2009 Buick Lucerne problems

The Buick Lucerne is a full-size car manufactured by General Motors from 2005 to 2011. Named for the city of Lucerne, Switzerland, it served as Buick's top-of-the-line sedan until it was replaced by the second generation Buick LaCrosse.

History

The Lucerne replaced the full-size LeSabre and the Park Avenue in the Buick range, and used a revised G platform, nonetheless referred to by GM as the H platform.

The Lucerne was introduced with the standard 3.8 liter Buick V6 (also known as the GM 3800 engine) or optional 4.6 liter Cadillac Northstar LD8 V8 as well as optional active suspension, marketed as Magnetic Ride Control. For 2005, all General Motors vehicles equipped with the 3.8 L V6 become the first SULEV-compliant vehicles.

The Lucerne featured a row of faux exhaust vents, marketed as "Ventiports," on the front fenders, corresponding to the number of cylinders in the engine — three on each side for the V6 or four for the V8. The CXL trim package added numerous premium features.

The Lucerne was manufactured at GM's Detroit/Hamtramck Assembly Plant alongside the Cadillac DTS. The plant won Initial Quality Awards from J.D. Power and Associates from 2004 through 2006. GM also lead all other automakers in Strategic Vision's Total Quality Index (TQI)

The Super trim level was introduced at the 2007 New York Auto Show, featuring the 4.6 liter Northstar L37 V8; revised trim; an increase of 17 hp (13 kW) horsepower, and revised front styling and a rear spoiler.

All Lucernes received modest mid-cycle updates in 2008, adding optional blind spot monitoring and lane departure warning system and revised exterior colors. Two new trim levels, CXL Special Edition (with more standard features than regular CXL) and Super, were added for 2008. The 2009 Lucerne received small upgades, including a new base engine, the 3.9 L GM High Value LZ9 V6, Bluetooth phone connectivity, and XM NavTraffic. Flex-fuel technology was made available at no additional cost.

For 2010, the Super's rocker panels, grille, and fog lights were added as standard equipment.

The 2011 Lucerne was largely unchanged. The last was built on June 15, 2011. The second generation LaCrosse replaced it as Buick's flagship sedan for 2012.

Common 2009 Buick Lucerne problems

The 2009 Buick Lucerne has been reported to have issues with its fuse blocks, which can lead to stuttering and stalling of the vehicle. However, there have been no recalls to address this problem as of this writing.

Another common problem with the 2009 Buick Lucerne is the electrical system, which can cause sudden loss of power while driving, burglar alarm going off unexpectedly, and weird sounds coming from the fuel pump.

The 2009 Buick Lucerne also has issues with its fuel pump, which can overheat or fail, causing the car to stall or not start at all. Replacing the fuel pump and relay usually resolves this issue, but there have been no recalls to address this problem as of this writing.

In addition to these problems, the 2009 Buick Lucerne has been reported to have a poor design in placing the fuse box under the backseat, which can cause the relay to burn out and cost as much as $1700 to replace.

The 2009 Buick Lucerne also has issues with its engine, which can use oil and have a strong sulfur smell.

The Lucerne ranks 9th in reliability out of 15 Buick models, with owners making 134 complaints over 6 model years, mostly about fuse block problems, engine issues, fuel system problems, and electrical system problems.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-26
  • VIN: 1G4HP57119U
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: The car died suddenly and would not start, with no warnings or codes. Towed it to a Midas repair shop and it was diagnosed as a corroded Low Profile Fuel Pump relay. This was replaced, and the car ran fine for 3 days before going dead in the middle of driving and left me stranded in an intersection. Had to get it towed back to Midas where it was more accurately diagnosed that the issue with the relay was being caused by a faulty Rear Electrical Center. Both of these parts have been recalled, and I have only owned this car for a little over a year. It has only around 40,000 miles on it. Despite this recall, upon taking the car to the local Buick dealership, they stated they could not cover the recall due to it being expired before I even owned the car. I do not understand how it is right or fair for this to have to be paid out of pocket, for $183.53 and $818.81 respectively, when it is not my fault, it is a faulty GM parts issue, and GM stated they will not stand behind their product and cover the recall despite the evident risk to my safety if I was to continue driving the car without repair. I understand it is expired, but I fail to see how this is ethical when the part is still faulty to the point of being dangerous.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-02-02
  • VIN: 1G4HD57M59U
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: The fuse box or fuse holder under the back seat had the fuel pump relay fail due to pressure on the fuse box lid from the seat above it. This is a known issue by Buick as they keep the fuse box in stock (for about $300) I have owned two similar Lucernes with this issue. The fuel pump relay caused enough heat to melt into the fuse box, causing a disconnection. This caused the fuel pump to stop pumping, causing the car to stop running. The problem can be confirmed by calling any Buick dealer. I'm sure they have had several examples of this issue besides my pair. There are many examples mentioned on the internet, as well as videos as to how to fix it. There are no warning lamps prior to the failure. The engine dies and refuses to restart.

