Common 2006 Mercury Mariner hybrid problems
The Mercury Mariner Hybrid, produced between 2005 and 2011, is known for several common problems that affect its performance and safety. These issues are primarily related to the vehicle's steering, transmission, power steering, and cooling system.
- Power Steering Failure: Power steering failure is another common problem with the Mercury Mariner Hybrid. This issue can make it difficult to steer the vehicle, especially at low speeds. The problem is caused by the power steering system failing, which can be due to a variety of reasons, including leaks, worn-out components, or electrical issues.
- Transmission Failure: Transmission failure is a significant problem with the Mercury Mariner Hybrid. This issue can lead to a complete loss of power, making it impossible to drive the vehicle. The problem is caused by the transmission wearing out or failing, which can be due to a variety of reasons, including low fluid levels, worn-out components, or electrical issues.
- Blower Motor Problems: Blower motor problems are a common complaint among Mercury Mariner Hybrid owners. This issue can lead to reduced airflow from the vehicle's climate control system, making it uncomfortable to drive in extreme temperatures. The problem is caused by the blower motor wearing out or failing, which can be due to a variety of reasons, including electrical issues or worn-out components.
- Cooling Pump Failure on Hybrid Models: Hybrid models of the Mercury Mariner are equipped with a cooling pump that's meant to cool the electronics responsible for the hybrid system. This cooling pump could fail and result in the SUV suddenly losing power or its engine shutting down. Owners who experienced the issue felt unsafe given the issue can happen while driving at highway speeds. The coolant pump had brushes inside that experienced a higher rate of wear, which caused the pump to wear out prematurely. In response, Ford issued a recall for Mercury Mariner hybrid SUVs manufactured from 2006 to 2010. Ford will inspect and replace the original motor electronics coolant pump with an improved brushless pump free of charge.
These problems can significantly affect the performance and safety of the Mercury Mariner Hybrid, making it essential for owners to address them promptly. Regular maintenance and inspections can help prevent these issues from occurring, but if they do, it is crucial to have them fixed by a qualified mechanic as soon as possible.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

