Common 2021 Audi Q5 problems

The 2021 Audi Q5 has been reported to have several common problems, with electrical issues being the most prevalent. The following are some of the specific electrical problems that have been reported by owners:

  • Infotainment System Issues: Many owners have reported issues with the infotainment system, such as difficulty pairing phones, inconsistent connections to CarPlay, and problems with the voice recognition system. These issues can make it difficult to use the infotainment system, which can be frustrating for drivers.
  • Dash Display Logging into iPhone: Some owners have reported that the dash display will randomly log into their iPhone and show a map, even when the phone is not being used for navigation. This can be a distraction for drivers and may indicate a problem with the integration between the car's systems and the phone.
  • Connection Confusion with Multiple Phones: Some owners have reported that the car's system gets confused when there are multiple Apple phones in the car, causing it to spontaneously disconnect and requiring various maneuvers to get reconnected. This can be inconvenient and may indicate a problem with the car's ability to manage multiple devices.
  • Unable to Select XM Satellite Radio: Some owners have reported that they are unable to select XM Satellite radio, with the problem being resolved by the dealership during a recall requiring a software reset. This may indicate a problem with the software that controls the radio.

In addition to electrical problems, the 2021 Audi Q5 has also been reported to have engine problems, fuel system problems, drivetrain problems, steering problems, miscellaneous problems, wheels/hubs problems, body/paint problems, exterior accessories problems, clutch problems, interior accessories problems, brakes problems, and seat belts/air bags problems. ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-02-21
  • VIN: WA1BAAFY2M2
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: Warning lights came on and car completely stopped. Towed to dealer where we were told that Gateway control module part no 80C907468F has failed due to water damage. Dealer informed us that this is not covered by warranty for this reason. We do not believe we spilt any water there as it is located under the back passenger seat. We asked dealer to proceed with repair when we were informed that the part is on back order. We assumed this would be a matter of days or perhaps few weeks. It has been 3 and half month and no ETA yet. I found on Audi World user group that this is a common problem with this model and others have suffered similarly. I believe the OEM is responsible for making parts available within a reasonable time. In dealing with Audi America and the dealer they offered no remedy for this problem. And I am with out a car now going into 4 months. Surely they must be responsible to consumers for providing the services to maintaining the purchased vehicle operating!

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-03-29
  • VIN: WA1BAAFY8M2
  • Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: The Audi "Pre Sense" automatic braking system engaged without warning and without reason bringing the vehicle to a sudden and complete stop in the middle of an intersection and slamming my body backwards and causing my head to go forward nearly hitting the steering wheel. A school bus was directly behind me and was able to stop in time before it ran into the back of my vehicle, but it could have caused serious injury or death to multiple people. It caused a considerable amount of pain in my neck the day after and soreness in my ribs. The vehicle gave no prior warning. It did display a message simultaneously when it applied the brakes and locked the seatbelts that the "pre sense" had been engaged. It has happened three times prior to this incident. The vehicle dealer has told me that they see record of the system engaging but it does not appear to be faulty by the manufacturers standards despite numerous complaints and frequent occurrences.

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-12-13
  • VIN: WA16AAFY1M2
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: When driving in extreme cold (ambient temperatures of -35 or colder) and I reach a speed of 50mph or higher, my engine fails. The dealership refuses to resolve this issue although they’ve had my vehicle twice now, both for months at a time- and the dealership is 400 miles away from me. They also refuse to authorize the Audi-certified shop in my hometown to perform any type of diagnostics or maintenance work on this vehicle, which would significantly decrease my stress and the inconvenience of shipping my vehicle back and forth. This first occurred within just a few months of purchase of this vehicle, and I am the first owner. I am listing the first time this happened, although it is an ongoing issue.

