Common Saturn Vue problems
The Saturn Vue, an affordable family crossover, has received mixed impressions on its reliability over the years. One of the most significant issues faced by Saturn Vue drivers is faulty transmission, particularly in models equipped with a CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission). This issue has been a common complaint across various Saturn Vue model years, causing inconvenience and potentially leading to more severe problems.
Another area of concern for Saturn Vue owners is the engine. Some drivers have reported engine problems such as rough idling, misfires, and harsh rattling noises coming from the engine bay. These issues have been more prevalent in specific engines, like the 2.4-liter hybrid engine and the 3.0-liter V6 engine. However, engines like the 2.2-liter EcoTec engine made by GM and the 3.5-liter V6 engine made by Honda have been relatively reliable, with few to no reports of engine troubles. Therefore, the engine option of the Saturn Vue can significantly impact its reliability.
Additionally, the Saturn Vue has faced issues with the steering knuckle separating from the control arm, causing steering problems. This issue can lead to the vehicle dragging to one side and even trigger tire rod fractures. Although GM recognized this problem and issued a recall to address it, primarily for older first-generation Saturn Vues, steering issues can still be a concern for potential buyers. Properly checking the steering system before purchasing a used Saturn Vue is crucial to ensure safe and controlled driving.
In conclusion, the Saturn Vue has faced various issues over the years, primarily related to transmission, engine problems, and steering knuckle separation. Understanding these common problems can help potential buyers make informed decisions when purchasing a used Saturn Vue, focusing on reliable engine options and thoroughly checking the steering system.

Transmission was torn down/repaired in 2017 for metal bits present at 95,000 (approximate) miles. It is currently at 107,600 miles. Transmission gets stuck in lower gear and rpms Rev up without the vehicle gaining acceleration. The tear down/rebuild was due to bad 3 5 wave plate also and seems to be replicating the issue again. Check engine light comes on amd goes off intermittently and cannot get issue to replicate at the mechanics. Key has also gotten stuck in the barrel. Took almost 2 hours to try numerous ways to get it to release-also had to unlock manually on the door handle, none of the lights inside worked and when it was able to get started it was very slow and deliberate. Battery appeared to be dead but after jump starting and taking to have it checked, battery was found to be fine. These are serious concerns regarding the vehicle as 1 or all could cause serious damage to the driver and others on the road. It happened again today with the high rpms and low gear/not shifting to next gear.

- VIN: 3GSCL33P28S
- Components: SEAT BELTS
- Summary: Vehicle seatbelt is fraying on driver side. Tried to cut off the fray, but realized it continues fraying everytime I use the belt. Have called multiple gm dealers as well as the 800 number for GM. From their info and checking websites, the parts for the seatbelts for this model vehicle have been discontinued. this includes the 2008-10 saturn vue and the 2010-2015 chevy captiva (which is the same car). I am shocked that I have to purchase replacement seatbelts from a junkyard or other used method. Seatbelts are something that I should have ability to replace new. Once GM dealer seemed concern and related that they thought that GM had to replace new ones. Another autoshop stated that this was a recall-type problem on some GM vehicles - but mine does not show this sort of thing. First noticed around 9/11/2023. Bought vehicle on 9/9/2023. Thought it was dog or cat hair until I educated myself online and realized the belt is slowly disintegrating.

Within minutes the entire vehicle was engulfed in flames. We stood there and watched the only vehicle we have completely burn up. I cried and I watched my kids cry. What was supposed to be a beach day for us to distress and relax turned into us almost losing our lives on the highway. We are thankful for the state trooper, the fire department, and the paramedics who all arrived on scene and kept my family safe. Im thankful our lives weren’t lost. However we still faced a life or death situation today.

- Model: Saturn Vue 2004
- Report Received Date: 2014-08-08
- Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION
- Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2002-2004 Saturn Vue vehicles manufactured September 11, 2001, to April 6, 2004. In the affected vehicles, it may be possible for the key to be removed from the ignition when the ignition is not in the "Off" position.
- Consequence: If the key can be removed from the ignition when the ignition is not in the "off" position, the vehicle could roll away: (a) for an automatic transmission, if the transmission is not in the "Park" position; or (b) for a manual transmission, if the parking brake is not engaged and the transmission is not in the "Reverse" position. This potential for rollaway increases the risk for a crash and occupant or pedestrian injuries.
- Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the vehicle to see if the key can be pulled out when the ignition is off. If it can, dealers will replace the ignition cylinder and keys, free of charge. The recall began in October 2014. Owners may contact Saturn customer service at 1-800-553-6000. GM's number for this recall is 14506. Note: Until a vehicle has been remedied, owners and operators are advised that when exiting, to be sure that the vehicle is in "Park," or in the case of a manual transmission, that the vehicle is in the "Reverse" position and the parking brake is engaged.

