1988 Mercury Tracer problems

mercury logo

The Mercury Tracer is an automobile manufactured and marketed by Ford's Mercury division for model years 1987 through 1999, over three generations in three- and five-door hatchback, four-door sedan, and five-door station wagon configurations.

The first generation was marketed as a subcompact; the two succeeding generations were sold in the compact segment. All three generations derived from the Mazda 323/Protegé.

After 1999, Mercury ended sales of the Tracer; while the Ford Escort was later replaced by the Ford Focus, Mercury exited the compact segment. A planned Tracer fourth generation was projected for 2012, cancelled by the closure of the Mercury brand at the end of 2010.

Common 1988 Mercury Tracer problems

Based on the sources provided, here are the common problems with the Mercury Tracer 1988 based on complaints from owners:

  • Fuel Pump Failures: Another prevalent problem in the first-generation Tracer is fuel pump failures. The fuel pump is crucial for the car's fuel delivery system, and when it fails, it can cause significant issues with the vehicle's performance.
  • Ignition Module Failures: Owners have reported problems with ignition module failures in the first generation of the Mercury Tracer. This issue can lead to starting problems and affect the overall performance of the car.
  • Transmission Problems: In the second generation (1991-1996) of the Tracer, common issues include transmission problems such as slipping gears, hard shifting, and unusual noises. These issues can be caused by various factors like worn components or low fluid levels.
  • Faulty Distributor Cap and Rotor: Another issue in the second generation is faulty distributor cap and rotor, which can cause misfires and affect the engine's performance.
  • Stalling or Rough Idle: Stalling or rough idle in the second generation Tracer can be caused by vacuum leaks, which need to be addressed to ensure smooth engine operation.
  • Timing Belt Failure: Specific to the 1.6-liter engine, timing belt failure can lead to severe engine damage and should be addressed promptly to prevent further issues.
  • Coolant Loss and Overheating: Cracked cylinder heads in the 1.8-liter engine can cause coolant loss and overheating, which can result in engine damage if not resolved.
  • Intake Manifold Gasket Leaks: In the third generation (1997-1999), intake manifold gasket leaks have been reported, leading to coolant loss and overheating. This issue requires attention to prevent engine damage.
  • Alternator Failures: Owners have experienced alternator failures in the third generation Tracer, resulting in battery drain or a dead battery. This issue needs to be addressed promptly to avoid electrical problems.

These common problems with the Mercury Tracer 1988 highlight various issues that owners have faced over the years, emphasizing the importance of regular maintenance and prompt attention to any signs of trouble to ensure the vehicle's longevity and performance.

1995-06-27
  • Manufacturer: FORD MOTOR COMPANY
  • Components: SEAT BELTS:FRONT:BUCKLE ASSEMBLY
  • Summary: THE FRONT SAFETY BELT BUCKLE RELEASE BUTTONS CAN BREAK. THESE RED PLASTIC RELEASE BUTTONS ARE MARKED "PRESS." IF A BUTTON BREAKS, PIECES CAN FALL INTO THE BUCKLE ASSEMBLY CAUSING THE BUCKLE TO OPERATE IMPROPERLY.
  • Consequence: THE SAFETY BELTS WOULD NOT PROVIDE ADEQUATE PROTECTION TO AN OCCUPANT IN A VEHICLE CRASH.
  • Remedy: OWNERS SHOULD PROMPTLY CHECK THE CONDITION AND OPERATION OF BOTH FRONT SAFETY BELT BUCKLES AND CAREFULLY INSPECT THE RED RELEASE BUTTON FOR ANY BREAKS OR CRACKS. THEY SHOULD ENSURE THAT BOTH BUCKLES ARE OPERATING PROPERLY BY INSERTING EACH LATCH PLATE INTO ITS BUCKLE, TUGGING ON THE BELT TO MAKE SURE THAT LATCH IS SECURELY LOCKED, AND THEN PRESSING THE RELEASE BUTTON. THE LATCH PLATE SHOULD POP OUT OF THE BUCKLE WHEN THE BUTTON IS PRESSED. IF EITHER RELEASE BUTTON SHOWS A SIGN OF BREAKING OR CRACKING OR IF EITHER BUCKLE FAILS TO OPERATE PROPERLY, OWNERS SHOULD PROMPTLY CONTACT THEIR AUTHORIZED DEALER TO SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT TO HAVE THE BUCKLE REPLACED OR REPAIRED, FREE OF CHARGE. THE MANUFACTURER IS DEVELOPING A REMEDY DESIGNED TO PREVENT FAILURE OF THE BUTTONS THAT ARE NOT CURRENTLY BROKEN.