WHEELS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-12-24
  • VIN: WA1AAAFY6M2
  • Components: WHEELS
  • Summary: Leased new 2021 Audi Q5 from Audi of Coral Springs , FL on Aug 17, 2021. We had the vehicle serviced on 12-24-2022 and where notifed that during the inspection that all 4 tires needed to be replaced and where shocked because our Audi only had about 13,000 miles on the odometer. We asked how to get coverage under our NEW car warranty and where once again shocked when the service rep informed us that Audi doedsnt warrant the tires and we woud have to file a claim with the tire manufacturer Kumho Tires. We called Kuhmo direct at 800-445-8646 who instructed us one of their licensed dealers. We took the Audi to Discount Tires 2629 Weston Rd Weston ,FL with Kumho tires Ref #36136. Discount Tires did their inspection and called us back the next day......notifying us Kuhmo Tires WOULD NOT honor warranty because we where a third party. I cleed Kuhmo direct and asked them to expalin how Iwas considered a third party.....Kuhmo stated they are the first party, Audi is the second party and I was considedred the third party. So I asked if Audi wasn't liable and Kuhmo was n't liable......................who warants the tires on a brand NEW car??? I asked them why their own warranty card on Kuhmo Tires (size 235/55 R19 101H) carries a 60,000 warranty and our Audi had app 13,000 miles how they could deny coverage. I think their process is wrong and needs to be examined, this process really hurts consumers when neither Audi or Kuhmo will accept liability. Looking for assistance in purchasing 4 NEW tires from Audi and or Kuhmo Tires

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-03-05
  • VIN: WA15AAFYXM2
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: The electronic system failed while we were driving 40 mphs. The vehicle completely stopped. A recall notice was generated but never sent even though Audi has email, phone, etc. for information. If this would have happened the prior day while driving 75 mphs this could have killed my entire family. I was without a car for 2 months and Audi did nothing to rectify the situation. My car was towed to another city, with supply chain issues it took 6 weeks to fix. I have lost significant money as a result of this. Audi has been unaccountable for all of that. I had no idea the long history of electrical problems with Audi. Consumers need to know this!

UNKNOWN OR OTHER,BACK OVER PREVENTION,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-11-01
  • VIN: WA1BAAFY4M2
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,BACK OVER PREVENTION,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: The backup camera in the car randomly stops working while driving in reverse. These cameras are mandated by federal law and malfunctions can lead to collision with unforeseen living beings while backing up. The MMI screen also goes completely white/blue while driving forward. Additionally, the adas package comes with a birds eye view camera that is completely skewed created a deceptive understanding of objects in the surroundings. This can lead to collisions making the adas packing (and perhaps the collision warning) totally unreliable. The vehicle is available for inspection as needed. Took the brand new vehicle to the dealer, they refused to fix it as their engineer could not reproduce the issue. Later after a lot of argument, they mentioned they cannot fix it because of resource shortage. Argued they cannot sell brand new vehicles that are faulty, we were told their other cars may have the same issue so they cannot guarantee a loaner will fix this problem. We have spent hours on phone and in person with the dealer service center in vain. There were no warnings of the problem. The screen went blank during the drive. This happened for the first time around November 2021. This happens fairly arbitrarily.

  • Summary: I was driving down a slight hill in 1/2 inch of snow at 5MPH and when I tired to gently brake as I descended the hill, the brake pedal had no resistance and went flat to the floor. I had no brakes. I then tried to steer towards the side of the road and the steering wheel completely locked up and I was not able to steer. I slid 150 feet down the hill and into a ditch. No brakes and no steering. There must have been a failure of some kind. Terrifying.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-11-17
  • VIN: WA1BAAFY9M2
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: The failed component is the gateway module that sits underneath the rear seats below the cup holders. In my case approximately 5 oz of water seeped out of my briefcase via a leaky water bottle and it shut down the gateway module and rendered the car inoperable.. losing all power and engine on the highway at approximately 60 mph. Fortunately I was successful in navigating the car to the side of the road by coasting and other than the fear was not harmed. Car was towes to Audi service where they confirmed that the gateway module failed.. they did not notice any water on the module and replaced it next day ..I was surprised that they had 5 in stock.. just googling Audi Q5 gateway module I noticed many similar incidents like mine I am worried that a family unknowingly with children in the back could have a similar incident and create serious risk. This needs to be communicated immediately to all Audi owners that are impacted and a recall needs to be initiated once a solution is developed and tested.