  • VIN: 1G4HD57199U
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: Fuel pump relay under vehicles back seat fried out due to the back seat hitting the fuse box cover and grounding out the fuel pump relay. My child was in the back seat and said there was smoke coming from the back seat and the fuse box nearly caught on fire. After reading online I am appalled that this has not been recalled yet. There was 0 warning, no lights on dash, I did not file a police report or do anything with my insurance as there was no accident. Just a car bomb manufactured by GM

2009 Buick Lucerne recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 2 recalls for different components of the 2009 Buick Lucerne.

2014-06-23
  • Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION
  • Summary: This defect can affect the safe operation of the airbag system. Until this recall is performed, customers should remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the ignition key. The key fob (if applicable), should also be removed from the key ring. General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2005-2009 Buick LaCrosse, 2006-2011 Buick Lucerne, 2000-2005 Cadillac DeVille, 2006-2011 Cadillac DTS, 2006-2014 Chevrolet Impala, and 2006-2007 Chevrolet Monte Carlo vehicles. In the affected vehicles, the weight on the key ring and road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position, turning off the engine.
  • Consequence: If the key is not in the run position, the air bags may not deploy if the vehicle is involved in a crash, increasing the risk of injury. Additionally, a key knocked out of the run position will cause loss of engine power, power steering, and power braking, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.
  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will install two key rings and an insert in the key slot or a cover over the key head on all ignition keys, free of charge. The recall began on September 23, 2014. Owners may contact General Motors customer service at 1-800-521-7300 (Buick), 1-800-458-8006 (Cadillac), and 1-800-222-1020 (Chevrolet). GM's number for this recall is 14299.
2010-06-04
  • Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: GM IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2006-2009 BUICK, LUCERNE; CADILLAC DTS; HUMMER H2; MODEL YEAR 2008-2009 BUICK ENCLAVE; CADILLAC CTS; MODEL YEAR 2007-2009 CADILLAC ESCALADE, ESCALADE ESV, ESCALADE EXT; CHEVROLET AVALANCHE, SILVERADO, SUBURBAN, TAHOE; GMC ACADIA, SIERRA, YUKON, YUKON XL; SATURN OUTLOOK; AND MODEL YEAR 2009 CHEVROLET TRAVERSE VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH A HEATED WASHER FLUID SYSTEM (HWFS). A RECALL WAS IMPLEMENTED IN 2008 TO ADD A FUSE TO THE CONTROL CIRCUIT HARNESS TO ADDRESS THE POTENTIAL CONSEQUENCES OF A PRINTED CIRCUIT BOARD (PCB) ELECTRICAL SHORT. HOWEVER, THERE HAVE BEEN NEW REPORTS OF THERMAL INCIDENTS ON HWFS MODULES AFTER THIS IMPROVEMENT WAS INSTALLED. Negative 2009 Buick Lucerne car reviews

In May of 2009, I wrote a review on the 2008 Lucerne CX car and I have an update for you. Unfortunately, I had to file a Lemon Law Lawsuit (June 2009) against Buick division due to possible mechanical failure involving the steering rack, transmission, and power steering unit. However, GM responded by denying my claim, stating that it did not cover appearance issues. I was surprised by this response as I did not mention anything about appearance issues. To make matters worse, shortly after filing the lawsuit, GM filed for bankruptcy, leaving me in a difficult situation. As a result, I have decided to no longer purchase GM cars/trucks. It is unfortunate that I had to end my 35-year loyalty to the brand.

