Common 2002 Saturn Vue problems

The 2002 Saturn Vue is a compact sport-utility vehicle produced by General Motors (GM) as part of the Saturn brand. While the Saturn Vue was popular among buyers for its modern styling and value-oriented pricing, it has had its fair share of problems over the years. This article will explore the common problems with the 2002 Saturn Vue based on complaints from owners of this car.

Engine Problems

The engine is the heart of every car, and it's no wonder that some drivers tend to skip buying a used Vue equipped with a particular engine. Engine problems such as rough idling and misfires, or even harsh rattling noises coming from the engine bay, have been reported by many Saturn Vue owners. These issues were mostly centered on a few engines, such as the 2.4-liter hybrid engine or the 3.0-liter V6 engine. However, the 2.2-liter EcoTec engine made by GM and the 3.5-liter V6 engine made by Honda were quite reliable options with little to no reports of engine troubles.

Steering Knuckle Problems

Another common problem with the Saturn Vue is the steering knuckle that was prone to separating from the control arm, triggering steering issues. The vehicle could drag to the side, and even tie rod fractures were commonly caused by the steering knuckle issue. GM noticed this issue and issued a recall to solve the problem, mostly including older first-gen Saturn Vue models.

Transmission Problems

One of the worst issues that Saturn Vue drivers had to face over the years is faulty transmission, especially on models equipped with a CVT transmission. Transmission-related problems, such as slipping transmission or harsh shifting, were common issues reported by Saturn Vue owners. The CVT transmission was particularly problematic, with numerous reported CVT transmission problems. These issues can be attributed to the moment in the automotive industry when CVT was introduced.

Power Steering Fluid Leaks

Power steering fluid leaks were another common problem reported by Saturn Vue owners. Even GM acknowledged this issue and scheduled an official recall in 2008 to address the problem. The good news is that in most cases, simply tightening the nut that connects the power steering line with the power steering pump solved the issue.

Ignition Issues

Ignition issues were also a common problem with the Saturn Vue. Defective ignition, which allows you to remove the key while the engine is on, was reported in models from 2002 to 2004. This issue can cause significant problems, and it's essential to get it repaired before it becomes a big problem.

Faulty Valve Cover Gaskets

Faulty valve cover gaskets, which can lead to oil leakage, were also a common problem with the Saturn Vue. This issue can cause significant engine damage if not addressed promptly.

In conclusion, while the 2002 Saturn Vue was a popular vehicle among buyers for its modern styling and value-oriented pricing, it has had its fair share of problems over the years. Engine problems, steering knuckle issues, transmission problems, power steering fluid leaks, ignition issues, and faulty valve cover gaskets are some of the most common problems reported by Saturn Vue owners. It's essential to be aware of these issues when considering purchasing a used Saturn Vue and to address them promptly to avoid significant problems down the line.

2002 Saturn Vue engine

What is the most common problem of the Saturn Vue?

Despite its high reliability rating, the Vue isn't perfect. Its most common problems include transmission issues, engine misfires, and ignition malfunction.

Which Saturn Vue has transmission problems?

The 1st generation Vue (2002—2007) has 214 owner complaints, mostly about transmission problems.

Did the Saturn Vue have a Honda engine?

V6 models received Honda's J35S1 engine and Honda transmission. This 3.5 liter engine and 5 speed transmission boosted performance over the prior V-6. It was an important selling point at the time. This V-6 engine was used in the Saturn Vue 2004 to 2007 model years.

How long will a 2008 Saturn Vue last?