- Crash: 1
- VIN: 4M2CU98H26K
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: IN STOP AND GO CITY TRAFFIC GOING ABOUT 1 MILE AN HOUR I BRAKED BUT MY MARINER DIDN'T AND I SLOWLY REAR ENDED ANOTHER VEHICLE. MY ABS SENSOR WENT ON THEN OFF EVENTUALLY AN ABS REGEN LIGHT CAME ON AND I HAD NO BRAKES SO I DROVE ,VERY CAREFULLY, 83 MILES TO MY FORD DEALER ( WITH NO BRAKES) TO FIND OUT THAT I NEEDED A COMPLETE REPLACEMENT OF MY ABS HYBRID BRAKING MODULE. $3900! MY MECHANIC AND I CALLED TWO DIFFERENT JUNK YARDS WHERE WE RECEIVED REPLACEMENTS AND THEY WERE INSTALLED BUT WHEN BROUGHT BACK TO THE FORD DEALER THE UNITS WOULDN'T TAKE THE COMPUTER CODE AND THE (USED) SYSTEMS FAILED. $3900 IS A LOT OF MONEY FOR A VEHICLE, WITH 158,000 MILES ON IT, THAT I BOUGHT USED FOR UNDER $5000. THAT SAID IS THERE ANYWAY THAT THIS ABS HYBRID BRAKE MODULE SHOULD HAVE BEEN ON A RECALL LIST. ARE OTHERS HAVING SIMILAR ISSUES? IS THIS WHY THEY QUIT MAKING HYBRIDS AT THIS TIME? I DON'T KNOW BUT I'M THINKING THIS IS A RECALL ISSUE AT THAT PRICE.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2018-05-31
- VIN: 4M2CU98HX6K
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: I PUT MY 2006 MERCURY MARINER HYBRID INTO REVERSE TO BACK OUT OF MY DRIVE WAY. I APPLIED A LITTLE GAS AND BEGAN ROLLING DOWN THE INCLINE TOWARDS THE STREET. AS I APPROACHED THE STREET I PUT ON MY BRAKES, BUT NOTHING HAPPENED AND I FAILED TO SLOW DOWN. A CODE DISPLAYED ON MY DASH READING, "REGEN BRAKES" THE LAST WORD WAS EITHER FAILURE OR DISABLED. I CAN'T REMEMBER BECAUSE I WAS IN A PANIC ABOUT MY BRAKES NOT WORKING WITH MY FAMILY IN THE CAR. I APPLIED THE BRAKES AGAIN. THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS HARD TO PUSH AND THOUGH I TRIED WITH ALL MY STRENGTH, IT DID NOT STOP THE CAR. MY HUSBAND THEN PULLED THE PARKING BRAKE FROM THE PASSENGER SEAT. I TURNED THE CAR OFF TO COLLECT MYSELF, HOPING THE FAILURE WAS SOME WEIRD FLUKE, AND TURNED THE CAR BACK ON. IT IMMEDIATELY DID THE SAME FAILURE. AT THIS POINT, I PUT THE CAR IN PARK AND MY HUSBAND OFFERED TO DRIVE IT AROUND THE BLOCK AND BACK INTO THE GARAGE. IT NEVER SHOWED ANOTHER CODE AFTERWARDS. WE LEFT THE CAR FOR A FEW HOURS AND THEN CAUTIOUSLY DROVE IT TO THE GAS STATION. NO MORE CODES OR ISSUES. HOWEVER, WE NO LONGER FEEL WE CAN SAFELY DRIVE THE CAR AS WE HAVE NO IDEA WHEN THE BRAKES COULD GO OUT AGAIN. NEXT TIME WE MAY NOT BE SO FORTUNATE AS TO BE ON A RESIDENTIAL STREET WITH NO OTHER TRAFFIC.
STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2017-06-07
- VIN: 4M2CU98H26K
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: I WAS BACKING OUT OF MY DRIVEWAY TURNING ONTO THE ROAD, WHEN MY POWER STEERING WENT OUT. I TOOK MY 2006 MERCURY MARINER HYBRID TO THE FORD DEALERSHIP. AT FIRST THEY THOUGHT THERE WAS A RECALL ON IT. IT WAS THE WRONG YEAR. IT SEEMS TO ME THAT FORD WOULD INCLUDE 2006 IF IT IS THE SAME PROBLEM. NOBODY WILL BUY THIS MODEL BECAUSE OF THIS ISSUE. COME ON FORD YOUR PROBLEMS ARE MY PROBLEM. THIS IS NOT RIGHT! IT SEEMS TO ME THAT WITH THIS POWER STEERING ISSUE IN SO MANY OF THE 2006 VEHICLES YOU WOULD STEP UP AND DO A RECALL.
STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2017-10-20
- VIN: 4M2CU98H86K
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: MY FAMILY AND I WERE DRIVING ON HIGHWAY ONE IN CALIFORNIA, MAJOR TURNS, TWISTY ROAD WHEN SUDDENLY AND WITHOUT WARNING, THE POWER STEERING WENT OUT. I HAVE HAD NO WARNINGS LEADING UP TO THIS EVENT. THE WRENCH ICON CAME ON AND AN ERROR MESSAGE CAME ON IN THE DASH STATING TO HAVE THE POWER STEERING SERVICED. THIS WAS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS AS HIGHWAY ONE HAS MANY TIGHT TURNS. I HAVE CONTACTED FORD AND THEY ARE SAYING THAT THIS IS NOT PART OF A RECALL. EVERYTHING I HAVE READ STATES THAT THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM SPECIFICALLY IN THE HYBRID VEHICLES FORD MANUFACTURES. THERE HAVE BEEN RECALLS FOR THE SAME ISSUE FOR 2008 AND NEWER MODEL VEHICLES, BUT NOT THIS ONE. IT IS MY BELIEF THAT THIS ISSUE SHOULD BE INVESTIGATED DUE TO THE DANGEROUS CONDITION CAUSED BY THE POWER STEERING GOING COMPLETELY OUT ON THE CAR WHILE DRIVING. I AM MALE 200 LBS. AND COULD BARELY CONTROL THE VEHICLE. CALLED NON FORD MECHANIC AND WAS TOLD TO TAKE VEHICLE TO DEALERSHIP AS THE POWER STEERING MODULE IS PROPRIETARY AND NEEDS TO BE PROGRAMED BY DEALERSHIP. HAVE NOT TALKEN VEHICLES TO DEALERSHIP AS YET FOR REPAIRS. PLACED CODE READER ON VEHICLE AND CODES C2792 AND B2277 CAME UP.

POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2016-06-01
- VIN: 4M2CU98K16K
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
- Summary: AFTER HAVING A NEW WATER COOLANT PUMP (THE FOURTH ONE IN MY MARINER HYBRID) AND A NEW THROTTLE BODY BEING PUT INTO MY CAR BY A FORD DEALERSHIP, MY CAR IS STILL HAVING THE SAME PROBLEMS. NOW A "SERVICE EMISSION SYS" WARNING HAS COME ON, AND BEING UNDER 150,000 MILES STILL I CONTACTED FORD TO SEE WHAT COULD BE DONE SINCE IT WAS "FIXED" BY THEM BUT STILL HAS A PROBLEM RELATED TO THE ELECTRICAL HYBRID POWERTRAIN, AND FORD SAYS THERE IS NOTHING ELSE THAT CAN BE DONE, EVEN THOUGH IT CLEARLY IS UNDER THE WARRANTY THAT THEY CREATED DUE TO THE FAILURES OF BOTH PARTS.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

- VIN: 4M2CU98H16K
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: ON DECEMBER 30, 2006 MY CAR STALLED AND THE DASH ERROR MESSAGE REFERRED TO A MECP PUMP. I HAD THAT PART REPLACED WITH AN AMAZON PART BEFORE THE RECALL, IT IS ALSO FAULTY.THE SAFETY RECALL IS, 142S19, FROM FORD. CARS STALL BECAUSE OF A FAULTY MECP PART. I TRIED HAVING THE PART REPLACED BY A FORD DEALER. THE DEALER REFUSED AND TO MAKE MATTERS WORSE THEY POSTED ONLINE THAT THEY MADE THE REPLACEMENT. THAT IS A LIE. FORD CUSTOMER TRIED TO GET THE DEALER TO COOPERATE BUT THEY TOLD THEY CANNOT MAKE A DEALER HONOR A RECALL. PLEASE HELP.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2015-07-06
- VIN: 4M2CU98H46K
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: THE WARNING LIGHTS HAD COME ON A FEW DAYS AGO STATING TO CHECK THE BRAKES. TODAY, WHEN THE ENGINE WAS STARTED, THE MESSAGE STOP SAFELY NOW CAME ON. THIS DOES NOT TELL ME ANYTHING ABOUT WHAT I NEED TO DO AND HOW CRITICAL THIS ERROR IS. CAN I DRIVE IT TO THE REPAIR SHOP OR SHOULD I HAVE IT TOWED? WHAT HAS TO BE REPLACED? THIS CAR IS DRIVEN BY MY SON WHO IS AN INEXPERIENCED DRIVER, SO THIS IS A MAJOR CONCERN.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2015-06-08
- VIN: 4M2YU98H96K
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE STREET, AND SUDDENLY, THE "STOP SAFELY" LIGHT CAME. THE ENGINE SHUT OFF AND THE TEMPERATURE LIGHT CAME ON IN THE DASH. I WAS ABLE TO GET MY CAR STARTED AFTER ABOUT 30-45 SECONDS. I STARTED DRIVING AGAIN, BUT IT SHUT DOWN AGAIN A COUPLE MINUTES LATER. IT HAS BEEN OCCURRING INTERMITTENTLY SINCE THAT DAY, WITH TODAY BEING THE MOST RECENT. I CALLED FORD MOTORS TODAY AND WAS INFORMED THAT MY CAR IS ON THE RECALL LIST. THEY NEVER SENT A LETTER TO ME. THE REPRESENTATIVE REFERRED ME TO THE CLOSEST DEALERSHIP IN MY AREA, AND ADVISED ME THAT ANY REPAIRS WILL BE FREE OF CHARGE. I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY FORD MOTORS WOULD PROGRAM THIS VEHICLE TO COMPLETELY SHUT DOWN DURING TRAVEL. GOD FORBID IF THIS HAPPENS WHILE DRIVING ON A HIGHWAY. THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS SO CALLED "SAFETY FEATURE", WHICH NEEDS TO BE DISCONTINUED IN THE FUTURE.
SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2015-04-18
- VIN: 4M2CU39H77K
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE FREEWAY IN A FULLY LOADED CAR AND TRAFFIC WAS BUILDING UP YESTERDAY. I SAW BRAKE LIGHTS AHEAD AND DECIDED TO SLOW PROACTIVELY. I PRESSED ON THE BRAKES AND THERE WAS NO SLOWING AND I HAD TO PUSH THE BRAKES AS HARD AS I COULD WITH THE PEDAL FULLY DEPRESSED TO THE FLOOR. THE CAR DID SLOW BUT I ALMOST REAR ENDED THE CAR IN FRONT. THE YELLOW ABS AND THE RED BRAKE WARNING LAMP LIT AND THE ALARM SOUNDED. I WAS SCARED TO DEATH IN HEAVY TRAFFIC AND PULLED OFF THE NEXT EXIT. I TURNED OFF THE CAR AND PUMPED THE BRAKES AND WAITED 5 MINUTES. I TURNED THE CAR ON AGAIN AND EVERYTHING WORKED BUT I WAS VERY NERVOUS ALL THE WAY HOME. I THEN GOOGLED THE ARTICLE BELOW AND AM VERY UPSET THE FORD DEALER OR FORD ITSELF NEVER ALERTED ME OF THIS KNOWN POTENTIAL MALFUNCTION....AND WHY HAS THERE BEEN NO FORMAL RECALL!?? *TR
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2013-07-17
- VIN: 4M2CU98H26K
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: MY SON WAS DRIVING TO HIS WORK AS AN EMT. I ALLOWED HIM TO USE MY MARINER. TRAVELING APPROX 65MPH ON THE 5 FREEWAY SOUTH IN SUNLAND, HE HEARD THE ROD GO AND SAW THE LIGHTS ON THE DASH INDICATE THE ENGINE OVERHEATING. HE PULLED OFF THE 5 FREEWAY AND PARKED WEAR IT WAS SAFE AND CALLED FOR HELP. I HAD AAA PICKUP THE VEHICLE AND BRING IT TO THE MECHANIC IN WESTLAKE VILLAGE CA. THEY INDICATED TO ME THAT THE ENGINE HAD THROWN A ROD AND WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. THEY THOUGHT IT MIGHT HAVE RUN OUT OF OIL OR SOMETHING ELSE, BUT BOTTOM LINE WAS THAT THE ENGINE WAS DESTROYED. THEY QUOTED ME A PRICE OF $15,000 MINIMUM TO FIX, SO I HAD IT TOWED TO MY DRIVEWAY WHERE IT HAS REMAINED SINCE. IT WASN'T' FOR 10 MONTHS LATER WE WOULD GET ANY INDICATION THAT SOMETHING ELSE MIGHT HAVE CAUSED THIS TO HAPPEN. I LAST SERVICED MY MARINER IN MARCH & MAY OF 2013. MY NEW CONCERN PUTTING 2+2 TOGETHER, IS THAT THOUGH THE CAR WAS DUE FOR AN OIL CHANGE, COULD THIS CATASTROPHIC EVENT HAVE BEEN DUE TO THE OVERHEATED COOLANT SYSTEM THAT AS YET HADN'T BEEN RECALLED? ID LIKE TO SEE IF ANY OTHER MERCURY/FORD CUSTOMERS EXPERIENCED THIS. *TR