As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 111, "Rear Visibility."
  • Consequence: A blank rearview camera display can reduce the driver's rear visibility, increasing the risk of a crash.

Negative 2021 Audi Q5 car reviews

  1. Justyn Nikolaus 2024-10-05

I leased a new 2021 Q5 premium plus, but unfortunately it experienced an electrical failure after just three weeks. While the mechanical performance of Audi is always good, this type of failure is unacceptable. I am concerned about being stuck with this issue for the next three years.

  2. Ahmad Denesik 2024-09-10

I have complete confidence in driving it. Although, I must admit that we experienced a transmission issue that left us stranded after a year of use. Additionally, we encountered an electric failure at one point. However, we were able to resolve the issue by replacing three modules for the air conditioning system.

  3. Willis Hettinger 2024-08-01

Hi there! I noticed that your headlights were a bit foggy after your 15-minute drive home.

  4. Rodrigo Simonis 2024-07-01

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with my new Q5. Unfortunately, I've had some issues with it - my first 2021 Q5 required a windshield replacement, and now my second one is causing blurred vision. I'm not sure why this is happening, but I'm hoping to get it resolved soon. Have you had any similar experiences with your Q5?

I am writing this review to express my opinion of the 2021 Q5 Premium compared with the 2014 Premium Plus which I traded in (owned from new). The improvements are significant: the design is sharper, the interior layout has improved, especially the placement of the start/stop button and the easier to use temperature and fan controls. The acceleration and handling are sharper, and the brakes are more efficient and no longer squeak. Although there are some downsides, such as the ride being more firm, tire noise from the Continentals being worse than the Michelins, and excessive wind noise even at 40mph, the Q5 Premium is still a high-quality car. The glove box and central storage are smaller, and the under floor storage 'cubby holes' are gone because of the new emergency tire system. The information screen is no longer embedded in the dashboard, and the seats feel much firmer, and some of the door plastics are harder. However, these changes do not detract from the overall quality of the car. My 2014 had only done 37,000 miles but it had a moonroof which I never used and as I had suffered some skin problems from the sun which penetrated the screen which is supposed to protect one. Audi will tell you that it gives 98% UV protection, but for how long? I live in Florida where dealers of some makes are now installing tints on the front side windows before releasing the car. My observation is that 95% of owners do not use the sunroof/moonroof. Audi is guilty of great waste and forcing buyers to have an unnecessary moonroof if they want the convenience package only available with a Premium Plus or special order. Overall, I am still confident in my decision to purchase the Q5 Premium and believe it to be a high-quality car.

Positive 2021 Audi Q5 car reviews

  1. Allan Collier 2024-11-01

I bought my pre-owned Audi just 3 days ago and I'm extremely satisfied with it. At first, I was a little apprehensive about the size since I was looking for something smaller than my previous Pathfinder, but I'm loving it now!

  2. Desmond Gerhold 2024-11-01

I love how the car has so many safety features and how easy it is to drive.

  3. Percival Gerhold 2024-10-13

Great engine, great base package for Premium trim, and Quattro awd standard. Just enough: premium, driving experience, technology, and space

  4. Stanford Stiedemann 2024-10-09

I've had this 2021 PP Q5 for a year now and it has been trouble-free. The car is enjoyable to drive, although the electronic steering reduces road feel, which is a bit of a bummer. On the highway, I often get 30+ MPG and have even reached as high as 35. In traffic, I usually get somewhere between 25 and 29. The acceleration is fantastic thanks to the great engine/transmission combination. While some people may find the seats too firm, I think they are just fine, especially for long trips, as they provide good back support, which is more important to me than being cushy. Surprisingly, the Kumho tires that came with the car are much better than I expected and even better than the Continentals that I had on my 2018 Q5.

  5. Randi Predovic 2024-10-01

I appreciate the positive feedback on the plug-in and its performance. However, I would like to address the issue of connectivity complexity and the requirement to purchase an additional SIM card and cell service. In my professional opinion, it would be more efficient and user-friendly to charge a higher price for the product and simplify the usage process.