A well-maintained 2008 Saturn Vue should last around 150,000 miles, half as long as top-rated competitors like the Honda CR-V. Regular annual maintenance costs are more expensive than other SUVs, at $537 per year, according to Repair Pal.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2015-05-08
  • VIN: 5GZCZ23D52S
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: LOSS OF POWER AND EVENTUALLY JUST STOPPED RUNNING. TOWED IT HOME. SUSPECTED TIMING CHAIN. TOOK OFF VALVE COVER AND TC COVER. NOTICED THAT BLACK PLASTIC GUIDE WAS BROKEN IN MAIN PIECES AND MUST HAVE BEEN FOR SOME TIME, FOR CHAIN WORE INTO SOME BOLTS AND COVER. CHAIN LOOKS BRAND NEW AND NO ISSUES WITH IT. REPLACED ALL TIMING COMPONENTS (TWO SPROCKETS, CHAIN, GUIDE, TENSION ARM, TENSIONER, CAM SPROCKET, ETC)., BUT IT WOULD NOT START. CHECKED COMPRESSION (0 PSI AT ALL CYLINDERS), DOUBLE CHECKED TIMING AND WAS CORRECT. ROLLER ROCKERS WERE LOOSE WHEN CAM IS NOT PRESSING ON THEM, SO SUSPECT ALL VALVES ARE BENT. FIX IS TO REBUILD THE "HEAD". I PRESUME THAT IF THE BLACK PLASTIC CHAIN GUIDE DID NOT BREAK, IT WOULD NOT HAVE GOTTEN OUT OF TIME AND BENT VALVES. THE RECALL SHOULD NOT BE ON THE TIMING CHAIN BUT THE PLASTIC GUIDE THAT IS USED FOR THE TIMING CHAIN. HAD THIS PART BEEN METAL, THIS WOULD NOT HAVE HAPPENED. HAVE PICTURE TO SEND IF NEEDED.

2002 Saturn Vue recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 2 recalls for different components of the 2002 Saturn Vue.

2014-08-08
  • Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION
  • Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2002-2004 Saturn Vue vehicles manufactured September 11, 2001, to April 6, 2004. In the affected vehicles, it may be possible for the key to be removed from the ignition when the ignition is not in the "Off" position.
  • Consequence: If the key can be removed from the ignition when the ignition is not in the "off" position, the vehicle could roll away: (a) for an automatic transmission, if the transmission is not in the "Park" position; or (b) for a manual transmission, if the parking brake is not engaged and the transmission is not in the "Reverse" position. This potential for rollaway increases the risk for a crash and occupant or pedestrian injuries.
  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the vehicle to see if the key can be pulled out when the ignition is off. If it can, dealers will replace the ignition cylinder and keys, free of charge. The recall began in October 2014. Owners may contact Saturn customer service at 1-800-553-6000. GM's number for this recall is 14506. Note: Until a vehicle has been remedied, owners and operators are advised that when exiting, to be sure that the vehicle is in "Park," or in the case of a manual transmission, that the vehicle is in the "Reverse" position and the parking brake is engaged.
2001-12-18
  • Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
  • Components: SEAT BELTS:FRONT:ANCHORAGE
  • Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: CERTAIN SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES FAIL TO COMPLY WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF FMVSS NO. 210, "SEAT BELT ASSEMBLY ANCHORAGES." SOME VEHICLES WERE PRODUCED WITH REAR OUTER SEAT BELT SHOULDER GUIDE ANCHOR BOLTS THAT WERE INCORRECTLY INSTALLED.
  • Consequence: IF THESE BOLTS WERE INCORRECTLY INSTALLED, THEY WOULD NOT WITHSTAND THE LOAD REQUIREMENTS OF THE STANDARD. IF AN ANCHORAGE FAILED IN A CRASH, THE OCCUPANT WOULD NOT BE PROPERLY RESTRAINED AND COULD HAVE AN INCREASED RISK OF INJURY.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE REAR SHOULDER GUIDE ANCHOR BOLTS. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN DECEMBER 19, 2001. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT SATURN AT 1-800-553-6000.