- Report Received Date: 2009-06-25
- Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
- Components: LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES:DOORS:LATCH
- Summary: GM IS RECALLING 44,451 MY 2008 SATURN VUE VEHICLES WITH BODY COLOR OUTSIDE DOOR HANDLES. THE OUTSIDE DOOR HANDLES MAY STICK OR BIND. IF THIS WERE TO OCCUR, THE DOOR MAY NOT LATCH WHEN CLOSED.
- Consequence: DRIVING WITH AN UNLATCHED DOOR COULD RESULT IN AN UNBELTED OCCUPANT FALLING OUT OF THE VEHICLE, CAUSING INCREASED RISK OF INJURY.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE OUTSIDE DOOR HANDLES WITH CHROME DOOR HANDLES FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN ON OR BEFORE AUGUST 18, 2009. OWNER MAY CONTACT SATURN AT 1-800-972-8876 OR AT WWW.GMOWNERCENTER.COM.
- Model: Saturn Vue 2009
- Report Received Date: 2008-11-24
- Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
- Components: STEERING:LINKAGES:KNUCKLE:SPINDLE:ARM
- Summary: GM IS RECALLING 2,149 MY 2009 SATURN VUE VEHICLES. SOME OF THESE VEHICLES MAY HAVE BEEN BUILT WITH AN INCORRECT RIGHT AND/OR LEFT FRONT STEERING KNUCKLE. AS A RESULT OF THE INCORRECT KNUCKLE AND RESULTING INADEQUATE CLEARANCE, THE TIE ROD BALL STUD COULD PULL OUT OF, OR FRACTURE, THE TIE ROD HOUSING. THIS COULD CAUSE THE TIE ROD TO SEPARATE FROM THE KNUCKLE.
- Consequence: ALTHOUGH STEERING CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE COULD BE MAINTAINED AFTER A TIE ROD SEPARATION BY THE UNAFFECTED WHEEL ON SMOOTH ROADS OR DURING LIGHT BRAKING, WITH MORE SIGNIFICANT SUSPENSION OR BRAKING INPUTS, THE AFFECTED WHEEL COULD TURN OUT AND SKID. IF A VEHICLE BUILT WITH TWO INCORRECT STEERING KNUCKLES HAD BOTH TIE RODS SEPARATE AT THE SAME TIME, STEERING CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE WOULD BE LOST, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE STEERING KNUCKLES AND, IF NECESSARY, REPLACE THE STEERING KNUCKLE(S) AND TIE ROD(S). THE RECALL BEGAN ON DECEMBER 8, 2008. OWNERS MAY CONTACT SATURN AT 1-800-972-8876 OR THROUGH THEIR WEBSITE AT HTTP://WWW.GMOWNERCENTER.COM .

I had to trade in my 99 Durango Cash4Clunkers after it was rear-ended and sustained more damage than it was worth. After shopping around for crossovers, I settled on the V6 Saturn Vue FWD. I've been driving it for 2000 miles now and I have to say, I'm impressed! Here's what I've found: 1) The exterior is very attractive; 2) The interior is also very attractive; 3) It has plenty of power for a small ride; 4) There's plenty of cargo space and room for 5 people; 5) The transmission timing seems a bit rough in 2nd gear; 6) The gas mileage isn't great, averaging around 20-22 MPG for a mix of town and highway driving. However, I remain convinced that I got the best deal on wheels at the time, all in for about $22,600 after clunker and dealer cash.

I've had this car since it was new and it's been an absolute blast to drive. I've put some money into it over the years, but only to keep it in tip-top 'AA' condition. With over 150,000 miles on the clock, I've had to change a few things like wheel bearings, struts, brake pads, tires, motor mounts, and of course, regular oil changes. But all of these are normal wear and tear items for a car of this age and mileage. There were only a couple of minor issues with the water reservoir tank and gas cap, which I think were just defective items for this model. I usually change cars every 2-3 years, but I've never been as happy with a car as I am with this one. I might even keep it for another 2 years!

