2009 Suzuki Sx4 problems

suzuki logo

The Suzuki SX4 is a subcompact car and crossover produced by Japanese automaker Suzuki since 2006. A successor of the Aerio tall hatchback and sedan, the first-generation model was available as a hatchback and sedan, with the former available in both front- and four-wheel drive and as a rebadged version in Europe called the Fiat Sedici.

In 2013, the second generation was launched, called Suzuki SX4 S-Cross (or Suzuki S-Cross in India)— now exclusively a subcompact crossover SUV. The first- and second-generation SX4s sold alongside one another until 2014. The SX4 sedan was replaced with the Suzuki Ciaz. The third-generation model was introduced in 2021 as a heavily modified version of the previous model and was only produced in Hungary for the European market. For the Indian market, the S-Cross was replaced by the taller Grand Vitara.

The SX4 is an abbreviation of "Sports X-over 4 Seasons". The SX4 designation was previously used by American Motors Corporation (AMC) from the 1981 through 1983 model years for a sporty liftback model in its line of all-wheel-drive AMC Eagle passenger cars. While the "S-Cross" suffix is an abbreviation of Smart Crossover.

Common 2009 Suzuki Sx4 problems

The Suzuki SX4, produced between 2006 and 2012, has been known to have several common problems based on complaints from owners

One of the most common issues is the rapid wear of the stabilizer struts and bushings, which can lead to a knock and creaking sound. The ball joint and silent blocks of the front levers typically last between 100,000 and 150,000 kilometers, while the rear beam's silent blocks need to be updated after 200,000 to 250,000 kilometers

Front and rear wheel bearings also tend to fail after 120,000 to 150,000 kilometers, with the rear ones requiring replacement of the entire hub assembly. The steering system uses an electromechanical power steering with an electric motor on the steering column, which can develop play in the steering rack guide bushings over time. Some owners have reported creaking of the driver's seat and interior plastic, especially in the first batches of the SX4. The body is generally well-protected from corrosion, but older specimens may develop rust on the chassis elements, muffler holders, and the rear beam after 150,000 kilometers

Engine-wise, the Suzuki SX4's 1.6-liter gasoline engine (M16A) is known for catalytic converter failures and software malfunctions during the warranty period, particularly when using poor-quality gasoline. The upgraded version of the M16A engine, installed from 2009 onwards, has a more stringent Euro 5 standard and features a finalized intake manifold and air filter, increased power to 120 horsepower, and improved catalyst performance

Diesel engines in the Suzuki SX4, developed by Fiat, have been reported to have issues with turbine failures, low durability of the dual-mass flywheel, and diesel particulate filter burnout. The eight-valve turbo diesel 1.9 DDIS and 1.9 GTD engines are equipped with a timing belt drive, while the 1.5-liter gasoline unit (M15A) is made of aluminum and has a 16-valve DOHC gas distribution system and a timing chain drive

In summary, the Suzuki SX4 has several common problems, including rapid wear of stabilizer struts and bushings, wheel bearing failures, creaking driver's seat, and interior plastic. Engine-related issues include catalytic converter failures and software malfunctions, particularly in the 1.6-liter gasoline engine. Diesel engines in the SX4 have been reported to have problems with turbine failures, low durability of the dual-mass flywheel, and diesel particulate filter burnout

Are Suzuki SX4 cars reliable?

Is a used Suzuki SX4 S-Cross hatchback reliable? The SX4 S-Cross placed ninth out of 25 cars in the small SUV category of our 2022 What Car? Reliability Survey. Suzuki as a brand, on the other hand, ranked fifth out of 32 manufacturers, which is really impressive.

Why SX4 failed?

Let me summarize this: Stiff competition from rivals meant low sales for the SX4. Thirsty petrol engine, lack of features, less cabin space as compared to the City. The new Ciaz would be a modern car and would erase all shortcomings found in the SX4.

What year is the bad Suzuki SX4?

Summary: Suzuki Motor of America, Inc. (Suzuki) is recalling certain model year 2006-2011 Grand Vitara and 2007-2011 SX4 vehicles. In the affected vehicles, over time, the OCS sensor mat installed in the front passenger seat may fail due to repeated flexing of the mat from use of the seat.

How long does a Suzuki SX4 engine last?

The estimated lifespan of a Suzuki Sx4 is 146,000mi, before reaching the life expectancy upper limit. Fuel type is a major factor when looking into a vehicles lifespan/life expectancy. Don't just buy it, VehicleScore it.

