I FIND IT HARD TO BELIEVE THIS HASN'T ALREADY HAPPEN TO SOMEONE ELSE. *TR

WE HAVE EVEN HAD TO BE TOWED A FEW TIMES BEFORE WE KNEW THAT WE COULD WIGGLE THE PLUG, WHICH IS VERY VERY HOT. TODAY, AFTER MISSING A JOB INTERVIEW BECAUSE THE TRUCK ONCE AGAIN STALLED, WE STARTED LOOKING UP ON GOOGLE TO SEE WHAT, IF ANYTHING CAN BE DONE AND HAPPENED TO FIND A WONDERFUL WEB SITE"AUTOBEEF". AT THIS POINT, IT LOOKS LIKE WE MAY HAVE TO GET A NEW COMPUTER FOR THE TRUCK, WHICH RANGES $1000.......!!!!!! *TR

I CONTACTED MY DODGE DEALER WHO SAID THEY ARE NOT ON RECALL. I CONTACTED THE DODGE COMPANY AND THEY SAID THEY ARE NOT ON RECALL, BUT ALL THE MERCHANTS FOUND IT DIFFICULT TO UNDERSTAND CONSIDERING THE FAILURE RATE THEY SEE. ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2005-07-24
- VIN: 3B3SD46R3XH
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
- Summary: I PURCHASED THIS 1999 DODGE INTREPID USED FROM A DEALERSHIP IN THE SUMMER OF 2003. I JUST RECENTLY GRADUATED COLLEGE AND THIS WAS THE FIRST CAR THAT I HAVE EVER FINANCED. I WAS EXTREMELY EXCITED AND PROUD TO BE THE OWNER OF A NEWER VEHICLE. WHEN WE BOUGHT THE VEHICLE IT HAD LESS THAN 40,000 MILES ON IT. WE ALSO BOUGHT THE EXTENDED WARRANTY ON THE VEHICLE. THIS SUMMER WHILE MY WIFE WAS DRIVING THE VEHICLE WITH OUR CHILDREN IT SUDDENLY SHOOK AND SHUTTERED AND THEN QUIT RUNNING ALMOST CAUSING THEM TO GET IN AN ACCIDENT ON A BUSY AND DANGEROUS EXPRESSWAY. WE HAD THE VEHICLE LOOKED AT BY SEVERAL MECHANICS AND THE VERDICT WAS THE SAME THAT WE NEEDED A NEW ENGINE AT A COST OF MORE THAN 5,000.00. THIS ABOUT MADE ME SICK AS WE STILL OWNED OVER 4500 ON THE CAR TO THE BANK. I HAD NOT CHOICE BUT TO PAY THE REPAIRED BILL AND HAVE THE ENGINE REPLACED. I WAS FORCED TO RE-MORTGAGE MY HOUSE TO PAY THIS EXPENSE. AT THE TIME OF THE BREAKDOWN THE VEHICLE HAD JUST LESS THAN 70,000 MILES. THE MECHANIC EXPLAINED TO ME THE PROBLEM FROM THE ENGINE WAS CAUSED BY SLUDGE. HE ALSO INFORMED ME THAT HE HAD JUST RECEIVED A MECHANIC BULLETIN THAT THESE CARS NEED TO HAVE THERE OIL CHANGED EVERY 1000 MILES. THIS INFORMATION ABOUT MADE ME SICK. I WAS RELIGIOUS IN CHANGING THE OIL AND MAINTAIN THIS VEHICLE IT WAS MY PRIZED POSITION. I WOULD REQUEST THAT YOU PLEASE OPEN A CASE FILE AND LOOK INTO HELPING COMPENSATE ME FOR THIS HUGE EXPENSE THAT APPEARS TO A DEFECT IN THE DESIGN OF THE ENGINE. *NM

Overall, this car is very good! Although there have been a few things that required servicing more than once, I'm glad to hear that the sunroof and head gasket were both covered under warranty.
-
I bought this car brand new and it has been my only vehicle since 1999. It has excellent gas mileage and is really fun to drive. It's faster than a 6 cylinder Mustang and very nimble around town, while also being a stable freeway cruiser. I have the 5 speed and DOHC and have had absolutely no problems with it, even after driving it for almost 80K miles. For comparison, I once drove an Audi TT w/180hp and couldn't feel a difference in acceleration or handling (although I don't mean to suggest that the Neon is a better car!). The only downside is that there is quite a bit of wind noise at 55mph or above. I plan on keeping this vehicle to play with when I replace it with a new Audi or Porsche, etc.
-
I absolutely loved this car! It was fast, nimble, and very sporty, and it held up very well. The only thing that would have made it perfect would have been leather seats and a CD player. Despite being hard to find, it had lots of room for its size. Unfortunately, after my brother wrecked mine, I couldn't find another one like it. I ended up with a 2001 model, but I was very disappointed. It's weak and gets terrible gas mileage, and half of the problems I have with it, the dealer either can't or won't fix. One issue that really bothers me is a sulphuric smell that makes me feel nauseous.
-
This vehicle has been driven reliably and problem-free for 5 years. I have personally serviced the vehicle and found it to be easy to work on. Additionally, I have not experienced any issues with the head gasket, which was a problem in earlier models.
-
Great car so far!

It's great to hear that you've owned your 99 neon sport for nearly 7 years! You've put nearly 120k miles on it and it's been a very reliable car, only leaving you stranded twice. The first time was due to a radiator leak @ 130k miles and the second was just a loose neutral safety switch. It's good to know that it performs well in snow with snow tires and that the cornering is a blast. The fuel economy ranges from 28mpg on low test in normal driving conditions to 39mpg on very long highway trips w/ high octane. Although the clear coat started to bubble up 2 years ago and the headlights have fogged over due to sun exposure and need to be replaced, overall, it sounds like you've had a great experience with this car!

This was the first new car I bought. As an avid Dodge fan, I have always taken awesome care of it. However, this car has been a bad joke. It had major electrical problems within the first month, and needed a new stereo just two months later. It also had a blown head gasket and two major oil leaks, one of which occurred just after the warranty expired. When I contacted Dodge, they told me that it was too bad and that all those cars have oil leaks, and they wouldn't help at all. The repair of the leaks cost me about $2000 in total. Now, it has a transmission leak, the trunk will no longer open from the inside, and the rear doors will no longer unlock with the power locks. What a disappointment!

Although the Neon has had some issues, I have been able to address them with the help of my warranty. I have replaced several parts, including the head gasket, transmission, sunroof motor, water pump, and starter. Despite these challenges, I have been able to keep my car running. While the Neon may not be the best fit for everyone, I have learned a lot about car maintenance and appreciate the opportunity to improve my skills.

This neon has proven to be quite unreliable. The electrical system has caused issues, such as the radio turning on by itself even when the car is off, and occasional problems with the dashboard and headlights. Additionally, the sunroof has stopped working and the transmission failed at only 49,000 miles. It is clear that this car cannot be considered reliable.