I have been a loyal GM customer for over 20 years. I purchased my 2008 Lucerne brand new and was initially excited about my purchase. However, I experienced some issues with the thermostat which took two attempts to fix. Additionally, the trunk leaked during rain and it took the dealer's service center a week to address the issue. I also had a problem with the gas cap falling off. While the car has great fuel economy, the acceleration is poor and the turning ability is not up to par. As a result, I am hesitant to make assertive moves while driving. Based on my experience, I would not be willing to pay $35K for this vehicle again.

I bought a 2008 Buick Lucerne in 2016 and unfortunately had to replace two fuel pumps. However, I later found out that there was a major recall on this car due to a circuit box issue located under the passenger seat. The metal hinge was too long, causing the fuel pump relay to arc and resulting in a crank no start. While the dealership may try to sell you a new fuel pump, the issue will persist until the entire fuse box is replaced and the metal seat cushion clip is shaved off to prevent the fuel relay from arcing. Additionally, the fuel relay should be replaced with a low profile type. The good news is that Buick will fix this recall for free if the car has less than 120k miles. It's important to let the dealership know that you are aware of this issue to avoid any misunderstandings. Let's work together to ensure that everyone stays informed and safe on the road!

Electrical flaws can be frustrating, but there are some simple solutions that can help. If you're experiencing a constant headache with your vehicle, try pulling the OnStar fuse and trimming the metal parts on the bottom of the backseat above the fusebox. It's also a good idea to condition the drive belt with water repellent and always carry a spare one, along with a 15mm wrench, especially if you'll be driving in heavy rain. Additionally, consider drilling a hole in the trunk to drain water. While it can be frustrating to deal with these issues, it's important to remember that the engineers and business executives at GM are working hard to create the best possible vehicles for their customers.

After having this vehicle for about a month, I must say that it rides like a dream. However, there are a few concerns that I have noticed which could potentially be safety issues. For instance, the passenger side headrest virtually blocks the driver's view when trying to see through the rear side window. Additionally, the front pillar/outside mirror combo on the driver's side creates a blind spot. Lastly, the message center display can be difficult to see when wearing polarized sunglasses. I believe that these conditions may exist with all models of this design.

Positive 2009 Buick Lucerne car reviews

We bought this car from the dealer with 5000 miles on it, as it was previously used as a customer service vehicle. It has every option I can think of since it is the special edition, making it both powerful and comfortable. In fact, the gas mileage consistently exceeds its rating. My wife averages an impressive 23.5 miles per gallon in town, and we get an impressive 28 miles per gallon on trips to Arizona or Chicago. The keyword here is quiet and smooth, making it a pleasure to drive.

I bought the Lucerne CXS after shopping for higher-end cars such as Mercedes and Jag. I feel that I got a better car for about half the price. The NorthStar V8 engine is incredibly smooth and has more power than you could ever need. I get 19mpg in town and 26mpg on the highway. The magnetic ride control suspension and 18

The 2009 Buick Lucerne Super is actually a great value, despite what some experts may say. I personally compared it to other models such as the Toyota Avalon, Lexus, Infiniti, and Cadillac DTS and STS, and found that the Lucerne Super was by far the best value. I've already driven almost 7,000 miles since mid-Sept.09 (I travel a lot) and I've been thoroughly enjoying it.

I have been driving Cadillacs for over 27 years, with my last one being a 2001 DHS. However, my Buick Super has been giving me excellent performance with no wind noise. The fuel economy is what I expected with a 292 HP Northstar engine, achieving 20mpg in city driving. It is absolutely fun to drive and comes with a great many options. By choosing the Buick over the Cadillac, I was able to save several thousand dollars while still getting just about all the same options. I am completely satisfied with my purchase.

I traded my 96 Caddy for this car back in May. However, after driving it for a few days, I noticed that the transmission whines loudly in the 15-30 MPH range. Unfortunately, this is a common issue with the 4T80E transverse transmission, which is only available on the Super and the Cadillac DTS with the 292. GM has a bulletin out on this, but a design change projected for early August did not come through. Despite this issue, I must say that all other aspects of the car are really good. The only other downside is the disappointing MPG, which is only 25 compared to my Caddy that got over 30 MPG on flat land. However, I guess that's progress for you.