  • VIN: JS2YC414596
  • Components: AIR BAGS,ENGINE
  • Summary: FIRST ISSUE IS THE AIRBAGS - DRIVER SIDE CENSOR LIGHT HAS BEEN ON EVER SINCE I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE BACK IN 2010. I HAD TO GET THE ENGINE REPLACED DUE TO "ROD KNOCK" ONLY TO FIND THAT THE USED ENGINE OF 52,XXX MILES HAS A LEAK ON THE REAR MAIN SEAL. IT'S LIKELY THAT ISSUE THAT LEAD TO MY ORIGINAL ENGINE FAILING AT AROUND 74,000 MILES. THE DRIVER AIRBAG LIGHT IS STILL ON AFTER SAID ENGINE REPLACING. AFTER READING THE COMPLAINTS ON HERE, IT'S SAFE TO SAY THAT I'LL NEED TO DISH OUT OVER 1.1K TO FIX IT. I HAD THE RECALL FOR THE PASSENGER SIDE AIRBAG, HAD THAT FIXED AROUND THE 74K MILE MARK. GOT THE CAR UNDER 20K MILES.

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • VIN: JS2YB417595
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: DIVER AIRBAG LIGHT IS ALWAYS ON. WHEN TAKEN FOR REPAIRS CODE OFTEN DIFFERS. AUTHORIZED SUZUKI DEALERSHIP SAYS THAT ENTIRE WIRING SYSTEM WOULD NEED REPLACED FOR $3000, BUT COULD NOT GUARANTEE THAT WOULD FIX IT.. IT CAN BE CLEARED, BUT THAT IS ONLY EFFECTIVE FOR A FEW DAYS. LIGHT USED TO BE INTERMITTENT, NOW IT IS CONSTANT. AUTHORIZED SUZUKI DEALERSHIP SAYS WHEN LIGHT IS ON, THE AIR BAG WILL NOT DEPLOY. I'VE BEEN FORCED TO DRIVE WITH THIS CONDITION FOR 10K MILES OR MORE. MY PASSENGER SEAT HAD DIFFERENT AIRBAG SENSOR PROBLEMS. IT HAS BEEN REPLACED. REPLACEMENT OF PASSENGER SEAT DID NOT AFFECT DRIVER SIDE PROBLEM FOR BETTER OR WORSE. *TR

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS,SEATS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2013-12-12
  • VIN: JS2YA413496
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS,SEATS
  • Summary: THE FRONT PASSENGER AIRBAG WARNING LIGHT COMES ON INTERMITTENTLY. THERE IS A KNOWN RECALL OF THE 2009 SUZUKI SX4 FOR A PROBLEM WITH THE SENSOR IN THE RIGHT FRONT PASSENGER SEAT. I BOUGHT THIS CAR AS A USED VEHICLE IN DECEMBER 2013. I HAVE ATTEMPTED TO CONTACT SUZUKI MOTOR OF AMERICA DIRECTLY BY TWO SEPARATE LETTERS TO INQUIRE ABOUT HAVING THE NECESSARY REPAIR MADE; ALSO I HAVE CALLED THREE DESIGNATED DEALERSHIPS THAT HANDLE SUZUKI WARRANTY REPAIRS IN ORLANDO, TAMPA, AND ST. PETERSBURG, FL TO INQUIRE ABOUT THE STATUS OF THE RECALL. I HAVE RECEIVED NO RESPONSE FROM SUZUKI MOTOR OF AMERICA, AND THE DEALERS KNOW NOTHING ABOUT THE STATUS OF THIS RECALL, OTHER THAN VERIFYING THAT MY VEHICLE IS ONE OF THOSE AFFECTED BY THE RECALL. I AM CONCERNED THAT, SHOULD THIS VEHICLE BE INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT WITH A PASSENGER IN THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT, THAT THE AIRBAG WILL NOT DEPLOY AS IT SHOULD, THUS POTENTIALLY LEADING TO A SERIOUS PASSENGER INJURY. I WOULD LIKE ASSISTANCE IN GETTING SUZUKI TO FOLLOW THROUGH WITH THE RECALL REPAIRS FOR THIS DEFECT. *TR