I'm writing this review because I want to share my experience with this older car. Despite being a Saturn (GM) with a Honda engine and transmission, it has held up well with over 160,000 miles on it. Of course, there have been some minor issues along the way, such as the AC needing to be replaced three times, a wheel bearing needing replacement, and some plastic parts falling off. The driver's seat has a tear and the seat heater doesn't work, but these are minor inconveniences. Occasionally, the blinker needs to be wiggled, and we had some trouble with the interior lights and rear-view mirror. The defroster on the back window is no longer working, and the paint on the plastic dash is peeling. However, with a little bit of duct tape, this car is still going strong. Overall, I would recommend this car to anyone looking for a reliable vehicle with a bit of character.

I researched and evaluated lots of different vehicles before settling on the VUE. I was deciding between a pre-owned Lexus or Mercedes when I saw a Red Line VUE drive close to my home. I couldn't believe it was a Saturn! It had the looks of a European vehicle. I went the next day and test drove a VUE and was hooked. You should definitely put this vehicle on your list! Plus, with 0% APR for 60 months, it's an easy choice.

Your Saturn Vue sounds like a great car to own! It's wonderful to hear that you never had to take it to the dealer for any issues. Thank you for recommending the Saturn for a hassle-free ownership experience.

I purchased my 2008 Vue 14 months ago with 33,000 miles on it. I absolutely loved the comfortable ride and all the bells and whistles, including the heated leather seats and the nice interior design. Other than having to change the battery, I had no issues with the car, even with under 50,000 miles on it. Unfortunately, last week while I was driving home, the RPMs started revving up and going back down, and then the transmission felt like it wasn't engaged, leaving me stranded on the side of the road waiting for a tow truck. The verdict was that the transmission needs to be pulled to determine the extent of the problems. Now I have a rental car with no promise of when my vehicle will be up and running again. Thankfully, it is covered under the 100,000 power train warranty! I hope to have it back soon.

I've had my 2006 V6 Vue for about a year now, and it's my first SUV. I absolutely love the look of the vehicle, and so far, it's been performing great. One of the things I really appreciate is how it drives like a car. However, there is one thing that's been driving me crazy - the wind noise between 50-70 mph. It sounds like my window isn't rolled all the way up or maybe my door isn't completely closed. I'm hoping to find a solution for it soon, but until then, I'll just have to learn to live with it.

If you are considering purchasing a Vue, I would recommend looking into other options. While we have owned our Vue for 18 months, it has unfortunately spent over 2 months in the shop for various repairs. Despite having the front wheel bearings, strut, front linkage, and air conditioner replaced, we continue to experience issues with the vehicle. Additionally, we have had to have the drivers and passenger doors as well as the tailgate repainted, despite paying extra for paint and fabric protection. We have reached out to customer service at Saturn, but unfortunately they have been unable to resolve the issue with the front end of the vehicle. As a result, we are concerned about the safety of the vehicle and would appreciate any assistance in addressing this ongoing issue.

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with my Saturn Vue. I bought it with 123,000 miles on it and I loved it! It drove very well, but unfortunately, the transmission went out on me after 3000 miles. I had bought the 2.2 4 cyl. AWD and I would not recommend that model. The mechanic said it was notorious for having a bad transmission, and they are nearly impossible to find. If you do decide to get a Saturn Vue, I would recommend the V6 version. The engine and transmission were made by Honda and I'm sure it will last you much longer. Let me know if you have any questions!

This car is a great option for those looking for a basic, no-frills vehicle to get from point A to point B. It's excellent on gas, allowing you to travel up to 320 miles with mostly city driving and some highway. While it may not be the most comfortable ride and doesn't handle the best, it's still a great daily driver. Just be sure to opt for the 5-speed instead of the CVT, which tends to break. The engine can be a bit noisy and lacks power, so merging onto highways may require some pre-planning. However, it has held up nicely so far, and with regular maintenance, it should continue to do so. The 5-speed transmission shifts smoothly and is made by Getrag, the same supplier as BMW.