Negative 2002 Saturn Vue car reviews

  1. Dock Schaefer 2024-10-13

I bought this car brand new and although I love the dealer, I have had some issues with the quality of the Vue. Unfortunately, I have experienced a number of problems over the years. The struts went bad at just 500 miles, and the car had to be towed at 1000 miles because it wouldn't start. I've also had issues with burrs in the fuel rail, bad ABS, and poor brakes. Additionally, both O2 sensors and the crank case sensor have gone bad, and the gas gauge and turn signals only work intermittently. On one occasion, the engine control module went out while I was driving 70 mph, causing me to lose all control of everything, including power brakes and steering. To make matters worse, my wife was locked in the car not once, but twice (which seems impossible). Another time, the car lost all power while we were driving in Atlanta on our way to Florida. We went to the dealer and were charged $85 for a bad connection, but unfortunately, the same issue happened again.

  2. Isadore Renner 2024-09-27

In my 35 years of driving, I have had the opportunity to experience a variety of vehicles. Unfortunately, the VUE has not met my expectations. Despite being a low mileage driver, I have had to deal with multiple flat tires,

  3. Garrett Parisian 2024-07-19

This car has been a disappointment since day one. Unfortunately, we have had multiple issues with it, including a leaky sunroof and moldy interior. We have had to fix the transmission twice and have experienced several instances where the car has broken down, leaving my wife and toddlers stranded. We have had a difficult time getting the issues resolved under warranty. While we have had a negative experience with this car, we are hopeful that other brands, such as Dodge and Ford, will provide us with a better experience in the future.

  4. Jessie Miller 2024-06-26

I think this vehicle leans more towards being a sporty SUV than a luxury one. It would be great if Saturn could produce a smoother riding SUV like the Trailblazer. The ride can be quite bumpy and noisy, with loud road noise and rattling sounds. Additionally, it doesn't handle well in windy conditions.

  5. Hans Botsford 2024-06-15

This car has had some recurring issues since the beginning. Today, my husband called to inform me that the check engine light came on and it struggles to accelerate uphill. However, it runs fine on flat ground. We will take it to the dealer to have it checked out. While it has been frustrating, we are confident that the issue will be resolved soon.

Positive 2002 Saturn Vue car reviews

  1. Preston Boyle 2024-11-23

What can I say? I love this car. It's spacious, roomy, and very comfortable.

  2. Moshe Rodriguez 2024-11-18

I really love my car, but I have been experiencing some really aggravating noises coming from the front struts. Unfortunately, the engineering department has not been able to come up with a permanent fix yet. I have had the dealer attempt to repair them three times, and even had someone from Tennessee come up to look at the car. It seems that this is not an isolated problem, as there have been numerous cases of this noise reported. For now, the 'fix' has been to pack the 'dry' strut housing with marine grease until a permanent solution can be found. I did contact Saturn USA, but unfortunately, they were not able to help me with this issue. Despite this problem, the car has performed flawlessly in the 9,000 miles I have put on it in the last three months.

  3. Marcelo Oberbrunner 2024-11-12

Congratulations on your purchase of the VUE Sport! It sounds like you made a great choice with all the features it offers, including the sunroof, CD player, power windows, doors, mirrors, and more, all for a total of $16,995. The ride is incredibly smooth, even at 75 mph, with no wind noise and excellent cruise control that handles hills with ease. I'm impressed with how much windsurfing equipment you were able to fit inside, including a 9'9

  4. Gilbert Rodriguez 2024-11-08

I really like my VUE! I've been driving it for just over a month now and I've enjoyed every minute of it. While I've had a few warranty issues with the interior build quality, it hasn't turned me off the car. The mechanicals, such as the drivetrain and brakes, have been superb and are the reason why I'm so happy with my VUE. Coming from a previous Civic owner, I can say that the VUE handles very well. I must say that the dealership experience has been the best and most consistent I've ever had - no complaints there! I highly recommend checking it out, that's how we got into the VUE. We were just so impressed!

  5. Kevin Fadel 2024-10-29

Hey there! Have you had a chance to check out this amazing vehicle? If the dealership doesn't have one available, don't worry, you can always order yours and trust me, it's definitely worth the wait!