TIRES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2012-04-02
  • VIN: JS2YC414496
  • Components: TIRES
  • Summary: TWO TPMS SENSORS FAILED. THE FIRST SENSOR FAILED AT ABOUT 31000 MILES AND WAS REPLACED UNDER WARRANTY. THEN AT AROUND 50,000 MILES THE SECOND TPMS SENSOR FAILED AFTER WARRANTY HAD EXPIRED. THE FAILURE IS MECHANICAL IN NATURE. THE THREADED VALVE STEM OF THE TPMS SENSOR DEVELOPS HAIRLINE CRACKS REFAULTING IN SLOW AIR LEAKS, WHICH DEVELOP INTO LARGER LEAKS WITHIN WEEKS, WHICH LEADS TO THE TPMS WARNING LIGHT GOING OFF IN THE INSTRUMENT PANEL, AND EVENTUALLY, IN THE NEED TO REPLACE TO TPMS SENSOR DUE TO THE AIR LEAK. FAILURE TO CHECK THE TIRE'S AIR PRESSURE WITHIN A DAY OR TWO CAN RESULT IN A FLAT TIRE. THERE IS A GREAT DEAL OF EVIDENCE IN INTERNET FORUMS THAT THIS IS A WIDESPREAD SUZUKI SX4 ISSUE, HINTING AT AN UNDERLYING FAULT WITH THE TPMS SENSORS. *TR

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2013-11-13
  • VIN: JS2YC414X96
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: I HAVE RECEIVED TWO SAFETY RECALL LETTERS FROM SUZUKI DETAILING A PROBLEM WITH MY AIRBAG SYSTEM THAT MATCHES A PROBLEM THAT I HAVE HAD WITH THE CAR FOR THE LAST TWO YEARS. MY AIRBAG LIGHT IS ALWAYS ILLUMINATED. WHEN I RECEIVED THE FIRST RECALL LETTER, I TOOK MY CAR TO A SUZUKI DEALERSHIP. THEY CONFIRMED THE DEFECT, BUT TOLD ME THAT THE DIAGNOSTIC CODE GENERATED BY THEIR TEST DID NOT MATCH THE ONE THAT SUZUKI HAS SAID THAT THEY ARE COVERING. THE ISSUE IS THE SAME, AND THE FIX IS THE SAME. THE ISSUE CAN BE RESOLVED BY REPLACING A DEFECTIVE COMPONENT IN THE SEAT CUSHION. THIS APPARENTLY REQUIRES THAT THE ENTIRE SEAT BE REPLACED AT A COST OF AROUND $1000. I HAVE CALLED SUZUKI SEVERAL TIMES IN AN ATTEMPT TO GET A RESOLUTION TO THIS PROBLEM, BUT THEY REFUSE TO COVER THE REPAIR. I AM REFUSING TO REPAIR THE ISSUE MYSELF SINCE IT SHOULD BE COVERED, AND I HAVE NO GUARANTEE THAT I CAN BE REIMBURSED FOR THE REPAIR CHARGES. I AM RIGHT NOW RESEARCHING MY LEGAL OPTIONS FOR THIS MATTER SINCE I CANNOT GET SUZUKI TO PAY TO HAVE THE DEFECT REPAIRED. MY ONLINE RESEARCH ON THIS CAR SHOWS THAT THE DEFECT HAS EXISTED IN VARIOUS SUZUKI SX4 MODELS FOR SEVERAL YEARS. ONE ONLINE REVIEW FOR THE 2009 MODEL YEAR NOTED THE DEFECT TO WHICH SUZUKI RESPONDED THAT IT WOULD BE FIXED. APPARENTLY, THEY DID NOT FIX THE PROBLEM. NOW THOUSANDS OF OWNERS ARE DRIVING AROUND WITH DEFECTIVE AIRBAG SYSTEMS. IT SEEMS THAT SUZUKI IS ONLY WILLING TO COVER A FEW OF THEM WHILE LEAVING THE REST OF US TO PAY FOR A VERY COSTLY REPAIR. *TR

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: 2009 SUZUKI SX4 64,000 AIR BAG LIGHT STAYS ON EVEN THOUGH NEVER IN AN ACCIDENT OR ACTIVATED. CONTACTED DEALERSHIP AND TOLD ME NOT UNDER WARRANTY. COSTS WAY OVER $1,000 TO FIX AND UNFORTUNATELY I DON'T HAVE THAT KIND OF MONEY. I DID SOME RESEARCH AND FOUND AN EXTREMELY HIGH VOLUME OF COMPLAINTS FOR THIS IDENTICAL DILEMMA. I BELIEVE THERE SHOULD BE A RECALL AND SUZUKI SHOULD RECTIFY THIS PROBLEM AT NO COST TO THE CONSUMER. WHAT IS IT GOING TO TAKE? SOMEBODY DYING IN AN ACCIDENT TO GET THEIR ATTENTION? PLEASE LET'S TAKE CARE OF THIS AND SAVE HUMAN LIVES! PLEASE LET'S NOT PUT MONEY OVER SAFETY. *TR

AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2013-07-10
  • VIN: JS2YA413895
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: I WOULD LIKE TO SUBMIT A CLAIM ON MY 2009 SUZUKI SX4 DUE TO THE AIRBAG WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATION WITH DTC CODE B1318 FAULT. THIS HAS CAUSED BOTH AIRBAG WARNING LIGHTS, AIRBAG OFF LIGHTS AND SEATBELT LIGHTS, TO COME ON AND NOT GO OFF AT VARIOUS TIMES. WE WERE SENT A LETTER FROM SUZUKI ACKNOWLEDGED AN AIRBAG-RELATED ISSUES WITH FRONT PASSENGER SEATS ON THE VEHICLES FOR AN OPEN-CIRCUIT PROBLEM FOR THE SENSOR MAT THAT DETERMINES IF AN ADULT OR CHILD IS SITTING IN THE FRONT SEAT. I CALLED SUZUKI CUSTOMER SERVICE ON 7/29/13 AND SPOKE TO [XXX]. I INFORMED [XXX] THAT WE PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE DUE TO MY DAUGHTER'S SMALL STATURE IN WHICH SHE IS UNDER 5 FEET TALL AND ONLY WEIGHS 90 POUNDS WHILE HAVING A VALID INDIANA DRIVER?S LICENSE. HER SMALL STATURE HAS CAUSED SEVERAL ERRORS WITH THE PASSENGER SIDE AIRBAG WARNING LIGHT TO ILLUMINATE. THE SEAT IS NOT SENSING HER PRESENCE AND SETS OFF THE WARNING LIGHT. [XXX] ACKNOWLEDGED THAT THERE WAS A PROBLEM BUT WOULD NOT REPAIR THE VEHICLE. HE STATED THAT AIRBAG ISSUES ARE ONLY COVERED UNDER THE 3 YEAR 36,000 MILE WARRANTY. I DID NOT AGREE THAT AN ACKNOWLEDGED ISSUE WITH A SAFETY RELATED COMPONENT FAILURE DUE TO A PERSONS SMALL STATURE IS THE CONSUMERS RESPONSIBILITY. [XXX] ALSO STATED THAT OUR SMALL STATURE DAUGHTER SHOULD NOT SIT IN THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT DUE TO THIS VEHICLES ISSUE. AIR BAGS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2013-04-15
  • VIN: JS2YC414X96
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: MY SUZUKI SX-4 HAS SHOWN AN AIRBAG WARNING LIGHT FOR JUST OVER TWO YEARS. THIS BEGAN JUST SHORTLY AFTER THE WARRANTY PERIOD EXPIRED. I RESEARCHED THE PROBLEM ONLINE, AND FOUND THAT THIS IS A COMMON ISSUE, AND THAT MOST CASES REQUIRED A REPAIR IN EXCESS OF $1000. RECENTLY, SUZUKI ISSUED A REPAIR EXTENSION FOR THE AIRBAG SYSTEM, BUT MY SITUATION CONVENIENTLY DOES NOT QUALIFY. APPARENTLY, THE DIAGNOSTIC CODE IS DIFFERENT FROM WHAT SUZUKI ISSUED THE EXTENSION FOR. I WAS TOLD THIS MORNING BY A SUZUKI DEALERSHIP THAT I MUST PAY ANOTHER $95 FOR DIAGNOSTICS TO FIND OUT WHAT THE DIAGNOSTIC CODE MEANS. THIS IS NOT ACCEPTABLE. I HAVE TRIED TALKING TO REPRESENTATIVES AT SUZUKI'S "CUSTOMER RELATIONS" DEPARTMENT, BUT TO NO AVAIL. THEY INSIST THAT THIS ISSUE IS NOT COVERED UNDER THEIR REPAIR EXTENSION, AND THAT I MUST PAY FOR ADDITIONAL TESTING, AND REPAIR IN ORDER TO RESOLVE THIS ISSUE. MY ONLINE RESEARCH HAS REVEALED THAT THIS ISSUE IS WIDESPREAD, AND IT SHOULD NOT BE CONSIDERED TO BE A NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR, OUT OF WARRANTY ISSUE. THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY PROBLEM. *TR

THE DEALER CLEARED THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT AND NEVER DIAGNOSED THE FAILURE. APPROXIMATELY 72 HOURS LATER, THE CHECK ENGINE WARNING LIGHT WAS ILLUMINATED AGAIN. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 21,000. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 23,000. *TR

2009 Suzuki Sx4 recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 3 recalls for different components of the 2009 Suzuki Sx4.