- Summary: WHILE ATTEMPTING TO EXIT A PARKING LOT (DRIVING AT LESS THAN 5 MPH AND MAKING A RIGHT TURN TO LEAVE THE PARKING SPOT), THE STEERING BECAME VERY HARD TO TURN. THINKING THAT THE ENGINE HAD SHUT OFF, I RESTARTED THE ENGINE THEN I NOTICED THE MESSAGE IN THE CLUSTER "SERVICE POWER STEERING". I DROVE TO THE NEAREST REPAIR SHOP A FEW BLOCKS AWAY AND THEY CONFIRMED THAT THE POWER STEERING MODULE IS BAD AND WILL HAVE TO BE REPLACED. THEY ESTIMATED REPAIRS WOULD COST ABOUT $1200 IF THEY CAN FIND A USED ONE. I WAS LESS THAN 5 MILES AWAY AND CONTINUED ON HOME. PARKING THIS VEHICLE IN NYC TIGHT SPOTS WITHOUT THE POWER STEERING IS QUITE AN UNDERTAKING. THE WRENCH DISPLAY IN THE CLUSTER AND THE "SERVICE POWER STEERING" MESSAGE HAS BEEN CONSISTENT AND HAS NEVER DISAPPEARED ONCE. I TOOK IT TO MY NEIGHBORHOOD FORD DEALER A FEW WEEKS LATER AND THEY CONFIRMED THAT I WILL NEED "POWER STEERING RACK AND PINION, MODULE AND ALIGNMENT WITH ESTIMATED REPAIRS COSTING $3850 INCLUDING TAXES. THIS PROBLEM SEEMS SIMILAR TO THOSE REPORTED BY THE OWNERS OF THE 2008 - 2011 FORD ESCAPE / MERCURY MARINER SUVS AND IDENTIFIED IN THE RECENT FORD RECALLS FOR POWER STEERING ISSUES. *TR

STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2014-01-07
- VIN: 4M2CU98H56K
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: STOPPED AT GAS STATION TO FUEL VEHICLE. RETURNED TO VEHICLE AFTER FUELING. WHEN I STARTED MY MERCURY MARINER HYBRID, THE INFORMATION SCREEN SAID "SERVICE POWER STEERING". WHEN I STARTED TO MOVE THE VEHICLE, I REALIZED I ONLY HAD MANUAL STEERING AVAILABLE. THIS CONTINUED ALL THE WAY HOME (5 MILES) ON ICY SNOW COVERED ROADS (FOLLOWING OUR NEAR BLIZZARD HEAR IN NORTH EASTERN INDIANA). NEXT MORNING, STARTED VEHICLE AND IT WAS BACK TO NORMAL. MY EXTENSIVE RESEARCH, SO FAR, INDICATES THERE HAVE NOT BEEN ANY RECALLS FOR THIS, WHAT APPEARS TO BE, WIDESPREAD, AND MIGHT I SAY POTENTIALLY VERY DANGEROUS PROBLEM. THIS IS SERIOUS. HOW MANY DEATHS ARE REQUIRED BEFORE A RECALL IS ISSUED ON THIS ISSUE? AFTER READING ABOUT THE VAST NUMBER OF PEOPLE THAT HAVE EXPERIENCED THIS SAME PROBLEM, I'VE STARTED LOOKING FOR ANOTHER VEHICLE. COME ON, SERIOUSLY, THIS IS ONE THAT NEEDS YOUR ATTENTION NOW! *TR

I LOOKED ONLINE AND THERE ARE LOTS OF COMPLAINTS OF THIS PART GOING BAD AND REPLACED BY A UPDATED VERSION THAT WILL HOLD UP BETTER FOR THIS GAS/ELE. MOTOR. I BELIEVE THEY SHOULD RECALL THIS PART AND COVER IT UPON REPLACEMENT. THE COST ESTIMATE WAS $670! *TR

This is my 5th SUV/truck, and I absolutely love driving it! It's hard to believe that it's made by Ford. The only issue I've had is that it's so quiet when driving in a parking lot that no one hears me coming.
-
I sold my Hummer H-3 and bought the Mercury Hybrid with 4-wheel drive. It gets twice the mileage and I can see the other cars better. It's not great off-road, but surprisingly quick on the street. My old black lab finds it easier to hop into the back. So far, I haven't had any problems. I got 30+ MPG on my last fill-up. Overall, it's a really nice truck!
-
This car is amazing! I used to have a '99 Taurus SE Wagon and, compared to the Mariner Hybrid, the wagon had the gas mileage of a Suburban.
-
Hi there! I wanted to share with you our recent road trip experience in our new Mariner hybrid. We drove 4800 miles from Northern California through Nevada, Idaho, Wyoming, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and back to California. The vehicle performed excellently and we were able to get 31.6 MPG, which is pretty impressive! We did even better on the way there, but the desert of New Mexico, Arizona, and California really brought our MPG down. Overall, it was a very smooth ride with great handling and we didn't encounter any problems. Thanks for letting me share our experience with you!

I'm so happy that I chose a hybrid for my first SUV! Like many others, I try to get the most out of every gallon of gas and really make use of the electric feature. On average, I get around 31-32 mpg. It's important to be willing to adjust your driving style when you switch to a hybrid, but it's definitely worth it. The navigation feature is fantastic and very user-friendly. The moonroof is also a great feature, as it opens wider than the standard option. The only issue I've had is a software problem with the on-board computer, but the dealer is working hard to fix it. If more cars were like mine and turned off in stop-and-go traffic or carpool lines, we could greatly reduce our greenhouse gas emissions and dependence on oil. Even though hybrids may cost more initially, the tax credit and savings on gas make it a smart investment in the long run.

The price was $33K, but I did manage to get 5 years of 0% financing. It's important to remember to change the oil, filters, and headlight bulbs periodically, but overall I've had no major issues in the 12 years that I've owned it, despite putting 96K miles on it.

The vehicle's Nav/radio system has some issues that need to be addressed. Despite being advertised as Satellite capable and MP3 compatible, it does not function as expected. Additionally, the Nav system is not user-friendly and lacks accuracy. These issues are disappointing, especially considering the $3700 price tag for this TECHIE Vehicle. However, Ford provided a solution by offering an aftermarket Satellite radio that was attached to the dash with Velcro. While the sound quality was not great, it was a helpful alternative. It's worth noting that the vehicle does not have auto headlamps or an outside temperature gauge. Overall, there is room for improvement in this vehicle's technology features.

I drive 2500-3000 miles a month. It works well for all the city driving that I do. It has enough room for my dogs and stuff in the back, and it's comfortable to ride in. It's a very functional car for me, even though it's not necessarily a 'fun' car.

I owned a Lincoln Aviator before this. However, there is no comparison. I must say that this car is cheaply built. The seats are uncomfortable with paper-thin leather, the sound system is poor, and you can hear the outside air through the windows. Additionally, it has a rough ride. Overall, it is just a cheap and uncomfortable car that was definitely not worth 30-some thousand dollars!