2013-09-06
  • Manufacturer: Suzuki Motor of America, Inc.
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: Suzuki Motor of America, Inc. As a result, during a crash necessitating deployment, the air bag will deploy regardless of whether the front seat occupant is an adult or a child.
  • Consequence: Air bag deployment with a child in the front passenger side seat increases the risk of injury to that child.
  • Remedy: Suzuki will notify owners and dealers will replace the front passenger seat cushion assembly (which includes the OCS sensor mat) free of charge. Sufficient quantities of parts are not currently available to fix all of the affected vehicles. Owners will be notified of the recall in October 2013 and will receive a second notification when parts are available to have their vehicle repaired. The recall began on May 23, 2014. Owners may contact Suzuki at 1-800-934-0934. Suzuki's recall campaign number is VD.

Negative 2009 Suzuki Sx4 car reviews

  1. Donavon Pagac 2024-11-01

Hello! I recently purchased a 2009 Suzuki SX4 Crossover and unfortunately, the airbag light has come on and won't turn off. I've done some research online and it seems like this is a common issue with Suzuki and the SX4. I have an appointment scheduled for early next week to have it looked at, but I'm a bit concerned about the safety of driving it in the meantime. I'm also experiencing some discomfort in the driver's seat, which is causing some back pain. Despite these issues, I'm hopeful that everything will be resolved soon and I can enjoy my new car. Thank you for your help!

Hey there! I noticed you were talking about your experience with Suzuki cars. I used to own a 1998 Suzuki Swift and it was amazing! It gave me 300K miles of pure reliability. However, I had a different experience with my SX4. I found it to be sub-standard in quality and performance. On top of that, Suzuki has vacated the U.S., so it can be tough to get service. My closest service provider is over 2 hours away. Thanks for sharing your experience!

If you're considering purchasing an SX4 Crossover with manual shift, it's important to note that during my test drive, I experienced an odd tendency for the engine to over-rev when shifting up through the gears. While I initially attributed this to my unfamiliarity with the car or the engine being cold, I later discovered that the SX4 has a unique electronic throttle linkage that can cause unpredictable revving between gears. As someone who has driven stick shift cars for 35 years, I was surprised by this behavior. It's worth taking into account when making your decision.

I purchased this car brand new and unfortunately experienced several issues. The brake pads required replacement every three months and the tires had a lifespan of only 9,000 miles. Despite contacting Suzuki for assistance, my concerns were not adequately addressed. Based on my personal experience, I cannot recommend this car. Thank you for your understanding.

The car wasn't bad to drive, but unfortunately, the engine suddenly seized and I found out it was completely blown. Unfortunately, Suzuki did not cover it under their warranty, and Medved's extended warranty does not cover engines, so the car was a total loss. While this was a disappointing experience, I would recommend being cautious with this particular model. Thank you for sharing your experience.

I bought my car used in November 2011 with 21,400 miles and have had zero problems in the six thousand miles since then. I have only had to change fluids and rotate tires. I traded in my 4-cylinder Ford Ranger for the SX4 and was pleased to find that the gas mileage for both vehicles is the same: 27 city/30 highway. However, the SX4 has AWD, which was a primary reason for my purchase. It supposedly carries the lowest MSRP of any AWD vehicle sold in the U.S. Although I have owned the SX4 for six months, nothing on it appears cheap. The glowing consumer reviews on Edmunds sealed the deal (thanks Edmunds' readers). It is a tall vehicle, which probably explains the high wind noise that becomes annoying at speeds greater than 80mph. Also, the engine needs a...

I stumbled upon the SX4 by accident at CarMax and asked to test drive one. I was thoroughly impressed by the build quality, responsiveness, and maneuverability. It was an absolute joy to drive and the hatchback design provided great visibility. I even added optional bike racks to the rails on top, which were of very high quality and a fraction of the cost of other leading car tops. The car looks sharp and I've received many compliments on it. The upholstery is comfortable and supportive, and the fit and finish are top-notch. I particularly enjoy driving the stick shift, which shifts smoothly. The temperature gauge, time, and MPG display are very visible, and the beautiful red lighting at night is easy on the eyes. The pop-up navigation system is incredibly convenient and works immediately, with Bluetooth connection and MP3 capabilities.

I bought my car in July because of the AWD and I absolutely love driving it. It has great gas mileage. Unfortunately, the GPS box got broken, but the good news is that they will be replacing it for free. Additionally, I received a free gas card for purchasing the car. I got a great price and even traded in two cars for it.
